This is why I love CCP, they're truly devoted to their fanbase instead of considering it a 'hostile entity that will reduce profits' bravo CCP. Bravo.

Edited by: Zatch on 02/10/2006 14:45:38 I'll post some pics of the Megathron this afternoon, or maybe while I'm in class.
Also for those of you that missed the post on the last page about it, these models were not created by us. We have permission from CCP to use the models and textures directly from the client, so long as the final mod gets their approval before being released, and we provide proper credits.
This is a bit of an odd request, but if anybody here knows somebody who flies a titan, I desparately need screenshots of the titan with all turrets mounted (so I know where the turrets sit on the model.) I imagine it would be faster for a super character on Chaos to grab screenies, but I believe that might be breaking some of the testers' rules. -----

I will see if I can find the screenshot. The Avatar has 3 Turrets on the back, where you would expect to see the boosters, and 3 on the "head". So I guess if it shoots, something exactly on top of the middle part of it, I assume the lasers go through the Titan itself. --- Slot 10 Akemons Modified 'Noble'Zet 5000 implant +8% Armour FREE |

The screen shots look great. Good to see it coming alone so well. But please, could you take the screen caps with AA on? It looks to too pretty to be ruined by jagged edges
Originally by: Johnny Twoshoe My dream come true. That Erebus seems a bit big, even for a Titan. But that's just me. Everything looks great so far.
The reason that the Titans look so big is because HW uses a smaller Field-of-View than EVE does. In EVE, the FOV is very wide, so you can see more of what is happening around you. The side affect of this is that depth perception is skewed (further away objects seem very small compared to their size close up) and the fish-eye distortion you get on objects at the edge of the screen. Homeworld's FOV isn't as wide as EVE's so you will get a better feel for the scale of the ships.
Remember that the models come directly from CCP, so they are the right size.
If the FOV setting is configurable, that might be something to try changing to give the mod more of an EVE feel.

Please note that some of the textures are not in their final versions (e.g. the titans.)
Screenshots of some of the super-expensive capital ships are needed for texture reference. I'll be able to fly a Moros and Thanatos soon on Tranq (and therefore on SISI, when it gets mirrored) but all of the other capships are unreachable by myself. -----

An actual reason to play the poorest part in the Homeworld franchise? And incorporating much of the EVE mechanics? Awesome!

And before anybody whines about it, yes those are Standard crystals. We're going to be using the 0% range modifier ammo for all T1 ships and weapons, to keep things simple and balanced. That's not the final word, though, as we may decide to change things around a bit. Selecting ammo types for each ship is too cumbersome, so global changes might be implemented via a branching research system that allows backtracking (so if you later decide that you prefer long-range weapons, you don't have to stick with your short-range gank ammo.) Just remember these are tentative, not certainties. :) -----

Why?
Fair play - awesome job guys - there's obviously a lot of hard work and love gone into this project, and I fully commend and appreciate that....
...but why?
If it was for Freespace or XWA where you could actually pilot a ship, fair enough, but what can you do in this mod that you can't do in proper EVE online?

in Homeworld, you can fiddle some **** and then jump 50 ravens across the map almost instantly
in Eve, you need a titan to do that.
now, i have homeworld, but still working on the titan...

Fair enough, but where's the satisfaction? EVE is built to be PvP from the ground up. Surely jumping 50 Ravens into a system would be much more fun if it guaranteed ruining some other, living person's day?

Well in Freespace you can't ruin somebody's day either.
The whole point of this mod is to give the player control of more than one ship, and to not worry about losing months or even years of ISK worth of assets. I guarantee it's still possible to have fun even if you're not worried sick about losing your expensive new dreadnought. -----

Edited by: TheDevilsJury on 07/10/2006 01:19:47 Edited by: TheDevilsJury on 07/10/2006 01:19:34 its an RTS. You can't compare an RTS to a MMO in terms of the pvp. Its soooo different. In MMOs like Eve you ruin someone's day. In an RTS you might ruin their day in a far less permanent way (as in "I'll get you next game !!!1!")
HW2 has multiplayer capability that supports mods as far as I know. Up to 8 (?) players. I'd be totally up for playing this mod when it comes out.
As far as long-range and short-range goes, why not make 2 versions of each main battleship at least (possibly more classes if they support it as well as the tier 2 battleships do). As in Pulse-Geddon & Sniper Geddon, Torp Raven & Cruise Raven, Auto-Pest and Sniper Pest, Blasterthron & Sniper Thron. Keep the models the same but make the guns obviously different when they fire (or the turrets themselves). Maybe even have more or less the same name, so they're hard to tell apart until you engage. That way it's like in eve when you don't know the enemy's fitting.
edit: just realized the geddon is a tier 1 BS... well.. you get the idea. Apoc then. ----------------------- sig below

The only reason I mentioned Freespace is that i've got: a) an awsome online space game that I love playing and b) a joystick gathering dust in the loft since the last time I played XWA c) adding something to our community that cannot currently be accomplished in-game.
If the mod team can replicate the combat dynamics of EVE, then it'll be an extremely useful tool for fleet commanders to formulate and test strategies against opposition.
However, the point I sort of f**ked up trying to make is that playing this mod would be like playing in Empire space - fun for a bit, but once you've got passed the AI that's it. Co-ordinating and organising a large scale assault on a player alliance, whilst a hell of a lot of hard work, is infinitely more rewarding (i.e. playing better and beating human opposition - hence the ruining other people's day bit - my bad )

And playing a 2v2 match with 70 plus ships per side is alot more fun considering the game lasts about 2 hours with no lag. And Homeworld mods are almost exclusively multiplayer as Singleplaye is a royal pain to program so your looking at all the games being against players.

Wouldn't you rather be in control of a single ship in a 140 man battle though? (70 per side) The chaos, the adrenaline, the killing - knowing each ship you down and each ship downed on your side had a real person controlling it?
I know I sound a bit psychotic, but being in the middle of this sort of firefight gets the heart racing like nothing else (in front of a pc at least ) I know MP Homeworld can be a lot of fun - the problem for me is that it seems a bit too detatched. Ordering 10 geddons into battle without any consequence sort of desensitises you to the thrill of taking your own BS into battle. Ships become merely non-faced units at your disposal, rather than each being captained by a real-life person.
This is what I find remarkable about EVE - you can have battles on the same scale as HW, but there is always a human or personal element about it. This is what lifts the game above such things like HW.
Let me repeat though - this mod team is doing a superb job. Anything that brings EVE to a wider audience has my vote.

Edited by: Zatch on 07/10/2006 04:00:15 I agree with all that you're saying. It's definitely more rewarding in EVE to, for example, master your fitting on a frigate/cruiser/battleship, than it is in HW2 to just build the particular ship. There is also more of a "team" feeling in EVE fleet battles because, after all, you are controlling only a fraction of your team's total force (or you're directing all of it as the FC.) So if you're looking to make an impact in the EVE world, accomplish something truly notable, etc... Then good ol' EVE cannot disappoint. If you're bored during downtime or you're frustrated with mining for money to buy a bigger ship, a gigantic albeit quick fleet battle might take the edge off a bit. And, as previously mentioned, the accuracy of the combat system may or may not make this mod a viable "strategic tool." I guess we'll see about that. :) -----

If it were X-wing Alliance, my Condor would be the size of a Corellian Corvette, and a Caracall would be the size of the small Calamari Cruiser.
Geddons and Apocs would be the size of a an Interdictor or Victory Class Star Destroyer, Dreads would be around Imperial Star Destroyer Mk II size, and Titans would be ISSD sized.
Your main ships would be the 4 fighter types, and maybe drones.
edit: Darksaber's graphics pack for XWA is pretty nice looking, altho XWA itself has stopped working for me lately.
