Would you leave EVE for the Elite MMORPG that is coming in 2006?
I liked the idea of Elite but EVE is better to me in story and what it is in game play.
So I would stay with EVE.
But it would seem to me that Elite Online will be trying to go off the coat tales of Elite but might actually copy EVE.
The Story in EVE is awesome and I hope Elite Online will not kill EVE or even shorten its life span.
They would have to copy EVE to come close to the no grind ways of EVE like not having to do something over and over in the game to get better XP/Stats for your character.

Basing an MMORPG on something good does not usually make it good, often the other way around.
The quality of an MMORPG is based on the ideas behind it and the developers who make it. And from what I've seen so far, I generally can rightfully assume that everything new that comes out is crap until I see otherwise. -- Proud member of the [23].

Very hard to say tbh, elite is actually the reason I came to love space games and hence eve.
Is going to be a tough call either way for me.

If we're talking Elite 4, last I heard it's single player and possibly non-massively multiplayer.

I know, that's why it is I funny thing, EVE was made in part because of good Elite memories. But now Elite is coming out?
Either way I like EVE and look at it as a different game and will keep playing, basides a new mmorpg is going to take years to catch up to EVE and never will unless they get rid of any XP grind like EVE did.

Well if it was an MMORPG is what I'm asking but some do say it IS going to be an MMORPG though. Either way there are other MMORPG space games coming out to like X Beyond the Frontier Online.

I will at least check elite online. Elite was TEH game for sci-fi fans 20 years ago and i would love to see the "krait" and "Thargoids" again. But in the end i will play the game that offers more PVP-fun. If Elite-online will offer more PVP-fun then i guess EVE will loose a lot of PVP-players to the ELITE remake.
And one thing is sure: EVE is an ELITE copy, not ELITE a copy of EVE. But CCP first had to balls, brain, $ and were first willing to make a really good online-sci-fi-multiplayergame. CCP made their own story (wich is ok). EVE still looks like an ELITE copy, though.
It¦s like comparing Jules Verne to George Lucas. Jules Verne was the first. But Goerge Lucas made it perfect.

It's taken Eve along time and alot of work to get where it is today, I don't think these newer games will be tempting me away very quickly.

last time I checked on the Frontier website, it stated that the plan was to release a single player version first, then an online multiplayer (which could possibly be massive, but not necessarily) afterwards.
I still have reservations about it, as nothing could in any way compare to the nostalgia and sheer factor generated by the original. It'll certainly be worth looking at, as Braben's now got some serious programming resources under his belt... I just fear that without Bell's input (which will probably never happen), it'll be "just another space game"

Elite was good. Frontier: Elite was Ok. Later stuff wasn't so hot.
I joined EVE, primarily because of 'good memories' of playing Elite. Now I'm here, I don't think I'd leave - whilst there's similiarities, there's also differences, and the differences I like. (Modular ship configs, pointy clicky navigation, real time skill training etc.)
That's not to say I wouldn't check it out, but that'll be when (if) I run out of enthusiasm with EVE. Which as far as I can tell is still quite a way off :) Investment Opportunity:

Well you know what eve is all about ..but i doubt anybody here knows what elite online will be like.
So im guessing you should stick with eve unless its proven 200% that elite online is better ^_^.
Doubtfull though considering eve has already made for itself a richer "history" ..and with that i mean the way players go about their business and such and ofcourse all the neat lil stories etcetc.

I signed up to EVE because I loved Elite and Frontier.
However I think they have missed the boat now and won't be able to offer anything diffrent to what we have now. EVE is everything Elite was and more!

Seen the track record and extrapolating on that ... I estimate Elite IV will hit the shelves in 2020
Anyway, who nows what EvE will look like in 2006, perhaps the question should be asked then
I liked playing Elite very much, but got frustrated with the changes in Elite 2, the realistic physics did somewhat take the fun out of the game.
EvE is for me the game at present that comes closest to the original "Elite experience" and I'm not going to switch that easily no matter what David Braben claims. |

I can see myself getting a bit inactive to play some other MMo like auto assault but i will never leave eve. I left twice now and allways had to start out again because i found out that eve is the end of all. Other MMO's can be nice for a whilebut so far nothing can come close to EvE and i think it will stay like that for a while.

I'm not sure what Elite Online could offer that Eve already offers us - except of course the ability to land on planets, moons, and asteroids. But hopefully we'll have that in Eve in a year or two.
What Elite did have though was a better sense of adventure in regards to exploration than Eve currently offers. At the moment there's not much difference in each system of the Eve galaxy. Seen one seen them all. The systems in the Elite (Frontier) galaxy seemed to each have more character about them and there was always something different to explore.
And watching Saturn set below the horizon whilst sat on the surface of one of its moons was simply awe-inspiring!

Nah, while both games share many similarities, especially the obvious ones, they are still quite different imho.
For example, one could work for one of the militaries and gradually gain ranks. Ok, you might compare this to EVE's agent system but that's really about the rewards and not so much about the standings or fictional rank. This military career in particularly could be very addictive and satisfying, I remember doing missions for months, not because of the rewards it got me but because of the sheer satisfaction when all the hard work paid off in a promotion of rank
Then there's the ultra-realistic physics in Elite (apart for a few bugs) and ofcourse the direct control of one's spaceship. Ok, jumping would take (ingame) days in Elite as would reaching a station, but in multiplayer this issue of time could be resolved by adding uber-inertia abilities to ships that attempt to 'warp'. That way you'd have realistic space physics while in normal flight but when trying to travel a certain distance your ship would get a huge inertia boost, which would in fact make sense in some way if you think in warp-bubble terms... Ok, not so realistic anymore but at least closer to Elite's physics.
On a sidenote, I wish they would remove the jumpgates one day and introduce some form of hyper-warp that lets you warp from one system to the other without the discontinuation you suffer at each gate. This would add greatly to the feeling of vastness of space and would remove the 'instance'-feeling you sometimes get when you're jumping from, for example, a system with lots of blue blackground to it's neighbour system which suddenly has a strong redish background tone. Or at least match one's constellation or region to one particular tone, much like they did in Freelancer.
Anyhow, personally I tend to think of David Braben as an 'einzelgõnger' and considering the exceptional teamwork behind EVE I have my doubts if Braben can manage to form and lead an equally talented team that's needed to make a succesfull MMORPG... I guess time will tell

I donÆt agree its not like saying there is no LCD TV market. What David said is true for the type of game he is planning. Elite 4 will do everything Elite 3 did and more and back in 2000 and even now we donÆt have the Internet infrastructure to support all that.
The processing power is just too much for 100Æs or 1000Æs of players in a galaxy of millions of fully 3D star systems. Elite 3 makes the Eve universe look tiny. Each system comes with correctly orbiting planets, moons and multiply stars. Even star bases orbit the planet. On top of that you can land on every planet which is fully 3D with hills, mountains, seas and 3D clouds and correct day and night. Then there are the cityÆs where you can land and watch the time on towers move correctly with the game time. Planets even had gravity which affect your ship and you could sling shot around a planet with skill.
All that just to cover the stuff in Elite 3 let alone the Elite 4 enhancements and all the stuff I didnÆt list. I agree with David when he says technology is not here yet for him to make Elite 4 as the game he wants. The CPU processing power, ram and bandwidth needed is not enough for the Internet infrastructure in 2000 and even in 2005 I dont think we have the infrastructure need perhaps at a push it could be done. But it would be costly.
Elite 4 also lets you get out your ship and move around on foot.
I donÆt see Elite 4 marking it way in shops in 2006. Perhaps an announcement in 1006 and in shops 2008 or 2009+

I never got what poeple saw in frontier TBH...noting but bad experiances with it.
Cool idea but teh RL phyiscs engine turned me off and remebering the inablity to recenter a analouge joystick and whatching my ship loop into the ground till it died on take off made it go back to teh shop really quick swoped for a copy of the bwing expansion for xwing if I remember correctly...
