Ever wanted to have command of a fleet of Battleships without being caught in a shouting match over ventrilo? Ever wanted to have full command of a fleet without reliance upon other pilots, ISK, and other tricky variables? Now you can! We are currently developing a mod for Homeworld 2 to bring the races from EVE online into the game, with 2 planned campaigns from EVEs backstory. If interested, please take a look at http://hw2eved.proboards102.com/index.cgi and http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=94369
(note: before anyone comments on this, I have already recieved permission from kieron of CCP to create the mod)

Jokes aside, it will be a lot of work, but good luck. I will happily test if you want it
edit: out of interest, why don't you use the motherships (rather than the titans) as motherships?
then you can have a titan show up in the story and be WTFPWNy

Hush!
The sequal was actually quite nice. It lacked a little bit of the original story of HW 1 (especially the background tory of the different tribes in HW 1 was awesome), but from a gameplay aspect it was fine. If you know how the difficulty of the next mission was determined you are able to play it on easymode, though, but that wasn't exactly very different for HW 1, too.

I was reading some of your discussion there and it seems you want to re-create all ship models? You dont have to, there is a program called TriExporter, which can export all Eve ship models to 3DS format.
Well at least it claims to - I tried to view models in it only (it worked), but I never tried to open exported files in 3DS.
Hope it helps.

I suggest that you do research like the skills we have in eve.
For example, training up amarr frigate would be the equivalent of researching amarr fighters to access more fighters.
Researching ECM would open up the blackbird and scorpion.
etc. etc.

I've worked on some HW2 Mods, and its good to see that people are still interested in developing community content for this great franchise. A few things that I learned or really helped me with HW2 Modding:
Keep Active on the Relic community forums! There are some great smart people there, who love these games and have a truly in-exhaustable knowledge base. Read the old threads, post some new ones and keep looking.
While this is true for all MOD work, I found it especially true for HW2 Mods, for the love of god keep you're scope small. You've got a good ambitious goal, thats great, but keep you're sight short. I can speak best from the modeling side (what I do) keep say three projects, and just work on those, and see them through. Take some things with variation, a Minmatar Cruiser, a Caladri frigate and an Amarr Battleship, and FINISH them before you move on. This you have enough variation to keep you interested, but you can also work quickly, and knock task after task out. Its so easy to get overwhelmed when working in HW2 because of the scale, its important to keep it as small as you can.
This one specifically for modelers, keep you're geometry clean! Once again this is true for all game work, but because the HW2 engine uses some really interesting algorithms for LoD, light projection and texture application, wierd wierd things can happen if even one Tri aint what it should be.
Anyways the best of luck, Im keeping my eye on this one.

Edited by: Suze''Rain on 05/06/2006 03:04:21 if you need a 3d modeller with a good half decade industry experience, send me an evemail and with what sort of format/exporter and what polycount/textures you're looking at needing, and I will see about running off a batch of models for you for fun.
looking at the detail level on those samples you stuck up, I could probably run off one race's fleets (preferably caldari for ease of reference) over a day or three, not including textures, which would of course take more work.

Edited by: Zatch on 07/09/2006 21:44:32 Hi everybody, I realize this is a bump but the mod is still active and I figure it'd be stupid to start another thread. Anyways, I'm the lead scripter for the mod (I go by the name 'Zatch' on the Relic Boards, as well as our personal boards.) The reason I'm bumping this is because we're looking to get an official statement from a CCP employee regarding whether we are allowed to use their IP directly (specifically, extracting the models & textures from the client, but providing additional credit in the mod's readme & ingame credits that explicitly states we used the models/textures from the client) or if we should continue to model each ship from scratch. Anybody with contact information for one of the developers, please send me an EVE-mail (in case the devs/moderators here don't want their e-mail addresses viewable by the public) or if one of the devs/mods sees this, I would greatly appreciate a comment whether it's yea or nay or neither.
Just so you know this isn't a joke, here's the Relic Boards thread - http://forums.relicnews.com/showthread.php?t=94369
And the official mod boards (sorry it's ugly, I need to make us a logo to replace the existing one that somebody else made) - http://hw2eved.proboards102.com/index.cgi
Permission to extract the models, textures, sound effects, etc... will certainly help. It is not a necessity, but considering the sheer volume of information that constitutes the EVE experience, the benefits of a shortcut such as this (not only in saving time, but providing a final experience that more accurately represents EVE) are immediately apparent. So please allow some room for consideration, and you (the devs & PR folk) of course reserve the right shut us down if we do something naughty.
Awaiting your response; Sincerely, Zach "Zatch" W.

Please read before posting. :)
I'll summarize though:
* We have permission to create the mod (kieron sent our leader an e-mail granting permission.) * My last post was a request for permission to extract the models and textures from the client, instead of taking screenshots and recreating the models + textures from scratch.
Thus far we have the Caracal, Kestrel, Executioner, Hornet, and Hammerhead in the game. Some of them are fully rigged, but none have textures. All of the models we currently have in the game have been created from scratch, with screenshots as reference.
Screenies: Caracal (HW2) - linky Hammerhead (render) - linky (I know I mis-labeled it, I was tired when I modeled it.) Executioner (HW2) - linky Kestrels (HW2) - linky

So if we cut it down to size, I estimate it would only take about 30 minutes per ship once full rigging is taken into account, plus another 1.5-2 hours for all of the scripting (note that this includes weapons, damages, tons of tweaking, etc...) Not to mention the many hours we've already put into developing our conversion rules (meaning how we'll be simulating tanking, tracking, speeds, ranges, etc...)
The dread was an example of using TriExporter to convert the models found in the EVE client. It's an example of the quality we can achieve through the direct conversion process, as opposed to recreating everything from scratch (we have some great modellers who've done a very good job of mimicking the ingame models, but we don't have any active texturers.) Hopefully that image will sway some opinions, or at least inspire one of the devs to post a yea/nay. We're awaiting your response.
---
A little progress update: I'm currently working on geting the missile system working properly. EVE utilizes very fast missiles (3.75km/s base on a heavy missile, for example) whereas Homeworld 2 caps at around 250m/s for the built in missiles. Unfortunately it's not just a matter of changing the top speed on our new missiles, we also need to deal with the turning ability and, toughest of all, getting the missiles to actually hit a stationary target... Pathetic, I know, but that's what we're working on. :)

Even better would be that CCP implement the tactical view of Homeworld 2 to EVE . That would bring so much more to EVE warfare. They should make it for alliances who sofreighnity of space

Homeworld is at the top of my PC game franchise faves. (Although HW2 looked nicer, I actually preffered the gameplay in the first one.) More improtantly, I still play it, solo and MP, when I can't get onto EVE. My kids and I will be all over this if it gets out the door.

Could the guys making this please try to not make it all fubared like HW2 is?
One battlecruiser more than your opponent = you win = lame.
Having to have a fully diverse fleet would rule. Taking my Kestrel and crow squardons to hit theirs while my Moa and Eagles snipe their small ships, with the Cerberus and Drake ships pounding their midlevel ships, and my Ravens and Rocs hitting their bigger ships, and the Phoenix wtfpwning their capships (after the 30minute missile flight time).

And as an extension of the previous idea:
Research in industry should make it so that for each level (Gallente, for instance) that every research level you complete results in a larger, faster moving hauler.
That way, your harvesters can mine into a jetcan and the harvester can take more RUs back to the mothership/carrier/whatever as opposed to "having traffic congestion" as there is in HW2.

Today's job: setting up some of the basic build & research scripts. Also, hopefully I'll make some progress on the UI and actually get the other team members to vote on a name for the mod.
Speaking of which, any suggestions for a name?
In our private section of the forums I suggested: EVE: Dominion Days. The only rules for name submissions are that they cannot be the same as one of the EVE patches/updates, and they cannot be tied specifically to any single race. Remember that this mod takes place during the Gallente/Caldari and the Minmatar/Amarr wars, so anything hinting to that would be nice (serious suggestion only please.) Also, EVE: Attack of the Pink Dreads is, unfortunately, out of the question.

Edited by: Zatch on 25/09/2006 14:00:35 Good news! We've been granted permission to convert the models directly from the EVE client. There are, of course, a few conditions: the final version of the mod must be approved by the developers for release, in order to ensure that it is in line with their expectations (nobody wants this to be a disappointment, I'm sure you'll all understand) and the devs reserve the right to shut down the mod if, at any point, we've stepped out of line. As I mentioned in a previous post, I expected these conditions, so it is not in any way an unpleasant surprise or a hindrance on our progress (we've been operating under this mindset anyways.)
So there you have it, expect to see some screenshots very soonÖ.
P.S. Thank you Oveur. :D -----

Also for those of you that missed the post on the last page about it, these models were not created by us. We have permission from CCP to use the models and textures directly from the client, so long as the final mod gets their approval before being released, and we provide proper credits.
This is a bit of an odd request, but if anybody here knows somebody who flies a titan, I desparately need screenshots of the titan with all turrets mounted (so I know where the turrets sit on the model.) I imagine it would be faster for a super character on Chaos to grab screenies, but I believe that might be breaking some of the testers' rules. -----

I will see if I can find the screenshot. The Avatar has 3 Turrets on the back, where you would expect to see the boosters, and 3 on the "head". The screen shots look great. Good to see it coming alone so well. But please, could you take the screen caps with AA on? It looks to too pretty to be ruined by jagged edges
Originally by: Johnny Twoshoe My dream come true. That Erebus seems a bit big, even for a Titan. But that's just me. Everything looks great so far.
The reason that the Titans look so big is because HW uses a smaller Field-of-View than EVE does. In EVE, the FOV is very wide, so you can see more of what is happening around you. The side affect of this is that depth perception is skewed (further away objects seem very small compared to their size close up) and the fish-eye distortion you get on objects at the edge of the screen. Homeworld's FOV isn't as wide as EVE's so you will get a better feel for the scale of the ships.
Remember that the models come directly from CCP, so they are the right size.
If the FOV setting is configurable, that might be something to try changing to give the mod more of an EVE feel.

Please note that some of the textures are not in their final versions (e.g. the titans.)
Screenshots of some of the super-expensive capital ships are needed for texture reference. I'll be able to fly a Moros and Thanatos soon on Tranq (and therefore on SISI, when it gets mirrored) but all of the other capships are unreachable by myself. -----

And before anybody whines about it, yes those are Standard crystals. We're going to be using the 0% range modifier ammo for all T1 ships and weapons, to keep things simple and balanced. That's not the final word, though, as we may decide to change things around a bit. Selecting ammo types for each ship is too cumbersome, so global changes might be implemented via a branching research system that allows backtracking (so if you later decide that you prefer long-range weapons, you don't have to stick with your short-range gank ammo.) Just remember these are tentative, not certainties. :) -----

Why?
Fair play - awesome job guys - there's obviously a lot of hard work and love gone into this project, and I fully commend and appreciate that....
...but why?
If it was for Freespace or XWA where you could actually pilot a ship, fair enough, but what can you do in this mod that you can't do in proper EVE online?

in Homeworld, you can fiddle some **** and then jump 50 ravens across the map almost instantly
in Eve, you need a titan to do that.
now, i have homeworld, but still working on the titan...

Fair enough, but where's the satisfaction? EVE is built to be PvP from the ground up. Surely jumping 50 Ravens into a system would be much more fun if it guaranteed ruining some other, living person's day?

Well in Freespace you can't ruin somebody's day either.
The whole point of this mod is to give the player control of more than one ship, and to not worry about losing months or even years of ISK worth of assets. I guarantee it's still possible to have fun even if you're not worried sick about losing your expensive new dreadnought. -----

Edited by: TheDevilsJury on 07/10/2006 01:19:47 Edited by: TheDevilsJury on 07/10/2006 01:19:34 its an RTS. You can't compare an RTS to a MMO in terms of the pvp. Its soooo different. In MMOs like Eve you ruin someone's day. In an RTS you might ruin their day in a far less permanent way (as in "I'll get you next game !!!1!")
HW2 has multiplayer capability that supports mods as far as I know. Up to 8 (?) players. I'd be totally up for playing this mod when it comes out.
As far as long-range and short-range goes, why not make 2 versions of each main battleship at least (possibly more classes if they support it as well as the tier 2 battleships do). As in Pulse-Geddon & Sniper Geddon, Torp Raven & Cruise Raven, Auto-Pest and Sniper Pest, Blasterthron & Sniper Thron. Keep the models the same but make the guns obviously different when they fire (or the turrets themselves). Maybe even have more or less the same name, so they're hard to tell apart until you engage. That way it's like in eve when you don't know the enemy's fitting.
edit: just realized the geddon is a tier 1 BS... well.. you get the idea. Apoc then. ----------------------- sig below

The only reason I mentioned Freespace is that i've got: a) an awsome online space game that I love playing and b) a joystick gathering dust in the loft since the last time I played XWA c) adding something to our community that cannot currently be accomplished in-game.
If the mod team can replicate the combat dynamics of EVE, then it'll be an extremely useful tool for fleet commanders to formulate and test strategies against opposition.
However, the point I sort of f**ked up trying to make is that playing this mod would be like playing in Empire space - fun for a bit, but once you've got passed the AI that's it. Co-ordinating and organising a large scale assault on a player alliance, whilst a hell of a lot of hard work, is infinitely more rewarding (i.e. playing better and beating human opposition - hence the ruining other people's day bit - my bad )

And playing a 2v2 match with 70 plus ships per side is alot more fun considering the game lasts about 2 hours with no lag. And Homeworld mods are almost exclusively multiplayer as Singleplaye is a royal pain to program so your looking at all the games being against players.

Wouldn't you rather be in control of a single ship in a 140 man battle though? (70 per side) The chaos, the adrenaline, the killing - knowing each ship you down and each ship downed on your side had a real person controlling it?
I know I sound a bit psychotic, but being in the middle of this sort of firefight gets the heart racing like nothing else (in front of a pc at least ) I know MP Homeworld can be a lot of fun - the problem for me is that it seems a bit too detatched. Ordering 10 geddons into battle without any consequence sort of desensitises you to the thrill of taking your own BS into battle. Ships become merely non-faced units at your disposal, rather than each being captained by a real-life person.
This is what I find remarkable about EVE - you can have battles on the same scale as HW, but there is always a human or personal element about it. This is what lifts the game above such things like HW.
Let me repeat though - this mod team is doing a superb job. Anything that brings EVE to a wider audience has my vote.

Edited by: Zatch on 07/10/2006 04:00:15 I agree with all that you're saying. It's definitely more rewarding in EVE to, for example, master your fitting on a frigate/cruiser/battleship, than it is in HW2 to just build the particular ship. There is also more of a "team" feeling in EVE fleet battles because, after all, you are controlling only a fraction of your team's total force (or you're directing all of it as the FC.) So if you're looking to make an impact in the EVE world, accomplish something truly notable, etc... Then good ol' EVE cannot disappoint. If you're bored during downtime or you're frustrated with mining for money to buy a bigger ship, a gigantic albeit quick fleet battle might take the edge off a bit. And, as previously mentioned, the accuracy of the combat system may or may not make this mod a viable "strategic tool." I guess we'll see about that. :) -----

If it were X-wing Alliance, my Condor would be the size of a Corellian Corvette, and a Caracall would be the size of the small Calamari Cruiser.
Geddons and Apocs would be the size of a an Interdictor or Victory Class Star Destroyer, Dreads would be around Imperial Star Destroyer Mk II size, and Titans would be ISSD sized.
Your main ships would be the 4 fighter types, and maybe drones.
edit: Darksaber's graphics pack for XWA is pretty nice looking, altho XWA itself has stopped working for me lately.

Edited by: Zatch on 09/10/2006 20:23:45 Yep, all of the turrets will track like they do in EVE except in HW2 they have a visible maximum tracking speed (if a target is moving too fast, the turrets may not be able to aim properly, which is the way it should be.)
Also I'd like to point out again that all of the textured models were extracted from the client, our modellers created an Executioner, Punisher, Caracal, Kestrel, and a few others but we never got around to texturing them. And yes, we do have permission from CCP as stated a few pages back (with a more detailed explanation of course.)
And here's another screenshot of the geddon that shows the turrets pointing at their target: http://img76.imageshack.us/img76/4866/ss00047mk4.jpg
Note that they're not all missing the mothership, they're shooting the other geddons behind the MS. ;-) -----

Edit: And just so you all know I'm not colorblind, this is a chunk of the Thanatos texture: linky
The color is much different ingame because of the map lighting. When we start creating custom maps for the mod, we'll have a little more variation in the lighting colors (other than the default HW2 orange orange ORANGE EVERYWHERE color scheme.) The Erebus appears pinkish for the same reason. -----

I have classes to attend in about 7 hours so I need to get some sleep. I hope to have the textures finished as well as the guns mounted some time Monday night. Would 3x Dual Light Pulse Laser Is be reasonable, or is there a more popular setup? I don't fly Amarrian ships often so I'm no expert.
Edit: Also those prongs extending backwards from the bottom of the ship's nose need to be fixed, that'll be done with the rest of the final texture-tweaking work. -----

I was afraid they wont present themselves good in HW, seeing as its completely different engine. But frack me, they look just like in EVE... hell, they look better than that! Glad you managed to get proper specular in HW.
I think the Thanatos texture actually seems to be better in HW than in EVE... somehow EVE engine makes it look very low quality. |

I think (allthough im probbly wrong) that the programs to make modles for both the game are the same. Im not an expert though. I would guess this is why they look just asgood in both.

I was reffering to textures and lightning. If you remember unmodified homeworld, there werent any specular for example (or at least it was so toned down that it was hard to notice), while many, if not all, EVE ships have specular maps. I guess lightning implementation in EVE is also different.
If you look at stock homeworld ships, their textures are more... cartoonish, for a lack of better word. Sharp lines, saturated colors, clean surfaces, clearly defined details. EVE ships have much more... well, realistic textures. Furnished or worn out metal, minmatar junk, you name it

Edited by: Zatch on 17/10/2006 01:41:03 Maya is used for exporting the ships in the proper format, but that has nothing to do with the textures. The textures we've extracted from the EVE client come with 4 channels: Red, Green, Blue, and Alpha. Now the Alpha channel seems to be used for masking out which sections of the texture will have one of the special EVE shaders applied, whether it's a shiny metallic shader or a bright glowing bit. This is the first time I've ever worked with shaders so I'm learning as I go along, but I do at least know how to use Photoshop to play with the base textures.
The textures that we extract directly from the client do not look like what you see in the game, because of all the shaders and lighting effects. That's why I was asking for screenshots of the capital ships earlier, I can't fly them so I can't see what they actually look like on test, and the number of screenshots already out there is sadly very low for some of the ships (especially Caldari capships.) -----

As mentioned before we aren't remodelling the ships from scratch any more, we're extracting them from the client. Most of the work lies with rigging the models, adapting the textures to the HW2 engine, and loads of scripting. -----

Edited by: Zatch on 05/11/2006 11:20:11 Hello again fellow EVE and HW2 fans, I don't have new screenshots for you yet but I would like some input on our mod name. On the Relic forums a user proposed "EVE: The Babylon Wars" which I took a liking to because it fits with the biblically-influenced EVE update titles. So I'd like a vote, yea or nay for the mod's title being EVE: The Babylon Wars. If you have a serious suggestion that fits with the naming scheme for the official EVE updates, and you don't like "The Babylon Wars," please post it here. I've had to make a judgment call and will only accept names that are chronologically suitable and have some sort of biblical connection (I'm no religious zealot, I just like the idea of having this mod named in a manner similar to EVE proper.)
Remember that the mod's campaign will take place during the Minmatar/Amarr and Gallente/Caldari wars. That means pre-Exodus.
Also I'd like to point out that there is one huge inconsistency with the EVE storyline that, hopefully, won't bother too many of you: we will be including titans, motherships, carriers, et. al. Note however that they may not be necessary for the campaign game, but they will definitely be included in skirmishes and multiplayer battles. -----

I like EVE: Tactics.
First Genesis is nixed, and Combat Evolved is too much of a stab at "Halo: Combat Evolved," Oracle is nixed.
Anarchy is a possibility, Odyssey is a possibility, I like the Ragnarok vibe but it might not fit with the actual storyline, Second Generation sounds a little too much like Second Genesis (which is the "event" that took place at the beginning of the EVE storyline, basically.)
So from the recent suggestions I'm limiting it to these options:
EVE: Tactics EVE: Anarchy EVE: Odyssey EVE: Ragnarok
And @sarabando: Minmatar ships will probably be put in the game last because they need to be retextured. Gallente have the most ships in game out of any race though, with the Megathron, Navitas, Tristan, Thanatos, and Erebus already in. -----

Sorry I forgot to turn on anti-aliasing for that pic, I'll have it on when I take a screenshot of the fully armed and operational Incursus. ;)
Also I'm getting much faster at adapting the textures and models for HW2 (the Incursus went from the EVE client to HW2 in about 40 minutes, without guns.) It takes an additional hour or so to collect all of the gun parts, assemble them, and rig them so they animate properly, which is why you might be seeing several ships without guns (I assure you I'm still putting the guns on, just so eager to share screenies.) -----

A purely out-of-interest question, how are you putting combat drones into the game? Will they spawn as new units, or act more like the marine pods (only doing actual damage) or.....er.....well, whatever?

Edited by: Zatch on 07/11/2006 19:54:30 I can't provide a timeframe yet because I'm just handling the models, textures, and ship/weapon scripting. Our campaign scripters haven't shown anything yet and our UI scripter (who is also our music guy) is pretty busy with other projects it seems.
As for a progress %, I'll give a rough breakdown:
Campaign: 0% UI: 0% Ships and Weapons: * Minmatar: 0% * Caldari: 5% * Gallente: 25% * Amarr: 10%
Progress % doesn't include balancing, since that will be handled when everything is already in the game (balancing on paper is a good general guideline, but practical balancing can't be done until all factors are prepared for testing.)
Also it's hard for me to give a timeframe even for the things that I'm taking care of, because I have schoolwork to attend to on an irregular basis. -----

Edited by: Zatch on 09/11/2006 08:15:34 Here's an anti-aliased 1680x1050 screenshot of the Incursus with all 3 light neutron blasters fitted (thus 6 hardpoints.) Linky!
I'll be spending the rest of the night working on the ship families and weapon penetration values (simulating EVE resists.) For those of you who are skeptical about whether it is possible to implement EVE-style resists or not, I'll explain my process:
Tech 1 Gallente ships are typically armor-tankers, we need to make this generalization because it reduces lag by reducing the number of ship families we have. The basic armor resist layout for a Tech 1 Gallente ship's armor without hardeners is: 60% EM -- 10% Explosive -- 35% Kinetic -- 35% Thermal.
In HW2 we are restricted to a single "penetration" value based on the target's armor class, so we can't do a damage-type specific resist value. However, we can perfectly simulate multiple resists with a single penetration value as follows:
Using Small Lead Charges in a Light Neutron Blaster I
Raw Damage: 3.5 * 5 Kinetic + 3.5 * 3 Thermal = 28 Total Raw Damage
Resist-corrected Damage: 5 Kin damage * 0.65 (from 35% Kinetic resist) = 3.25 Kin 3 Therm damage * 0.65 = 1.95 Therm Total = 3.25 + 1.95 = 5.2 Total base damage. Base * 3.5 = 18.2 Total Resisted Damage
Penetration = (Total Resisted Damage) / (Total Raw Damage) Penetration = 18.2 / 28 = 0.65 -----

I didn't combine the Erebus's base texture with the tiled glow texture that creates those little green specks all over the ship, until tonight. So here for your visual enjoyment is the Erebus: link (1680x1050 @ 8xFSAA)
Just so you can see how we've progressed, here's a screenshot I took about 1 month ago of the Erebus before fixing the colors, adding the glowmaps, and changing the HW2 shaders to give it that nice metallic shine: Old pic -----

well .. i have to say - after HW HW:C was quite a letdown ... battleships chaining through frigs anyone?
can't really comment about HW 2 as i only played it with the HW2 PDS mod .. besides of the ******* great lag caused by a gazillion of bullets and missiles in this mod it was great.
btw - is this HW2 EVE mod using a dynamic fighter script or the standard script for formations?? ___________________

Motherships and Carriers will build fighters and might be able to construct frigates/destroyers on-site, and Titans will have a large ship-hold for rapid deployment of larger forces (Titans will probably be able to jump across most of a map, bypassing the stargates that would normally slow down your fleets and expose them to ambushes.) Constructing a second POS may be possible, not sure yet.
As for purchasing HW2, there are two popular online options: Amazon.com Outpost.com Or you could try Fry's (the physical store,) Circuit City, etc... I'm sure with a little bit of shopping around you can find it for $5 in a bargain bin somewhere. The less money you give to Vivendi, the better. ;)
Also I need votes on which of these two names to pick (no longer accepting suggestions, we had a huge list and we sifted through it to land on these two) --
EVE: Fall of Man EVE: Dark Wars

Just a heads up: we're still alive here although progress has been very slow over the last month. Since the last time I posted, I've modified the FOV to be closer to what we see in EVE (a quick hack, but I hadn't bothered to figure out exactly what the FOV is in EVE until now,) and I mounted 5 out of 10 guns (and none of the 2 missile launchers yet) on the Ferox. Note that it is 10 because there are 5 on top, 5 on bottom. Don't worry yourselves about the balancing issue this presents, we're working on it. ;)
Anyways, here's a screenshot of the 5 guns on top of the Ferox: linky
I've created a new messageboard for the mod, the address is http://hw2evemod.proboards82.com/index.cgi The board is still under construction but I suggest posting there instead of on the old messageboard. ----- MLCalc Creator HW2/EVE Mod Team Leader |

That said, I'm making custom attack scripts for all of the ships, and I'll take a look at the Dynamic Fighters Mod to see what it was like. IIRC it involved a simple toggle in one of the scripts. ----- MLCalc Creator HW2/EVE Mod Team Leader |

Since it is one of the few models I am unable to extract from the client, I modeled the Dual 1000mm Railgun Is tonight, here are the results: Image
I haven't applied the texture or, more importantly, tweaked the model side-by-side with a reference image (I just eyeballed this one) so it isn't quite done, but it's not far off. After this one is done, I have 5 more capital guns to model (2 for Amarr, 2 for Minmatar, 1 for Gallente.) awsome work
just a question regarding the performance of the hw2 engine. with a maxed out fleet in hw2 game would run sluggish special on multiplayer, other mods have the same problem like star wars rebellion
have you had a chance to test the performance? performance is the weak side of the hw2 engine imo

Edited by: Zatch on 06/02/2007 15:47:46 Edited by: Zatch on 06/02/2007 15:45:06 The EVE ships are more demanding in terms of poly count, texture size, and the huge number of animated turrets, but with LOD optimizations as well as effect file optimizations, the performance should be quite decent with large fleets moving around.
Many mods use the stock HW2 effects, and most of the stock HW2 effects have some terrible performance issues (I think the attack bomber's little blue bombs have an array in the FX file that is 40 or 50 items long, to create a barely-noticeable width pulsing effect; removing that array allowed me to stick several hundred of those little bombs on the screen at once with no performance issues.) I'm making the effects from scratch though, and performance will be an important part of the process.
Edit: Forgot to mention that I'm working on the Ion Siege Blasters at the moment, here it is thus far: screenshot. The texture mapping isn't done yet and, when it is, I'll modify the coloring so it looks more like what we see in EVE. I've also managed to add turrets to the Moros as subsystems, so it is very easy for me to swap between the two turret types (which will be buildable ingame once I'm done with the blasters.)
I also modified the Dual 1000mm Railguns to look more like they do in EVE, here they are on the moros in HW2: screenshot ----- MLCalc Creator HW2/EVE Mod Team Leader |

Today I've got a real treat for you guys, I spent all day working on optimizing the shaders (to improve performance) and even modifying their appearance ingame, the results are:
1) A working glass shader with specular highlights and no more depth buffering issues, 2) A roughly 60% increase in shader efficiency, 3) More intense glowing bits, 4) And most importantly, the ability to add transparent parts to any ship with ease.

A variety of short and long range ships will be included, and they will orbit or align to their targets as appropriate. At the moment, only capital ships align to their target: this is where dreadnoughts will turn at a 20 degree angle facing the target so that the capital sized guns can fire without clipping through each other. Also the capital ships never orbit their target because of their slow gun tracking.
I'm not sure if I've mentioned this before but I have decided to tweak the base speeds of the different ship classes. For example, frigates get a 100% boost to their base speed, destroyers get a 50% boost, etc... This gives the player a reason to build frigates (fast tracking, high speed ships) as opposed to destroyers (fast tracking guns, but lower speed and acceleration,) although they both have their uses. This also keeps the gameplay from feeling too slow, since the base speeds of ships in EVE are, by default, not actually all that different (between tech 1 ships) until afterburners and MWDs are included. Since in the mod we will not allow the player to "fit" an AB/MWD, we compensate by applying a constant speed boost. :) ----- MLCalc Creator HW2/EVE Mod Team Leader |

Small update: I've been working on the Navitas, the Gallentean mining frigate, so that I may begin to put the real game mechanics in place (resourcing, building, etc...) I chose to create a brand new model for the mining lasers, to get around the problem of trying to get animated turrets to track an asteroid (which they cannot fire at, since it is a resource) and then have an effect come out too. Instead, I have these "mining pods" (which I created) fitted, from which a laser effect will emit if while the ship is resourcing (or, if that isn't possible, a generic vacuum sort-of effect, the reverse of a rapid air exhaust in space.)

Edit: I have also toned down the glow layer on the Thanatos. After the most recent shader modification, glow maps became more intense, so I needed to go back and tweak any ship with a glow map featuring more than just point lights (e.g. the Thanatos has four docking bays that are glowing, not just little lights sprinkled all over the ship.) ----- MLCalc Creator HW2/EVE Mod Team Leader |

Alright I know you're all tired of hearing about it, but I'm not happy with the mod's name. I'd like to choose between "EVE: Fleet Command" and "EVE: Ascension." Ready? Vote!
PS I'm making a new thread once the final name has been chosen. I need to have control over the first post, and I don't have that in this thread. Thanks again for all of your support, I look forward to teasing you all with more screenshots soon! ----- MLCalc Creator HW2/EVE Mod Team Leader |

Ah... sorry. My mistake. Very cool then. But will you then be removing the HW2's ability to move via thrusters or warp?
Oh and... why not EvE: Days of Darkness <--- as per the ccg

Thrusters are a necessity, without them the ships can't move. :)
As for warping, I'm still sort of on the fence about whether or not I'll allow smaller ships to warp or not. The name has already been decided, and please use the new thread for future comments/questions/suggestions. ----- MLCalc Creator HW2/EVE Mod Team Leader |
