BRING BACK THE SCOPE!

I liked the Scope kind of gave you a nice....scope......over things.
No seriously it was a really necessary thing to tell those, who aren't involved in big PvP events, that there are events that are unfolding 'naturally', and to tell us about them in a really well written fashion. That there are and can be events and not only those that are organized by Polaris, plus it gave the game a really fresh breath of life.
But instead of gaining from this and roleplaying a press release or something, apparently (I don't know the details anymore than you) TTI went and ruined it. Might have been someone else but given recent history.....
BRING BACK THE SCOPE!!!

It rather sounds like someone threw their toys out of the pram, forgot that this is a game and threatened some sort of legal action.
Anyone taking bets on who that might have been?
Edit - I dunno how any player is supposed to "feel part" of Eve really. You know what goes on in your own little area and that's about it really

I'll sign it as well, as I definately think The Scope was a good read on the long journeys, as well as letting us mere mortals know what's going on in other regions of Eve than our own backyard. I can understand that Polaris are fed up getting accused of this and that, but a thing to note, when publishing info involving several parties, is that it would be a good idea to get both sides of the story if you cannot be there in person. As with all media, The Scope may have a slight bias towards on way of conducting yourself rather than an other, but if people can opensly see what this is, and judge for themselves as well, I do not perceive this to be a problem. It's a shame to see a number of people verbally attack good initiatives, when a far larger number appreciates it. This is unfortunately the way it is, and probably the way it will continue to be. You do not rally support for a cause until you see it attacked. I hope you will reconsider your decision, and think about what you can do to minimize the verbal attacks.

I think CCP/Hobbes does not acknowledge how much "The Scope" means to the playerbase except for those few. Or rather, one whiner that complained to CCP so that they closed it. No names but you all know who it is.
If you are trying to make players interact with the game enviroment you must inform players what is happening, and i think the ppl at "The Scope" did that very well. Of course some ppl are going to be upset with what is posted but you cant please them all now can you ? and i think this thread is showing that most players want it back.
CCP/Hobbes time to listen to the masses perhaps ?

I do not care if they are biased or play favorites - so do real life news stations. They are a news source covering player events, and that is something EVE badly needs.

2. The reason they stopped reporting on player actions was because they were getting negative feedback from.. you guessed it.. some of the playerbase

That's a good point Athule.
To be honest, I dind't see a single post on the forums complaining about the Scope.
I am sure there could have been one or two that I missed.
Now, its impossible to ignore the overwhelming playerbase support for the scope.
It was content.
It was fun.
It didn't hurt anything. (Except possibly a few thin-skinned peoples feelings).
So why is it gone?

As for ppl complaining that the Scope was "biased", they just have to learn that there is no "truth" out there - just different opinions. To believe anything else is just childish and naive.
So please bring back one of the best things seen in this game so far!

Criticism is an ever present characteristic of our nature. It is to be expected. And there are a few who will bang the drum of criticism VERY loudly. More often than not, they are a minority with their criticism founded for their own self-centered interests.
There is no way to satisfy each individual. To expect so is na´ve. But to cow tow to such a critical minority is unconscionable.
I urge you to reconsider the future of “The Scope”.

"First, if any opinion is compelled to silence, that opinion may, for aught we can certainly know, be true. To deny this is to assume our own infallibility.
Secondly, though the silenced opinion be an error, it may, and very commonly does, contain a portion of truth; and since the general or prevailing opinion on any object is rarely or never the whole truth, it is only by the collision of adverse opinions that the remainder of the truth has any chance of being supplied.
Thirdly, even if the received opinion be not only true, but the whole truth; unless it is suffered to be, and actually is, vigorously and earnestly contested, it will, by most of those who receive it, be held in the manner of a prejudice, with little comprehension or feeling of its rational grounds. And not only this, but, fourthly, the meaning of the doctrine itself will be in danger of being lost, or enfeebled, and deprived of its vital effect on the character and conduct: the dogma becoming a mere formal profession, inefficacious for good, but cumbering the ground, and preventing the growth of any real and heartfelt conviction, from reason or personal experience. ~ JS Mill, 'On Liberty'

Taken from the May 29th 2003 Devchat at EveGate . <Muaddid> Q: When will sentry gun and station and similar construction pods be introduced on the market? <Hellmar> we have various player owned entities already implemented. Sentry guns, power/shield generators, field repair mini-stations, mobile refineries. We are still working out the last tidbits of how they can be over taken, what is the penalty of having a sentry gun kill a n00b etc. and we have been a bit busy with plugging the holes that people have found.I would say that you'd start to see these items on the market in about 2-3 weeks, very expensive to begin with |

<rant> Sorry Athule, we'll sign the petition but you're DAMN right we'll flame. Is it me or does CCP instantly perform a New Labour everytime there is the merest hint of controversy?
Of course some reports will be heavily biased (just like certain segments of the media tow their party line) - since we are paying customers and are bound to a legal agreement (EULA), technically we're not children. So why do CCP continually treat us like children, removing threads or locking threads in an overly protective paternalistic fashion.
Let the community police our own threads! We're perfectly capable - after all, we must possess some literacy skills and be of sound mind to be able to READ and ACCEPT and be BOUND by the EULA, right?
Way to go CCP for trying to suffocate the player community and player dynamism. I hope that EVE-I.com will publish player reports in a non-partisan manner.
Consider my name added to the list. </rant>

The one useful thing that's come from this boards lately and they bury it.
jesus christ.
So, if I want to get something removed from this board all I have to do is raise a little "corporate favoritism" whine? Just how WEAK is Polaris? Is there even a single one of them with anything like backbone?
Okay, Polaris, let me educate you on the reality of the game, because it's obvious you are too busy cringing under a couple of whiners.
EVE IS BORING.
You have to mine for DAYS to be able to afford a ship, only to get it blown out from under you in 30 seconds of gate-camping. And when it DOES get blown up, it doesn't mean a damned thing. That's right, NOTHING. Just some loser whose teacher yelled at him who's going to take out his anger by ruining someone else's day. "Why did you pod me?" "Because I could." Yeah, that's GREAT gameplay.
Or some little "raid" goes on that maybe 50 out of the entire playerbase get to participate in. Oh yeah, baby. That fills me with confidence that I too will get to participate in a 30-second fight, the culmination of my Eve career! Earth to CCP: Your "live events" are weak and irrelevant. They lack meaning, they lack impact, and they lack interest. And nobody gets to participate! They might as well never exist.
So, FINALLY, the players make something happen that isn't deadly dull and boring. FINALLY there's a war for a REASON. Everything that makes us watch the History Channel is happening right here. The news is big, the news is relevant, and the players are doing exactly what CCP had hoped would happen. The reporting was well-written, and made me actually want to play the game.
The first good thing to happen in Eve, the first event worthy of coverage, the first event worthy of telling the outside world about...
And you fall silent on it, because of a complete lack of courage.
More education. No matter WHAT you do, someone out there is going to haul out a "favoritism" whine, because you've taught them that this is the way to make you jump through hoops. Do what you're told, or we'll cry "favoritism!" And you WILL do what you're told, and you'll do it NOW.
The online game biz is rough. You're going to get criticized. If you can't handle that, then get out of the way and admit that you don't have what it takes.
Oh, wait. You just did.
The Scope is now completely irrelevant, in the same way that the rest of the one-paragraph "carefully constructed backstory" is irrelevant. Scope is going to dry up and blow away, and nobody will care or notice.
Good going. Good decision. Yup, well worthy of respect.
Either restore Scope to what it was, or shut it down and go back to passing off one-paragraph zero-relevance "news flashes" as content.

I would add my signature to this as well; not to report on some player events simply because it is impossible to report on all player events is an absurd argument, indefensible either in an in-game or real life context. Does Polaris not run any events because they cannot run events for all players? Do real news services cease to report on events because they cannot report on everything happening in the entire world?

Look fella, Eve may be boring for some people, newbies and non-roleplayers mostly I'd say...
But a LOT of us really enjoy playing Eve.. it's a question of involvement and immersion.. I roleplay heavily and interact with other players.. If you don't enjoy mining or npc farming THEN WHY DO YOU DO IT???? Nobody is forced to do all that crap. You don't need a battleship.. And even if you do there's no need to be a grunt to get it. Plenty of ways to make cash and have fun at the same time.

The Scope, while doomed to be inflammatory to some, was by far and away the best read I've ever had on EVE and events therein.
Sorry to say it - but in a game like this, PLAYERS make the news, not "events". NPCs are just clay to fill in the gaps.

Got my vote - bring it back!
Biased or not (I happen to think not), they were intelligently written, informative pieces on the EVE universe.
They pierced that gloomy veil of inter-corp politics, shady goings on as well as major news events.
They were information for the masses and were the kind of thing that made new players feel that they new what was going on (and therefore encouraged them to stay). Please, please do bring them back.

theres something very important here that CCP has neglected to think of in their dancing around several issues... if this is going to be primarily player driven game there NEEDS..no...there HAS TO BE a NPC news service to get a relitively unbiased view of things to the masses. this is a requirement. PC news services do not have access to polaris's resources. therefor it only makes sence that they do something resembleing "the Scope"
please reinstate this nessisary function post haste as it only adds to the flavor, and fun of this game, which, honestly, untill it heated up was rather dry

The Scope is still here, although the purpose it serves is to keep the players informed about events and happenings related to the officially sanctioned events produced by CCP and the Aurora Project, the branch of Polaris that does events. Players had asked for a place where they could get news about our events and that's why The Scope was created.
The reason for disallowing The Scope to include player events, gossip and politics is that Polaris must remain neutral and not become involved with player happenings. That should be done by the players themselves.
I don't want to let too much out of the bag, but something much cooler is coming, an opportunity for fan/news sites to get a bit of inside scoop and for the players themselves to be able to send in news flashes that will not only be added to the Eve site, but also appear on the ingame bulletin boards.
We hope that this will quench your thirst for the news, rumors and gossip you love to read and allow more players to participate in the process. Keep an eye on the site. More information is coming in the next few days.

and any process whereby you decide whats good news to display and what isnt is exactly the same - open to bias and favouritism and censorship and contolled by polaris. Just you save time on not having to write it.
As such you should have stuck by The Scope because you are doing nothing different here except trying bo buy a way out of a PR disastor and fudge the issue.
Really - either you're going to be involved with news or you are not. There is no half-way house and "weather and weddings" won't cut it.

I VOTE for them back...
they might want to do 2 things...
Make 1 section of scope for player reporting... 2nd section for eve events etc...
that way they can be both different departments...
that would keep any idea about ccp's events in eve seperated from the player ones...
if people had a hard time and saying all that lame stuff... support Idea: QuickInfo an alternative to ShowInfo

If its because they have to remain neutral, then the events they stage should also be neutral. And are they that ?

If that's the final official position, I suppose I can't argue.
I can, however, disagree with the official position as emphatically as diplomacy allows.
It is because of Polaris' recognized neutrality that The Scope can safely observe and report events that would get most player-reporters shot to pieces. It is because we know Polaris must remain neutral that I trusted The Scope more than we would any purely player-run news source. I don't believe more than 50% of what I hear from any side in Venal. I believed a good 80% of The Scope. Getting that hard news made the game seem like it was fulfilling the promise I'd hoped it would when I first heard of it in the summer of 2000.
If I may be forgiven for seeming a bit accusatory, from where I sit as the average low-maintenance small corp player, Polaris spends so much time trying to avoid accruing any patina of partiality that I have yet to see them add anything constructive to the game beyond answering questions in the Help channel.
Stop nerfing yourselves out of fear. You were doing good work here.

/boggle
... With all due respect, this makes no bloody sense whatsoever.
* Polaris is supposed to 'remain neutral and not become involved', yet at the same time there's dedicated branch of Polaris whose sole function is to interact with the players and to get them involved in CCP-organized events.
* how is the nerfed Scope supposed to report about official events and not the player events, when thanks to the efforts of the Aurora branch of the Polaris team to get the players involved, the official events essentially become player happenings, due to the players' participation in them and --as stated both by the Aurora team and the CCP members-- the outcome of these official events being actually shaped by the players?..
* Further to the point, as apparently the special team is able to do their work of getting the players involved while 'remaining neutral and uninvolved' itself, why can't the same neutral and uninvolved team handle the simple reporting of player happenings?.. After all, the only difference between the 100% player happenings and the official events is, the official events were somewhat pre-planned by the Polaris team.
* Finally, what about the suggestion made here to separate the Scope team from Polaris... thus removing the need for strict neutrality yadda yadda yadda as the separate Scope would no longer tarnish the image of pink-lettered team?..
... gah; would /sign again but... whatever. way to drop the ball, guys... :/
edit: i see at least 350+ people in this thread supporting the idea to have the Scope restored in its original form; as --according to provided info-- the reason to change the profile was player complaints, and presuming those were even more numerous if the CCP decision remains unchanged... just curious now, how many of such complaints were made?..

For the record, as far as I can tell the execs at TTI have no knowledge of a complaint originating from within TTI on this issue. Conspiracy theorists will dispute this of course... but such is life
Sounds like the new functionality Pann described will be a good step forward though ...

>> * Polaris is supposed to 'remain neutral and not become involved', yet at the same time there's dedicated branch of Polaris whose sole function is to interact with the players and to get them involved in CCP-organized events. >>
I have to agree with that, by that argument no Polaris staff member should ever take part in an event as an actor. Let's say I was an actor and I decided I had 4 enemies one of which is a primary-character enemy. Do I attack him first taking tha chance at a bit of revenge? Do I not attack him, hoping to avoid the accusation that I've targetted for reasons outside the role but in so doing cut him from the event?
If Scope can't be associated with Polaris, just split them up - make Scope an NPC corp where the members have no special benefits at all.
As to the bulletins idea - yes, great and it will be much appreciated and it does sound really cool. BUT it is not the same as the scope articles. Are we now going to be subjected to hundreds of 40 word semi-literate 'adverts' about how Corp X (apologies if there is a Corp X :-) ) Ownz Corp Y? And assuming these are going to be filtered, what happens when people claim discrimination when their article doesn't appear?
I want to read full articles and stories, well written and integrated into the game and forums. Scope was half the story, player stuff on the bulletin boards is the other half. If I had to lose one half it would have to be the bulletins.
I would say that the only thing you need to do is guarantee the right of response to people who are mentioned in articles. Just like was done in the case of Ragnar's interview after the Venal one. That is all that is required.
One would hope that player opinion counts for a lot, so far almost all have supported Scope. Doesn't that mean anything at all?

You should have learnt by now that no matter what you do, "some" players will moan. Some players will take it as their mission to stop anything worthwhile.
I would much rather have an official view (even if its biased or not) on player events than none at all.
I've no idea what goes on in the majority of the eve universe because I don't have time to follow and read every post made. The scope provided a great way to read a few posts and obtain a general overview.
Reporting on just eve official events is pointless, we've already got the eve news for that and many discussions that will occur in the senate.
Also if a report is seen as biased then let people fight it out in the senate forums. You can generally read between the lines in the majority of threads.
I say bring back scope. An official "player" news network is greatly required. Rather than taking your ball home, listen to the critisms you get and try to improve, and simply discard any insults.
You'll soon find that the majority of people who post are those with something to complain about, players who are satisfied with things will not generally post to say well done. (Unless of course you stop doing it)

As far as I'm concerned, The Scope can tell everyone 'Drunkenmaster fondles hamsters in the back of his Osprey', and I'd still vote for them to stay. They have made a number of mistakes (mainly not asking the 'alledged' if what they are about to print is true (case in point: TTi giving pirates free BS's (where's mine?))) but I've not seen a news source that doesn't make mistakes.
My vote is in: Bring back the scope. .
