I'm down with anything that lets players interact with the world. Anything that brings players together who normally wouldn't have known the other existed is good. I don't think new PvE content should just bring players together in an adversarial context, though. It should also allow people to encounter each other as allies (and, of course, allow for betrayal in said context). There's nothing springboarding noobs without connections into the social world of EVE. Having something that turns the lore of EVE from a painted backdrop into a way to interact with young and old players is good. It would certainly be better for new players than grinding L1 missions alone. The adventurous noobs will go out and adventure regardless, the connected noobs will use their connections regardless, but the solo noob looking for friends and guidance has next to nothing in-game at their disposal. Noobchat and NPC corp chat are occasionally helpful, but more often than not it's just a headache. The corporation recruitment tool is impenetrable if you're brand new to the game and barely understand the terminology it's throwing around.
If done right, this feature could hit a lot of different player wishes -- more content and reason to interact for the hiseccers, more/better rewards in various parts of space, and an easy transition from the NPE epic arc to something that will bring them in contact with other players. |

I think the insanity of the ramblings from several of the detractors of these ideas is clear, so I won't address it beyond this mocking statement.
There are some really great ideas in this thread, and I would love to have a Dev post about this to see if CCP is even considering this kind of content, or if we're all just sharing a wonderful pipe dream.
More NPC activity alone would be great, but what I think many of us are really thinking of is having more complex NPC activity. I don't just want convoys and patrols that fly the same rout infinitely. I want patrols to be dispatched to areas where violence has recently increased, convoys moving between production and distribution systems, diplomatic missions between sovereign empires, exploration and survey ships going out into the furthest reaches of nullsec.
I want the Empires to react to capsuleer alliances in a meaningful way (because lets face it, we should scare them). Nullsec alliances to be able to hire NPC mercenaries to patrol their borders or harass their enemies. I want to be able to actually become friendly with the pirate factions and have that mean something. I want the Jovians to be a part of the game again. I want to see some of the smaller factions like Mordu's Legion become a bigger part of the universe. I want my interactions with NPC factions to be more meaningful, at least in the context of interactions with other NPCs. |

I do think that bringing more life to the NPC factions would be a good thing, as it can support player created roleplay content as well as give a stronger first impression of the game to new players who haven't become exposed to or engaged with EVE's meta game yet. Plus there will always be players who like to play the game 'solo' at least some of the time.
At those times when you don't see much player activity going on, the game world can appear lifeless. More visible and interesting NPC interactions could deepen the feel of the game, although obviously player interaction will and always should take precedence. http://uglebsjournal.wordpress.com/

Good idea.
I have my own addition that I think fits in here: tie this NPC activity to player activity. The more missioning, ratting, trading, mining etc that players do in an area, the more NPC forces are drawn there. Even add NPC corp security forces to stations, so high-activity stations become safer to operate out of. This would be a great opportunity to improve the highsec>lowsec transition, and it involves players themselves in the world shaping. - Mission Overhaul - Bridging the PVP / PVE Gap - -áIf the game stops teaching people to fear lowsec, maybe people will start going there? |

Personally, I feel that CCP is going for the 'big, empty universe' feeling.
Too damn short lived, but yeah the NPCs in that game were a lot of fun. Damn I miss chainguns that shot lightning and rocket launchers lobbing giant snowballs.

First and probably only post, but this thread deserves it. so +1
I approve of everything this thread is about. I would love to see NPC miners for example. Ore has to get it's mess some how right? They could be out at standard belts. NPC pirates could spawn specifically with heavier equipment to "gank" the NPC miners. What if the miners could call out in local for help? What if saving a miner could lead to a escalation? (What if we could actually have the game be true to the "chaos theory" trailer?) What if we could make the game function like there are actually other beings in the game that function aside from the Capsuleers? I mean come on, you see transport ships undocking from stations all the time...what are they doing? Put some realistic, unorganized, real time content into the game to make it live and breathe.
Why can't we also have factional warfare? I mean REAL warfare. Like the Caldari vs. Gallente event; but correctly (Amarr surely would have warped in to assist the caldari and to burn the Gallente. maybe not a big force but something.) I want to see a wormhole from gallente space open up and have a Gallente incursion in the Domain region or something. The basis for it is already there with the launch of the incursions, just change the factions around. Make the game dynamic. It's been sitting static and stale for 10 years. Kick it up a notch already. Forget prettier warp animations and camo ships that are exact copies of what you just nerfed. Give us PLAYABLE, rewarding, immersive content that will benefit everyone; not just the PvP-ers or the care bears. Not just for one sec status or another. Not just for fully organized corporations/alliances. everyone... |

some of OPs ideas are good, others not so much. for example, I would strongly agree that disregarding capsuleers, EVE is extremely underpopulated. where are the trading vessels in low and null? it can't be THAT dangerous as to completely deter trade unless you are immortal...?
on the other hand, this is a very hot iron to forge. last year, the goons demonstrated very explicitly how changes to the sandbox can disrupt the EVE economy. if the newly introduced NPCs are supposed to be worth shooting at, you also want to ensure that they cannot be exploited (aside from the usual bug testing of course). i can already see 23/7 mock mining ops with an escort of tach oracles raking in billions in rat spawn bounties without having to move an inch.

One of the keys, in my opinion, when adding more NPC activity to EVE, would be to make them very new types of NPCs. NPC convoys shouldn't just be hauler spawns that move around, and in fact, most of them should probably not be worth attacking for a capsuleer, because of their low reward and hi security and standing hit with that empire. Killing them for fun should also carry repercussions, which would be more possible to implement if there were more Faction Navy and DED NPCs in the game, etc. |

Ankari Lytaken wrote:I like this idea. Especially in lowsec. There's millions of rats floating about but never any concord or navy in sight, even though it is part of the empire. And yet, the empires somehow lay claim to these systems (in non-FW systems, anyway). The only presence you see are the stations.
It would be interesting if criminal aggression in lowsec would provoke a single delayed (maybea minute or two) Navy response. Something along the lines of a typical battlecruiser. This would give PvE fit ships a "fighting chance" against a single other opponent if they can last long enough, but not so strong or instant as to inhibit solo piracy if you're quick about it.
I see it working something like this:
1. Chribba is minding his own business in lowsec, maybe farming those new clone security tags. 2. The Mittani, evil, vile villain that he is, spies Chribba in a belt and attacks. 3. Chribba invokes the power of the Holy Veldspar and works on surviving, turning his mining lasers onto The Mittani's hull. 4. After a minute or two, some Navy police ships appear and start to fire on The Mittani because he's been bad. 5. Either the combined damage (Chribba + NPCs) is enough to drive The Mittani away, or Chribba explodes and Mittens upholds his devious reputation.
The thing that worries me here is that the Navy wouldn't be a big deterrent for a prepared fleet of ships. They just pop it, or rotate tackle, while the target dies. Something like this could hurt the time honored tradition of Solo PvP, something I hold near and dear to my heart.
Maybe this idea should scale with the number of ships attacking the target. If a grid has 1 or 2 criminals, nothing happens; but if there's 3 or more people aggressing a target, a scaled response is eventually launched. After all, the empires only have so many resources. Are you going to spend them on one person or would you go for the bigger threat of five or six?
The response may also scale with the security status of the person being attacked. The Navy may be much more interested in helping a 5.0+ security status pilot - someone who obviously follows the laws of space and works toward the benefit of society. If you're in that -2 to 0 range, or lower, they might not respond at all.
Perhaps the Navy will only respond if the attackers are in that glorious -5 to -10 range that all true pirates should aspire to achieve. This makes security status important across lowsec (instead of just "flashy" and "non flashy" being the only important difference, since flashy can be aggressed on agate without consequence) and may increase the demand for the new Tags For Sec program.
I would like to propose that the Navy ships drop tags which could be turned in to pirate faction agents for standings. After all, not only are you a Bad Dude, but you're fighting off the police as well. That's impressive. Unfortunately it would be too easy to farm tags in this manner with an alt. CCP Sreegs is my favorite developer. |

I support the op, I love the idea, but I'm sorry to say that you can survive from doing pure pvp. Your game becomes hampered pretty hard when you start worrying about sec status, but there are no requirements or need from day one to do anything but shoot other players. Especially when you consider market pvp.
On the other hand ... surviving off of pure pvp is NOT easy. If you're driven to threaten others with harm or violence because of what they do in game, you can't separate fantasy from reality.-á That 'griefer/thief' is probably more sane than you are.-á How screwed up is that? |
