Some Japanese named ships (and yes I use the kanji in game, gotta love unicode enabled text fields)
salvaging cormorant: 燃無芥丸
Its totally made up, I romanize it as: moenashigomi-maru
which (very) loosely translates to: unburnable garbage ship
Badger MkII: 大胴丸
Again, totally made up, romanized: daidou-maru
literally: big hulled ship. although dou is also used in armour terminology for breatplates, hence babelfish's translation of: Large Curiass.
other ships:
Hawk: Merlin (of course)
Missioning Myrmidon and Drake: Gere and Freke (mythological wolves of odin and the names of my dogs)
and for somereason, I keep naming rifters "scrute me, I dare you"

I like to name PVP ships things like:
*Train
*What a
*Your Life is a
*Go Die in a
*Come Salvage This
That way when you die everybody will see these on overview:
"Train Wreck"
"What a Wreck"
"Your Life is a Wreck"
"Go Die in a Wreck"
"Come Salvage This Wreck"

By using forgotten etymological techniques I have been able to combine the words PWN and Paladin to name my marauder PWNadin.
It is mind boggling how that works out.

I will usually name my ships from the freespace 1 and 2 series from the great war.
I call my megatrons Bastions unless it s avindicator or a navy or te tech II.
I call my Hyperions = hecate. from freespace 2. it is a name for te newer destroyers. In te game the destroyers are te bs in te game.
I call my Haulers = Soc
I call my Mymnridon = Lysander
Brutix = Hamaako
or others.
Catalyst = Unicron
coercer = Omikron
Frigates range as well. Depends o wat i want them to be.
Once the patch for the scramblers come out. I will call my Arazu Dark Archon
Vigilance = Twilight Archon.
so it depends on what i am ueing the ships for as well.

Scorp: 'Digital'
Raven: 'Disorder'
Crow/Ranis: 'Thieves Like Us'
Helios: 'Insight'
Deimos: 'Leave Me Alone'
And many, many more....'Transmission', 'Isolation', 'Decades', 'Ice Age', etc, etc, etc...

I take most of my ship names from various references from the Warhammer 40k (including the Horus Heresy) and Warcraft universes:
Maelstrom: Aeria Gloris - (Literally: Heavenly Glory) Name of a Black Ship that flew with the Death Guard expedition during the Great Crusade. Black Ships were used by the Silent Sisters to hunt down rogue psykers.
Hurricane: Ventus Furor II - (Literally: Wind Fury II) Not a reference to anything 40k or pre-Heresy but I like the name. First ship was lost during a bodged Blockade mission.
Scythe: Ferrus Manus - Ferrus Manus was the primarch of the Iron Hands legion. He had living metal hands and was a master blacksmith
Mammoth: Grobbulus, Nurgleth - Twin ship at opposite ends of the galaxy (sort of). Grobbulus is a fat boss in Naxxaramas and Nurgleth is an alternate name for Nurgle, Lord of Decay.
Hoarder: Mortarion, Typhon - Mortarion is the primarch of the Death Guard legion and Typhon was the captain of the first company (later known as Typhus, Herald of Nurgle)
Apothesis: Light's Hope û Named after Light's Hope Chapel. Argent Dawn base of operations in the plaguelands.
Rifter: Scourge of Angels û Pewpew'd enough Angel Cartel so it was a fitting name.
Thrasher: Trasher û Salvaging boat, picks up the Trash
Stabber: Shrike û Named after a Raven Guard space marine, specialists of hit and run warfare.
Reaper: Little Horus, Aximand û Little Horus was the nickname a captain of the Lunar Wolves (later the Sons of Horus). Named because he looked akin to his primarch, Horus. Aximand was little Horus' true name.
Breacher: Baal û Home system from the Blood Angels space marines
Probe: Mosquito û Small, fast and full of....blood? Maybe.
Wreathe: Barbarus û Named after the Death Guard homeworld.
Burst: Miner Trouble, û Play on words
Vigil: Alpharius, Omegon û Primarch of the Alpha Legion, specialists of the covert warfare. Omegon was his twin brother.
Slasher: Sanguinius û Kinda looks like it has wings like Sanguinius, primarch of the Blood Angels, did
Yes, I semi-collect ships...
