{edit} Oh, silly me. Didn't say from when. Alpha 5-and-a-bit, aka "Medusa" (or was it "Phoenix"? Bloody ages ago, end of June/2002...) ;)

Quote: Hmm, how long was the Alpha?
alpha 6 and 7 lasted through july. some ppl from iceland were testing since may, though.
(and when I say july, I mean 14 months ago)
So Alpha 1 wasn't public? When did it become public testing? Alpha 6 or 7 or Beta 1?
Beta doesn't describe how buggy the game is, it's just what the devs want to call it.
Alpha started being public for people outside of Iceland around the end of June 2002, when there were about 200 (we reckon hand-picked) people let in, I seem to recall. That got ramped up to about 500 or so in the time between end of June and end of July, before a month's hiatus leading up to the Beta release at the end of August.
Alphas before 5 or 6 (don't remember the number from then) were open to Icelanders only - CCP had put an ad in a Rejkyavik (however that's spelled!) paper, I think, which attracted computer science students and gamers from over there, that would actually go to CCP HQ and test on-site.
Beta was when mass-mail-shots started, and that was right after 2002's ECTS, in the last couple days of August 2002.
The difference in the names comes from the fact that with Beta, the server hardware was what would come to be the actual Tranquility server cluster - I think until then it was running off servers in Iceland. I might mean Medusa -> Gemini instead of Alpha -> Beta, here - it wasn't clear.
Heh, here endeth the Eve Development History lesson ;)

Hi.
Been here since beta 6 still kicking
Lord Guerdo Biomass Cartel I mean c'mon, just think about it. What would make more sense then the 3 most hated alliances teaming up to lay waste to the people they all hate anyways? CA is already allied with PA, and TPS lies between the two alliances. Natural allies to be sure. But it's not just that, all but PA (and even some of them) have adopted a "stfu and die, or come and fight us, we don't give a **** what you think or do" philosophy, as well as a PvP Kill everyone not friend kind of mentality. These are the people in eve that kill or convert, the ones dedicated to the death of others, because history, circumstance, and the rest of eve have driven then to do so (except TPS, who are just cool ass pirates ). |

And I came like a month late but it was still completely empty when I first came on. I thought someone gave me the wrong server adress to play a trick on me while they were partying somewhere else, everyone was mean to me then
Oh, and there were also those two phases, like Ruby and emerald, though I think they were still medusa. I thought it would be part of a real constellation in the end.
And hi sigellious! so you do read these boards :D ____________________________________ Taggart wants YOU. Join TTi! *waves his hand in your face in the jedi way* |

Edited by: Khyle on 21/01/2004 13:47:03 End of 5 here. Was mad about the transition break back then :). I had only a few days in 5 as far as i remember.
Edit: and sarkos, the time directly after the autopilot arriving was my most boring time in eve . I was so used to fly myself that i couldnt stand watching the autopilot doing the work at first
