Drones! Love them or hate them, they are an integral part of EVE and one with much emotional attachment. Whether you pilot a drone boat or have been the recipient of their attention, nearly everyone has had some interaction with drones. However, the system behind drones, and the drones themselves, are a bit outdated.
Sir Tuxford has a new Dev Blog on drones. Some old friends are going through some changes, some new friends are coming, and even some new skills to work with the growing drone family.
Last time Tux blogged, it didn't go well. Let's try to keep the discussion polite, on topic and constructive, shall we?

I like everything except the Gallente drone thermal damage bonus.
coooome on, as if there is any reason to use thermal drones, they are the most useless of the whole lot. A damage bonus should cover all the drones

Seems good to me nothing more annoying than getting loads of lag as people launch 10 drones each .....

Love the ideas tbh, shame the sents in 0.4 and less hate them >.<
I suppose the most obvious question is when will we see them? Weeks? Months? Years? (lol)
I just hope that it doesn't ruin some ship roles. I.e. having drones from one ship dampening the hell out of the other leaving the slots for tackling / tanking and ganking.
Both a good and bad thing for small ships though...
Being able to web the little buggers from a distance will be useful from the pov of a battleship pilot, especially if these stack up. Even if they don't a selection of the new drones could make a small ship useless quickly. I.e neut / painter / web. I assume therefore the EWAR drones will be fairly sluggish?
It does mean that some smaller ships can worry about stacking up the scrams though, which helps with the stab probs.
The only other concern is that it's like giving drone-carrying frigs another mid slot.
Just some thoughts.

Same here: Like it all exept gallente having to stick to thermal.
Because also the amarr have no chance to select the damagetype, all will just tank against thermal. One hardener to rule them all! Old man says: You donŠt win a war with hundreds of TL2 items. You win it with millions of tritanium and pyrite.

No more than the Amarrian EM bonus.
Still, it's to be expected considering that missile damage bonuses generally only apply to a single damage type.

Lol sable, the Thorax still has more drone bay than any non drone specialist ship of its size... Don't be silly -==- Holy-Jim> as you know, surprise is the key to victory.....surprise! LooseCannoN> ahh! LooseCannoN> my plans have been foiled! |

I think this is very interesting.. exept the part of only bonus to thermal damage, which others have pointed out aswell.

Minmatar sentries worry me.
They all have poor tracking. But we have the poorest and then the secound lowest damage. But can hit the furthest. :(
So that basically will equate to the lowest damage as you wont be hitting much with the poor tracking? -

So in other words you cant solve the problem of drones causing lag so your just cutting the number down to solve this problem?
No offence but this is a **** idea and is something that doesnt need to be nerfed

The Gallante Thermal bonus is the same as the Caldari Kinetic only bonus to missiles, and yes both of them stink.

Edited by: Exioce on 31/10/2005 14:55:05 i really think the idea of cutting down on drone spam, unless you have a drone specialised ship. gg Tuxford, get that Drone Interfacing change done asap
EDIT - wait, wait , wait - if the drone you like has no thermal damage, what good will giving a thermal damage bonus be? zero multiplied by 10% is still zero

i like the changes except the domi... yes, i know you want less drones, but it's meant to be a drone monster ship which will now be only able to launch 5...
sure it gets a therm bonus, but hardly anyone uses therm drones... -----------

Edited by: Dark Shikari on 31/10/2005 14:53:55 There is a serious problem with these changes.
The first thing is that it forces Gallente into thermal damage.
The second is that it completely ruins the idea of drones as a primary weapon system. Now they're just going to be a secondary system. Restricting setups to cookie-cutter ideas is a bad thing.
BTW the Ishtar's price just fell to 60 million, and the value of thermal T2 drone BPOs just went up by about 50 times. - Proud member of the [23].

With all of the influence from the Gallente, I am amazed that the Minmatar do not have a drone ship. Either the Bellicose cruiser or Typhoon class battle ship are excellent choices.
Giving the Typhoon, which already has a large drone bay, some of these special abilities would enhance it greatly and make it a far more desirable ship to own, and use. It would give the Typhoon a purpose, something it currently does not possess.
We Minmatar need to train for Projectiles, Missiles and Drones already, so it would in fact be a very small issue giving us a drone carrier. It also makes a lot more sense then the Amarr having one.

Tracking is only relevant as beign part of the damage function. Range is the other part.
You'll simply have to anchor em further away.

Actually, less dronage means less lagg'age. So thats good.
Now if they could only solve the "umpteenbillion BM's in your hold" warp in and lag the hell out of the enemy.

"This doesn't really sound like nerf at all "
Actually it does. Before I could deal damage with bonuses on 4 damage types in an Ishtar/Dominix, after I only get a bonus on one damage type. Thats a MASSIVE nerf.

Edited by: ParMizaN on 31/10/2005 15:15:17 Very interesting. I like most of them, though i would say some (specifically the sentry, ewar and lights) need a little bit of consideration.
The domi is getting hit a little bit: maybe not as powerful 1v1 as it is now, not really a bad thnig as it is the best 1v1 bs atm and also the cheapest and least SP demanding.
the ishtar is also getting hit a little bit, which will hopeflly bring it into line with (most of) the rest of the hacs
Just interested to see how the ewar and the sentry drones will work
