Quote: You also have to look at the time you have put into eve though. I wouldn't want to throw away my multi SP character
At some point in time, the EVE servers will go offline, and you will lose that char then...
It all comes down to entertainment value, best bang for buck, most fun/time put in, etc...
If you build it they will come...
Right now EVE is king for this genre... ------------------------------------------------ Current Hobby other than EVE |

and thanx ill have to keep ears/eyes posted on elite
Elite seems to be a joke, no newer news then 2001 lol.
Star trek online from what i rea don their webiste is nothing like Eve.For me there are 2 things that disqualifies it :
1- Pvp only in some kind of simulators, no real pvp .WTF? in mmorpg no pvp ? then i prefer single player game....
2- Ship flying and combat seem only one side.As it is only one side apart from runnign around as person and fighting hand hel weapons i strongly doubt it can come anywhere near eve's combat , even if Eve's imho is highly imperfect atm.

And X BTF Online more of a factory Building game.
Edit: Besides I'm not going any ware as long as Verone is still playing this game. Can you imagine no Verone? :)
Sorry X is more of a flight sim with building and trading elements added. The story/background is expansive and deep. But I am unsure of how a flight sim can really work for an extended period of time as it brings in real world skill and given how hard 1st person shooters were after playing EVE, I would be concerned. So I guess we shall just have to wait and see.
Before playing EVE I would have gone straight for it but now I am less sure. _______

While X was a good effort, it never really had that certain something that EVE does. Bringing it into the MMO realm wouldn't do it for me either. The game has no panache.

Are you kidding? I've spent the last 2 years of my life in this game, there's no way I'm getting myself hooked on another one for the next 5 years _____________________________________

I will consider another game if it has combat on a solar system scale. If you ever read the dread empire falls trilogy you know the kind of combat I am looking for (last book out later this year :-) ). Until then I guess they all will be something I play with for a month or 2 just to get a different experience now and then.

Would you leave EVE for the Elite or X BTF MMORPG's that are coming in 2006 or beyond? :)
You know the thought of the T2 EVE style games comming online by 2006 had not even crossed my mind.. But here's the rub, by then ill be at least 1 year invested so it will come down to some basic self searching..
Had EVE significantly improved from whn I started? Had my enjoyment of the game gone up or down? Has the T2 game addressed all my complaints about EVE? How full was the universe? 20k? 25k? 35k? 50k simultaneous players? How much I was worth.
I think for me it would be those five things, in that order of importance, which I would weigh my decision on. If the ELITE game you speak of is very much based on the games I played way back in the day, I would have to say that I would absolutely play the free trial with much intrest. The story content would grow to accomodate the environment, I wouldn't prejudge based on the origional game content from years ago. I feel confident that landing on planets, and having to run blockades of pirates to the planet becaues its low sec, would be alot of fun for me. I believe the way Elite integrated the mining, trading and combat in equal aspects into a single career is awsome. EVE does not seem to do that for me.

Edited by: Noriath on 06/10/2005 04:03:34 Well, sooner or later someone is going to come up with a better MMORPG, I'm pretty sure of that...
What I would really be interested in would be a science fiction MMORPG where you're not a ship but a character on a ship. And please not Startrek Online, Startrek was suffering from franchise fatique before, but as soon as you go online with a well known TV and movie universe you can just go downhill from there... kind of like Starwars. Ok, starwars went downhill from the second they gave the Han Solo action figure a jetpack that has more weapons then the Deathstar.

the strength of eve is it can be upgraded to match new competitors CCP are much open to fan ideas and feedback - its online once it goes full broadband that opens up a lot more potential in terms of more bandwidth and more servers as IBM tecnology pushes forward = more players in a single system.
Eve has a lot more to go yet and i think it can evolve and still remain a long term game

I'm tired of eve, but there aren't any better games out. And I don't see any coming out either. The market research indicates that carebears are the biggest audience, so they corporate blobs keep cranking out carebear games. EVE is the last bastion of non-god-mode gaming.

i think eve works because it has a lot for all game types ie carebears to core PVPers CCP implement new featuers with the eye for a balance and they use all the datamining tools they can ie if one NPC trade good market is underdeveloped they beef it up if one aspect of combat is over ubre they nerf it towards a common middle ground this is another reason the game works well as well

I have an open mind for new games, especially good space opera SF games and would be willing to give the new Elite a try if it turns out as immersive as Freelancer.
How long I will stay on it is another matter. _______________________________________________ "Is it me or the bad guys just getting totally pathetic?"---Clover, Totally Spies, "Hope is wasted on the Hopeless."---Mandy, The Grim Adventures of Billy and Mandy. My opinion is that EVE has a head start on any new space-based MMO coming out because it already has a crapload of content dumped onto it. It stays looking beautiful and not getting torn apart in the graphics department while managing to have added a LOT of new content over the years. Any new MMO would have to have had a heck of a lot of work put into it to be anywhere close to what EVE has to offer.

Um..........
I'm not getting the OP or any of the replies here at all. X BTF 3 (reunion) is the next version of btf due out and elite 4 is the next announced version of Elite.
X-3 Reunion is not going to be a MMO or even a multi-player game, it's a single player only game that will also be released for the X-Box.
Elite 4 appears to be dead. It was going to be a single-player game with (maybe) a limited multi (as in 16-32 total players) player add-on. But this was announced in 2001 and not a word about it from Frontier since.
So, sure both those games have potential to be a few hours diversion, but they're NOT MMO's and they won't be competing with Eve.

EVE is toxic for my RL. It's my first and last MMO. If I leave it (and I don't want to really) it will be for a real life, and the odd RTS with my buddies.
