Ok, i will start by saying i have been playing eve since 2003, ive been around and really enjoyed playing this game, both pvp and mining mission running sides of it. The community on the most part has been fantastic, i have made some great friends and met some great enemies  Along the way thro pirating and pvp i have encountered smack talk, the usual annoyed pilot that you just blew up his ship with such a ship or you killed him while he was afk and how much he hates you (you know what im talking about), But today i experienced something that i must say shocked me, this was beyond a joke and really immature.
Now let me explain the situation to you all. Myself and two other corp mates of mine, one in a raven and the other in a ferox jump into a low sec system and see what looks like a camp of the locals, the raven pilot warps to a planet and a bc follows, he promply kills the bc and this follows in local:

Oh dont worry i have done, im just wondering if anyone else has experienced the same type of abuse. As i said im used to smack talk but this kind of talk is out of hand, this is a computer game and this kid is acting like its real life and i just wrecked his tri-cycle

My experiance has been pretty good so far, nothing that obscene, although I've been cursed out a bit more then I like out of game context which to me is a bit disruptive, but for the most part I'm a big boy I can handle being told to F off now and again.

Grief players neither care about storyline, the context of the game or any other in game thing short of power gaming and killing fools for the sheer enjoyment of hearing their frustration. I don't care for grief players but they do bring a challenge to the game and for that I add least halfway respect their presence.

Camping anywhere near high population zones is smarter than sitting somewhere you will only find a handful of people in one day. I remember someone telling us he PVPed in a Kestrel with an officer module fitted, unaware of it's value because he was a newbie.
On the subject of smacktalking: I've been smacked recently without provocation, the people who smacked me were just pubertal morons. It made me sad, because I realized that people like them may very well have confirmed people's prejudices about the 0.0 population and piracy. Also, the things they said were so horrible I wouldn't wish anyone to have to listen to that crap. A corp mate forced them to write an apology though, which I recieved shortly after (threats of war decs ftw).

Obscenities have no place in EVE.
Heckling in local, I'm prepared to tolerate.
The odd swear word when you lose a ship is fair enough. (Although that's not quite what the rules say, I'm not going to petition it :)).
Abuse of that kind though, is out of line. EVE seems to be mostly adult, but that doesn't change the fact that this is a game of all ages. Nasty stuff like that isn't needed, and spoils the game for almost all concerned. Especially on 'public' channels. (Again, I'm more tolerant in private ones, but appreciate that GMs might not be :)).
Petition it is the way to go, and ... well if it's a repeated offense, then EVE is better off without.
Edit: And for what it's worth, that's _not_ common.

Also, the things they said were so horrible I wouldn't wish anyone to have to listen to that crap. A corp mate forced them to write an apology though, which I recieved shortly after (threats of war decs ftw).
You know Grim you sound like a legit player but the problem is that your the exception not the rule. The large majority of pirates in this game fall into one of the three categories I mentioned. In fact to date I have never been killed by a legit player and I've been killed at least 15 times. Every single time I contact them to ask them hey how come you killed me I get a response like "Cause your a F** or cause your mama is a W****". No one has ever role-played, no one has ever told me.. Hey cause I'm a pirate!! . No respect at all, no in game context and absolutly no purpose other then simple grief, boredom or just being a play A hole. When I return to the system with a friend who might pose even the slightest challenge, while offering far better loot then I could, they run, always.
The point here is that Eve suffers from many of the problems associated with Full PvP games. For one it attracts a bad element of people (notice I didn't say players), just down right bad human beings. Secondly it brings out a lot of anger and frustration in people and until PvE games, they actually have a person they can vent to. Again PvP players tend to be immature and that's why in this game you can expect to get cursed out with all manner of profanity on a daily basis, immature people just don't have any self control. Third there is very little roleplaying or in game conversation, for the most part the theme of the game, storyline, the whole world as a whole is irrelevant to everyone, its simply about the mechanics. What is the best ship, best weapon, best skills to have to be able to have the biggest advantage over other players in a fight.
Besides piracy should be a very small part in this game, there is soo much that is possible with Corporations, Manufacturing system, mining.. etc.. yet Piracy is the focus of most of the guilds and they do very little else.

Such animals as the OP describe in this thread can be encountered mainly in low sec... AUNENEN is the closest zoo near empire space where you will find a full collection of such animals... from the nature of the quotes I'm pretty sure this was the regular aunenen animals you are referring to.
Petition it ... but frankly lets get real ... if there are idiots in RL you'll find them in Eve too... its not worth getting miffed over this ... ignoring them is the best thing you can do as most of these players seek recognition and acceptance one way or another ...

@ Kryss Darkdust; All times I got killed by pirates (or a pilot whom we where at war at) I seldome got an un-mature response from the person who killed or podded me. Quite polite now and then, and I had a normal convo with some pirates in the Oldman-Star system. Must have been my luck I guess.
Only time I had a guy yell and swear at me, was of my own fault; I accidently killed his ore-can.

I totally agree that Vulgarity like the OP mentioned is completetly unaccetable, but to be frank, cursing and vulgarity aren't acceptable in this game at all as far as I'm concerned, ever... Not trying to be overly sensitive here, but its a game and there is no age limit you never know if your cursing out a 40 year old man or a 13 year old kid. A few very public account cancellation would for the most part put a stop to this type of stuff.

Some people really don't have a clue what is appropriate. When I'm with my mates, we're all pretty foul-mouthed and abusive to each other, but you automatically tone it down depending on where you are. The same applies to Eve. You can say what you like in private channels like corp chat, but when it comes to public channels like Local, you have to show a little bit of respect for others who are just trying to have fun and play a game.
I will petition anyone who is genuinely abusive in a public channel. Either these people learn what is acceptable (how hard can it be?) or they get banned.

Instead give him a SmackRating (TM) based on his spelling & grammar, originality, offensiveness and number of times he desribes sex acts with your mother. Offer an in-depth analysis of where his smack could be improved, and offer some example scenarios for him to roleplay smacking you. With a little help, we can turn these guys into veritable SMACK GODS.

I called a guy a stupid b******d once, but that was simply because he put a medium nos on me and expected me to capitulate there and then and give him 15mil ISK. (I'd never been so offended as someone's noobishness before).
However, I never swear at people, and I've been killed dozens of times, and not killed a single person once. I prefer to take the mick out of them, slowly annoy them untill they cant stand me any more. God bless staying in stations, while playing with your other account to pass the time

I disagree. Too many people get away with too much these days because too many other people are willing to 'just ignore' it. Maybe it's too much hassle to do anything about it. Maybe they're just too frightened to challenge or report the behaviour in case there are reprisals. There're a lot of reasons why people 'don't want to get involved'. And each and every reason gives the antisocial/aggressive/obnoxious types one more reason why they think they can do whatever the h.. eck they like.
This is 'just a game', it's true. But this is a problem that exists in gameworlds and outside them in the real world. And, as the OP suggested, the abuse received from this kid, who had - as someone else has pointed out - committed an implicit act of aggression by following the OP in low-sec, is not acceptable. The OP's response to that act of aggression was entirely within the mechanics and the spirit of the game. Any attempt by the offender to hide behind "well, it's just a game" as a way to try to excuse this pitiful abuse should not cut any ice here.
However the OP and friend choose to deal with this is their choice - but 'ignore it' is an option I wouldn't recommend. |

It's not a surprise for him to be unhappy, but there is a great deal of difference between expressing that unhappiness, and the level of crudeness and abuse that we're talking about in this case.
After all, put it into context. Eve is just a game, and losing at it doesn't give you the right to behave that badly. Imagine if a footballer shouted these sort of things out in public - would the fact they had lost a match be any sort of excuse for it? Of course not.

Wow ok where to start, as i said i am used to smacktalk so i wasnt insulted and didnt really take it personally, i WAS shocked at the fact that someone was so immature and well.... yeah lol
Anyway he did get petitioned and i hope he does get banned, again as i said before smack talk doesnt bother me in general, and really i would ignore it but this went too far really to be ignored and i myself had no other choice but to report it.
As for telling his CEO, well his ceo was in local saying crap like"well what do you expect from teeny boppers ... they have sensitive ears" Anyway this thank you for the responses, was mainly after if other peopled have exp such vulgarity in eve. Thanks again

Actualy in WoW is much better because after you kill a guy, if you stick around and wait for him to get back only thing you see is "Aldon Valur Gos" or something like that
But after 7 years of playing MMOs with some sort of PvP, this is nothing new. The sad difference is that if you beat somebody at a game of chess or backgammon (in real life) he can't just insult you without expecting a incoming kick in the mouth while the anonimity of internet allow those kind of frustrated people to spit all this dirt out.

Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but this is a game with a large section of the website dedicated to backstory, a division devoted to creating and running RP storylines, a volunteer division dedicated to creating, running, and acting in RP events, and a MAGAZINE including both stories and in-character interviews. If you hate roleplaying so much, why don't you go play Halo 2 on XBox Live?

Exactly, I've been called a ***** on Blitzin Chess before - smack talk in the Library. Anyway, he won the game, I complained to the moderator and the game was handed to me, along with the ranking points .

Word for word what i was going to say. Anyone who thinks Role-playing is stupid has made a poor choice with Eve. This is in its heart first and foremost a role-playing game which is exactly why they added a Portrait and a place to write our your backstory.

I hate roleplaying, yes. I haven't read much of the backstory, because it's a load of old crap. All I know is all Minmatar look like Puff Daddy. Anyway I've been playing since Beta 6 as well and have never needed the fiction to enjoy it.
No, I don't like role-play Nerds much either. They need to get a grip and stop being so silly. Being in local with role-players is like being trapped on a bus with a load of born again Christians. PRAISE THE LORD!

When I stated playing and I first ventured into the fringe systems I, like every other newb encountered the grifers, a-holes, ect. I'm not talking about the pirates and the alliance gate camps that are trying to secure thier space. I'm talking about the pure griefers. I lost a few haulers and frigs/cruisers to them as I learned. But I did learn.
Now every month or so I take a solo pvp ship into a grifer area and kick the living crap out of them. They are usually low SP players and they scatter when someone actually fights back. The key is to pretend to be a newb, get into scramble range, then unload. I tend to not use BS or t2 ships because that scares them off.
The funny part is this. The griefers cry like babies when you blow em up and pod em. I mean they scream bloody murder. The poor newb sods don't scream half as bad when they are caught by the greifers. If I manage to get a true pirate they compliment me sometimes. The griefers usually curse and act immature to which I respond with a one line needle then completely ignore them.
The moral of the story is this. Train up, the go back and wreak havok. Its a ton of fun and I've paid them back multiples for what happened to me when I was younger.

I don't know you personally so I can't say this for sure, but I SUSPECT that you just don't have the ability to be comfortable in RP, so seeing RPers around reminds you about it and you don't like that, hence you respond by complaining about how much you hate RPers and how you think they're "nerds" and the like. If you just didn't find RP to be fun, I don't see why you would be so hateful about it...I mean I don't enjoy playing football games like Madden, but I don't complain about how much I hate people who play it.

I don't see how RP is any sillier than sitting in front of a computer spending countless hours working to get various items or defend various territories that don't exist at all.
Oh, and if being tied up and beaten (I rather prefer leather implements to wet leeks, but to each his own) gets you off, then how is it any different from a blowjob?

Roleplaying was originally created as a therapy I believe. All of us roleplay everyday. I'm no nerd, but certainly enjoy having a good'ole pen & paper RPG with former high school friends. It's fun, it reminds us of more innocent times, and it's a fully shared social time. Ans still I consider my life to be very successful in every aspect. No "nerd", puh-lease (at least with the sense you give that word)...
Associating roleplay with being a kid is wrong - period. Associating the absence of roleplay with being a grown-up makes me laugh.
Roleplaying is in your life, everyday, whether you want it or not.
Now, roleplaying a minnie out to crush evil amarriand slavers is another thing
But I will agree with a post above that says "EVE's success comes from roleplay" - alliances & player content is based on roleplaying. Of course we don't speak in character with every single line we type ingame, but a little never hurt anybody, heh?

Erm...sorry but that's still roleplaying. People don't need to be sitting around spouting Thee and thou and forsooth and the like to be roleplaying, especially not in a future-based MMORPG. I always get a bundle of kicks out of folks who play roleplaying games...and bash the roleplayers as wierdos. Roleplay is merely a form of escapism, and an mmorpg is the correct format for those of us who enjoy a bit of rp. As has been mentioned, archaic language is not a prerequisite of roleplay...the cool thing about Eve is that anything you do, any action you take is roleplay. In a persistent world where actions have consequences and characters have reputation, it's impossible to view it any other way.
Mac Knife, that's pretty shocking what you were subjected to. I've seen a lot of bad smack, but never anything like that. It crosses many lines, even if it were meant as a form of roleplay (unlikely) and would be considered "fighting words" where most people come from. Shameful that people hide behind the annonymity of an online game to spout such nonesense. Petition him, put him on block, and try to convince yourself that the majority of the playerbase are a lot more mature...and even those who lower themselves to the level of smacktalk won't go that far.
