Edited by: Tarrasque on 10/07/2005 03:45:03 Since the COLD WAR patch my pc has been locking up and I need to reboot my PC every time. I play maybe 5 hours a day and I can get anywhere up to 4 lockups in one session. This wasnt really an issue before.
This seems to happen randomly but I hove noticed a trend of more frequent lockups when I have many ingame windows open.
I have never had this happen with any game I played including many FPS games , Everquest 2 , etc. It ONLY happens with EVE. Thanks for any assistance you can give me as I am on the trial and if this persists it will make me decide whether to continue to play or not.
I have a p4 2.4b , 1.25 gig RAM , and a leadtek geforce4 6600GT .. my setup is fine and I am running some of the latest drivers.

I'm going to post in this thread too.
It's something that truly needs to be addressed. I have spent countless hours formatting, reinstalling, upgrading/downgrading drivers .. I have tried everything to rectify this problem.

Add a second hard-disk, install XP on that, boot XP to play EVE. That fixed it for me (I use WinME on the main system.)

Same problems for me. Only started happening on my new machine (Alienware with a GeForce 6800 Ultra SLI set-up). It locks the machine up totally. Normally happens when launching eve but sometimes at other times.
Definately not temperature related.

Thanks for all your replies. Glad to see I am not alone here which rules out a few ideas I had like my gfx card was on the way out or something, but its clearly not, its also 6 months old. I noticed too what one person said that it seems to happen when launching from a station etc and it seems that I also frequently lock up at that point. I have also noticed a trend with more frequent lock ups when the market window is open.
The only other thing I have done recently (which I should have done ages ago hehe) is install xp sp2. I have played once since installing sp2 and didn't get any lock up during that session, but it was only a short playing session so its hard to say if that has resolved the issue. I hope at least on the developers side, that they could reply to this thread just to at least say they are looking into why this occurs, as I mentioned in my original post, it only happens with EVE. Other than that, this game rocks
apologies .. wrong character in last post

This sounds VERY familiar... I was locking up and crashing before, but then I upgraded my gfx card - BF2 was crashing then too - until I replaced my memory.
Sounds like I had a duff memory module, which didn't help the diagnosis, but I also have a 6600GT card and someone said further on that they have the 6800... perhaps it's a problem with the latest gfx drivers from nVidia? Perhaps CCP ought to look at SP2 and the latest Catalyst driver while used in conjunction with the latest EVE build?
I even reinstalled DirectX 9c and EVE (downloaded the latest build, especially to solve this problem).

OK, I have a similar system (Athlon 2500+, 1 Gb RAM and a PY Geforce 6600GT) and I've found that the problem seems to be the 6600GT overheating.
Solution: go for simple graphics settings and consider upgrading the fan that came with the card. I added a PCI header fan facing the back of the card (basically using the solder as a heatsink, sucking into the fan and throwing it out the back of the machine) and the combination has solved my problem. I also had intermittent problems with BF2 which have also been solved by this method.
I had no other problems with any other games, I'd like to point out - so this may well be the same problem with your setup. "Randomly" may not take into consideration the ambient temperature, whether or not you have the window open or if you have your door open or closed (all will affect air circulation and hence heat loss).
Also, check to make sure that your CPU fan isn't dusted up... giving mine a good clean (taking the fan off and carefully brushing out the heatsink) dropped my CPU by a few degrees, which helped. Be careful of artifical fibres though - may cause static (I used a cotton cloth).
I hope this helps - I've gone all day today without a crash of any kind - first time in weeks.

I cant see why I should have to change my gfx settings. Why would I never crash in many games and crash in EVE ? I have had Everquest 2 running for a week solid with no pc reboot and it never missed a beat. BF2 also never locks up. Clearly if all other games are running fine it leads me back to EVE itself. I am going to write to the developers and see If I can get to the bottom of this and If I cant get it fixed I think I will have to return to EQ2. Sigh .. I really don't want to as I love EVE.
As I type this I have just locked up 2 times in 2 hours.

This seems to be a familiar theme, here's my misadventures of cold war....
Pre cold I could run no problem, 1 acc, 2 acc's made no difference, alt & tabbing out of game was ok, now when i alt & tab its a 50/50 chance if i can get back into the game, still shows eve running but the screen wont load when i tab back to eve, also ctd's and pc lockups. Ctd's more common when running windowed.
At first i thought maybe my gfx card was on its way out, Ive an MSI x800xt plat edition, to be fair this is a good card, which ive added extra heats sinks to the memory on the card, ive another pc on my network with a x800pro also an MSI card also with mem heat sinks added, so i switched cards and still got the same problem.
Started looking for symptoms (other than playing eve ) and started to stress my pc to see if i could cause silmilar crashes, 3dmark bench tests one after the other, playing other demanding games with ramped up gfx, and after a 4 hour stint of benching and gaming I didnt have one issue (other than some tard with gimped rates during a CS:S game).
Loaded eve and after an extended session the random ctd's alt and tab crashes and worst of all the pc lock ups with a delightfull squealing coming from my speakers, which if im not mistaken is caused by excessive heat, all started again.
So with this in mind i installed motherboard monitor to check out cpu heat, apparently when i play eve my cpu temp increases from 38-40 degrees to 48 degrees, i stop playing and it drops back to around 40. No other game does this, obviously games make demands on gfx aswell so they dont hump the cpu like some app's but that is a huge increase in temp for one game, checked cpu priority its set to normal.
I get the alt & tab issues on my other pc but not the cpu temp increase and the random ctd's only start to occur when its ran for any great length of time.
box 1 Athlon XP3200 64bit cpu 754pin, 1 gig 400drr, ausu k8v mobo, msi x800xt pe
box 2 Athon XP2800, 1 gig 400ddr, msi n7n2g mobo, msi x800 pro.
Any chance of a response from someone at ccp with advice or information regarding changes in cold war that could cause issues.
I picked up this ace book today everyone rates it as a must buy for the budding military genius, tho ive decided to rename it as "Sun Tzu's art of the bloody obvious" |

I'm having similar problems since cold war patch. Have to reboot my PC more than 5 times a day. Have tried reinstalling Eve from scratch, updating sound and video drivers and even getting a new sound card, but still have the problem. I usually get the crash when entering something on the market (even sometimes twice in a row with same item), but it also happens when travelling in space or trying to set scanner overview settings. I've suspected audio as this seems a common source of problems and the Eve User Interace uses sounds all over the place.
I had an old Sound Blaster Live Value card, but switching to a new Sound Blaster 24-bit card made no difference. For Graphics using GeForce FX 5200, DirectX 9.0C. PC using Win2K and has 768MB RAM

i have similar problems... my computer reboots automatically during some scenes of combat.during agent missions it hapened so often(after turning on heavy nosf,or upon missile impact..)that i already lost 2 500m worth ships.sent a petition so am still waiting. now till this thing is fixed i dont want to undock again. i never had this problem before cold war,at least not so often and totally reproducable. i tried reinstalling the latest nvidia drivers, got all over dx9c reinstall but it seemes nothing helps.not to say that am a bit p***ed of loosing a 500m bs due to few frigs and only one zor bs.
i got athlon xp 2200+ 756mb ram geffo ti 4200 no overcloaking, case wide open and everything clean
during the latest lost i think the heavy nosf graphical effect booted my pc,i waited for the frigs to come into range, killing the other npcs, the moment i turned on the nosf my comp booted.anyone else had the same problem?
cheers and hope ccp will answer soon

A completely fresh install of the latest EVE client. Then in the cache folder copy over your Settings folder. Doing this should mean you have a nice working game with minimal ctd (you will always get the rare occaisional one) and will still have your BMs in folders and your Buddies list full.

Had the freezes, CTD's and sudden reboots too. Installed newest drivers: nothing. Cleared cache: nothing. Flashed new BIOS: nothing. Raised chipset and DRAM voltage in BIOS for 0.1V and that fixed it for me. Seems that Eve uses many hardware resources altogether, especially after Cold War patch. So the voltage probably collapses in certain situations for a short moment resulting in a complete freeze or a reboot. My mainboard is a Gigabyte K8NS Pro, Ati Radeon X800 Pro gfx card and 2x512MB Corsair XMS3200 DDR400 (that do not run in 400Mhz dual channel mode on that crappy board).

Edited by: Khonn on 25/09/2005 14:39:18 Same problem here. The most major problem I have is my screen freezing. Funniest part is I can hear actions going on in EVE through my speakers, but my screen is froze up.
Recently I have been getting CTD's. And yes, freezing screen is still there.
Gets real annoying trying to play like that.
System: AMD Athlon 2000+ 512 MB DDR ram Nvidia GeForce4 Ti4200 128mb DDR ram AGP 8x Windows XP Cable modem connection
I have tried using nvidia drivers from the 56.72 version to the 78.01 version with no help. I have rolled back my directx drivers from 9.0c to 8.1 to no help, and then upgraded them to 9.0b, and still no help.
I have never had these problems until this last big patch. Be nice not to have your screen lockup while just engaging in combat. Not too fun.

Got the same problem as everyone else. It's been getting worse over time. Almost unplayable now. Don't dare taking missions since the screen freezes up for about 10-15 seconds every 2 minutes. Alot of time for rats to approach me. Someone should do something about this since theres alot of ppl experiencing it.

I'll throw myself into this mix too and voice my disgust at the lack of "support" from CCP on this.
I'm runing:
AMD 64bit XP3800 2gb DDR memory 600gb S-ATA Drive/ATA Drives (with 2 EVE installations, still no good, so changing drives was not a solution). Nvidia 7800GTX Ultra 256mb - PCI-E - Running latest drivers
My onboard LED Temperature reading shows NO signs of overheating as it locks up. EVE is the only game to give me any problems, BF2 works fine, even the dreaded "Boiling Point - Road to Hell" works łberfine.
I am getting annoyed at this bug, and it's actually stopping me playing now. Best one was where it locked up as a 90,000isk rat jumped into the belt i was in...it ripped my Retreiver apart when I came back :/
Please at least answer us here to say that you acknowledge the problem, and that a solution will be forthcoming soon(ish).

Hello all
I am another person who is having this problem...Mine is very tepremtal, i have looked at event viewer...tried using the Eve log viewer but because that needs to be saved it impossible, due to me getting a FULL system lock up...no blue screen of death no auto restart.. I have tried everything on this forum to try and solve it..So now i am just going to post my spec and hopefuly it will get fixed soon.
i am loving this game so far btw.. ionly have 2 days left on my trail, so i am very reluctent to renew it and i know it would be such a shame not to play this game, coz it has so much depth.

I've had this problem over and over. Especially when docking. CPU gets hot and everything. I've defragged the drive and that helps in the short run. Then it slowly builds up again. The patch seems to have a lot of issues. Just run anti-virus and defraggers until they can fix the issue.

Hello all I have the freezing problem too but most times with overclocking..Without overclocking it no freezing but crash to desktop like hell..I didn't experience the game before the cold war exapansion. My specs: A64 3000+ venice MSI K8N Neo2 Platinum with the latest bios 1gb (2x512ram kingmax pc3200 dual channel..one stick have problems in test 8 in memtest-- i will get rid of it it soon) Gecube 9550XT with 5.9 catalyst wxp sp2 (tested on my fav: w2k pro sp4 same behaviour) Terratec Aureon 7.1 space latest beta drivers...i payed 120$ on this and is awesome...I recommend it..Serious Sam 2 is the ONLY game i have sound problems in rest is beatiful..Creative sucks.. Anyway for all ATI users who run desktop resolution over 1024x768 it will freeze!!! NFSU2 freezing after a couple of minutes of play..It's my test game and this is from a couple of months.I own a 21 inch eizo f931 monitor and i know.. Reduce the Desktop resulution to 1024 to fix stuff. And like an info i run all time with 100hz forced refresh rate..No AA and anisitropy..Maybe this will help Nvidia Users.I hope CCP and ATI will solve this issue soon...Thank you

Edited by: riprjak on 02/10/2005 09:39:15 Same issue here. NOT overclocked. Hardlock under windows XP professional 32bit AND 64bit (havent tried under wine yet, not THAT irritated), 1~15 minutes after login, regardless of settings (changed processor affinity, fullscreen/not, sound on/off etc). Always seems to happen on interaction with UI (right click, open in-game window). Leaves no core dump, system locks completely.
System is: AMD64 X2 3800+ XFX NVIDIA Geforce 7800 GTX 256MB Soundblaster Audigy 2 Value 4 x Hyundai 512MB PC2700 SDRAM (replacing with 2 x 2GB Corsair PC3200 sticks shortly) MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum Coolermaster Stacker case with more than enough ventilation Antec TruPower 480W PSU (benchtested at load and running to spec) 2 x 250GB WD SATA-II HDD 2 x 36GB WD Raptor SATA HDD (Raid-0) Pioneer DVD-RW DL
3rd party logging of voltages, fan speeds and temperatures shows no anomolies prior to hardlock.
Im about to install on the laptop to check that (ati 9700 gfx and intel processor). Have had no issues on simular system (K8N-FI) with a single core AMD64 3200+ and only 1 GIG of ram, but that was about 2 weeks ago before I started focussing on troubleshooting this system.
To be clear, my lockup issue appears constrained to my dual core system within the past TWO WEEKS. Sure, I only have 1 weeks before that to go on (being a new member), but the change is severe, from no issues to system lock within 10 minutes.
err! jak.
EDIT : I forgot to note that EVE is the only problem. Hell, not even BF-2 and KOTOR-2 crash on this system!! It has been prime-95 and looped 3d-mark 05 tested).

You need to turn off nveiw desktop manager. This is found in the desktop manager part of nveiw. This has a crash guard program that crashs eve and most new games. Also cleaning out the temporary internet files and cookies can sometimes help. Get ad-Aware spyware finder and run a scan sometimes helps too. ad-Aware is free so no need to pay.

Unfortunately this did not assist me. Whilst I do not use nview, I disabled ALL services and startup applications associated with the nvidia drivers (why do drivers require SO MANY ancilliary apps??); I have also tried rolling back through the past 3 releases of driver. Anyone else try this??
I also tried the same with the creative labs "helper" apps running in the background to no avail.
Once again I tried the above on both 32bit and 64bit windows. I probably need to get out more :)
Fortunately I can use my laptop to play this, so the issue isnt a showstopper for me; it would still be nice to play it at high res on the big monitor rather than the little 15" thing on the laptop...

I'd love to try this as I have a nvidia geforce4 Ti 4800 SE, and have been getting screen freezes for as long as 3 minutes at a time, about every 15 mins or so, as described by others in this thread. It never actually crashes for good, it just freezes up for a bit then resumes. Other than this it runs really smoothly with the graphics turned up full, so I know the card can handle it. I've lost two ships to this so far and am playing in a gimped fasion due to this. I hope to be able to fix it soon as my trial runs out in about a week and I'm really starting to get hooked, but I'm reluctant to convert my account to full subscription until I know I'll be able to play the whole game and not just do mining/courier missions in hi-sec space I would be very grateful if you could please explain to those of us that are not as IT savvy (or point us in the direction to where we can get this all explained in "laymans terms") exactly how to check:
a. how to find out what motherboard make/model I have installed b. What is meant by "AGP slot" and "chipsets" - am I supposed to only reinstall certain drivers? how do I know which ones? c. Also, how do I check if my graphics card drivers are the latest ones?
I just generally lack knowledge of these things and would really appreciate a newbies explanation, or a link to a good site where I can read up on all this in simple terms.
Thanks.

Check out this link to find out how to update drivers.
Updating Drivers 101
Here is an update: I was running fine for awhile, and then I started to get the same type of problems but not as extreme, so I dug deeper. I ran "dxdiag" from the run option in the start button, and when I looked at the "direct x files" tab I noticed that one certain file had a message with it. The file name was, for me atleast, d3dim700.dll.
The message was that this file was out of date, and may cause serious problems. So, I googled it, and found an updated dll driver to download. I downloaded it and then ran a search for the same file on my c:\. I had several hits, but there were 2 that I needed to replace. I backed up the file, of course, and then copied and pasted that file to the system32 directory, and the nvidia director. It prompted me to replace those files, and I clicked yes.
Been running even better now. Also I downloaded the OMEGA nvidia drives and am currently running those. No longer using nvidia's version. :)
Khonn out for now

Im still having no joy with this issue.
The number of things tried is too long to list, but I do have a common thread...
AMD64 x2 3800+, NVIDIA 7800GTX, XP 32bit AMD64 x2 3800+, NVIDIA 7800GTX, XP 64bit AMD64 3500+, NVIDIA 7800GTX, XP 32bit AMD64 3500+, NVIDIA 7800GTX, XP 32bit
All exhibit same failure. Complete hardware lockup despite numerous reinstalls and driver version changes.
Centrino laptop with ATI 9700 no issue whatsoever.
Seems to me the problem is with EITHER amd64 cpu's or nvidia graphics cards or BOTH. Only evidenced in past couple of weeks, I have made NO local system changes in this period until I started troubleshooting.
Since EVE is the only app failing ("app" includes prime95, memtest and other burn in tools), Im assuming it is probably an eve client problem. I will post a solution if/when I discover one or let you know if/when the problem goes away on its own.
err! jak.

Ive had some joy.
On my AMD64 x2 3800+ system running windows XP 32bit.
I have removed 2 of the 4 memory sticks from my MSI K8N Neo4 Platinum (nforce 4 ultra) motherboard. This *seems* to have helped. I have had a crash to desktop with the message "connection to server lost" but no system lockups.
Odd. Very Odd. err! jak

Update: I upgraded my graphics card drivers (thanks Khonn for that link) and that did *k all, so I upgraded my RAM to 512 DDR and that solved everything, it all runs smoothly now, no screen freezing, no camera panning, and I haven't lost a ship since
The answer seems to be to upgrade stuff one by one, starting with the least drastic (drivers, RAM), going through to the more drastic (operating systems, graphics cards, motherboards) till the problem stops.

my 2nd box got pushed back to NVidia drivers release 56.72 from Omega(3rd party) but I don't use it for EVE anymore
my main(ATI) box has no issues other than lag, and we all have that
I find it scary that a driver thats a year and half old works better than new ones |

Edited by: Kael Brahe on 10/10/2005 00:18:28 I also experience a similar problem, I run a AMD Athlon 64 3000+ on an Asus K8V Deluxe motherboard and use a Nvidia GeForce 5700 LE 256 MB video card. It's not lag issue or anything, everything's essentially nice and smooth. But every so often (anywhere from 10 seconds to never) the entire computer would shut down and reboot with not prior warnings, just as if I had reached over and pressed the hardware restart button. It's happened at every point in the game, while docked, with many interfaces open, with one interface open, in space... you name it. It's even done the reboot thingy at the log-in screen. The few times that I've managed to get the computer to spit out a Blue Screen of Death instead of just rebooting, it claims that something went wrong with a Nvidia component (the graphics card, clearly). There's times when I can have 4-hour-long sessions without a single incident, then there's those times when it reboots within 1 minute of starting EVE six times in a row... I'm currently running Video BIOS version 4.36.20.30.01 and ForceWare version 78.01.

Well I'm on the 14day trail, or should I now say 12 day trial... I've played Eve before for about a year, but got bored and left. I got tempted to give it another shot but though it would be wise to try and take a trial before commiting any money as Pay by Cash is so damn expensive. Anyway...
The last time I played Eve was about 2 months+ ago and Eve ran fine on my then brand new setup. Athlon 64 Venice 3200+ NForce 3 ultra mobo, GF 6800GT. But after coming back with the only thing changed being I now have 2gigs of RAM and Eve of course going up a version or so. Eve now crashes, usually after about a minute and does a hard lock resulting in a complete freeze and I have to reboot my machine. I've upgraded to the latest drivers and everything is up to date, tried different compatability modes etc... ensured AA and AF is disabled, tried windowed/fullscreen, tried reinstalling Eve etc... and all other games work fine. I'm certaintly glad I opted for the trial first, but even so its dissapointing.

I am having the same problems.
Upgraded from a GEForce Ti4200 AGP 8 X to a GEForce GT6600 AGP 8 X, and now Eve Locks up on me all the time
78.01_winxp2k_international_whql.exe being used for both, unintsall and reinstal each time.
I was informed that maybe my PSU wasnt up to the job, so I upgraded to a 450 Watt, - the problem has NOT gone away
I've uninstalled and put back the Ti4200, and it works fine again, so what gives - a supposedly superior gfx card cant handle EvE?
My system is an XP2600, running 768 Megs of DDR Ram.
Please someone help, I feel like I have wasted a hundred pounds sterling and a good few hours.

I had the reboot problems twice. Both times it happened only in EVE.
Fix 1: (Somewhere before shiva arrived) I replaced inexpensive RAM for high quality stuff. Corsair paired RAM rocks my systems now. RAM test programs could not find any problems.
Fix 2: (Right after the cold War Patch) I replaced the 3-year-old power supply with a new one.
When I am building computers now, I wont touch cheap components unless the computer is geared for office work only. For gaming and server duty, no cheap stuff will find its way into the case. Cheap mouse and keyboard might do their jobs though. And EVE is used to test the systems

Tried running my gfx card at 4x AGP with fast writes disabled, naturally it made bugger all difference.
It works on my old celeron 1.6gig laptop with a 32mb Geforce 2 Go, well at 15fps... and I ain't gonna play it on that when I've got a comp easily capable of running it at 50fps with AA. Quite funny really, thinking I'd give Eve a try again and all the problems come flooding back! Still I expected it would be due to lag and downtime, not a buggy client

I just got Eve and installed the client... It crashes contantly after about 5 minutes of playing. I don't wanna type it all out again, so here's the letter I sent tech support:
Customer (Peter Hopkins) - 10/14/2005 03:40 PM I've just installed the latest version of the client from the website, and it doesn't seem to be working. Roughly 5 minutes after starting, the whole system locks-up. I don't get any warning messages. The symptoms are consistent with overheating, but I've checked and this definately isn't the problem.
I can't play the game long enough to create a user ID, and hence can't log onto the forums to ask for help there. However, reading one of the threads there, it seems other people with similar graphics cards are having the same problem since the Cold War patch. I am signed up with a trial account, and was really looking forward to playing the game :(
My system looks like this: AMD Athlon XP2500+ 512Mb RAM NVIDIA GeForce 6600 GT 128Mb (AGP version) Running Windows XP Pro with all updates installed
As you can see, I managed to race through character creation before it crashed to post this letter here. I've noticed that this specific problem has happened to a couple of other people. If anyone's solved this, let me know. It runs all my other games fine, and I'm not really looking to spend any more money on hardware getting the damn game to work.

Edited by: Festering on 14/10/2005 22:48:23 Yeah the Eve client is using 100% CPU and probably GPU too as both the CPU and gfx card go up to their maximum temperatures. However they are not overheating so that isn't the problem. I thought the Eve client has always done this (not really the best way of doing things) but I might be wrong, I'll try lowering the Eve thread priority and see if that helps.
I can't help but think its probably due to some 'optimisation' that has completely buggered up the client for the effected machines. Still it would be nice to have some acknowledgement the problem is going to be fixed. However I don't have much time with about 9 days remaining of my trial account in which I only just managed to create a character and kill 1 drone in a training area (after multiple restarts)

You'd think if they were working on a solution, they'd have the time to reply to this thread... It's a shame, as if I could have played the game and got a taste for it, I reckon I would have signed up. I just clinging to the (slim) hope that they'll either get it fixed in the next 7 days, or reimburse us trial guys with some more time. Like you say, SOME recognition of the problem would be nice. Oh well, I guess I'll just have to reinstall X2...

Am having the same problems, mainly eve crashing on startup, but occasionally when I have multiple windows open when playing. Have tried any number of fixes including some not mentioned above to no effect.
I will not believe that the problem lies with hardware either being faulty or poor quality as the problem is exclusive to Eve on my pc. All drivers are new, Windows is fully re-installed and updated.
The lack of response to this thread is very poor, I have been playing Eve for a while now but will not be paying any longer for something I cannot use properly. My monthly subscription expires on the 19th of this month, I will petition for more help and if not forthcoming I'm not renewing.

Well same problem here, have played EVE almost 2 years now never ever had any kind og real problems.
It CTD og locks up or reboots. Always between 10sek and 10min after logon. Even if I stay at the portrait screen !!
Tried almost everything, driver, settings (Bios,GPU,windows and eve) nothing helps. Also mine works great in all games but eve.
XP SP2 ASUS A8N-SLI Premium AMD64 3500 1GB dual ram MSI GF-7800 GTX
From what I can see here all of us (where none of the suggestions have worked) use a AMD64 and newer Geforce configuration. I also get the Microsoft send error with a problem in the NVIDIA hardware.
Really hope CCP find this problem soon

No it isn't an exaggeration, I can't even finish half of the beginning tutorial before it locks (Skipping it makes no difference either). Usually the best I can get is to fly to an acceleration gate (whilst already being near) fly to a training drone and if I'm lucky blow it up before it locks up the machine completely. If I'm really unlucky sometimes even the login screen completely freezes the computer, not just a CTD. Once I managed to run the login screen for 10 mins or so without a crash but then it locked up as soon as I went ingame. It doesn't sound like you have the same problem.
As for sound, I've got an Audigy 2 and I've tried disabling Eves sound to no effect. Onboard sound is also disabled in BIOS. I still haven't yet found a solution and I don't think I will since every other game is fine and last time I played Eve (2 months ago or so) it also worked fine.

Edited by: Rakhan kane on 25/10/2005 04:52:52 NVidia GeForce Ti 4200 here, and I seem to be having same troubles as a lot of you in this thread.
However, for me the game gets freezes or crashes only when it's drawing an Amarr space station. I can do anything anywhere else, but when I try to warp to an Amarr station, the game freezes for 15 seconds, then either keeps running, or crashes. If it keeps running, the Amarr station has corrupted graphics (most of the graphic tiles of the station are blinking). If there are more than one Amarr station (or possibly one Amarr and one of any other race) within visual distance, the game crashes every time.
When it crashes, I either get a Windows "Graphics Adapter has stopped working"-error, or the computer reboots.
How many others notice that the problem is centered around Amarr stations?
Btw, you guys should also make a bug report of this. Get your dxdiag file, get the latest crash file from the game itself, go to here and submit a bug report with those files (instructions to getting those files, and a third one, are on the above page). Complaining here can easily pass unnoticed by someone who might be able to help, but enough bug reports on one subject _will_ get noticed.

I'll jump back into this forum with my own personal experiences.
I've now had the locked up screen problem for about 3 months, and man, it's starting to wazz me off. I've now lost about 11 ships from frigates to a scorpion over it, (including a Covetor).
Naturally, at the loss of a scorpion, i've petitioned to have it back, but they are giving me surprising hassle over this.
So far, we've tried:
Checking internet connection Downgrading drivers (which incidently foobared my entire visual identity on windows ) Upgraded soundcard drivers
After all that, the [GM] decided that it wasn't a problem, and I should run the logsever utility...one slight hitch in that;
How do i save the results if the computer freezes and i need to manually switch off the PC and start again?
The [GM]'s response to this was to check my temperature readouts, (which i'd done along time ago, when i thought it WAS temperature related).
I can understand the [GM]'s responses, after all, it could be a million and one things, but I find it strange to be just my computer, when there are quite a few people here, all saying the same as me.
Naturally, I submitted this forum thread link along with my 1st petition, but I don't think they have even bothered to read it
I am in no way complaining at the [GM]'s, they are keeping in touch with me everyday, and trying to solve the problem, but to be perfectly honest, i don't think they will be able to, as more and more people in the EVE universe are going down with this exact problem, but it's rare to them, so they don't bother reporting the problem.
P.S No word on re-imbursement of the scorpion either
I'll keep you posted as more information comes in

I've lost too many ships to count now and having played Eve since beta without any real problems I'm now becoming tired of it all tbh.
So in war, the way is to avoid what is strong and to strike at what is weak. |

Hey guys,
I am very inpatient so I wrote a new topic before I found this one, but I had the same problem, with nVidia graphic cards. Here's what I did to fix it (copied from the thread "EVE freezes my computer (have to reboot) - SOLVED!"):
Hmm, I tried this and so far so good, I've been playing a few good hours and no freeze:
In EVE\cache\prefs.ini add the line advancedDevice=1
Start your game, press Escape, then in the Graphics tab, chose "Present Interval: Interval One". You might also want to go to Generic tab and uncheck "Load station environment", because after I did the first change, I still managed to freeze when I was undocking.
If I remember right, the "Interval One" option means "Wait for Vertical Sync" and slows down your display - so you'll lose a bit of FPS (about 8-10 in my case) but you will be able to play smoothly. (You can search these forums for the words prefs.ini and advancedDevice for more info on what you can fiddle with in there.)
Hope this helps others as well.
If it fixes your problem, send 1 ISK to my name with the reason "Game no longer freezes" :) I usually post something on the forums and forget to check it again, but that will probably get my attention.

Edited by: Tyler''Durdenskji on 07/11/2005 03:24:37 Well..as usual, I'm back
but with the same old news as usual: CCP still refuse to accept this as an issue.
I've reformatted my computer, brand new Windows XP and everything, the PC runs like a dream!, except till I got to EVE, then all hell broke loose, but, that was to be expected huh?
19 reboots in 2 hours, yes NINETEEN!
But, after all the farting about the GM's did in the first place, my EVE wouldn't even stay connected for more than 10 minutes, but again, that wasn't thier problem, but i'm glad to report now, that after the reformat, that problem has been solved, so now I can goto the bathroom without coming back to a crashed EVE.
I've repetitioned my old petition now, it's been escalated to the senior GMs and I've sent them back a very harsh (but saying i'm not mad with them, they try thier best) response.
I've simply asked, if they have looked at this thread, and if so, why have they not commented on it? They are starting to annoy me with thier "Russian" idea of support, ie. Sticking thier heads in the sand till the problem goes away. Well guess what?, this british problem isn't going away!, you made it out to be me, and my PC that was the problem, try again, and now I have the fresh installation to prove it.
All I want is a response all you GM's out there, let us know you've read this! Don't always have to produce a solution at this exact second, but an acknowledgement would be fine.
I'll stop now before i really get started
/end Rant
//edit//
Oh yeah, I'll check out the suggestion from Donna Darko, if it works, i'll transfer more than 1 isk, and recommend Donna for ultimate [GM] as well as all the other people who suggested something, at least they are actively trying!

Same prob! EVE boots me out randomly and somtimes my comp just turns itself off for no apparent reason. When I turn it back on again I dont even get an error repot or anything and this has only ever happened whilst playing EVE.
The realy worrying thing is that it seems to be getting worse...

I noticed a line in the description of the drivers:
"Added support for VSync on Direct3D games when running NVIDIA SLI."
Just thinking that this could be the magic line, as previous attempts at fixing this have mainly all been centered around the V Sync thingymajigity
Thanks for the link, installing the new drivers now :)
P.S - Still no word on my petition at which I shouted at the [GM]'s for lack of support, 4 days and counting, seems they don't want to answer me back

Ok, so I replied in another topic with the same info. This time however, I went with the fps tweaks instead of the driver/bios/reboot 30X circus. (which is getting old)
Most importantly to me is the fact that im running a lower end system - and as of the 3 hour patch that happened last night, the game has become unplayable as you all have described. Previously - even after cold war patch, I could play with all settings on max - both in game and on my system. I could also watch a video and listen to itunes at the same time! I would of course get some FPS hits if I was flipping between browser windows and changing playlists. Hell, I could even run a torrent!
Then, last night - completely unplayable. My first thought was that I burned something out. But, checking my temps via a DigiDoc5 in my H20 system - all temps were around 15 degrees above ambient (perfectly normal). This must be fixed soon - this isnt just a driver related issue, there are too many different systems that are affected in the same way.
My system (stock numbers below are from Sandra - mostly overclocked otherwise), I have been playing at max quality and never crashed or lost significant framerates (without any fps tweaks) - id say its a good example of how bad this last patch was. Not to mention, I lost my SATA drive connectivity at the exact same time... I hope to god this is just a coincidence - my "raid" disk had all my backups and I cant get it back on line. Never heard of game messing with hard disk arrays. Anyone else have any crazy coincidences?

I have been following the threads on crashing and such for a while and would like to see if I can offer a bit of help to those having issues. I have noticed alot of people who have checked their temperatures while playing and posted them saying they are running high fifties to high sixties (celcius of course) and they seem to think this is ok. While you are not going to burn your hardware at these temperatures, hardware DOES begin to get unstable under heavy load when the temperature gets above about 55. Keep in mind that most high end graphics cards that are running stock heatsinks will get above the 55 mark under a heavy load, so this is one problem to consider for all you guys running the high end geforce cards, check to see they arent overheating. This problem is not related specifically to geforce cards, it seems to be a combination of amd64 proc boxes and/or geforce cards. I have a contact ive been working with to resolve his issues who is running an amd64 3500+ and an ati x850 xt, so it is not geforce specific. Obviously make sure all drivers are up to date (video, sound, chipset, all hardware bios) but also, for all of you running multiple sound cards, say one onboard and one modular, make sure you have drivers installed for both even if you do not use the onboard, because missing drivers can sometimes cause underlying problems in windows which will cause issues like this. Antivirus, and spyware are also obvious quick fixes to make sure you are clear of. Once all this is out of the way it gets a bit more complicated.
Many of the problems I have seen with this were solvable when investigating power fluxuations with hardware. Using some electronics tools (volt meters and such) I was able to trace down specific hardware devices in some of the computers we have had problems with that were having power surges due to underpowering during 100% load. Most of these computers were using lower end motherboards and/or power supplies. But as opposed to replacing these components, we were able to solve the problem in the bios. By increasing the voltage to the components a little bit at a time (just like overclocking, as not to burn the components) until the system becomes unstable, then reset the cmos and set it at the highest stable setting. This solved the problems on 9 out of 10 of the systems, which leads me to believe that the problem lies with unstable system setups due to either inexperienced home built computers, or unstable hardware (this was the case with several prebuilt computers, hewlett packard and compaq to be specific). When this failed to work on one of our test machines I started looking further into this problem. Windows does not recognize 64 bit processors as 64 bit, but rather as 32 bit (this is due to the processors compatibility emulator for operating systems that do not support 64 bit. I started looking more thoroughly into this and if you do some google searching you will be able to find an amd64 driver that was released by amd for amd64 processors. This was what fixed our one bogus problem computer. For those of you running sli I would recommend nvidias beta drivers, as they have better vsync support. Also disable nview as it has caused problems with games in the past. For ati users, stick with the catalyst control panel as opposed to the control center. Control center is to unstable to be accurate and is designed more to be pretty and user friendly. Also do not force vsync, set it to application preference. The only thing you should be forcing in eve is antiailasing, and only if your hardware has the horsepower to run it smoothly.
Hope this helps, I have had my system stable with absolutely no problems in any game or software since building it, just takes some tweaking and time. Good luck ;)

Ok, I so after having jumped through all the hoops of making sure software and drivers were not the problem - b/c they worked previously before the patch, and continue to run perfectly with games that demand more system resources than eve does. The problem with eve seems to be extremely hardware specific. I run a relatively low end system, but since im a geek and built my own system to be "bullet proof", this "low-end" computer crunches what hp and dell put out as high end. So - isolating the issue further as temps have been ruled out (note my post above) I use a water cooled system with water blocks on my proc, north bridge, and gpu. I monitor the temps externally via digidoc and show no problems with overheating.
In another post, I mentioned that I found a temporary fix by simply changing my ram timings in the bios. Yes, this is all it took to fix it. I set my system back to exactly the same as it was pre-fubar-patch-o-death, and changed the ram timing. WTF is all I have to say about a game that requires bios adjustments to get past the login screen... Ive used this system to beta test horribly written games that would run circles around what we are dealing with now.

We solved the crashing issue on the one bogus computer that was having issues. It actually makes me feel quite dumb for not noticing the problem, and this doesnt apply to most people as not many people are running water cooling. But it turns out that the cpu block had a hairline ***** in it that was causing it to drip once every couple of hours on the video card, and the video card lost a capacitor due to this. I know this probably doesnt help most of you, but those of you with high end systems, check all your lines ;).

I had it prior to a Geforce 4400 upgrade to a Geforce 6600GT. After the upgrade I still had it, which prompted me to preform a format and reinstall of Windows XP.... That has not helped =(

I also tried older drivers, beta drivers (for my sound and graphics card), I disabled HT at my bios, I killed all other tasks which are not used from Win XP or Eve.
I still get lag in warp, docking and gate jumping actions. and the most time in fighting action :(
And now I had a lag and a crash at the moment I wanna dock and now I canŠt play cause I stuck in the loading screan to enter the station.

Hey, I'm new to this game and had the same problem as you guys... I couldnt even get past the character selection screen without my comp totally freezing... I have solved it by , this will hurt..., downclocking my vid card. Somehow the game asked to much of my nvidia 6600 GT apparantly. The lower clockrates are not so bad as it seems since the card is good enough anyways to not have any framerate issues. If you dont know how to regulate your vid card clock settings, search for a program called "coolbits" (for nvidia cards that is). I know this is a far from ideal solution but it worked for me, game didnt crash at all since I downclocked and better a slightly slower game then no game =)

there seems to be several different problems going on in this thread, which all probably have different solutions.
i will explain my problems with rmr in a hope that it may help someone else.
i have a xp2600, 1g ram, nvidia fx5900zt 128m, via chipset/agp, sound blaster live sound card.
i run folding under most programs and keep an eye on processor usage through its log. no problems with other graphics intensive games etc.
i found rmr was dropping me to the desktop very frequently after i installed it. cold war did not show this problem. i had a look at what rmr was doing and found a memory leak. small but enough to cause problems. what i also found was that the folding logs were showing no activity other than file storage. this means that eve never allowed folding to have processor time, which it had done pre rmr.
i then windowed eve and looked at folding and memory. folding WAS getting processor time at the start of warping and sometimes sitting in station. the empty logs though show another process taking that time, not the folding engine. no other services were taking that time.
i estimate an increase in processor usage of around 30% and there is a memory hole that causes the usage of higher memory that normally doesnt get used at all. my guess is an increase in memory usage of 30% or so too. now the video cards are being used so much more with frame rates going down another 30% which i believe could be resolved easily. it seems to be linked with the memory and lag issues for some STUPID reason. hehe, maybe we have only 60% of the game installed!
and this is where the problems seem to come from. power, ram, video cards going mad because of overuse etc. now having said that, i dont have a problem with the power supply or ram (both replaced). i solved my problem by removing 1 stick of ram and left it at 512m, now i just have to close the client and startup again whenever i see it running off the hard drive, and that isnt too often.
of course all this without a mention of server side problems, which must be absolutely killing the new ram drive!, i mean those things wouldnt give you the lovely audible "hard drives are out of control" warning!, no, they will just BAKE to death.
hmm i picture an extra air con sitting next to the drive, hehe
i ask only one question-
why does it take so long to stack a group of selected items?
NOT client, NOT player numbers, what the hell is a ram drive doing for so long?
this may be part of the answer- it took longer to stack groups in cold war inside a ships cargo hold, than it does in rmr. in rmr it takes long to stack items in stations.??

I have a Asus motherboard and it comes with a utility that monitors the motherboard for voltage and temp. I am sure there are some generic ones out there.
My 3.3v will drop below 10% down to 2.9ish volts. This causes problems. I have turned down the graphics and switched from 8x to 4x hoping to reduce the power the card is drawing. My PS is a cheap one but its rated at 550w and is less than 6 months old.
Let me go fool with the bios some more.

Hi all
I have been reading all of this problem with many people giving great ideas on how to fix it. But it seems that everyone has ignored the simple fact that this problem has ocurred after the RMR patch. Like many others I was playing for a while before the new patch and never had any real problems. After the patch it is a different matter though. I have to admit I am not computer literate and I am struggling to understand why the excellent system I have (which I have been told by a friend in the know ) is now struggling so much with the game.

Same problems for me, though it mostly happens when I eneter a battle, it will still happen on occasion when I am just in space but happens alot more often when I enter a battle. Did a fresh OS install last night, went into a mission afterwards and my PC rebooted 4 times in 10 minutes.
I have a Zalaman 120mm fan on my cpu with arctic silver thermal paste to get the heat away from processor. So heats not the issue. With the OS reinstall, thats not the issue. Have only eve installed on the freshly installed OS, dont even have a virus scanner running( no worries, protected by a linux based firewall ) so other programs aren't interferring.
This started happening and progressivly getting worse since RMR. That right there, is one common thread in all of this. Think someone else stated AMD64's were another common thread.
My system setup is: AMD64 3700+ on a SOYO K8USA mb 1 gig corsair ram ATI All-In-Wonder 9800 with drivers dated 12/11/2005 DX 9.0C SATA C-Media AC97 Audio

I just started playing Eve this week and I love the game. However its been a shaky start. I first experienced CTD/Reboot problems everytime I went to fight. I found out that it was related to my on-board sound, so I went out and bought a new SC...fixed my problem.
Unfortunately, I am now getting a Freeze/BSOD/Reboot problem that seems to be happening at random while I mine.
Anyway, just adding my problems to the collective.

The following info on how to clean out cache was submitted by someone else and unfortunately I cannot find the link.. Anyway the following is how to do it. My apologies to the author....
Quote First go to the "C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\Browser\Img" folder. Delete all the stuff "in" the img folder. (not the folder)
Same deal with:
C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\Pictures\Blueprints C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\Pictures\Gids C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\Pictures\Planets C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\Pictures\Portraits C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\Temp\Mapbrowser
Also clean out these folders:
C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\capture\Chatlogs C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\capture\Gamelogs
And I normally trash the stuff in this folder too:
C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\logs
I never have any problems with the game after that and it runs smoother. I run three clients from one PC, sometimes four so I like stuff clean.
Okay with that said...
DO NOT TOUCH THIS FOLDER! C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\Settings
DO NOT DELETE THIS FILE! C:\Program Files\CCP\EVE\cache\prefs.ini
Unquote Fixed things for me. I would also recommend running checkdisk after doing all this.. cheers........

Finnaly! I solved it (for me). After trying everything in all the treads, i found the problem. A file (or something) called vsdatant.sys caused the reboots, wich in turn was caused by ZoneAlarm. The funny thing about this is that ZoneAlarm and EVE worked perfectly fine on my old computer, but not my new one. So if your computer is rebooting EVE, uninstall ZoneAlarm and get another FireWall.
