Naww... a sighn that says: "Guard Dominix On Duty" or "Trespassers Will Be Shot."
On a more serious note - I love this idea, and I think that CCP should implement it when they get a moment - it will add to the depth of the game play.

Edited by: Kulerak on 18/07/2008 16:54:11 There should be an option for hiding these with a small cloaking generator which would require a small amount of fuel per month but not too much to keep them affordable.
I also liked the idea someone had about not being able to bookmark the roid, just have it show up like an agent bookmark and also in the player's asset list.
Also a small clone vat bay would be nice :-)
Any other thoughts?

Well looking way back, this post started 2 1/2 years ago. Anyone have any clue if this is a serious consideration by CCP? This idea is one of my favorites and would be a lot of fun for those who run solo a lot. As you can see by the hit counter, it appears to be very popular.

I love this idea! Perfect fr small corps or individuals. Just anchor a few of these in a system and you'll never set foot in a station again. Perhaps really large roids could be fitted with a small factory, such as 1 or 2 jobs only. I like the idea of being able to fit stuff on it, maybe ahve about the same fittign abilities as a cruiser for a really small roid and a really big roid like a cap ship maybe. They wouldnt be very useful in combat, unless you're fighting wars at a safe spot :P |

I was impressed and disappointed by this thread for a couple reasons. Impressed that so many have taken a liking to the idea, commented, refined and endorsed it. Disappointed that its 2 years old and no one at CCP seems to have take it seriously.
There are obviously a few items from a programming standpoint that would be difficult but surely not impossible. By the way I did read the linked alternative post as well and I still find the raw concept to be very plausible, unique and apparently sought after.
As a large corp owner and Alliance Executor I can say that even from that perspective smaller one man bands or groups should be given equal consideration however like anything in eve it would come with con's to equal the pro's to maintain balance.
In real life I live in and work on RV's so I will put a unique twist on this from my perspective to try to make it developer friendly but at the same time try to deliver to the little guy.
Ships are added a bit more easily so why not just make the single player home or office in the form of a space faring recreational vehicle. Surely if we ventured out into space these types of ship would in fact exist.
My concept is simple, create a ship similar to a hauler in as much as it is slow and limited in its abilities and defense but give it a few bonus features. (Trainable Features Of Course)
Beginner Ship: Frig V, Exploration Craft II and Anchoring II Ship has 3 Hangers inside. When anchored hanger I can only house one mining class ship of choice up to frigate. Hanger II can store 1,300 M3 of modules and Hanger III can store 3,900 in Ore.
When mining craft is deployed the owner can access hangers after anchoring ship to change modules or dump to the ore hanger. When the cargo hanger is filled the owner can then un-anchor and dock inside and resume control of vessel (Cargo inside miner allowed to stay in hold)
Accessory option: 3 Variants on cloaking devices: Rock Cloak, Makes ship appear as a asteroid. Debris Cloak: Makes ship appear and a piece of space debris. Sentry Cloak: Makes ship appear as a sentry gun. Train: Cloaking II
Each level of train (Exploration Ship) would increase the size of the ship and its hangers to eventually contain a hulk with storage capacities also increased in the Cargo, Module and Ship Hangers to max at Lev V.
Cloaking train increases would also increase ability to fit ship size and decrease de-cloaking perimeter. Example: Beginner level II de-cloaks if object comes within 5000 reducing down to 500 meters at lev V.
All currently cloaked craft can be found but with great difficulty and several probes making it difficult but not impossible to find or stumble across.
If found normal agro counter would apply and attack mechanisms in High Sec however one twist for balance... With Hacking V and Lock Description I trained the vehicle can be hacked open (Same chance rules apply increasing chances on trainĘs I-V)
Being hacked would cause the 15 min theft agro timer to kick in but if in high sec unless the ship was fired on concord would not get involved (Simple Theft) Theft would be limited to the content of the ship hangers not the ship itself, in order to steal the ship it would have to be boarded while in un anchoring mode say 60 seconds to make it plausable but hard.
*Slim chance but possible
As far as defenses go I would say the ship have defenses only when in transit and leave the option up to the pilot to fit the ship for transportation to and from a station or fill the lows with armor plates or expanders. Those already have pros and cons such as increasing storage space at the risk of lowering armor hit points.
NPC wise I would say if a RAT appeared while in transit or anchoring it would fire on it like any other vessel and if by chance a rat got close enough to break the cloak it would be fired on as well however if hidden properly and carefully the cloak like on a regular ship would render it unnoticed.

One other quick addition.
Since this is a one man show vessel then it should have a config mode to allow access to others only when in fleet.
When not in fleet it cannot be accesses by anyone but the owner. After all Corps are still needed for something
Hope this helps get some creative juices flowing in the devs and answers the desires of the new building themselves up players.

I like this concept
It seems there are five possible ideas here
1) A new class of ships that are anchorable and cloakable, ranging in size from a cheapo frigate-sized "secure can with engines" up to something more like a carrier. Or perhaps a modular ship that can start small and be built up as the ISK allows. It would be able to fit a range of new modules like a research/ manufacturing/refining/ auto defense guns (or possibly improved sentry drones) etc, though with limited manoeuvereability as they are intended to be primarily static (maybe no warp drives. or take a long time to get into warp first time as thy have to go into "transit mode" or something like that etc). This would probably be the easiest to implement as all the mechanisms already exist. They would be subject to all the same events as normal ships, though they may be more difficult to scan down than most existing ships. Maybe ORE could start a new range of ships
2) A micro-POS, with correspondingly limited powergrid and CPU, again with a group of new modules, like a smaller shield radius etc and simplified management requirements and no sovereignty impact. This would be a good way of getting people into running bigger POSes. Again just an extension of current stuff, and probably requiring relatively little dev resources. They should probably only be anchorable in deep space as well
3) Not much covered, but a micro-outpost/ deep-space habitat (which I think was the original idea - I've read so many posts about this) - again relatively small dev cost - like the micro-POS it would be more limited in what it could do, and would again have no impact on Sov.
4) Player-owned condos based in stations - this would probably need a lot more dev resource than the first three, and doesn't seem to have a lot of support, though it would probably have the least problems with lag etc.
5) Asteroid bases. A really nice idea, but might require the most development.
I think all of them are good, and would all be great additions to the game. Item 4 could well come along with the "walking in stations" stuff that's under development, and I think the first 3 could be added relatively easily, simply as new ship/POS/outpost types and items.
Maybe in the next patch

There are already asteroid colonies in the game. You see them in missions and owned by NPC's it would be nice to make them available and usable by players. Please get this done now.

I am promoting this thread, again, to the first page.
Will be next on the agenda, once the POS remodeling issues are solved. One baby step at the time, and years worth of bumps.
