Well... to prove a point or to even disprove a point... I just had a most honorable exchange with a pirate who basically offered a "free ride" and gave me much needed good advice.
To DE YANG, It was a pleasure to make your acquaintance. I hope to see you again... but way before you see me.

I have a simple answer to these questions....
Because I can.
A little more detailed. I'll kill anything I can get my hands on. Its for the boom, the loot, and for the killmail. And for the satisfaction that someone, somewhere is squirming in their chair because I killed 'em.
Noobs ***** about being shot...Well, I ask you this. Are you not going to shoot a low bounty NPC, because he is a noob npc? Take pity on him because his loot isnt worth your time, and you are probably gonna spend more on ammo than you are gonna get back? no? You have no problem with this? Well, neither do I. I'll recycle your civilian shield booster, and sell you basic thermal hardner to another noob, to make and pay for more ammo, so that I can do it again to one of your buddies.

its no easy task to lock a pod before the pilot warps out, too bad kill boards base points on bs's not on pods. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Now recruiting all pvpers, maybe 1 or 2 of the carebear sorts join channel "battlefodder" for recruiting details CEO Battlefodder inc Death is only the begining ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ |

There is plenty of reason to kill indies.

it reflects more on your arrogance to whine about being killed in low sercuity space. if you dont like it, DONT GO THERE.
Why would anyone in CS stare at you when he can shoot you? When has "why" ever appeared into a game that involves blowing others up?
You are the arrogant one for not reading my post and replying like this. I'm not whining, I just don't know what pirates get out of it... well I got my answers in this thread, but sure not because of you...

There is only one reason to kill indy: it is safe action for pirate. All other reasons are secondary. Yes, another point: generally pirates are weak in PvP. Pirates just not need good skills in PvP. Also obtaining these skills is to risky for pirates.

Eve is a sharktank.
You're asking why the shark chewed on your leg. Why do you kill people in counterstrike?
To see your kill counter go up by 1.
Doesn't matter. Fair, unfair, ready, not ready, half shields, full shields, just ate a sandwich, afk, drinking water, scratching your nose, it doesn't matter, you're a +1 kill in his killmail counter.
You have to remember, in this business having an evil reputation is good.
If someone with a 0.0 status convos you and asks for money, you're gonna be like "pfft I aint giving some carebear my money."
If someone with a -10 and 50 mil bounty convos you, there's a pretty good chance that the victim is gonna schit their pants, pay the local mining tax and go about their bidness.
So the answer is
1) Its good for business to be brutal 2) Because its fun to see you blow up 3) Need the +1 kill counter 4) To see if you will drop a module 5) To practice killing and be better at it 6) All of the above

I solo .4s in my destroyer all the time. I know its risky, but the rewrd is so much better than .5s, and until I get a cruiser, lvl 2 missions are kinda outta of the question ( yes I've tried them). You just have to be extra cautious. Use the map. Check for kills and ships destroyed before you make your destination. The "show pilots active in space in the last 30 mins" ( or something like that) is very hard to read, but if you can get it to work, is i invaluable. Find a .4 with no one in it if you can. Keep your eye on local chat at all times. Anyone on there, check them out, see how long they've beenn on, their sec rating, etc. If another palyer pops up at yor belt, leave immediately. Wait to check out what ship their flying until you have already initiated warp. ( also, there's an option in the overview settings to show ship type, ths way avoiding the whole renaming confusion. i.e. pirates will often label their ships as somethign else like calling a harpy "so and So's Merlin")

if you dont want to get caught by pirates, its as simple as fitting a warp core stab or two, and having safespots in the area you operate in - gatecamps are the only other thing to worry about, and u can determine their location from the map
as to why we kill indys and everything, path of least resistance tbh - barges and indys are great targets due to the possible loot they have, the nice ransom they'll fetch, and the lack of resistance they offer. however, I'm not afraid to go against another ship in my class size, say BC on BC.
yarrr and all that

Edited by: Moghydin on 30/12/2005 17:09:18 Pirates kill because they are pirates. They play the game to kill things, to get your loot and pod. Most PvP in this game is non-concensual. It's not a cowardice but a tactical move, to engage the enemy when you have most chances of winning and the enemy has least chances of winning. So if you want to stay out of PvP, stay out of low sec and may be you'll never be killed by another player. But if you go to low sec, stop whining and shoot back if you cannot run.

Real life fact. Pirates are ex-navy soldiers of monkish orders like the Knights of St.Stephano and dont say "yarr" all the time.
Hey, here's another "real life fact". People that whine about pirates being cowards, are cowards themselves. If they werent, they'd stuck if up and go hunt the pirates themselves instead of complaining.
Pirate's arent stupid, they are opportunists that attack weaker defended/armed ships to maximize efficiency for less risk for higher profit.
A single pirate attacking a battleship fleet to "pirate" them isnt brave, its stupidity with unnecessary risks. Its about efficiency.
Smartest thing said here. That from a Born Again n00b. Yea I quit once before Exodus was deployed.

if this is implemented to the game it will bring great balance to the game and new players dont despair. for all those bad ppl that like to inflic pain without concecuences this would be theyr reward.

As to poddings and psychology:
Podding people reinforces that the pirate is not to be toyed with. Much like public hangings, it serves to beat the sheep-like general populace into mewling submission so that they pay their ransom (or taxes if you happen to be a 'legitimate' government). So while poddings may seem unfair and unnecessary at first (especially the random ones), it adds to the whole air of fear and danger surrounding the pirate. Thus, when one actually offers to let you live for a small fee, you'll feel relieved and pay it. This fear probably actually saves lives, by making people pay up and by discouraging the faint of heart from even entering low-sec space.
Nicely put. That's a good way to look at it.

while i dont condone piracy, it isnt right to call pirates cowards, as ppl above have said. It may not be heroic taking on smaller vessels then oneself but at least you stay alive. Since pirates (& not being one I am only guessing) probably cant afford to risk loosing thier ships willie nillie, it makes sense not attacking superior vessels. Podding, I must admit, is something I dont sympathise with all that much unless its necessary (as i understand it you need to pod some1 to get their bounty, forgive me if im wrong), but I can see why some may indulge in such actions. As long as pirates leave me alone im sure my opinions wont change.

Edited by: GoGo Yubari on 01/01/2006 17:09:39 From the piratical (with intent to making a profit) perspective, I don't understand the insta-podding mentality. However, the threat of podding and the ransoming is a very solid way of making money. Surely this is obvious! Of course, not many people actually pay, which is stupid - refusing to pay will not make pirates disappear (contrarywise to the commonly held belief).
From the making-big-explosions-and-generally-blowing-stuff-up-for-kicks point of view, what's not to understand?

i got podded i sort of expected as i aproached a 0.0 system, i hoped being in somthing crappy they would see me as a non threat and ignore me. Still i took out insurance made sure my clone had more skill points than me and tried my luck.
After being blowin up 30 seconds after porting in and then podded 5 seconds afterwards i had a nice chat with someone who explained why i got podded and it was basically down to the fact they didnt like neutrals and were holding the system for themselves.
I didnt run and complain to everyone in the channel i sort of accepted it and they even sent me 500k to rebuy my ship which was probbly more than it was worth. Still it was a valuable lesson to learn and im glad i learned it at LOW levels than high levels. which is basically "dont go to a 0.0 grade system unless your prepared to die IE insurances and Clone"
pvp is fun and like folk say why would a pirate suicide against somthing much larger than themselves, I got the whole honour and courage crap from daoc regarding grey ganking. The fact is you need to teach folks that a pvp oriented game has no room for carebears. If i was going to make a run through a 0.0 system in somthing big then i might consider doing a run first in a shuttle and asking folks if they would mind or how much protection money i would have to fork up before i went through.
