Hey all
**** happens many ppl say! well it happened to me yesterday.
I was killing some rat in a 0.4 sector. I was having a hard time killing the rat, but I was gonna kill it eventually... All of a sudden a pirate pops out of nowhere - me having 0 shield and 1/2 armor on my destroyer - shoots two missiles and my ship blows up. Pods me right after.
Now I am not here to whine, since I knew it was risky going into 0.4 space, but why did he kill me like that? He killed me like a coward, when I was almost dead. Do pirates always behave this way? And did he get a reward for killing me? Cozz he wasn't asking for money either...

Well... he got a corpse for his hanger.. and some modules off your ship. And a couple of killmails. The killmails will have gone up on a kill board somewhere, and he'll have another few points next to his name.
To be honest.. he didn't attack you like a coward.. because 90% of pirates wouldn't have had any trouble with a new player in a destroyer even if you'd been at full shields. PvP can be scarce... and as a pirate.. I generally kill or ransom anything I can find. (Though usually nothing younger than a month.. lol.. I'm all heart.)

Well at the end of the day, when all's said and done..it's just fun. Simple as.
But remember, you now have 24 hours of kill rights to extract revenge on this low life. He can be attacked anywhere; donĘt get mad, get even.

I used to be appalled with poddings, I used to think of them as unnecessary and down right evil. Now I see that they are just the headshots of Eve. "Oh sweet kill! You got the pod as well!". I curse everytime I see the pod of my target/enemy warp away. That is why Im always packing smartbombs on my battleships =D

Look.. I don't know where this thing about pirates being cowards comes from. It's stupidity. We're trying to make a living in the game.. with a certain amount of roleplaying (I say Yarr a bit.)
I attack battleships at gates, a couple of times I've been solo.. (sentries got me once.. :) Just because I also attack destroyers and cruisers doesn't make me a coward.

I belive I saw you in Amamake. Which could explain the pirate etc...
I personally make it a point to kill newer players as often as I can. It comes down to the fact that If I dont kill them they just dont ever learn to watch out for pirates and then I come back later and have to blow up there first cruiser or Battleship because they cant pay the ransom.
So look at It this way if you had not been blown up then you would have probly been blown up later in a larger more expensive ship.

Pirates kill, its kinda what they do, doesnt matter if its your ship or pod, doesnt matter how old you are, they dont even care if you care, a kill is simply a kill, in all honesty pirates dont care what it is they kill, if its there it dies, your not much of a pirate if you let lots of prey disappear.

Most honorable carebears , miners and agent runners fall into the coward classification as most dont even fire back and half log.

Did he get a reward? At least 2.
-Any decent jettisoned modules -The corpse -The killmail
Not all pirates are after ransoms all the time, it just depends how the pirate is feeling or what he wants to do. He did not kill you like a coward, he almost definitely would've killed you whether you were fighting the rat or not.
Thank you for not whining though, at least you took it like a man and didn't do what some of the other posters do...
"A PIRATE KILLED ME 0.3 HE KILLED MY SHIP MY POD HE'S A ***** ******* %@#$@#$^&!@$$^^^**$$#%^$!!!!! CPP SHUD BAN HIM AND ANYONE LIEK HIM!"

Killing someones pod serves only one purpose, its to destroy his implants, period. Its like pulling the wings off a fly, it serves no other purpose then some sadistic subconcious urge all humans have. Killboard points? how many points do you get for destroying a pod?
Its a fair tactic in war since destroying pods makes the opponent lose more money in an attrition war/siege, but why pirates feel the need to pod, beside the sadistic thing is beyond me. As far as collecting corpses goes, i so far have never seen anyone post screenshots or brag about the number of corpses they own.

Yes, but usually these people do not try to play Big Bang Hero. Contrary to average pirate which is of course Real Hero. But in fact pirate is usual coward. Because there is nothing heroic in killing defenseless noobs, shuttles and industrials.

Edited by: Athanaric on 29/12/2005 15:54:40 Speaking of bravery and cowardice in an anonymous, electronically-mediated, fictitious game world is a bit silly. If you feel courage is actually an element of video gaming, I encourage you to leave your mom's basement once in a while and interact with real humans. Like ask a girl out or something...that should take some 'courage.'
As to poddings and psychology:
Podding people reinforces that the pirate is not to be toyed with. Much like public hangings, it serves to beat the sheep-like general populace into mewling submission so that they pay their ransom (or taxes if you happen to be a 'legitimate' government). So while poddings may seem unfair and unnecessary at first (especially the random ones), it adds to the whole air of fear and danger surrounding the pirate. Thus, when one actually offers to let you live for a small fee, you'll feel relieved and pay it. This fear probably actually saves lives, by making people pay up and by discouraging the faint of heart from even entering low-sec space.
Also, explosions make my pants get all tight in front.
Edit: OP has a good attitude about the whole thing I think.

No one has ever claimed that there is any honor in killing weaker targets. I don't care if people think so either, because it is the truth. Killing weaker targets is not honorable, nothing to argue here. However, when people with your shared opinion comes and says pirates are dishonorable, I lash back. Killing newbies does not make a pirate honorable, but it sure as hell does not make him automatically dishonorable.
There is no honor in paying taxes, going to work, going to school, spending your vacation with your family or buying a new car. Does this mean that the lack of honor extracted from these actions mean that they are dishonorable? Wouldn't that mean that every ordinary citizen such as yourself are lowlife scumbags without honor that deserves to be mocked in public by anonymous strangers?

It's true.. all this discussion of honour and so forth is a little silly.
In the context of the game.. I'd say just about the only dishonourable thing a pirate could do is to ransom somebody and then kill 'em.
As far as honour goes... meh. I could take it or leave it. If I think I can kill you... I'll attack. If I don't.. I'll get some help or move on. I'm honest... If I jump into your belt.. or you see me hovering over a gate, it doesn't take a genius to work out what comes next. I'm -9.6 lol... p.s if anybody wants to add to my bounty.. that would be great. He killed you because you made yourself an easy target. He didn't appear out of nowhere. He was obviously in local before he found you volunerable in the belt. You just let your guard down.
He podded you because you weren't prepared to warp away once your ship blew up. A hint, turn off turret and all other effects (CTRL-ALT_Shift+E and CTRL-ALT_Shift+T). This way you won't lag so bad when the ship pops. As your ship is about to blow be ready to right click and warp to your safe spot, which you of course created on entering the >.4 system, right?
A few simple precautions would have prevented your getting podded and/or killed at all.
You are off the map, and there be monsters here. |

Best bet is to train tanking and gunnery skills or bring friends. If solo, just expect to lose alot of ships in low sec. Honestly, ratting in a rifter and docking after every belt is a good way to keep your isk and not lose too much at a time. Avoid fitting tech 2 and expensive named mods. Don't fly in low sec with implants. Maybe fit warp core stabs if you don't mind running. Or gyros if you wanna fight it out .

I believe I just posted them explicitly.
Most important, watch local like a hawk, right click "show info" any new contact in local. Negative sec status, safe spot immediately, don't finsh killing rat or picking up loot, just run to safe.

Keep local open.. keep it seperate from everything else, and check the info of every new player who appears.
In Castor.. there was a blue ball thing in the bottom right of the screen. It was some kind of scanner.. but I have to say, it was bloody useless. I used to detatch the local chat window and sit it all by itself directly over the top of the useless radar display.
Keep your eye on local... it'll save your ship.

I help noobs when I can, but if I see a random player trying to move around in his little frigate, I will kill it, because sometimes they drop the most valuable loot.
And killing pods is just a way to keep the smack down in local, and prevent the guy from warning all the timid people on the other side of the gate.

I feel for you my friend, but the only way to learn lessons is to have them happen to you. Have a think about what you have learned from this...
1) .4 is no place for a destroyer on his own ratting 2) Player sec status below -5? guess whats coming next 3) Local chat is a useful tool 4) Warp Core stabs are your friends 5) Some pirates like the thrill of the hunt, some are skilled, some are not-so skilled , some are dangerous BUT most importantly avoid unless you are prepared and even then some of them have more tricks than David Copperfield. Pirating is not my cup of tea but without them EVE would not be the same.

anyhow, you can say pirates only gank noobs, but being new to the proffession, I say it's a damn hard job to make a living out.
You don't just gank NPC-ers without any defense, rather then their tank. You're also in low sec space, ALL the time, you have to fight other pirates. You have to watch out for ambushes 24/7. You can get ganked at a gate by campers while hunting. But most of all. The skill of tracking someone down with your scanner before they've seen you in local. I wouldn't say the pirate proffession is one of cowards, rather then to see a nice and easy explosion Once In A While...

I have a simple answer to these questions....
Because I can.
A little more detailed. I'll kill anything I can get my hands on. Its for the boom, the loot, and for the killmail. And for the satisfaction that someone, somewhere is squirming in their chair because I killed 'em.
Noobs ***** about being shot...Well, I ask you this. Are you not going to shoot a low bounty NPC, because he is a noob npc? Take pity on him because his loot isnt worth your time, and you are probably gonna spend more on ammo than you are gonna get back? no? You have no problem with this? Well, neither do I. I'll recycle your civilian shield booster, and sell you basic thermal hardner to another noob, to make and pay for more ammo, so that I can do it again to one of your buddies.

Eve is a sharktank.
You're asking why the shark chewed on your leg. Why do you kill people in counterstrike?
To see your kill counter go up by 1.
Doesn't matter. Fair, unfair, ready, not ready, half shields, full shields, just ate a sandwich, afk, drinking water, scratching your nose, it doesn't matter, you're a +1 kill in his killmail counter.
You have to remember, in this business having an evil reputation is good.
If someone with a 0.0 status convos you and asks for money, you're gonna be like "pfft I aint giving some carebear my money."
If someone with a -10 and 50 mil bounty convos you, there's a pretty good chance that the victim is gonna schit their pants, pay the local mining tax and go about their bidness.
So the answer is
1) Its good for business to be brutal 2) Because its fun to see you blow up 3) Need the +1 kill counter 4) To see if you will drop a module 5) To practice killing and be better at it 6) All of the above

I solo .4s in my destroyer all the time. I know its risky, but the rewrd is so much better than .5s, and until I get a cruiser, lvl 2 missions are kinda outta of the question ( yes I've tried them). You just have to be extra cautious. Use the map. Check for kills and ships destroyed before you make your destination. The "show pilots active in space in the last 30 mins" ( or something like that) is very hard to read, but if you can get it to work, is i invaluable. Find a .4 with no one in it if you can. Keep your eye on local chat at all times. Anyone on there, check them out, see how long they've beenn on, their sec rating, etc. If another palyer pops up at yor belt, leave immediately. Wait to check out what ship their flying until you have already initiated warp. ( also, there's an option in the overview settings to show ship type, ths way avoiding the whole renaming confusion. i.e. pirates will often label their ships as somethign else like calling a harpy "so and So's Merlin")

if you dont want to get caught by pirates, its as simple as fitting a warp core stab or two, and having safespots in the area you operate in - gatecamps are the only other thing to worry about, and u can determine their location from the map
as to why we kill indys and everything, path of least resistance tbh - barges and indys are great targets due to the possible loot they have, the nice ransom they'll fetch, and the lack of resistance they offer. however, I'm not afraid to go against another ship in my class size, say BC on BC.

Edited by: Moghydin on 30/12/2005 17:09:18 Pirates kill because they are pirates. They play the game to kill things, to get your loot and pod. Most PvP in this game is non-concensual. It's not a cowardice but a tactical move, to engage the enemy when you have most chances of winning and the enemy has least chances of winning. So if you want to stay out of PvP, stay out of low sec and may be you'll never be killed by another player. But if you go to low sec, stop whining and shoot back if you cannot run.

Real life fact. Pirates are ex-navy soldiers of monkish orders like the Knights of St.Stephano and dont say "yarr" all the time.
Hey, here's another "real life fact". People that whine about pirates being cowards, are cowards themselves. If they werent, they'd stuck if up and go hunt the pirates themselves instead of complaining.
Pirate's arent stupid, they are opportunists that attack weaker defended/armed ships to maximize efficiency for less risk for higher profit.
A single pirate attacking a battleship fleet to "pirate" them isnt brave, its stupidity with unnecessary risks. Its about efficiency.

Nicely put. That's a good way to look at it.

while i dont condone piracy, it isnt right to call pirates cowards, as ppl above have said. It may not be heroic taking on smaller vessels then oneself but at least you stay alive. Since pirates (& not being one I am only guessing) probably cant afford to risk loosing thier ships willie nillie, it makes sense not attacking superior vessels. Podding, I must admit, is something I dont sympathise with all that much unless its necessary (as i understand it you need to pod some1 to get their bounty, forgive me if im wrong), but I can see why some may indulge in such actions. As long as pirates leave me alone im sure my opinions wont change.

However, the threat of podding and the ransoming is a very solid way of making money. Surely this is obvious! Of course, not many people actually pay, which is stupid - refusing to pay will not make pirates disappear (contrarywise to the commonly held belief).
From the making-big-explosions-and-generally-blowing-stuff-up-for-kicks point of view, what's not to understand?

i got podded i sort of expected as i aproached a 0.0 system, i hoped being in somthing crappy they would see me as a non threat and ignore me. Still i took out insurance made sure my clone had more skill points than me and tried my luck.
After being blowin up 30 seconds after porting in and then podded 5 seconds afterwards i had a nice chat with someone who explained why i got podded and it was basically down to the fact they didnt like neutrals and were holding the system for themselves.
I didnt run and complain to everyone in the channel i sort of accepted it and they even sent me 500k to rebuy my ship which was probbly more than it was worth. Still it was a valuable lesson to learn and im glad i learned it at LOW levels than high levels. which is basically "dont go to a 0.0 grade system unless your prepared to die IE insurances and Clone"
pvp is fun and like folk say why would a pirate suicide against somthing much larger than themselves, I got the whole honour and courage crap from daoc regarding grey ganking. The fact is you need to teach folks that a pvp oriented game has no room for carebears. If i was going to make a run through a 0.0 system in somthing big then i might consider doing a run first in a shuttle and asking folks if they would mind or how much protection money i would have to fork up before i went through.

Or they call you a brave idiot if you decide to stay, take your chances and die. You could say that a good pirate would not lose, but then pirate who doesn't ever lose has to hunt people who are much weaker than him; thus he is called a coward....
And as for killing destroyers and podding new players. First reason is that targets are rare, and usually sit in stations for hours even if you try to stay around. Secondly, no kill is a waste. Let them hate us as long as they fear us.

Having (very) recently become a pirate, and having been podded and ransomed several times, I can see both sides. I used to feel, pretty vehemently, that pirating (at least of a certain kind) was just robbing people of their enjoyment of the game. Getting popped by Ginger Magician in an Apoc when I was three days old was not a good first impression .
Later on I lost some ships (Ruptures mainly) that I had spent a lot of care and attention on to pirates. One or two of them were just gits and deserved the completely impotent flaming I gave them on local . Others (like Mr Da Vinci) were a bit kinder and spent some time explaining their point of view to me.
Now I'm just incredibly bored with missions, so just joined a PvP corp and just popped my first Brutix . But I am determined to be polite, sympathetic and honest with people.

Coward will warp at any sign of warship presense and save own life and money. Brave idiot will attack warship and die.

Aggression in front of 3 BS leads you to the your death. Or you require afk battleships?

They are right. You are brave idiot. Much more simple way is selfdestructing. And this way is quite annoying for other people.

1. They didnt pay the 9 mil for ransom which is really low and surprising only about 10% of people podded take that option
2. They were too close to the gate when their ship got destroyed
3. they were war targets
This is one of the reasons you got podded if I was there.

don't see me paying 9M isk in stead of having you annihilate my destroyer :)... btw don't you adjust your ransom to the target? you'd make more money...
I don't thnk I would ever pay a ransom, unless it's realy low compared to a ship loss... for most people it's a pride thing I guess :p

After a month of flying with -c-f- our 0.0 op team was asking everyone for 25 mil for pods about 50 pods later and no isk we decided to alter our ransoming policy.
Most people can't stomach paying someone who just blew them up, but if its gonna take you an hour just to get back to the same system and it's even less then a new clone alone then less than ten figures seems very reasonable.
For pilots who don't do much to make isk outside of loot 3 mil a piece is way better than hearing the squish.

I just got podded about half an hour ago, because I tried to comply with the pirates and pay their toll, but could not transfer ISK to them because I am on a trial account. I understand that there is a risk associated with going into lower security level space (0.4 in this case), but does this do the community any good to blow up a newbie because of a trial account restriction? I may very well take up their line of work one day as I have in other games, but I can't see that I'd go after absolute newbies. What's the fun in that? I'd rather get them when they have more to offer. There's something so unappealing about being able to shoot someone once and blow up their ship.

News flash.
We're all murderers, we are all control freaks. You want to control your safety, your experience. I want to control your lack there of. He who is stronger wins.
In the end I am the only one in control. My safety and my strength are my and brothers' manifestation. Many of you pay out your souls for Concord to control your world. A brittle shell, a simple illusion, that safety is no more tangible then a dream. Reality is that empire is no safer then 0.0.
Every day so many pay dearly for that lie, the precious whispered reassurance in their ear. There is only one inevitability, your number will come up one day. When the warriors you so faithfully entrust roll over and show their bloated bellys, fat with the life and freedom they've taxed from you, you will realize how vulnerable you really are. How vast and uncaring the universe can be.
This is the fate you accept. I do not. May you find your enlightenment as I have, before it is too late. You still have a chance.

Exactly my point. If one warps away, he is a coward. If one usually decides to fight, sooner or later he will lose, so he is a brave idiot.
Ladies and gentlemen, its now a proven fact that all pirates are either cowards or brave idiots. However all credit goes to the one and only who showed us the light - Iberi!
I am sorry about this being a bit off topic, but I just could not resist the opportunity.

Sounds like the same conversations from UO, except with Spaceships. Good to see gaming hasn't changed over the years.

Most pirates are just playing counterstrike in space - especially so the lone hunters. I far prefer the pirate corps, the hunting packs and people who try to lock down systems.
They all gank me the same tho, just I feel more involved if I'm properly ganked :)

It is a sad reality. Warship is testing tool for a pirate.

Quote: Lifewire > just go away
I told you to warp away - without paying. Since you had a trial account you cannot pay a toll. You should have warped away. However, it was a trial account and you could test how tolling works, or not?
Next time have a real account, then you are able to pay a toll, ok?
All this is a general problem: CCP cares a lot about coding new stuff, but every patch they forget to code the "strike colors button". This would be an option for a player to surrender and imobilize his ship for the time being in "Strike colors mode". This mode would offer time for roleplay tollings. Try to see it from a pirate view: if a ship is able to warp or move to the gate, what can be done to stop it??? Sure, you can web and scramble it. But then tank the sentrys for the time of the convo and tolling??? Hm, no - we simply shoot it down if the pilot doesnt offer to pay a toll and pays in time. It¦s CCPs fault and i really hope that the next patch offers some good pirate features like the srike colors button.
Until there is a solution our way is to open fire at any target that didnt offer to pay a toll directly after entering local chat.

In comical sense, it means "I pod, therefore I can".
I know, as I said I'm a native latin speaker... =)
Wow, a native latin speaker! What was it like growing up in Vatican City or ancient Rome???
So, Cogito Ergo Sum roughly means "I think, therefore I am", everyone knows that.
Since Podito doesn't have a Latin equivilant that I can find, let's the use the Spanish verb poder, 'to be able': "I am able therefore I am". Or "I am a little pod therefore I am"? Thats no good.
How about: iugularo ergo sum, I murder because I am. I think that's the right ablative tense, but my Latin is ****.
