Your talknig about a secound game that pretty complex & the compation in FPS is allready so high ccp couldnt compete at best by some fps code but why ?, you can RP it & all ya mates dock & go play CS for an hour.
Loads think they wanna be able to land but what gains are ya thinking of getting & how would it improve a space game ?. _______________________________________

Actually landing aint part of the deal. Entering the atmosphere and possibly docking with something like station might be possible.
There will be no getting out of your ship though. And apart from that Planets will simply be Space with a diffrent background and a floor to crash into. Atleast thats what the preview looked like ---------------------------

Freelancer style bars & stuff maybe fun to hang out in but could be added to stations, still alot of work cos were gunno need bodys & wont be happy with 1 or 2 types.
I assume some of ya are thinking as big as farcry & wanna go round getting plant samples & stuff, as over the top as it is maybe something for a long away future game.
The amount of location would be a nightmare & already we see people saying systems look alike BUT what ccp could do is get a template for land & loads of default ojects background & then let every user that wants to make a map, that would then give the mix needed & use the crap 1s for far out planets & the best for common spots.
still well in dreanland & i dont think it brings much to the game, ow 1 more nice idea this touches back to eve then, if i kill ya down on the planet I can take ya stuff out ya hanger ? now that could be fun. _______________________________________

Edited by: Sieur NewT on 04/05/2005 11:43:58 On my side i will see the Landing part similar to the dock to station one. Then you will have some outside view, and a local market give huge quantities of basic stuffs like water, milk , construction blocks... Desertic planets will buy water, oceanic will buy construction blocks...
Other good thinks could be some players factory on the planet, producing the same types of things... I wants my ants farms... or quafe factory :)
So very few to develop, and more content to play with... could also land on planets when no stations :) ---- Sauvez les castors, mangez la foret! |

The only big benefit of planets I could see are having monsters and animals to shoot at.
Anything else that would be added with them would just be variations on current themes. You could get resources of a planet, but that would just be POSes on the ground. Or you'd have different types of stations to land at. Not a bid difference.
Unless you can get out of your ship, and either run or drive around, there's not a whole lot that planets would add. And I don't see either of those happening for years.
Also, which ships will be able to land? Most of the existing ones aren't exactly aerodynamic. Most all would burn up on entry. Can you imagine trying to fly a Vigil or Tristan in an atmostphere?

Yes. Would be nice if you could land on a planet, get out of your ship and go do some shopping. Perhaps buy yourself a new suit and a tie, get your pants pressed, your shoes shined, and so on. |

I played this game when it was Earth and Beyond. Pretty planets and stations could never make up for the fact there was nothing to do once you got there.

flying around the surface is just next step from deadspace. add one large object around it and prevent warp/mwd and you got a planet

There is one Game named "MANKIND". CCP Should look at this for Planet Ideas.
I have played this few Years, It had too many bugs and cheats, but the Concept for the Planets is good.
And yes, it is very hard to implement.

Well, IMO it would be nice if you could just land on planet stations, and maybe have some extra station services if it's a planet station.
Also the trading and market system could benefit from this. Fx. only being able to buy/sell special stuff on planets.
It would give alot of extra depth to the universe, since there IS supposed to live people on the planets and now it's a bit strange that you are totally cut of from interacting with them.
I really don't care about being able to run around in 1st or 3rd person.

why so complicated ?
There was this second part of ELITE called Final Frontier and iirc you could planetfall and land to put out some harvester like structures there.
At least let us CRASH into them damnit..I feel like a friggin ghost sometimes when I pass thru them ;)

Perhaps have planets be a place one could put up a station of sorts we can already deploy them why not have a semi easyer to contain version on a planet simply because its on a dang planet
Gives war a new meaning other then ants in grass shooting at each other gives us a chance to more or less customize the game a bit... no thats wrong and i think id love blowing up somones factory and then looting the good stuff and running away after there ground turrets can lock me :P

Something like Master of Orion 3 interaction for planetary systems or something similiar to several of the old games that I have come across with a long time ago. I can not remember them atm but when I do, I can write them here because they were pretty simple and fun. ----------------------------------- Eve is all about Darwinism: 1. i wish people would actually read the Short Story, the only reason the guy ended up paralised was because he didn't go through years of training. All pod pilots (you and me) have had this training and thus can enter / exit our pods whenever we want to.

Quite true.
So, as can be seen from the numerous posts above, there are lots of games that implemented planetary visitation... granted, they generally implemented it from the start. Plus E&B gave you the ability to move around the station in character, as have other games.
I believe all this supports answering the question of "is it hard to implement" with, No, not if it's planned out. (As evidenced by the Kali expansion). Any more nay-saying?

Well Battlecruiser Millenium did it. They allowed you to walk around on planets and travel around in a relativly big universe. It should be like Freelancer IMO or E&B. You can walk around ect but you can't leave. Besides, whats the point of adding in the ability to walk around the planet? Next thing players want is animals and then guns to shoot at the animals and then experience for shooting the animals and then items from the animals and then clothes.... The list is endless and next thing we know, EVE is a 5 GB game :/ Would also take ages to implement. No, should be kept basic but satisfying. The game shouldn't stray off the space RPG genre and move into FPS as well.

Battlecruiser was also a steaming pile of dung.
300 page manual and none of the stuff worked more often than not. Just nver had the programming skills to implement all the goodies they wanted.
If they'd have just been happy with good graphics and rolling dice for some of the pie in the sky stuff ( like landing troops to take ground emplacements) that game could have gone places.

I think FPS (action) will seriously not go well with this game... This game is more based on strategy as it requires a lot of skills in assuming and planning. Just my opinion though.
