Hello.
I already posted a similar message in the Features & Ideas Discussion but I've been told that it deserved to be here too. So I allow myself to suggest it to you, if you don't mind. The original thread is here.
Since I saw the "Smart Filters" that have been added to the Inventory window (devblog article), I told myself: "it would be really cool to also be able to filter the overview window".
I know that Overview tabs can be configured the way the player wants them to be but it would be nice to be able to filter the Overview in real time. Thus, the Overview window could have two new Filter features (the Smart Filters and the Quick Filter box).
1. Smart Filters

As you can see, the Smart Filter menu would show nine filters but more could be added since that part of the window would have a vertical scrollbar...

2. Quick Filter box

I think this would be really useful, especially if the player is mining and wants to display only one kind of asteroid. Of course it could be used in other situations.. (for example searching for a "yatch" or "bunker" in the Default tab).
Here are just mockup images showing what happens when a player switches from a tab to another. The Smart Filters could be bound to each tab and remember what filter was enabled on tab 1 and what filter was enabled on tab 2, etc.. : link

By "more integrated", would you like it to be less visible or you would like it to have more options, maybe ?

The overview is the most important UI element in the game - its also the crapest - and it takes up most space. There are so many things wrong with it, its hard to know where to start, but CCP's approach is generally to go at something comprehensively - the risk is that in doing the odd tweak they won't touch it again for years.

Colour icons, user definable icons - I want to be able to identify classes of ship easily - I want to use icon X for interceptors and icon Y for logi. A simple pattern match against ship type to set the icon, or the default ones for no matches. A single interface should cover scan/d-scan (with a range slider as a filter), the controls should be in a collapseable panel (like your filters) and results merge with the normal ones in the main table with colouring or some other indicator of where it came from. Bookmarks..... Tactical overlay should link in and provide more (velocity vectors, ability to show multiple modules ranges, follow my overview tabs settings), colouring. My main look and feel wish would be to draw it on space without a window - a title bar is pointless, so are the spreadsheet lines, so is the visible window frame. When transparent it should really be transparent - I need to have it full height in case lots of stuff pops up, but when lots of stuff isn't there it takes up half my screen looking fugly. Tabs are really fugly Angular velocity to 8 significant figures? really? ever see the last one change by itself? Why can't I have a visual speed bar from zero to 'fast' for the velocities (I need to be able to set the definition of 'max', and I'd like it to change colour according to my thresholds - be handy to have a visual cue when something is racing at me at 4000m/s and see when something comes into tracking range without breaking my eyes every time) Columns are always filled in even though data for that column might be pointless - e.g. type for spaceships is handy, the type column for stargates - well, err I can see the icon thanks! This adds to the spreadsheet feel and clutters up the display. Option to collapse alliance/corp into one item Threshhold values for colour/blink highlighting - someone approaching rapidly, someoneone within my guns tracking (as above), at warp distance, at gun distance .... everything visual + detail for when you need the detail. Columns should go away completely when there is nothing in them - say tags - why do i even have a tags column visible when there are no tags set can't it just work this out and hide the column completely? This is an amazing UI improvement TBH !! Fantastic, no other word for me.
It's exactly what I would like it to be, maybe a couple different option etc but tbh with what you are showing it's already easier practical and the fact you could eventually choose different advanced filtering would be absolutely awesome.
Now, if you could manage to make all these border lines excell like completely disappear from the screen, make it like the little anchor for targets and once configured info is scrolled and kept at the screen like now until off grid or depending on bracket options, this, on top of your awesome idea would make my eve experience absolutely FANTASTIC !!! brb |

SmilingVagrant, this could be one of the Smart Filters, yes.
As for me, I would like to see a difference between empty wrecks and full wrecks (to be able to select these words as filters for the Smart Filters menu).
To do this, I guess CCP devs will have to add, on the "type" column of the overview. a new description for wrecks to differentiate them. Please, support this idea : Overview Filters

i would say yes to this but it genuinely think there needs to be a complete re-write of the overview code inside of eve... there are several bugs and usability issues that are not just UI based.
As stated elsewhere in these forums, CCP is highly unlikely to actually take a design made by a player all the way to implementation unless its a call to compete in a competition like the player created starship competition, though even then the designs were augmented.
what would be best is to get a dev to confirm they have taken on board players issues with the current state of the overview and confirm that they are seeking to rewrite the code to something more reliable and usable.
reliability is not something we can help as its all about efficient coding, we can of course point out the bugs in the Overview, and suggest exactly what usability features we would prefer to have. |

I was told about this thread just now so apologies for not replying earlier. Since we are currently active on help chat on TQ because of the Retribution release today I can't go into specifics just now, but I have read the idea and like it a great deal and would like to thank OP for bringing them to light. These ideas would tie well with an iteration to the Overview. I will bring them to the EVE UI group for discussion.

Though, one thing annoys me a bit is the slowlyness of the UI : especially after jumping through a stargate or after undocking a station. The game sometimes, doesn't feel really reactive. I am sure some players have lost battles in lowsec/nullsec just because their interface hasn't refreshed quickly enough.
And yes the Overview window does look more or less like an Excel spreadsheet but how could CCP gather and display all these informations quickly ? I haven't the final solution to this issue, but I tend to think players shouldn't have to search for these informations everywhere on the screen. So gathering them all in one window isn't (maybe) the worse idea CCP had.

The arrow would be there to display the drop-down menu but (to speed up the management of this button during a fight) the player could use his "mouse wheel" over this button to switch the action. I am not a good player... I don't know yet all kinds of ships. And sometimes, when I see a ship in my "Directional Scan" or in the Overview, I tell myself : - hmm.. is it dangerous or not ? - is it big or not ? - is it a T2 ship ?
I don't know how but being able to quickly know more about a ship could save many players' lives/ships.. Mine first. Maybe hovering the line in the Overview where the ship is listed, could display the following tooltip :

Agree, the overview at the moment has a lot of functionality but the usability is terrible.
In addition to streamlining the overview interface, EVE should come with good presets for new players that are reasonable defaults for Mining/Travel/PvP/PvE.

I like some of these ideas. Smart Filters should be contextual to your filter. Only filter checkbox options should be displayed that make sense in the context of the filter of the overview tab I am viewing. I particularly would like to see better integration of the overview and the scanning interface. |

+1 I fully support your proposal. The overview as it currently stands can be a pain at times and not user friendly at all. I love the fact that it is as customiziable as it is and you do nothing to take away from that, and you are still able add many useful features that cut the clutter and streamlines the utility of the overview. There are a lot of replys that I found great also. Please continue your work for the greater good of the masses! |

It doesn't really do anything to change the amount of information received, just the way it is filtered and displayed (and even then, it doesn't appear to be much difference at all on the former). As such, I'm not too sure why you think further lag would be a problem.
Really, if that's such a huge concern for people with older comps, they could always leave in the old overview as an option.
All of this is assuming, of course, that they manage to fix the inherent overview problems that already exist. |

I like what I'm seeing in the suggestions for the overview! I've always avoided trying to deal with it because it's too much of a headache even to come up with solutions for it, but your ideas are making my head feel better already!
Also, your avatar is amazing! I came here ready to find an excuse to leave, until I saw your avatar and decided I might as well start clicking links.
And I have one idea: instead of making a popup box to show ship summary (that would take time and bandwidth), you could just make a more detailed set of small icons to more accurately display all the types of ships. They could all just be boxes, but different colors for different categories. Also, I'd like to see the distinction between the 5 size classes (frigate/destroyer/cruiser/battlecruiser/battleship) worked on. Destroyers and battlecruisers just look like cruisers, and battleships and capital ships look the same.
Here's my proposal, maybe someone can draw up a sketch for me: Industrial ships are already a horizontal rectangle. Capital ships could be a vertical rectangle. I'm not sure what to do for capital industrial ships.
I'm listing color options here sort of off the top of my head, but with red for direct combat, blue for operations/EWAR, and yellow for industry/exploration:
Bright red: tech 1 DPS ships like the kestrel, catalyst, omen, hurricane, typhoon, and attack battlecruisers Dark red: tech 2 assault: assault ships, heavy assault ships, field command ships Magenta: tech 1 tanky combat ships like the incursus, moa, prophecy, maelstrom Maroon: tech 2 tanky: fleet command ships Bright violet: scorpion, bhaalgorn, and tech 1 logistics like the navitas, bantam, augoror, scythe Dark violet: tech 2 logistics, combat recon, and black ops Bright blue: tech 1 EWAR ships like the vigil, crucifier, blackbird, celestis Dark blue: electronic attack ships Bright teal: probe ships: magnate, heron, imicus, probe Dark teal: covert ops (not stealth bombers) Dark green: blockade runners Yellow: tech 1 industrials, noctis Yellow-orange: tech 1 mining barges Dark yellow-orange: exhumers Dark red-orange: stealth bombers and marauders Brown: force recon

I endorse the idea of adding our Smart Filters to the Overview and allowing more contextual sorting. If we get to work on the Overview in the near future, this would be the kind of thing I would want to do to improve it.
I also hope our new Ship Group icons will eventually make it into the Overview, allowing players to read instantly what type of ships are around them. But first we need to make sure they are good enough in a feature that isn't as critical as the Overivew. So once we have released them in some way or form and evaluated their usefulness, then I would want to see them used in the Tactical Overlay and the Overiew.

the ship info panels could be helpful but not if they interrupt quick selection in the overview window.
i think the icons for the shiptype we are seeing on the overview should be reworked. The destroyer icon is too large, and they are in general too vague to draw much from.
building on a previous picture, it would be nice if the icons depended on the hull size (as they pretty much do currently) but with the added bonus of looking fairly distinctive for each hull size. My mockup isn't that great, but it should be reasonable to illustrate how distinctive each icon on the overview for player ships should be.

As you can see, this is very easy to read. Any semi-competent player will notice where the blue defensive line is, what the attacking forces' units are.
Just imagine, Goonswarm's Tengus (Trapezoids) supported by Huginns (Diamonds), Scimitars (Squares) and some interceptors (acute isoceles triangles, because they're fast).
Now that's easy to read. You can see what their interceptors are going, how the logistics are placed and all that stuff.
You can even use Supreme Commanders' system for Tech 1/2 differentiation. Add small white tabs under the strategic icons. 0 for Tech I, 2 for Tech II, 3 for Tech III.
Done.

Something I noticed about the current overviews (Crucible/Retribution) is that there are conflicting filters that are somewhat confusing, and also lots of filters not listed in the options. For instance, I made an overview filter setting and selected all hostile NPCs to show in it, selecting all categories listed of those NPCs. But not a single NPC ship showed at first, I had to right click every kind as I encountered them and select 'add to overview'. This is because the categories in the filter settings only included general types, like asteroid pirates, or mission pirates. But the actual pirates were set up by ship size and faction, ie. Asteroid Sansha Battleship.
So I spent two whole expansions adding ships to my overview, and am probably not done yet. I don't want to have to go through that again, so please make all options available in the settings menus, and if there are overlapping settings, setting one on or off should toggle the others it applies to, ie. setting asteroid pirates on should turn Asteroid Sansha Battleship on. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Get in the Squad Commander or Wing Commander position. Your fleets will be superior to everyone else's. |

Do you have any idea of a time scale for any of this?
Even to state that it is intended to be done within the next year would at least give us all something to look forward to.

First of all, thanks for liking the idea to add the Quick Filter Box.
Now, I have to say that I completely - totally - absolutely disagree with your point of view when you say that "eve is not about easiness".
Well, in fact, you are right, it's unfortunately how it currently is. And I think that's a problem. EVE shouldn't be only aimed at hardcore 4X pro gamers.
The number of EVE players could even increase if the game was more accessible to the majority of people. It makes no sense to keep a feature in the game that frustrates players (and I think the Overview is one of them).
Of course you can customize the Overview, using the 5 available tabs, etc.. but frankly setting it up is a nightmare.
The more user-friendlyness CCP devs will add to the game (I am not saying CCP should add wizards or automation systems to play instead of players), the more players will enjoy their daily dip in the EVE universe.

EVE shouldn't be only aimed at hardcore 4X pro gamers. I think EVE must remain an island (pun was not intended ) in mmo gaming which would be oriented mostly to dedicated players and by all means avoid casualization. It's much more interesting to play with/against mature (25-60 y.o.) space sci-fi fans, instead of youngsters. I can't approve lowering of 'entry barrier'. Eve CAN be improved by making it more comfortable but avoiding casualization has highest possible priority. I think it should be done this way: if you simplify something or make more comfortable - be certain to add some complexity to the same area and deepen it.

Not at all. You really do it once. And while you do it you improve your understanding of game mechanics in general. After that 1st manual setup you just improve and polish it from time to time, until it reaches some optimal state which covers all your needs.
Quantity kills quality. Especially when you try to increase quantity too quickly. Eve still has the potential to gain more players without loss of quality and depth, but it's a relatively slow process which needs a lot more content and diversity (like multi-genre development).

World of Warcraft is a testament to this trend, and has demonstrated exactly what will happen when you remove gamplay options as well as what will happen when you make everything more accessible. When at first they made gameplay more accessible, it brought in a wealth of scrubs, but the vets and experts remained solidly on top--the gap between the bottom and the top increased. But when Blizzard took away gameplay options, the gap between the top and the bottom grew steadily smaller.
I bring this up because I believe it is relevant to this discussion. More overview options that do not add info, but help to sort the info you already have and make it easier to process, are a good thing. Do not confuse this with things that add info to the overview that's not supposed to be there. No matter how clear it is what everyone's ship type is at a glance, you will never be able to tell what someone's fit is (beyond an educated guess) without using a ship scanner. Fit a warfare link to your tech 1 battlecruiser. Train Wing Commander. Get in the Squad Commander or Wing Commander position. Your fleets will be superior to everyone else's. |

Stronger opponents - more interesting opponents. the multiple overview proposal probably ends up doing the same thing but could be easier to use.
imagine you could do the following: - have as many tabs as you want - be able to drag a tab out of the overview, creating multiple overview windows
so you could have a window for gates, targets, drones and maybe friends while still having the option to switch between tabs (e.g swap from drones to loot...)
i strongly believe that having multiple small lists is significantly easier to use as having one large list
but i am not against the filter proposal. Having an option to show only the 5 closest targets in one of the overview windows would be kick ass. eve style bounties (done) dust boarding parties imagine there is war and everybody cloaks - join FW |

Well the ship symbols come with the new ship identification system so that's happening. I really like the idea of buttons in the overview. Although I don't think one is enough. There should be at least two, one fore movement approach, warp to and one for locking, looting, aligning and orbiting. Or more. Really that should be configurable by the player.
I don't like tabs either. Having one list with filter groups would be much more useful. We should be able to add groups and configure savable filters for them at will, with no limitations like "only five tabs". That's silly. If I want a group for every ship size sorted by distance to me, then let me have it.
One more thing that's a bit strange right now: the survey scanner should be integrated into the overview. Why do I have a separat window for it? There are options to toggle the "is locking you" in the overview, why not a toggle for "can see units contained in asteroid"? Also please add the volume to it. Is it really necessary that we do the calculations in our head?
Awesome thread though keep it up. Good to see a UI thread that got noticed. Besides that I also hold the oppinion that CCP should make a PC version for Dust 514. |

Not going to cut it. The overview needs ripped out and replaced with a completely fresh concept.
If CCP wastes time fiddling with the overview as it is now then they will not really make all the changes the overview needs as they will do their standard, we worked on that don't expect to see any more improvements for 10 years. Also, I note that this is posted in the Assembly Hall. You might consider making a satellite post in Features and Ideas Discussion. I wasn't getting much support for my ideas until I discovered that's where all the activity is. F&ID is for casual chat about what could be a good idea, just to run it by others. When you get a lot of support, you would post it in the Assembly Hall and ask people who have claimed support to endorse the post. Then when the CSM note that it is being talked about, they're more likely to take the Assembly Hall post more seriously.
At least that's my best guess at current as to how it works. In any case, you might just double or triple your traffic (at the very least) by moving this topic over there. I know it is frustrating to not receive the feedback you are looking for with an idea like this. The CSM won't always be able to share what is going on with ideas and proposals. It can be infuriating for you.

Some issues that are not brought up alot. The presets do not pre seed in the settings menu and you cannot save new settings while sitting in the hanger. You can change all the settings around but until you are in space there is no way to save what you have changes. If i dont know something about EVE. Yes, I am a bit frustrated not to receive more feedback from CSM members or CCP devs (but in another hand, I understand you can all be busy with other things, no problem).
It's just that the last message I received from a CCP dev dates back to December 2012... when CCP Arrow replied: https://forums.eveonline.com/default.aspx?g=posts&m=2261932#post2261932
So now I tend to think, you, CSM members, are my best opportunity to tell CCP developers: "hey, check these mockups and ideas out, they're great".
I just hope that one day, in a future game update, we'll see a new Overview, with Smart Filters and a Quick Filter box. These are the two main ideas I have posted in this thread and the main ideas I would like featured in the game.
Thank you CSM members for noticing this thread, I hope that you will all share the link, and talk about it during a meeting or group-chat.

We have a great deal of ideas and suggestions regarding the Overview from players and most of the developers want to tackle it sooner rather than later. However, many of the developers that could take on such a project, revamping one of the most vital UI's in the game, have been working on the new Industry revamp for the past few months. The same group of developers has a plan to iterate on the Industry UI once it has been released next week to ensure it is the best it can be.
Once that is out of the way, many of us would love to look at doing a revamped Overview, but we need to discuss it with stakeholders and make sure it fits with the plans of EVE development teams. If it becomes a thing a team would take on, they would need to do extensive research and prototyping and run multiple SiSi deployments before considering replacing the current one.
So as much as I would like to promise you the world, this is the reality we live in and doing things any other way or rushing things would not have the outcome anyone wants.

We have a great deal of ideas and suggestions regarding the Overview from players and most of the developers want to tackle it sooner rather than later. However, many of the developers that could take on such a project, revamping one of the most vital UI's in the game, have been working on the new Industry revamp for the past few months. The same group of developers has a plan to iterate on the Industry UI once it has been released next week to ensure it is the best it can be.
Once that is out of the way, many of us would love to look at doing a revamped Overview, but we need to discuss it with stakeholders and make sure it fits with the plans of EVE development teams. If it becomes a thing a team would take on, they would need to do extensive research and prototyping and run multiple SiSi deployments before considering replacing the current one.
So as much as I would like to promise you the world, this is the reality we live in and doing things any other way or rushing things would not have the outcome anyone wants.

It seems that for some reason, I thought you were more numerous in the CCP development team. That's why, without any feedback from the CCP or CSM members, I started to think, that my idea to add the Smart Filters and the Quick Filter box into the Overview has been forgotten.

I want a filter for People & Places bookmarks. I want to filter out any and all bookmarks that are not for the solar system I am currently located at.
So I can have multiple folders open in my P&P without irrelevant bm's showing up for other systems. Some of my folders have 100s of bm's. |
