Main reason: E3 actually opened like.. an hour ago.
All that the game sites have been spewing all week is pre-E3-hype. Mainly from the Big Company press events. Considering that nobody had seen CCPs stand until an hour ago, its a safe bet nobody could write about it yet.

TBH, don't think it was quite as good as EveNeverFades, but that's an incredibly high benchmark. For what it was - selling Eve as a balls-to-the-wall PvP experience - it's outstanding. And the sound was fine on my speakers :P
That said, some questions for Kieron:
1) How are the flight sequences handled? Does CCP have a way to script ship movements or is it all done by ridiculously-skilled manual operators?
2) On a similar note, is there special tools for the camera work or is it just done in-game with the controls available to players?
3) Whose idea was it to use UV crystals on the Baddon? Nobody engages at UV range these days...
PS the sequence with the Coercer is sweet as.

Okay watched it a few times, time for some constructive criticism. First off, give us the damn camera scripting already! Second, I prefer female voices over heavy smoker male voices. When I first heard it, it reminded me of the warcraft III trailer. It doesn't work here because nothing in the trailer was what i'd consider "epic". Another point, as someone who plays the game, it was kind of difficult to see what ships were being used.. could be because of the obscure camera angles but I think there was too little contrast with the background. Having a squad of ravens and cyclones mwding around = nonsensical.
Choice of "widescreen" format = win. Keep doing it. Choice of music was okay, I didn't mind it because the video was timed so well. But "beaty never fades" for example is something I would listen to even without the visuals, but not this track.
Major beef:
If you're going to show 40-50km long ships like the Titans, can you please for the love of god put a LOT of smaller ships next to them to show off the scale. Anyone looking at this in E3 would never guess that one of those is roughly ten times bigger than Babylon 5 :|
Also, visually, the doomsday and cynosural effects were probably the best part of the trailer.

QFT a million times over. The camera should have moved very slow in the titan shots and a bunch of frigs and cruisers should have been flying infront of them in formation. Now THAT would have been something..
Edit: by infront i mean between the titan and the camera, not flying ahed of the ship.

The audio engineer who mixed it should be publicly flogged and then sacked from his job. Listening on high-end speakers in my professional mastering studio it clearly showed a total screwup of the sound. Actually I can get really angry at collegues like this when they are trying to give our craft a bad reputation.

That isn't the new gfx engine... they are just changing models.
Not all the models are finished, that's why some were changed and some were not. -=====-

Haven't watched it yet (no speakers here at work) but been reading people's comments. I find it interesting that the post under the videos forum contains comments from people saying "awesome vid" and "best eve vid ever" w/out one negative comment, while this thread in the general discussion forum tends to lead the opposite way (reffering to sound/music comments). Do the harsh critics or people impossible to please tend to gather in the general discussions forum? Or maybe the people in the video forum have damaged their ears so much from watching so many eve music vids that they can't easily tell the difference between good and bad music?
I really did like the music track from EVE Never fades, but I don't care if the one they chose for this new e3 video isn't as good as (ENF) music. Doesn't have to be the best, just has to be good. Nice comments about the footage I see though, and interesting previews (Titan superweapons? ) of the video that I'll be looking forward to all day to dl.

Good job on the vid. It's right what you need on an event like E3 - fast-paced vid (a bit slow at the beginning, but the voice = \o/ ) and lotsa cool ships in it :)

YES. fireworks+ noise. personally id rather they just video a couple of titans duking it out and they get there via cyno field and bring a carrier because the drones exploding makes even more effects... and much base and loud music. maybe just have a dev yelling into the mic --------- Sig removed BEFORE the mods got to it bahaha -mazzilliu But we can play with it after. ~kieron that should be considered an exploit >[ -mazzilliu Exploit, what explot - Xorus |

Black Sun Empire - Arrakis (think its the 21st item in their playlist thingy)
is it just me or is the sound really dodgy when the kickdrum loop drops in - just as the EvE logo and that burning raven displays. seems badly distorted.

Color me impressed!!!
Was I the only one that thought the formation flying was the best part of the vid? (probably). Is this going to be a feature in Kali? Fleet formations are definately needed.
Sound did sorta suck....but the vid itself was great. Sound just needs to be remixed.

Edited by: Wrayeth on 10/05/2006 23:05:34 The video was very good, overall. The footage was excellent and more action-packed than EVE Never Fades.
However, I still find EVE Never Fades the better video for several reasons:
First, the intro. The voice just wasn't right. Moreover, it didn't seem to have the forcefulness to match its words - it sounded kind of sleepy. In addition, the intro was just too long, taking up something like a third of the vid. The next third was kind of a ramp-up, and the last third was where the vid really got going. The intro should've been, at most, one quarter of the length, and the real action at least half, IMHO.
Second, the music. I'm sorry - I just can't stand hardcore techno. The techno-pop that was used for EVE Never Fades wasn't something I'd listen to every day, but it was actually pretty good.
In any case, despite those two issues, the video was quite good. It had some really excellent camera shots. I especially liked the fleet of ravens - it added a kind of menacing, "going to war" feel. Oh, and the shots moving along the surface of the titans were excellent, as was the ragnarok wtfpwning everything with its superweapon (I still think Caldari should've gotten the ragnarok's superweapon animation, not the energy burst that they ended up with - Caldari are the missile race, after all!).

Very nice graphics. The spacecraft look more detailed than they are in the game - is this the graphics refresh we're looking at? Or Maya versions? (which would also explain the motion blur) I look forward to playing the game with ships looking like THAT.
I took a look at the WMV soundtrack in Vegas. Yes it is massively crushed once the loud music kicks in, but it's not flat-topped, i.e., some heavy limiting has been used to simply crush the dynamic range of the entire video. It is possible that a show like E3 was in mind when the soundtrack was made. Videos for E3 have to have very little dynamic range, otherwise you simply can't hear the quieter bits.
Anyone who complains about the sound in EVE videos should complain about the sound in the game first. It's one of the weakest aspects of the game. There are some cool sound-effects, but the mix is terrible (some sfx play just as loud at 50km as they do at 1km whereas other sounds are correctly attenuated), several sounds end with a click (some ordnance explosions), there are plenty of pops, blurts and glitches when you're running EVE in a window and are operating other windows/applications. There are tons of other bugs, e.g. if you have "load station environment" disabled, station audio blurts out for a split-second as you undock. I could go on. The surround panning is excellent though - very smooth and low-latency. I wish the other aspects of the sound engine were as polished. |

I liked EVE Never Fades much better.
Some of what I'm gonna say may seem mean, but I just really feel like being blunt.
The music, way over synthesized and repetitive like some cheap vampire gothic c-movie. It would have fit better (maybe) with more action on the screen.
Please learn sense of scale!!! The first carrier (or was it mothership) fly-by, very nice sense of scale, and very nicely done. But the two Deimos and the dread....no sense of scale, yes we know how big it is because we play the game. But to someone taking a fresh look at it...
And why five Ravens, and then five Brutixs, and then five Prophs, and then five Cyclones, and not a mix of frigates, destroyers, cruisers, BCs and Bs's and maybe even a dread??!?
Some of the Titan fly-bys were very nice. But like Rod said put a frigate or just any ship next to it.
Showing off the graphics a big +. Showing off EVE for the new masses, I think it could have been better.
So many in game effects that EVE Never Fades did and sooo much better. I'm thinking the energy distortion from the 'Apoc firing..ohh man that was sweet!
Personally I give it a 2 out of 5.

While impressive, it felt slightly anti-climactic. Ended very suddenly it seemed to me.

In all seriousness, whatever it was it was more techno than the song in EVE Never Fades, and my listening choice generally trends towards metal, so the song in the new vid was just too much for me.

Edited by: Aerendur Janks on 11/05/2006 03:14:58 I thought it was an excellent video. I played it many times over - very cool. Playing it at E3 with the audio cranked would definitely get people's attention - and that is probably the goal.
But I have also read that E3 will be monitoring audio levels - forcing vendors to stay below a certain decibal limits or have their power shutdown. I have also read that the dress code is in effect this year to try and curb the scantily clad booth babe craze of previous years - damn them!
Anywho... The voiceover sounds like it was done by Jeremy Irons (or someone who sounds just like him).

Too bad that animation is always lost on most people. IMHO when a ship hits 0 structure you should get treated to a random amount of the out of control animation before it explodes.
Currently you go out of control at like 20% structure and when you hit 0% you go boom.

Standard industry fare.
Part 1: Have an elf babble mindless drivel. Truely, utterly mindless drivel. People like that. It makes them feel smart for listening. And people hate orcs. Well, most people do. Elves ftw.
Part 2: Go ZOOOOOOM to suggest VROOOOOOM. Makes look everything fast. Even those battleships. Ah, the energy. The speed. Mind-blowing. (Got to use that trick in game...)

Dunno if it's just my headset. Using one of em Speed-Link Medusa 5.1 headsets.

That said, I liked it.
Even though the introduction was too long, the vid was too short, and some of the scenes didn't seem that purposeful. The bunch of cyclones (or was that a set of Command ships? They did seem to use Absolutions instead of Prophs) looked pretty nice, but the other BC scenes were a bit meh.
As for the sense of scale, I think it was conveyed pretty well. In the Moros scene, there's another 2 thoraxes flying behind the Moros, and the aft shot of the Minmatar... mothership? has three small ships next to it as well.
That said, the camerawork on the Erebus shot was a bit meh, the camera suddenly surges forward quite a bit, breaking the flow of the scene.

You would think they could take a hint from their own videos.
Similar ships flying together is a good thing. It is cool. It looks awesome. Add some incentive for people to fly like that instead of giant stupid groups of ships that dont look to be organized thought out or planned whatsoever.
I am not saying make it hard for people who have specialized in certain ships to fly together...just add incentives for people to fly racial ships together, or something of that sort. Give bonuses, perhaps small ones, but bonuses. Eve will never look like this or have this feeling unless something is done in this respect.
And to make videos that look like this is pretty much just a lie. Because this is not how the game works.

I didn't like it because it wasn't much like the game. Ships don't move that fast, nearly impposible to get turns like that and such. _____________________________________

I dont think any of it was cg.
When you are in game hold right click and move the camera around. And then while still holding right click, hold left click and zoom in and out.

Mind-bogglingly fast paced awesome video of uberness! Makes me really, really appreciate my twin 14 inch subs, I had about a dozen DVD's falling of the shelf the second time I ran that, and I broke my coffee mug
Excellent camera work, pity the video ended so soon. Loved the fleet of Sleipnir's (Cyclone's have reddish orange lights, not green), but why didn't they have any guns fitted?
Also, I want access to the dev server that they test the Abaddon on

I don't think I could pick a favorite between Never Fades and No Other Destiny. They were both awesome videos. I guess the only grip I have about No Other Destiny was that it was too short.
I don't know what you guys are talking about with the sound, the bass sounded great, rattled the walls, and made the lady next door pound on the wall because she was trying to sleep.

Originally by: DigitalCommunist Okay watched it a few times, time for some constructive criticism.
What Digi said. Kind of ruined by daft angles. The Titans should have had all the ships from there race. ie Caldari should of had 20 Frigs orbiting and being escourted by MOA's/BBs/Caracals and the BS's
Would of made a bigger impression and shown the scale of the Titans -----------------------------------------------

It's a bit short imo (2.5mins?) for an e3 trailer.. i mean come on this is E3 it's once a year. I also agree with some more of the posts.. it didn't really seem that epic. I loved the music though and it had it's good points.. 7.5/10 from me. =========================

Bleh pretty sure I figured out almost the ENTIRE movie was CG, save the very last little end part where they flash through a few in-game scenes. The reason? Well no icons, specially when some small ships were in the distance no little + on them you could actually see the ship. I really hope they would ajust ingame scaling like that so youy would see ships more often instead of always icons :)

umm ctrl-tab hides the whole UI and lets you do movie mode. Plus in overview settings you can remove the icons from ships also. ----- Geotech is recruiting! |

I've never seen ships fly like that. I think they were just showing off the new graphics engine. Unless they're planning on introducing some form of advanced space flight, including those twists and turns.

Love the Minmatar fighter drones (don't ask me to spell their name!). I've never had the chance to see them in-game, and they look just as great as I imagined..
The track's Arrakis by Black Sun Empire, in case anyone cares. Did they intentionally choose the music based on its SF reference overload?

Nah.
It's the updated scorp and executioner ship models they show. With some fancy DX9 stuff on top. Look at it. The only things that changed appear to be the fancier ship models. Everything else looks as before.
Same for all the screens here.
Pretty much the non-vista graphics update we're gonna get.
Technically, are there even working directx10 graphics cards yet? I didn't hear of any. If there aren't any, there currently can not be any real Vista footage. Since you obviously can't render it.
I'd also think that the Vista Engine likely isn't even near a presentable state right now? ________ Capship Overhaul |

I didn'lt care much for it. Half of it was some clown in a fakish Japanese accent (promoting the new bloodlines and going for the korean market I guess) waffling about some philosophy or other, then you yet to the action ( ravens flying like frigates??) and then theres a 10 second fadeout at the end. People are raving about 40% tops of the video. Sorry, not good enough for me. and as for the graphics, you could download some of the Homeworld 2 Point Defense systems' mod movies that could look more inpressive. Fancy effects will not pull in the punters anymore. You needed to show the good stuff in eve, and basicly saying "HEY, WE HAVE TITANS YOU CAN FLY(maybe a year and a half after subscribing...)!!!!" will not cut it.
Stick up 'Eve never Fades' and you will get more interest. That shows some real gameplay at least.

The bits with the titans were obviously a homage to TheKiller8's 'you know you want it'.
Edit: For those of you concerned that the video was CG, I can say with a fair degree of certainty that this film was neither hand-animated nor shot in RL. Semantics FTW. ---------- Sorry but that link contains nawty language. -wystler "Discussing moderation is not allowed" - Ivan K "Ranting is prohibited" - Teblin

I didnĘt like this vid at all, first off, why use a crappy dnb track when there is so much nice atmospheric progressive house out there?
There was nothing epic about it at all, no sense of a storyline. False marketing, the ships donĘt fly in formations in eve, thatĘs more or less impossible, even though I think it would attract new players that think it would look cool (which it certainly does). There was no way of understanding the size of the ships or what they are used for. Overall I think they should start doing vids that really do show the game, the player driven economics and all other stuff that makes this game unique, not just big booms and flashy cynofields.

Um...actually, we can already do that. Check the "advanced camera menu" box in your options menu. Try "set as interest" from the right-click menu on a ship in space or in the overview. As the angle and velocity between you and your point of interest changes, the perspective of the camera will, too. -Wrayeth
