Edited by: Virtuozzo on 02/09/2005 14:18:50 Brilliant, I have to say. IF only I could get it to work :/
Having followed the instructions I'm a bit at loss here, I did a test with the stream encoding properly, no errors showing, but when trying to view the stream I find it neither shows up on evelocal.com nor am i able to connect to it when trying to view it directly over the network. Maybe I am missing something? Announce broadcast?

You used the script file and pressed start encode and it never showed up nor get any error?
No error when loading the script?

Edited by: Virtuozzo on 02/09/2005 16:44:25 Indeed. No errors whatsoever. I went over the encoder logs in detail but all was fine. Bit odd.
Is it possible I did not use that blackout app correctly? I just used it to create a new window area for which to capture/encode from but I had to close it as the Eve client kept stuck beneath that app window (yes, I have the idea that when it comes to this blackout I'm a bit blonde).

Hm, I could use a bit of help on using the blackout tool :/ The stream is working now, thanks for that fix :-) But it seems to be capturing all my monitors ^^

Dunno if you can specify a single monitor or not. Another user asked the same thing but I have no clue since I do not have dual myself.
But check the settings on "Source" and configure the "Screen Capture" modules, maybe you can get it working properly there.

Right:
In the encoder application, show the session properties, from there on you can configure the source. By default for the script you will see "screen capture" fpr the video source, but you can also configure that to select an application to capture. That does it, if you have multiple monitors and just want to record Eve. You will have to save the script though.

Yup, read up :-) Figured it out. Atm trying to also specify an audio source so TS can go out along with it.
Best damn tool to show people who are not at your place what is so attractive about eve.
I can see folks going to ask you for protected feeds though :P Making them the best spy feeds ISK can buy. Unsettling.

Good :-) Folks might even cough up ISK for it :P Though it would be better anyway to just give folks the means to protect their feed and just have fun with the ones that forget.
Question ... how is this on your bandwidth?

Good idea, it got me thinking.
A player could "toggle on" some option which allows a live video feed WITHOUT ship controls, modules, or overview (so they do not give away their setups or give away ship types to the enemy), you could go to the Eve Online site and select from a list of players with this option enabled (perhaps a screenshot next to their names so you can pick the ones NOT docked) and watch things live.
By taking the Eve client out of the job of streaming the video, you would not need to worry about the client lagging. Let CCP generate the graphics on their end and stream them.

Feature Requests:
- considering that the size of the encoded stream is relatively small, it would be nice to see the script so that there was an option to also save a copy to eve-files.com on authentification. - it would be lovely to see options for optimising the stream more to make it more fluid for folks with less bandwidth available (it is probably possible but beyond me atm) - stream protection, very needed indeed and should be switched on by default. Maybe it is possible to script a password in? Maybe there's room for it on the site.
Comments: - hiding modules & such btw is already possible via the HUD. - the Blackout app can be used to hide sensitive areas from view (and thus encoding) (it would be so nice though if it were possible for the Blackout app to only work for the encoder and still have it semi transparent for the user himself so he sees what is in local while travelling :P) - multi monitor and multi client support is possible with this. Multi monitor is a matter of configuration. Multi clients however will eat your cpu and bandwidth depending on your pc configuration.
All in all I have to say I bloody love this. THANKS! This will be such a great tool during events, or even when doing N00b invasion tours :-)

No problem bandwidth wise for me, I have plenty of it so it should be alright.
I doubt that CCP will implement this on the live server...
I can easily have my media server save the streams to eve-files (actually I did but turned it off today).
Wonder if CCP pays in isk or cash ;) And of course I play, you haven't seen me zoom around the carebareish way? haha
It's not laggy, it takes a screenshot every 5 sec instead of full-time stream.

have read this idea at top of thread, not read the rest yet, so i might be shooting wildly here and missing the point,
but isn't a shot of the desktop every few seconds a little dodgy? I mean, what happens if someone had.... explicit material... on their second monitor? would that also be uploaded? hehe

Hmmz, you still use the script file on the site? Not sure what that error means, maybe some connectivity issues.

It could show yes, you can restrict it to show only what you want though but by default it shows everything so use with caution until you got it working properly.

As some of you may have seen, i have been experimenting :)
I've been using a game of poker to reduce cpu load while i find some decent settings.
By default the script seems to generate a playback of 0.2 FPS, which frankly is a joke. You can alter this tho, by configuring destination.
Perhaps some posts on ideal setups for different connection types might help everyone?
Remember not to let your encoding bitrate exceed your upload.
You can also confine video source to a specific window, Eve's for example. Keep experimenting, i'm gonna post again soon with an optimal setup for UK ADSL (256kbit upload).
Great idea this Chribba, just not sure the technology in end users homes is good enough tho....
PS I know my poker play has been crap, i been focussing on the encoder :p

I uploaded earlier the script containing the settings I use to eve-files.com (where else ^^) and indeed, there is a lot of tweaking possible.
If time permits I'll try to figure out one or two more profiles for bandwidth types. Might make it easier for folks to get a quickstart. In the mean time I got podded again :P

Chribba > any way to set a custom delay to start streaming? say a minute or so (or whatever is defined - client is encoding but server is receiving but only sends it out after a set period of time) so folks who get shot while this tool is running can see the stream with their time & method of death once they wake up at a cloning station?

I've seen a thing called an IP camera on digidave.co.uk - something like that anyway.
If someone pointed one of these things at their screen and plugged it in, anyone in the world anywhere could see his desktop by opening up a browser and entering the Camera's IP address
I think you can set the things to automatically refresh every once in a while. I dunno, i just saw it in passing and thought of it wen i saw this thread.

Ugh sorry to say Chribba, but your connection seems too poor for this. Apologies if ive made a noob mistake, but u dont even seem to be able to maintain a *1* fps stream @ 100kbits quality (constant buffering).
If i'm wrong, or misunderstanding something, plz point me in right direction :) My cpu load during encoding is about 10%, and im using a fraction of my upload on a good quality connection.
I want to persevere with this great idea, but I'm stuck with a problem i can't solve now...

spleef > it also depends on your connection, uploading the stream and watching it is bandwidth (downloading that **** in the backgroud obviously also costs bandwidth :)
Serious again, try with the script I uploaded to eve-files.com: right click and save as, then renamed to wme and modify to carry your name instead of mine.
