seriously "interStellar Kredits" as opposed to "InterStellar Credits"
ever since i saw it spelled out in the tutorial it's always bothered me. I know "ISK" looks better then "ISC" does but still... i even used the search bar and no explanation
Or is this a different-sort-of-type-of-english thing? I speak/write american english, do people spell it 'kredits' on the other side of the lake? ---------

Darn it, too many other people gave a correct response before me. Oh well, I'll give my snide remark anyway.
Because it's Krona, not Crona.

There are a number of 'Easter eggs' in EVE that come from Iceland or Icelandic history. ISK is just one of the more obvious.

Today it is IKR.

Also, if you think of star wars, the currency is "Credits"
Spelling Kredits with a "k" is an easy way to avoid any legal trouble.

Man, I wish soft C was replaced by S and hard C replaced by K. I get confused when I try to write a word like concise and wether I got the C and S mixed up. Bloody English. ___________________

Many minmatar ships have names from Nordic(is that right?) history.
To name some of the top of my head is Huginn and Muninn, Which are the Icelandic names for the 2 ravens Odin had.
That's about all I can think off, don't know if everybody did know this (us natives know this of course .

Edited by: Clementina on 27/05/2006 02:30:19 Here's a role play I made up right quick if you desire it. Sometime between now and the collapse of the Eve Gate Iceland became a world power. Well not so much as became a world power, but rather was able to sustain their standard of living during the great oil crunch due to their development of geothermal power and their to maintain a positive balance of trade throughout the economic crisis due to their selling of a certain service over the internet.
As they rose (or more accurately, as others fell) the Icelandic Republic was able to count for more in world affairs. They made the United Kingdom a protectorate at the conclusion of a series of naval wars. They were also instrumental in the construction of the land bridges. They facilitated commerce, which was then taxed by the International Seaways Division which they created after the naval wars. They decided they needed two land bridges. Other nations protested, but couldn't really do anything about it.
Because they became extremely wealthy due to their control of the landbridges in general (and due to their having two such bridges) Their currency, the IceLandic Kronar (ISK) because a reserve currency for every nation on earth. Some countries even ISKized their economies, dropping their own currencies and adopting the ISK as theirs. This was probably the legacy of the Icelandic nation. the initials ISK stood for stability and prosparity, and stood for it so strongly that it reputation survived the collapse of the Eve gate, survived the dark ages, and was exploited by Concord when they decided to create a new world wide currency, the InterSteller Credit, which they decided to label, the ISK.

I landed in Rejkyavik (sp) airport on my way to florida last year and noticed the ISK thing. I loudly proclaimed in the main concourse "Dammit, I have over a billion ISK at home, I should have brought it with me". Brought some strange looks from people. __________________________________

Originally by: Mishima Ginnungagap = Big hole in Norse Mythology where south and north / cold and hot met, or sum.
Actually Ginnungagap was the empty void wherein the entire world now lies.
And there are indeed a loooooot of reference to Icelandic and Nordic mythology in this game, mostly on the minmatar side. A few more examples:
Mjolnir (EM torpedo) is the hammer of Thor, the god of thunder. Ragnarok (minmatar titan) is the final battle between good and evil. Doomsday if you like. Fenrir (minmatar freighter) is the Fenris Wolf. Really big wolf! Naglfar (minmatar dreadnought) is the ship in which the residents of "hell" travels to battle the gods on Ragnarok. Nidhoggur (minmatar carrier) is a giant snake that encircles the world, lives mostly in the sea. Hel (minmatar mothership) is Hell. And at the same time, the name of the leader of Hel. Sleipnir (minmatar command cruiser) is Odin's 8-legged horse. Odin is the highest of the gods. Huginn (minmatar Recon cruiser) and Muninn (minmatar HAC) are ravens that Odin uses to spy on the world and find out what goes on here and there.
This is just the ships section (and a torpedo, oddly enough the Amarr one), I know there are lots of other things, places, modules, that refer to this great mythology, but does it really matter what things are called? As long as they work, right?

Before I knew that, I was working in Excel and found 'isk' amongst the list of cell format currencies available. As you can imagine I did something of a double-take...

No, Jormungandr is the name of the Midgard Serpent, or World Serpent as it's sometimes called.
Nidhoggur is a being, maybe a dragon, and it eats from one of the three roots of Yggdrasill, the World Tree.
(Though to be fair, some people think Nidhoggur and Jormungandr could be the same creature)
It's also worth mentioning that Hel, Jormungandr and Fenrir were the Children of Loki, God of mischief and Angrboda, a giantess (female giant).
Sorry, I just love norse mythology.

A lot of ship names have interesting meaning or origin. (For me the hardest was maller until I found out that is etymological near to miller.) ******************** Those without a tribe can only keep their word.
