I'm now a six month old noob and have noticed a few inconsistancies in the Eve world. Such as...
Humans are the only sentient race? Not a single alien anywhere.
Deadspace - I can warp out but can't warp in. Rats can use micro warp, I can't.
No gravity. You can float up to a planet with out falling in to it.
Why do I get flames when my Hull's getting battered and NPCs don't?
Don't get me wrong I love Eve and these things don't bother me. I just think it's funny. Has anyone else spotted any Eveisms? tht |

TBH man, dont complain about the flames from your ship, they arent even supposed to be there. If u wanna go in comparison to RL, there is no oxygen in space, therefore the fire cant be sustained. I dont mind the little things that EVE lacks, because frankly, this game pwns too much to complain about little crap like that. If u wanna complain, go play City of Heroes, that game is full of whiners... Vin Diesel claims he has never hailed a taxi. He just runs up to them at stop lights, opens the door, shoves the current passenger over, and tells the cab driver what his new destination is. |

Where does the fire come from is my question...no air in space = no fire...unless it is burning using the air in your ship but then that means air is leaking meaning the space vacum would suck the air out instantly :) (\_/) (O.o) (> <) This is Bunny. Well, the fire is bieng fueled by air escaping from your ship (apperently), but it shouldnt be that bloody huge. -----------------

5000 explored star systems in EVE. Chances of life are stupidly slim, nevermind intelligent life. And yet we have Fedo, long-limbed Roes, Furriers, etc. EVE is not a realistic game. ---------------- Haha, stupid monkey! Now I'VE got the Oscar! Enjoy your worthless gun! |

the only thing that really annoys me is that you can get moons that are closer to the system's sun than they are to their planets..

AFAIK, you can only warp in because there are beacons placed inside the deadspace pocket you can use to lock onto. Deadspace doesn't stop you warping, it just prevents you from getting a lock for your warp-to location. Or something like that. ====================================

Obviously the fuel must contain both components for a reaction, as it reacts in the engine to push your ship forward. Our current space vehicles have tanks containing both fuel and oxygen, as can be seen in this pretty little picture here: http://science.nasa.gov/headlines/y2002/images/ssme/et.gif
The ships in Eve use all kinda futuristic forms of power, from fusion reactors to antimatter. I don't think anyone here can rightly claim to know what antimatter would look like spewing from a damaged ship.
I must say, however, that the flames do look pretty lame considering the environment. It would at least look a little better if there was visible leaking of gasses and liquids into space. Homeworld had pretty nice damage effects...

agreed 100%.
and even if the flame was just a nice purple or green colour or something it would look at least a bit more space-age.

oooh, good timing on this thread, i had an "eveism" earlier:
So, i'm hauling a Badger Mk2 full of ammo around earlier, torps, bullets, charges. If it can be fired i'm carrying it.
If i get ganked what *should* happen is i would take half the system and possibly a couple of small moons around me out with the resulting explosion that a hauler full of explosives would produce, just imagine it, you could do suicide badger runs on gatecamps and all sorts
But no, if someone takes my badger, all i'm gonna get is the same ole small explosion as badger full of refugees would produce. ___

according to the short story, the sound is emulated in the pod to take advantage of the human senses. otherwise space would be pretty quiet and boring.... and you might get... SPACE MADNESS!$!$$$$$
as far as flaming ships, well if there was a fuel leak or oxygen leaking from the ship because of hull breach, well, i guess that would explain it, but it wouldn't be the size of your ship, thats for sure. also, i think if you had hull breach, it'd be pretty hard to warp... wouldn't that just tear your ship apart?
the premise behind EVE is that humans had entered the world of EVE through the EVE gate, then fractionalized somehow... not quite sure, but the world of EVE was unhabited prior to human contact, so that is why everyone is human. and it was just unihabited... so maybe there is life, such as the slavehound and other animals, but no sentient beings, at least none that have surfaced... maybe they are so advanced... they live in another dimension or something.
as far as other "Eveisms" one thing that bothers me is the "asteroid belts" they are really just debris fields... but what keeps them sitting there... and around planets. why aren't they moving?

Well you wouldn't see the disappearing part, because you'd be caught up in an explosion approximately as powerful as all the world's nuclear weapons combined blowing up in one instant. -- The best description of alliances, ever:

And the scary part is they are playing with antimatter in partical accelerators in real life here on earth
Anyway.. If anti matter and matter meet it will not go away, but turn into energy.. What type of energy I cant tell you..
We cant make things just go away and be gone.. (with the curret nature laws) But we can turn turn it into something else, be it another type of matter or energy. ------------- Most tired of thing atm: - Mods on the forum saying: "Please use the bug report page to submit bugs, the forum is not the place to post them." and then closing a topic. |

There is no explosion in matter/anti-matter reaction. You get two gammarays (per proton/anti-proton) going to opposite directions with fixed energy.
In space the density of matter is not enought to make a simultaneous transformation. You put a 1m^3 block of anti-matter in space, and it will take years to dissipate (unless it gets hit by something solid).

Something solid like the jaged edge of the hole in your ship when it got sucked out into space? :)
I plucked this off of some random news article from nasa.gov
Quote: The energy released from proton-antiproton annihilation is 10 billion times greater than oxygen-hydrogen combustion and at least 100 times more energetic than fission or fusion. In other words, one gram of antihydrogenùthe mirror image of a hydrogen atomùreacted with an equal amount of normal hydrogen provides the same amount of energy as 23 Space Shuttle External Tanks.
If it really produces that much energy and that energy interacted with the inside of your ship, that would probably cause an explosion.
But none of that really matters, since EvE is total Science Fantasy and it works however the Devs program it to work. Realism doesnt have a place in it.

Hehe, I've started to see a certain pattern with threads like this.
Original poster: Reason for EVE being unrealistic, pointing out inconsistencies that often don't have anything to do with gameplay.
Coy science guru: Comes up with several, semi-plausible pseudo-science reasons to 'fix' said inconsistencies. Cites real-world examples if possible. Drops hints that you can explain anything away with enough creativity.
Opportunistic crusader: Agrees with original poster, but then twists his words to support the fixing of some issue or a change of gameplay that he has been lobbying for.
Angry fanboi: Flames original poster for dubious reasons. Suggests that anyone criticizing EVE should take a look at how illogical other games are.
Equally angry EVE hater: Agrees with original poster and flames the angry fanboi, suggesting that he has his head up his posterior (or similar). May or may not say that he has already suspended his account, or that he is only logging on to change skills.
Bored browser: Writes about his disinterest in the subject. The words "it's only a game" are 87% likely to appear in the post.

Not if the ship has magnetic containment field preventing just that. Without the containment field the ship would just disappear in a huge gammaray burst.

I reckon myself and Beringe are both bored browsers.
However, the slaver hound issue is quite simple to explain. When humans travelled through the eve gate, they took all manner of items (wheat another example) with them to sustain life. I like to imagine someone took their pet Rottweiler through, it bred with somebodys Tosa and over the years thid new dog breed evolved into...the Slaver Hound.

about the hull getting ripped apart if it's been breached and you warp. Wouldn't that require outer friction? (gas, debri, so forth). As for with the doppler effect in warp, isn't that correct? Think i recall getting redish colouring from the point i came from, and blue colouring around the spot i was warping to. disagree with you completely, the sheer amount of air escaping from your ship, (given that space is a vaccum hence air would be coming out FAST) would pretty much create an inferno!
I do however think that if you receive that level of damage on your ship you should start losing ship health automaticaly at a low rate (fire damage)or maybe at a rate were even using a armour/structural repairer jsut balances you out until you dock or a mate comes along to help you repair.

Yeah, I didn't mean to sound negative. I just thought it was funny.
Some more sterotypes:
Silly rebutter: Derails the thread by saying something completely off-topic, often aimed at a certain poster he knows. Might post something nonsensical just to tick someone off.
Alliance stalker: Is in the opposite alliance/corp to the original poster and will post in all his threads and flame him, no matter the topic.
Know-it-all: Considers himself an expert on said RL science issue and will scoff at random individual's pseudo-science ideas, even if they were light-hearted. Probably needs a humor implant.
Sci-fi fan: Prefers some esoteric brand of pseudo-science that doesn't really fit with the EVE world. Will try to argue a shift towards the brand of pseudo-science that he likes.

you guys think the flames in this game are bad you should see how they looked in Earth and Beyond. My progen warrior's ship would get damaged and I'd be shooting flames out from all over the place. You would swear that the ship would burn up in seconds looking that way.
and i doubt air would rush out into space so quick that a fire couldn't maintain itself.. even though thinking it through makes me think it would, but I'm no expert on fuel and it's effectiveness. Some fuels might burn even at the speeds space would pull it from a ship. I would think it would look more like the flame out of a blowtorch though and not the puffy slow looking fire we got now.
... ok, im giving myself a headache.
my list of eveisms
1. Ship speed.. ok, nothing can be done about it, fine. I still think it's funny though.
2. The way ships are talked about. The moa is something only people with good standing towards the caldary navy can get, yet they're as common as frigates.
3. The way new ships and items are just introduced. No explanation for the 'new' battleships? :P mining ships? POS? it's like they've always been here.. but they havent. I would love for CCP to add backstory for everything they add to the game. "Races allow the sale of player owned structures". Just make some sense of the game
4. Where are pod's warpdrives? How come some frigates are smaller then shuttles? how am I able to dock my raven into these stations that I KNOW my ship can't fit in?
5. How can I fit this HUGE veld roid with 200k volume into this tiny cargo container? I'ts funny when you think about it.. sitting next to a veld roid 100x's bigger then your ship and you somehow fit the whole thing into this little cargo container
6. Sorta like 5. But how was I able to fit POS equip in my badger mk2? I mean, I could fit 3 badgers inside a silo but somehow my badger was able to hold 3 of them, haha. Same with ship maintanance array, how am I able to fit 10 battleships inside of it?
7. A Mega can hit a Scorpion moving at 120m/s at 20km just fine with it's guns. A mega can't hit a Moa moving at 180m/s, nearly as big as a Scorpion, at 20km. Why? Cruisers are as slow, nearly as bad when it comes to agility and almost as big as a battleship (caldari)... balance is good, but I just think it's funny
8. Coercer sitting 40m away from a barren asteroid the size of 5 stations stacked on top of each other and I miss every hit. A cormorant can sit inside a battleship, INSIDE, and miss every single shot firing at it.

As with real life mining, what you take out isn't 100% pure ore. Have to assume a lot of the roid end up as refuse in space (we just don't see it float around).

Actually, they do put up backstory, which I suppose you didn't notice. In the weeks before Exodus deployment there were tons of news stories about ORE negociating with empires that didn't want them to release starbases to the open market, and how they were planning to sell mining barges on the open market. There were also news items about CONCORD planning to recognize alliances as sovreign nations, and so on. ----------------------------------

A BS travelles at about 500km/hour. Which is slower then the speed of many objects in earth atmosphere.
In relation, how come we have ships that go faster then light yet can not propel them selves to any sort of reasonable speed.
Ya the sound thing as well.
When a ship explodes it should send massive ammounts of particals through space and termendous velocitys. Why is my ship never hit?
How come our guns need to track when orbiting an object?
Why do weapons have a fall off? Whats slowing them down past a given distance?
We have the technology to build space stations, jump gates, go faster then light. Yet our computers still havn't figured out how to 'lead' a target consitantly?

Well the doppler effect is a little bit silly. I mean you are travelling plus light speed so by the time you see something you've already past it. Then again you're probably travelling in subspace or something silly as that so no rules we know today have to apply. Anyway I've never really paid any attention to all those pseudo science stuff, to me saying it's magic is just as plausable.

I must say, however, that the flames do look pretty lame considering the environment. It would at least look a little better if there was visible leaking of gasses and liquids into space. Homeworld had pretty nice damage effects...
IMHO Homeworld was much better on the realistic art department, period. CCP is great with all the artsy futuristic looks and all that, but IMHO something that looks realistic always looks better.

"Why?"
" I don't know but it looks great don't you think?"

Well, it's possible the mining lasers do some basic stripping out of useless material as they mine? Which would tie in nicely with why the modulated mining laser crystals need refining skills. Of course, there would still be the question of where said waste material went!
Originally by: ErrorS 6. Sorta like 5. But how was I able to fit POS equip in my badger mk2? I mean, I could fit 3 badgers inside a silo but somehow my badger was able to hold 3 of them, haha. Same with ship maintanance array, how am I able to fit 10 battleships inside of it?
The answer to this is that they're flat-pack kits I can fit several flat-pack wardrobes in my car, but once I've assembled them there's no way they'd fit. Even most current sattelites are desiged this way - they pack up ultra-small to fit in the rocket's payload bay, then all the antenna arrays, solar panels etc fold out on deployment.
Originally by: Lorth How come our guns need to track when orbiting an object?
Because the eve tracking system is simplified to reduce the huuuge load it would take to implement a perfectly accurate one.
Originally by: Lorth Why do weapons have a fall off? Whats slowing them down past a given distance?
It's not so much slowing them down (although I know that was mentioned falsely in some item descriptions), as their accuracy drops. However good your aiming mechanism, there's going to be a limit to how accurately you can point your gun - the error in the pointing is going to be some angle. At close ranges, it doesn't matter at all, the small angle error transfers into a small offset on where your shot actually hits, but the offset won't be enough to make you miss your target. As the range becomes longer, the offset gets larger. If the offset is +/- 100m at 100km range, there is a uniform chance of each offset value, and your target is a circle 50m radius, you'll miss half the time. Of course, technically fall-off should be affected by target size like tracking is. As for why this is different on different guns - maybe the mounting used is different depending on the intended fucntion of the gun...so long-range guns get the "sniper" mounting, low tracking, high accuracy etc.

I've always wondered why sentry guns at stargates never open fire on npc pirates.

The air would flow out of a ship by pressure differential. Which is only 1 bar. Unles the hole is huge, the amount of air escaping is rather small. It's not like a 1 bar pressure difference tears things up highly. Especially not if it's bolted down (like a ship).

How can we tell what is real and what isn't? As soon as we climb into those pods and plug in to our ships, we are completely dependent on a view of our surroundings that is mediated by camera drones and the pod software. How do we know that the images we see actually even reflect the world around us? Already, the pod provides us with artificial sounds to improve our situational awareness. What if the images provided are artificial too? For all we know, everything that happens after we plug in to our pods could be fake - we could all just be taking part in some grand experiment: a simulation or game to entertain those mysterious Jovians who provided the pod technology to begin with.

Originally by: Tobiron I'm now a six month old noob and have noticed a few inconsistancies in the Eve world.
Why is there sound in space? Because their is a medium sound can travel through? Me no think so. But I suppose it's a game...
Read Jovian Wetgrave... its just simulated sound...
