Do any of the devs that mess around with the fonts run the game at 1280x1024 on a 19-inch monitor? I'll ask again since we never got an answer. What was wrong with the pre-RMR font that everyone could read and wasn't blurry?

One things for certain, they don't test to see the difference between a V and a Y in game.

Hmmm... Seems their monkeys shouldn't get a treat then.

The new one is very cool looking at some places. And actually I recall one of the devs commenting on it too. He had way past 20" TFT panel and mostly liked the font if I recall correctly.
It's not blurry. Might be only if you have a sub-standard CRT panel. On modern better quality TFT panels the newer font is so sharp that it slices your eyes. Just a few of the characters resemble each others a bit too much.

What about the number 8... I can't tell half of the time if it's 8, 6, 0, or 9

That's only been a problem since the RMR patch, the v/y difference has been in since I started this game nearly 2 years ago..... ___

I've just about had enough of this. Why the constant drive to change the font? Font should be legible first and cool second. The point of the (digitally) printed word is to convey information, not cause headaches. Why must CCP undo so much good with these hardheaded and unilateral font changes?

That is my point. I don't (and I'm sure most of us don't) have a 20" super expensive TFT. I have a very good 19-inch CRT which works perfectly well with every other peice of software except EVE. This would lead me to believe it's not my monitor LOL!

Coming off my high horse, the font looks much better in 'expanded' mode. At least in 1024x768.

Unicode. To support character sets required for many languages a lot easier.

Damn, this is really bad :(
Isn't 1280x1024 a widely used resolution?
This just seems ridiculous to me.

Due to the fact the client went from ascii to unicode (to allow all those people who don't use the romain alphabet, plus specal chars) they could not use the old font, so they HAD to change it.
the problem with the font is that it works fine for some people (me included running it at 1024 on a 14.5" laptop and 1600 on a 21" CRT and it great), but others it seems its bad.

So why don't they offer a selection of fonts and let us choose one in the settings window?

Agreed, it was set back to default non-expanded after the patch for me.

I have one HP 2335 (23" LCD widescreen) and one Samsung 930BF (19", 4ms, 3 days old TFT) and a set of brand new glasses and I'm not sure I agree with you on this...

What I dont get is why they cant just let you pick between several fonts, particularly the castor-era one that actually worked (seriously how hard would it be to convert it to unicode or whatever). That way everyone can just pick your favorite font, like you pick your favorite UI color etc. _________________ [SAK] Alumnus--And Proud Of It! -- aka Cpt Bogus Is that my torped sig cloaking your base?

1280x1024 here too on plasma and fonts are still TERRIBLE, causing eye-strain and headache. Really missing pre-RMR

if ($font_selected == 1) { use the good old font; } else { use the damn ugly new font; }
That is too hard to program for the Devs... ____________________ CEO Denial of Service

Am I glad someone already started a thread on this "improved font rendering" miracle.
Bloody anaconda tripe!
I merely had severe eye-strain with the original RMR font/rendering, I'm certifiably cross-eyed with the current "improvement".
At 1280x1024 on a very good 17' CRT, I can't see a thing with the font set to normal; with the font set to "expanded", menu text overflows, gets hidden and becomes guesswork while the chat is blown up and yet squished as though I was looking at a jpeg with 80% compression of badly anti-aliased Arial text. Best viewing option in chat: Expanded, aa - because then I know I need a magnifying glass but at least the spacing is correct.
Would someone please show me the design rule that says "If it's unicode, it's got to be illegible"?
It's perfectly avoidable - for being totally unnecessary - crap like this that does much more harm to this game than legions of macrominers ever could.

Havent seen it yet, but it cant be worse than the current one?
I have a 1280 * 1024 CRT like alot of the people here id imagine, I would have thought the devs would have simply brought a cheap one and tested the font out on it? A couple of quid outlay to see if its readable for most of the people here?
Im sure they must have dont that. Anyway, lets see what it looks like when i log in. The last one made my head hurt -

As per the new Rodents With Disabilities Act CCP was required to hire exactly Three Blind Mice to meet the minimum requirements based on the number of hamsters they have running the wheels that power the servers.
They tried having them run, but that went bad after they started going the wrong way and crashed the jita cluster.
So instead they sent them up to UI development figuring that would keep them out of the way in an area they couldn't cause any harm.
In a usual display of the left hand not knowing, they unfortunatly choose to do so at a time when major upgrades, like the font, were being worked on...
