To correct you,
Originally by: Erris Veloce From the Forsaken Ruins short story:
"Mattias focused the drone cameras on the Blackbird, inspecting the massive gashes in its hull. Judging from the metallic carnage, he estimated that sections of at least 6 decks were now exposed directly to space. Somewhere beneath where he was sitting, hundreds of crewmembers were sealing off compartments, fighting electrical fires and desperately struggling to keep his ship's vital systems functioning. How many of them died because of this, he wondered. As the captain of the ship, he was sealed inside a pod made of an ultra-strong, Jovian-manufactured alloy and neurologically connected to the Blackbird's systems. Inside of it, so long as the ship was intact, the captain was immune from harm. It was the Jovians who had introduced this remarkable innovation, and it had changed the face of naval warfare forever.
Mattias began contemplating the Jovians and their technology. As spectacular as the pod was, it was also emblematic of the traits that defined the entire Jovian race: hyper-intelligent, but utterly and completely numb to human emotion. Modern day starships are massive and incomprehensibly complex. Before the pod, there were so many points of failure between a captain's decision and the execution of his orders. The ability to create a direct neurological connection between a human mind and a ship's systems reduced those points of failure to zero. Commanding a starship was now a natural extension of the mind's will. All a captain needed was to just think about what he wanted his ship to do, and it was done.
To Mattias, it was all so impersonal. Because of the technology, a captain could skipper numerous ships over the course of a lifetime without ever meeting a single crewmember from any of them. Mattias was one of the few who made an effort to meet at least some. It seemed like the least he could do in exchange for their unquestioning faith in his abilities, and their trust in him to keep them alive."
Now Mattias is a pod-pilot and a relatively modern one as well. The story lists common tasks a crewmember would peform.
Don't forget, CCP Prime Fiction a.k.a the chronicles and the stories are literally the word of god in this matter. What they say goes, as they've created the EVE universe so to speak.
Why don't people understand that?

As Nikolai correctly points out, and you would know if you had reserched a bit deeper, these early Caldari ships were experimental single man fighters that are the precursors to todays frigates. Bigger ships are supposed to have crew all be it a much reduced number of crew. This fact is supported by the wet grave story and possably some others (im re-reading them atm).
What we need to remember though is that all the background provided by "official" sources is guide material to kick start the RP in Eve. I persoanlly see nothing wrong in ppl generating their own plausable material as long as they are having fun and not being outrageous in the context of the game i think its is wrong that many people here are trying to force their version/spin on what they think your RP should be.

Read closely - it only points to the absence of a bridge, not the absence of an entire crew. The commands go neurally, not the rest of crew duties.

I really can't believe this discussion has come up again, and even with all the prime fiction proof people still argue. Now I'm going to get a little nasty because this is a pet peeve of mine.
SHIPS HAVE CREWS.
It is a part of the official CCP lore as many have posted examples of. Trying to claim otherwise is simply willful ignorance.
For those of you playing the Roleplay card: YOU DON'T WRITE THE PRIME FICTION
Part of roleplaying is that you are expected to roleplay within the world set forth by the game makers. What they say, both ingame and out of game, is law. If CCP says your ships have crews then your ships have crews. If you are a decent roleplayer, then you will INCORPORATE this information into your roleplay, not IGNORE it.
To summarize, if you claim that in your little gameworld your ship is flown by you alone, then you are not roleplaying. You are making **** up that DOES NOT EXIST in the game. In the Eve Universe where you play, the ships have crews. Deal with it. It's not a complicated concept to grasp here.

The pod pilot is just the pilot/captain of the ship. However with the techonology of the pod he does not need a 'bridge crew' like in the Navy / Star Trek models of how ships run.
However, these ships are HUGE, and if you notice most all ships have rows and rows of lights. This means that yes, most bigger ships have crews... for heck someone has to reload all that ammo of shove the drones out of the bays, or move stuff around from your ship's cargo bay to station hangars for you... being stuck sealed up in a pod is kind of limiting for all that.

In the info section of site they used to have ship stats.
Frigates had 0 crew members, except kestrel which for some reason had 3... i think.
Crusier had anywhere from 10s to 100s. Battleships had thousands. Average indy had 5 - 10.

Yeah, my crew is kinda hell-bound on fighting. Can't blame 'em really.
The main issue came from the laser/missile crew disbute. While the missile bay had some work to do with the occasional rats, the laser bay crew got ****ed off at mining lasers, especially with all the ore transfer and such an such. The missile crew decided it would be fun to put teddybears at the mining lasers before the crew woke up one day and all hell broke loose. The laser crew stuffed the teddies into the missile launchers and when a measely frigate came after my prophecy...well...you can imagine.
No harm was done as the frigate left, probably ****ing it's pants in laughter as the last teddies bot burned when they warped away, but the whole thing kinda kicked me in the butthocks and said "Come on, do something."
So, pleasure hub it is.
I don't think the issue comes from "not dying", but more of the, "we like to kill stuff" aspect.
My whole crew got some nifty clones so they don't mind dying. I guess it's the lack for the need of training or implants that makes them shrug at the whole death thing.
Only lost one ship to date though, so the crew is quite happy at the moment.

Originally by: Nikolai Nuvolari Lately, I have seen more and more threads questioning and disputing and fighting the FACT that our ships have crews.
Multiple things in the Prime Fiction (which is OFFICIAL), such as Hands of a Killer, Forsaken Ruins, and The Jovian Wet Grave, state clearly that our ships have crews.
Please, please, please, just accept that we have crews. I feel like smashing my head against the wall until I give myself a concussion, just due to the obstinate stupidity that it takes to fight this long and hard against a simple fact, especially when I can't even understand why people find the idea of crews to be so objectionable.
I didn't want to invoke this, but I think I might have to.
Every time you say our ships don't have crews, God kills a kitten. Please, think of the kittens.

Ships have crews, PF clearly states this, and since that's written in large part by devs. It's fact, cold hard fact. Now you can roleplay your way out of this by inventing some sort of crew rescue/cloning/teleporting/Ireallydon'tcare system. But denying there are crews contradicts PF ( BIIIGG rp nono ) and is just the stuborn trying to find a easy way out.

In my own little world of mine, frigates are one man ships but I mean... come on, even a destroyer needs a crew or a least 1 or 2 guys working around the clock.
When you see those huge ships flying around, specially gallente, if they don't have a crew... why do they have so many windows lol.
I always wanted to be a captain and well my ship has crews and i'm the captain :P

Well the smallest ship in the game (shuttles) are the size of 747 Jets, probably bigger! You honestly think that your character can take care of gigantic ships like this all by yourself without any help? Who knows maybe someday they will start making it so you have to stock your ship with crew members, and the better the crew members the faster your repair times/navigation/engineering etc.. The reason why only you get to survive explosions in your pod is because you are the captain, it was your ship, and as far as most of us are concerned, our crew can gth while we fly off to safety muahahhaa. ------------------

all my ships have escape pods, custom order job but it seems to work out well.
but im sure the Indy and even the Freighter have maybe 10 crew, just think of our biggest oil tanker on the seas today and they have very very few crew yet the ship is larger then a nimitz class carrier which has about 5k-6k crew.

Do you have any kind of idea about how much bigger the freighter is than our oil tankers? I can agree that it might require less crewmembers than combat ships of the same size, because huge sections are obviously devoted to cargo space, but even so you'd need dozens of mechanics to perform maintenance on the engines alone. Not to mention the poor, poor janitors. Imagine being tasked with keeping the interior of a freighter clean...

That's the easiest part of keeping a ship in space. Container of grain break open? Not a problem. Make sure everything's tied down or out of the compartment, clear it of crew, seal it up, and select "vent compartment" from your neural HUD.
