When you first started playing eve why did you choose the race/bloodline etc you did?
Personally I read all the flavour text and quite liked the idea of being a member of the space french. I'm a pure blood Gallente pilot who parents were activists and that just kind of sounded like fun.
In hindsight I would have looked at all the different races, realised the flavour text meant nothing and not spent as long as I did specialising in Gallente skills. I mean, would anyone train hybrids if they knew how much they sucked?

Also, started as Gallente because I liked their ships color scheme.

Vheriokor for 1) they had the better stats and storyline when I started 2) The character looks.
Now since the changes.
I regret chosing Vheriokor, but still prefer Minmatar overall.
I want to be Sebishtor or however its spelled.
But not if it is going to cost a bunch of AUR. It aint worth paying that.

When I choose my race and bloodline they came with a specific skillset. At the time I was interested in R&D and missile based PvP. Now its all about the flavor. With that, I would probably change to a matar bloodline for the heritage as well as the tats -------------------------------------------------

I liked the "Mercenaries" part in my bloodline description. So I chose that Caldari line.
When I joined my first 0.0 corp, they told me to train Gallente, because that was the best PVP race back then(!)
As a result, I've been flying Gallente ships most of the time and lived in Gallente space, when in Hi Sec. So being Gallente would have been more appropriate.

I like black girls.
No really, I wanted a tough broad and the Brutor Minnie looked pretty tough. Also, I create a Dajli in every game. She is usually "ethnic". The new character creator made it where I could actually make her "black". However, I had gotten used to the "mixed" lighter skin tone of the old creator and she was supposed to be "mixed" race of sorts anyway.
No, I'm not a power player but not a "act out your character" RPer either.

I chose the race based on the fluff text I found most interesting.
The French IN SPACE, meh an empire IN SPACE, seen it before ex slaves IN SPACE, dkinda different, but meh corporate state IN SPCAE, now thats different, I like that one.
The choice of bloodline was more pragmatic, I liked the attributes and skills of this one best. I actually had an Achura as my first character before I decided I didn't like industry and had him biomassed which is ironic since I ended up getting a bunch of industry skills on this character. -Xindi Kraid: Delivering acerbic wit and scathing comments with just a dash of 'stab you in the eye' |

I didnt wanted to take cladari coz i hate corporatocratic hand that is slowly covering the world irl...
I didnt wanted to take gallente coz i hate that weak quazi democratic but with strong "behind the courtain" secret police...and capitalism...
I didnt wanted to take amarr coz i hate... well you can guess :P
Only thing i was left with are minmatars...and they arent ideal either...

At first i thought their ships and guns sucked, so I switched to amarr ships
Then I found out lasers sucked, so I switched to caldari for running missions.
That quickly became boring, and PVP looked fun, so i started flying gallente.

Caldari because their back ground as the Underdogs during the Gallante-Caldari War. Merchandisers because at the time I was bored and felt silly.
Second Character Minmatar. Siebester Tribe because they were the violent and hard core rebellious types.
third Character Ammatar who I roleplay as a distant cousin of my Minmatar. I can't honestly remember whether Lhanisa's role came first, or emerged after I decided to play a Khanid Cyber Knight, but I'll just assume they were close enough together to work as a full answer here.
Lhanisa is the end result of me trying to pick out the most challenging role I could think of to RP in the game. Now, granted, knowing more about the PF of EVE now than I did a year ago I could probably think up some more challenging concepts, but this was what I ended up with back then. A former Amarr Navy pilot turned civil dissident capsuleer journalist, advocating the (true) independence of the Khanid people from the Amarr empire.
Basically, what I decided to play ended up being a character advocating a cultural revival of a people who've been under the Amarr's thumb for (if I recall correctly) millenia. Certainly not the easiest character I've ever decided to play, and I'm hoping I'll get the chance to actually involve myself in EVE and play the role I picked out a full year ago, when I first played.

Went with Gallente originally, in part because of their lore. Of course, at the time I wasn't aware that they were in reality a pseudo-fascist-socialist republic-masquerading as a democracy, much like most democracies in the real world. Oligarchy much?
Anyway.. yeah, went with that, and Intaki was my first real character creation choice, in part because I liked the reincarnated approach.
Not so much anymore, and I don't really take lore into consideration anymore.

I chose Gallente because they were the closest thing to Americans in space, lol.
Though, I cross trained to minmatar ships because, even though I hated the design of their ships at first, they grew on me so much, now, lol.

Chose Minmatar because I liked their backstory. Enslaved peoples, rising up, fighting back. Plus they have a vaguely Norse background, what with all the big ships being named after Viking myths. I study such things in my free time, so that appealed to me.
And I really loved the way Minmatar ships were structured. Flying scrap piles, asymmetrical and functional. They looked like actual ships actual space-faring races would start out with. It's expensive, both in material, surface area to be protected, and increased internal volume without much usability, to create non-cylindrical curved hulls and smooth lines on a spaceship.
Plus, the Amarr are asshats. ----------------------- A measured and succinct response to the NeX/Fearless/CQ debacle |

I am actually of French ancestry so Gallente seemed appropriate. Turns out I love drones and missiles, so I cross-trained Caldari.
Turns out that Minmatar are the best to cross-train, since non-empire faction ships generally require X/Minmantar ship skills and best for PvP.
But F that I am not crosstraining another race and weapon set. |

The thought process involved;
Amarr - religion, nope. Gallente - hmm, space democracy, proud of freedom and entertainment, sounds good, eh, ships kinda ugly, THEY'RE FRENCH? Nope. Caldari - Hmm, space corporations, very Traveller look to their ships, kinda liking this, oh, everyone else I know irl is Caldari? Nah, I'll try something else. Minmatar - okay, digging the rebellious slave vibe, hehe, duct-tape ships are awesome, ooh, guns, wait, what's this Hurricane thing? SOLD.
So yeah, there we go. ---- Flying a Tengu is like turning on EvE's godmode cheat. Sure, you're winning, but you've got it so easy no-one will respect you for it. |

hmm well, I can't play men convincingly, so I looked at women in eve: caldari: didn't like the look of ths ships, characters came across as statist androgenes
amarr: nice ships, but religion! (didn't want this in my time off)
gallente: didn't like the organic look of the ships. Thought the women looked silly, hated hair, didn't like the ships.
Minmatar: liked look of the girls and the duct tape and rust-bucket look of the ships. Projectiles - very old school! I secretley harbour a love for lasers, but haven't gone there yet. I appreciated the variety of looks possible through races and bloodlines. Tribalism turned out to be the groove I was looking for, as well as a healthy anti-establishment/anti-Republic outlook by way of the Thukker & Angels backstory. The history of slavery was a rich mine information for character creation.

Originally by: Jaiden Solo When you first started playing eve why did you choose the race/bloodline etc you did?
Personally I read all the flavour text and quite liked the idea of being a member of the space french. I'm a pure blood Gallente pilot who parents were activists and that just kind of sounded like fun.
In hindsight I would have looked at all the different races, realised the flavour text meant nothing and not spent as long as I did specialising in Gallente skills. I mean, would anyone train hybrids if they knew how much they sucked?
I went with Caldari on looks alone. It was a long time ago and their faces just looked more realistic somehow. But ever since the new character creation editor was released all races look pretty good and I've since built a couple toons of various races. (Gallente, Minmatar).
I also kept to Caldari skills at first but eventually moved on to Amarr and later Minmatar. It's not really a big problem picking a race/specialization that doesn't suit you or wasting a few thousand SP on worthless skills while you figure out how you want to play. I mean you only start with a few thousand SP and these days you even get a SP/hour boost bonus until you reach a few million.

Edited by: Sgt Maru on 02/07/2011 04:56:26 I picked Caldari cause I liked the colors, some of the ships, shield primary, and missiles seemed alternative. Achur was a clear choice, best stats minus Charisma...
ECM is fun, but I guess missiles just don't cut it for PvP, shields are a plus, and I've been thinking of training for Minmatar...
What I really wish I could have done Be Gallente > Fly Caldari Ship > Do Minmatar DPS.
The Gallente have the best government/society IMO (the ships, drone dependency, armor tanking didn't appeal to me), Caldari are just technical cool guys (I don't agree with the anti-Gallente fascist society thing), Minmatar are cool cause of their history and style (and their ships have kinda grown on me, but their avatars back in 07 weren't all that great looking to me).
The real scourge of the game though is Amarr...those enslaving, religious, elitist, racist, armor tanking, laser pewing, bigots...clearly the other 3 races should come together and smite ze ebil Amarrians...just my opinion though...

;)
I chose Amarr (Khanid) Cyberknights because:
1) They have spaceships that look like spaceships (symmetrical and aerodynamic in appearance) 2) Khanid girls were/are easy on the eyes 3) Cyber Knights were originally a race of combat pilots before stats across blood lines and races were normalised. I felt proud to roll one. 4) There was soothing singing in Amarr stations. I miss that.
I originally rolled Minmitar, but flying around in a ship that looked like a 20th century satellite that had been steam-rolled, and was blaring Machine Gun sound effects at me, sadly broke the immersion I sought of being in a sci-fi universe.
IÆve not regretted chosing Khanid/Amarr for a second.

As a new player, I started and deleted several characters in an attempt to get a feel for the ships and races due to my own indecision. They all felt blemished in background so the ships were dictating my choice. I know race selection doesnÆt mean a lot in the long term and that EVE is a game for the patient. But, I found that race really did make a difference in doing what I want to do in game starting out with one character and one account. I loved long range combat and shield tanking with the Caldari but missile ships felt gimped when trying to outfit them for exploration right on up the line. I ended up Gallente as their drone boats are versatile in that they can outfit various job tools and still fight with drones.
I wish they would make SanshaÆs Nation into a playable faction. Shield tank, lasers, and drones along a ship line up through battleships would make me a happy guy.

When I started playing it was because I read a small ad in a swedish game magazine. An ad I kinda misunderstood. It said "Play as a pirate or a bounty hunter" witch I took to mean I could be a bounty hunter by hunting down player pirates (and make a living of it). So when I started playing the racial decription about caldari said "fierce combat pilots" and civire "makes excellent bounty hunters". Easy choice compared to gallante "best tradesmen in the galaxy" or amarr "religius fanatics". Of course once I got into a 0.0 corp and learned how pvp works I had to retrain :)

Even though I don't roleplay, I still pick races and whatnot based on lore and what my character is like in my mind. Stats and min/maxing be damned. Even with my earlier characters, before the changes to character creation, I would choose the race that I agree with most and not worry if I ended up with more charisma points. I would also always give my characters high intelligence even if I wanted to train lots of ships and guns, because I don't want my character to be stupid.
Anyway... Amarr are religious. I can't identify with that to begin with... But they also take it to fanaticism, and they are also racist and elitist. Pretty disgusting people, don't know why anyone would chose to be Amarr.
Caldari are corporate douches, militaristic fascists, and look like meatheads. Pretty much the race of "tools". Companies already have too much power in reality. Caldari State would be a nightmare.
Gallente seem alright. When I first tried the game, in 2004 I think, they seemed very popular. I loved the way the Vexor looked. My first trial character was Gallente, because I liked the ship designs, I could be a long haired dude, and lore-wise they seemed decent. Intelligent, freethinking, moderate, and fond of art. They seem maybe a bit too government-heavy for me though. After that first trial character, all my other characters ended up being...
Minmatar. The race for people who just want to be left alone and do their own thing. The most free people of New Eden, despite their past. They are also the underdogs, which is attractive. I like the tribal feel, and the viking influence. Its like the Christianization of the world never happened, pagan Europe and the rest of the world got to keep their original cultures, and grew up to become space-faring buddies. Pretty awesome. They also have the best music in the new intro videos, and they have some of the coolest looking ships. The coolest looking industrials and capitals by far. Possibly the coolest dreadnaught (Amarr's looks great too). The Hurricane looks awesome too, and the Rifter is a great T1 frigate. I like their logo also. Maybe the worst looking T3 though, too stick-like.
I always chose Sebiestor, because I liked their description about how they were 'innovative thinkers' and 'tinkerers'. I could also make them all pale and bald and corpse-like with long drawn out faces and pointy chins... basically like Scorpius from Farscape or like Nosferatu. Unfortunately I couldn't replicate that look with the new character creator, but I found a new look I'm happy with.
old "Nosferatu" portraits compared to new: http://www.burhtun.com/bs/EVEportraitsOldVSNew.jpg
There are really only two respectable choices when it comes to race in EVE, Gallente and Minmatar. Minmatar suits me better.

Why do you say such things, we Amarr are a very caring, giving and loving race. Take for example how we treat our Slaver Hounds, we feed them, give them shelter, even play fetch with them ... just the same way we do with our Minmatar slaves.
The first hook for me was the Amarr ship designs, second was the old character designs (CCP, please bring back each races unique clothing and accessories, not this generic crap). And they have lasers, not those other crude weapons . I also like the whole dynamic with the lore for the Amarr, blindly following their percieved righteous path for the most part. It's all a nice change of pace to the types of races I would normally play.

Trial account was gallente, their diversity and relative fairness was appealing.
Then i saw this thing fly past that looked like a nasty deep sea fish, hmmm, Thrasher huh?
Norse flavour of minmatar seemed a bit fail, since that was an empire of empty barbarity, but the complex idea of them having once been the height of civilisation, then being enslaved, then breaking away seemed deeper than the other backstories. Also the hardmode aspect, i can fly gall and min to BS now and live in gallente hisec often. Ugly at first, the minmatar have really grown on me.

Minmatar, fighting for freedom against the ebil Amarr! Caldari, toy soldiers, Action Man (yawn). Amarr, pompous posh religious nutters. Gallente, French, nuff said, Waterloo, Trafalgar, WW1, WW2... not very good at pew-pew!

My first MMO was SWG where I was deeply involved in RP on Gorath. My char Vora Dumem was in the Rebel faction, from Coronet, University of Tyrena (RP story). When NGE struck I tried to adapt but my way of playing was practically out the window. So after 3 months into NGE I left and had a year-long offline hiatus.
When I started EVE I wanted to continue my char as close as possible. So the first two days in EVE I was doing nothing else than reading the lore to find the most appropriate race/bloodline to my Vora Dumem of SWG. So... Rebel - Coronet - University of Tyrena turned to Gallente - Intaki - University of Caille.
In SWG I did RP but no PvP. In EVE I do PVP but no RP (might change with Incarna). ______________________________________

I chose something which seemed sort of interesting, that would also get me into the game quicker.
Turned out I chose Achura, which, back then, were the best race to choose, now with the new character editor they're also the best looking ones - win.

Turns out i made the right choice couse i love being minmatar and wouldnt trade my hurricane for all the drakes in the universe. Chose sebiestor/thinkerer couse i tought it would have impact on gameplay (ships do look like they falling apart tought it might be good to know how to repair them :)) |

I picked Amarr for the whole "religious" aspect only to cross train Gallente and fight Amarr from a Role Play perspective. Basically my toon's parents were put to slavery then murdered (for their idea of a free world) by Amarr fanatics.
I was saved by Gallente friends of the family (sharing the view of a free world). I was raised with a Gallente spirit, and now taking revenge on the Amarr race (missions). I fly Gallente for missions (domi) and indy job (transport/hauling). My toon's look is that of a suffering Amarr turned rogue in the name of freedom.

I chose Gallente mainly because I was a huge RPer when Kerin was created and I liked the idea of being a goody-goody space hippy all about freedom and love in a game where you mainly just blow stuff up. Also nearly all of my RL friends had already chosen to be Minmatar rebel slaves. Back then we only had the choice between full blooded Gallente and the Intaki and the Intaki just looked a bit weird really, plus full blooded Gallente could choose to wear a cool hair-visor thing. I completely gimped myself with all the useless charisma my background choices gave me, but it was totally worth it for the hair. I really miss my pile of neon blue hair and that visor. :( --- Chocolate McGubbins for all! --- |

Hated the idea of religious slavers so Amarr was out. Hated the idea of a big corporation so Caldari was out.
Fine with the democratic race. Fine with the ex slaves. Liked the look of both races actually made a bad ass looking black chick with dreads too.
It came down to preferring the look of the Gallente frigates and stations. Everything Minmatar is too dark and just blends into the background and station (some Minmatar ships are practically invisible in the new Incarna hangars. at least on my computer).
Liked the look of this character too so decided to go with Gallente but fly other races ships. Can fly them all now but I'm focusing on Amarr at the moment.

Gallente girls are beautiful and had wonderful glassy helms in previous versions of character editor (probably will cost $500 in NeX) - and I never regret anything about Gallente especially after Incarna: these barbies are pure perfection.
Also I quickly realised hybrids sucks and didn't train them - instead trained missiles and projectiles (+ Caldari and Minmatar ships => Machariel, Rattle, CNR, Navy Scorp, Tengu and other wonderful ships).

I chose Intaki because it seemed like a good back story. At that time Caldari would have been better, more base perception and that was less training time overall, but I did not know that. After all this time I have enjoyed the back story more than the reduced training time. I spend my time in Minmatar space mostly and until fairly recently they sucked in combat. It seems like it all evens out over time.

I went Gallente because Amarr are religious nuts, Caldari are fanatically capitalist, and while I kinda liked the underdog rebelliousness of Minmatar, they were too much like zelots themselves.
Gallente seemed the closest to my own ideals, so it was a natural fit. Plus historically I've enjoyed pet classes. Of course it wasn't till later I realised that Gallente were the bastard race of Eve so far as CCP seems concerned (hybrid tracking issues, drones having no implants, no damage mods, drone AI being bugged for years now, etc). So I now fly Minmatar ships 90% of the time. -- The Door! |

My first character was actually an Intaki. Democracy and freedom sounded nice and gallente ships appeared as best looking to me back then in 2006. I was pretty happy, until after a week or two i discovered what a 3 in perception actually really means
Looked for the race with most balanced attributes for combat character, chose Achura. Tried to create a male one, but they were so incedibly ugly despite all my efforts... Always secretly envied Khanid(arr, best looking females back then, awesome clothing options, imo), pure Gallente and Deteis females. Now, after the new character creation... ehehe, naawww
Also it's kind of nice to incidentially have picked a name that does not start with an "A".

I choose Deteis, because of Falcon.
But also because when I started playing each bloodline was unique in that it had a nice set of starter skills and you really felt that the decisions you made at that point were personal and significant. It gave me an attachment to the character that you cannot get since they removed this and made every character pretty much the same.

When I rolled this character, you started with specific attributes and skills, based on race, bloodline, and background, and I was planning to do industry/R&D.
When I found out how ungodly boring industry and R&D were, I began pewpewing, thankfully Sebbies had an ok attribute spread for that. I only joined EM and began RPing a few months ago, but luckily, everything sort of fell into place.
If I could do-over? Probably would have gone Vherokoir.

Gallente was my first choice and I stayed with it. I didn't really care about the looks (also that's why before the remap of the character portrait, I looked terrible), I did care about the fact that the gallente represented a federation.
I really loved it and at first I even tried roleplaying it. Later I didn't really care that much when I left FW, but that was also the reason I loved gallente even more - fighting for the federation!
In general, liked their storyline and loved their political system.

There's two answers to this for me :
First time was May 2003. Took the afternoon off and went into town to find a new game, Barrysworld (if any of you UK/EU guys remember that) was in the process of being canned by Game so a few of us bought Eve. Anyway got box, went to pub and had a pint while reading manual. Mining sounded epic (no joke) with pirates attacking etc etc.
So I went Gallente-Intaki which at the time was basically industry. I got the arse shot off me repeatedly No remaps or implants, slog it out if you want to fire a gun...
Second time was 2008. Decided to go "hard mode" which at the time was Minmatar. Result = woohoo! Got it right for once

I joined long after the starter skills era, and really had no briefing on the racial playtypes, so I chose Minmatar Vherokior drifter since I love to play the wandering Gypsy sort. Low and behold, roleplay isn't as prevalent as I thought, but at least their ships are fun
When I got my wife to sign up, I explained that the character background was all flavor, and we could spec her in whatever race's ships/weapons she wanted later. After watching her scroll though the various bloodlines, she settled on Vherokior mystic. I asked her about her choice, and her response remains in my bio to this day:
Me: "So I see you've chosen Minmatar as your race, any particular reason for choosing them?" Her: "Because the other three sound like doucebags"

In hindsight I would have looked at all the different races, realised the flavour text meant nothing and not spent as long as I did specialising in Gallente skills. I mean, would anyone train hybrids if they knew how much they sucked?
Started as Gallente because I like freedom, democracy and hi tech things like drones. I also hate slavery, and dislike tribalism and the zaibatsu mentality. So yeah
