With the co-operation of EVE Radio, CCP wants to take the Alliance Championships to the next level, streaming the fights, interviews, news and information straight to your desktop. That's right, we want to be able to televise the Championships live and in real-time to you.
The question we have for the community is this, would you rather pay for a high quality stream of EveTV, or would you rather have a free, low-quality stream of the sights and sounds of the Championships?
You can read more about EveTV in LeMonde's Alliance Tournaments and EveTV blog.

Yeh, I agree on free streaming....but tbh, i'd be happy with any tyupe of stream, I remeber what it was like with only the commentary - I don't think even the comnnentators knew what was going on.

Maybe you can include an option to pay for a high-quality stream? But still offer the low quality please! Or in other words, both, but if you can't do both, go for the free stream!

I had a great time listening to the Eve-Radio guys last time, and really wish I had planned to record the fights I was involved in to hear what they had to say about our fights
I would probably pony up the cash for a good stream.

i think the question is would that fee include the price of archiving each fight in high qualitiy so any 1 who has paid to watch it can DL it again when ever they want.
if so i would consider it but would really be a at the day type spare ash thing.

I'd probably go with the low quality stream or just audio. I can't really justify paying $10 to watch this just for one week. Maybe if there were other perks for laying down that much money I might pay, like, say, a raffle or whatnot. ___________________

Why not have a high quality video avaliable for download and leave the stream to be low quality. I would rather download and watch some high quality stuff at a later date.
And it depends on how crappy your talking about. There is crappy CNN Pipeline video, then there is crappy cellphone video, then there is crappy frame by frame video. I could live with the first two.

I assume that high quality means practically being able to read the damage information text and low quality being able to see what action is going on and no more. I am all for openness. I would watch a free stream and I think it is good for the 'immersement factor' that it will be free, so people who normally wouldn't watch will.

1. Free audio stream 2. Low-quality video at a small charge (as even low quality vid takes bandwidth which costs money) for say $5 for the entire tournament 3. High-quality video at $25 for the entire tournament
Stream it all into a plug-in built into the browser with a live chat session for those watching/listening.
Just my 2 cents :)

Edited by: Nee''kita Frist on 15/06/2006 22:16:32 I would say I will pay but I will pay 35 euros tops for any streaming software but that 35 euro tag MUST include ALL fights for viewing, commentary, background, ship details and streaming stats of damage etc etc. (obivously we should not know the loadout until the fight begins)
If it becomes PPV (pay per view) then I will only pay 2-3 euros per match and will need to know who is fighting who etc.
If there is an ISK option I would suggest people who can afford to can buy codes to sell on the forums in exchange for ISK and that should/would be the only option for that.
Free option - should be pretty much a must lets not be dividing the community please at least let them see the fights or maybe with Chibba's permission high quality recordings on Eve files.

You do realise that the streamining computer will probaly be top of the range then will send it to a server which will then compress and send the stream out via some really crazy streaming method that I no idea would be named.

It would only work if the people can use the codes to pay to view the event. Otherwise CCP isnt making any money from it, its just taking ISK out of the game. And that wont pay the bandwidth bills.

That was pretty much the point..
"People who can afford to."
To buy the codes and then sell them on the forums for ISK... You know how GTCs work right now? Just a one of "ticket" so to speak for the event.

And tbh this idea of paying came as a suprise for me and I'm not that happy about it, I don't like it and I am pretty confident that it could be pulled off with high-quality for free using sponsored links if that is the problem.
So, if I have to chose one option I'm afraid it would be the low-quality for free since the idea of paying to view it doesn't really get me hooked.
And finally - "We could bring you a crappy low-quality stream, which would deliver bad picture/sound quality" - imo I think we managed to push out pretty good streams when experimenting with EVE-Live that didn't require 1MiB/s+ streams, but without a doubt the EveTV guys know what they are doing.
Would it be against the EULA if I paid for a high-quality stream which I then re-broadcast for free via my network?

You could save the high quality streaming as premium service for the next tournament, when you might have had some time to think more about how to introduce premium services like that without them making us feel the hurt of actual premium services

Well, for what its worth. I think its pretty vital that WHATEVER way you broadcast it, the Shield/Armor/Hull stats are shown for each contestant. I really it might be hard to achieve, and it might mean less 'beauty shots' because of interface showing, but it makes the battles much more exciting to watch.
As for free/premium...Aslong as PayByCash works im a happy bunny.

Another approach: create a quick and dirty "playback-only" client and only transmit the server data. Bandwidth problems gone. Unrealistic in a reasonble timeframe, i know. ;) But a nice thing to keep in mind for future contests and recording eve events in general.

I'd say streaming the information would be more useful than streaming video, as that's what people are interested in. Realtime ship shield/armor/structure stats and active EW effects (taken from the server) + Audio would make a pretty nice package as far as I'm concerned.
Then throw a torrent up after everything is over (either for the day or for everything) with high quality video.

The "pay" thing, you're already going to squeeze more out with VOIP (while segregating the player base between "have's" and "have not's") ... common, CCP is better then that.
There is quality in CCP, and there is quality to be found among the customers. I am positive Chribba could implement a setup as he outlined.
I love to hear the answer on the EULA question.
Oh, and if you're going with a charged option ... make sure those without CREDITCARDS can also pay for it ^^ GTC's for instance.

Edited by: Doc Brown on 16/06/2006 03:53:04 I won't pay extra to see the fights for the following reasons:
1) A video feed isn't the same as seeing the fight from the Eve game and being able to adjust view, look at target, etc. 2) Too much money when I can probably find somebody who taped their fight and put it up for download. 3) Honestly, I have doubts in the ability to deliver a high-rez (800x600 at least) video feed at 30 frames per second. _________________________________________________

My .02 iskies:
1. I would pay $8-12 USD IF that is the amount for the whole week of fights and if that includes access to some sort of downloadable video later so that I could study the tactics for next year (Sun Tzu).
2. Is there anyway to have them be broadcast in some sort of "eve-like" engine or downloadable format that allows you to do some sort of zooming and camera rotation like we can do ingame? This would be awesome, especially if this same tool could be used on the downloadable content (if any were offered later).
3. Any chance you could maybe have a raffle for "Guest DJs" during the fight? Personally I think it would be awesome to have just your regular Eve-players have a chance to maybe have their voices broadcasting a match during the PVP tourney. This could be another way to raise money for it and maybe lower the cost of the connection.
4. Can you have an audio only stream for those of us who have really low speed connections at work or for streaming to an Ipod or things of that nature?
Thanks bunches and this sounds awesome!!!! I cannot wait to see it and see who pwns and who goes home. |

I think the stream would be a really cool idea. However I can guarantee that I'd end up having to work at least half the live coverage. Some way to download the event footage afterwards would be totally awesome.

And can we please have capable commentators? Not like in the last championship "And the ship in the left starts shoting at the frigate" or not even knowing the ship type. "The caracal does not have such a good traking does it". Not to mention so many "There are some explosions there, somebody is taking fire". I mean please, find somebody that actualy knows how to manuvre the camera and know the game. _________________________________

I like the idea of being able to see the event. But why does it have to be live video?
Why don't CCP create a bunch of "event eyes" characters, and let people login into them to see the action? Have those characters be controlled by CCP people, but send all data to player as tho his character was there. Players could chat and control camera position/zoom as usual, but can't control movement of the "eye" ship.
If you do something like that, anyone could see what's going on at no extra cost of bandwidth

No chance, it simply doesn't mean that much to me.
Quote: Would you rather have a low-quality stream for free?
Yep, I might drop in and watch some if free
Quote: Both?
Sounds like the best option but I wonder how many people would actually pay for the high quality. A high qual torrent available after the even might be better as someone else suggests.

All the broadcasts so far I wasn't able to watch or listen to live so I'm fairly certain I won't be able to watch the Tournament live this time either.
I did immensely enjoy listening to some of those very good commentators from EVE radio, really, trying to figure what's going on from a third person point of view, very good work.
Oh and some of those first-person point of view vids rocked.
So would I pay up for good quality live feeds? If I thought I could meet the schedule, probably yes, but since I doubt that's gonna happen, I'll have to vote "no". --

Just a thought.

Stream it out in low quality and then upload a high quality bit-torrent for download later.

I'd pay for it with ISK ... but CCP does not want these because they can make their own by clicking a button (how is THAT for unfair ...).
Hence, in no particular order:
- I second the "free stream" option.
- I second the "better quality by bittorrent, still free" option
- I second boobies.

Again the idea of extra charge for Eve content pops up (remember VoIP?)...this time we're asked at least...I don't like it...I stick to what I said earlier: Deliver all Eve content for the subscribtion fee we're already paying or (if really necessary) raise the fee for all! Everything else I consider not an option!
And about the boobies? Well, I do like boobies, but I fail to see the relevance of the question? Is it supposed to be funny? Is there something I missed? Me being a female, questions like this and the corresponding answers always leave a bad taste in my mouth...and no, it's not prudery or smth along these lines, I can have perfect fun with sexual content, but I feel it's misplaced again (just like the "h4wt chicks" from an earlier devblog)...

Edited by: Ath Amon on 16/06/2006 12:30:17 for me the free low-quality option will be the best, at least for this year
maybe will be nice to be able to download later the best matches in high quality as for normal videos.
a crazy idea if you plan to create a "real" eve-tv, maybe you can use the basic engine to recreate the images instead of streaming a video..
when voice will be integrated to the game basically you have averything to create an ingame "video client" that you can use to "stream" these events but also as a report for normal ingame events.
eg a battle ensure between angels and blood raiders, instead of the usual text news you can save the battle in "eve-format" (actual game data) and then stream it for a visual report with voice comments.
ok quite a crazy idea but it can be interesting not many bandwith problems and ingame video and audio quality.
ah just saw that i'm not the only crazy one a similar idea was alredy proposed :P

That depends.

or
Watching the action like you'd be watching the World Cup on T.V. with high quality Video and Sound?

Wow, nostalgia for my Shoutcast days.
Oh, and LeMonde isn't exactly correct in saying that this is an entirely new deal. Take a look at the Team Sportscast Network, or Radio ITG, both of which have done live tournament coverage (via audio and video) at events such as the CPL. Of course, the Cyberathlete Professional League isn't exactly a developer, but they are a "gaming company." So, first time a game developer has directly helped out with the stream, yeah probably.
I hope CCP and EVE Radio the best, and I'd opt for both options if possible - a high bandwidth and low bandwidth version, if it can be done (should be easy with relays).

Edited by: RedClaws on 16/06/2006 19:16:36 I really like these "Eve Recording" proposals.
Would it be possible to "record" the packages the game recieves/transmits into some kind of replay file? That replay file (when loaded) would "inject" the packages into some kind of "View-only Eve Client".
Would be handy to "record" pvp fights and take a look at them afterwards while still being able to turn the camera and such.
Ofcourse you wouldn't get the data that wasn't recieved like hostile ship damages (the ships you didn't lock) but it would be a nice start.
Would any dev like to comment on this? I heard a long time ago you guys were throwing this idea around.

Then make the higher quality version/editing with appropriate DJ/Eve-Radio commentary in it available for download via bitorrent or something similiar. Then ccp wouldn't have to pay quite as much for the bandwidth all us that want it could get it.

I can assure you that this year will be much different this year based upon what I know so far.
I was just stating what the two DJ's had to work with last year. Many people didn't realize it, but that is the honest truth, so there was a lot of guesswork on their part. You definitely can't fault them for the amount of time they spent broadcasting, their enthusiasm, and not to mention Eve Radio's generosity in handling 1400 simultaneous connections for FREE. I love how people take that for granted.
I can't say what the right thing to do here is whether to slap a fee on it or not. What people are failing to see is the immense bandwidth requirements as a whole. They need to stop looking at things on their own individual feeds. When you start shoveling half a gig to a whole gig every second it's pricey and it's also clear that CCP needs to weigh the options to bring in 3rd party sponsors. That part is legal mumbojumbo and to be left to the suits to decide. http://www.eve-radio.com |

Now there's an idea. Remember how the issue 1 EON ads were paid for with real world cash? You could investigate selling advertising during the event to eve corps for cash to subsidise the links. History indicates that some would take you up on it.
EDIT: As for the original question, no I probably wouldn't pay for the high quality link, but I do understand the justification for it. And honestly, who doesn't like boobies in at least some sense?

Just please don't stream the video using Realplayer :(. I'd be kind of interested on how you guys plan on streaming this to us. This sounds like a really cool idea and I'm definitely looking forward to watching it. Too bad CCP can't stream to us over Internet2 :p.

Some of us dont have credit cards, how are we supposed to pay?
Low-quality free stream would be my choice.
make the last fights, or the odd highlights of the competition be free high-quality.

This event is supposed to be an EVE community event offered to us. A fee charged for viewing or getting updates on the event is not community oriented, but feels like something you guys decided to try to get more money with.
I'm for the free stream, or Chribba's rebroadcast. If it all falls through, the last event I was glued to the forums for the play by play broadcast posts. Even though I had to read about it, that guy did a damn good job. He better be allowed to commentate this time again!!!

The question we have for the community is this, would you rather pay for a high quality stream of EveTV, or would you rather have a free, low-quality stream of the sights and sounds of the Championships?
You can read more about EveTV in LeMonde's Alliance Tournaments and EveTV blog.

It doesn't sound like they are trying to make cash off of this. The bandwidth usage for this would be in addition to what we pay for in our subscription fees. I can understand them trying to re-coup some of it if they decided to broadcast in High Quality.

If bandwidth cost is the problem (which seems to be the argument),
redestributable downloads ftw.
live would be great but not necessary, hand out the file to the community to redestribute, put it on P2P networks, whatever.
your main server doesn't have to have serious bandwidth if it's allowed to redestribute.

The idea is very interesting and most welcome. The implementation, however, troublesome.
There are a few reasons why people are reluctant to pay:
ò They don't know if they are able to view a live broadcast much (or at all). The timing is inconvenient for some people, mostly due to timezones, work, studies etc. and therefore a downloadable version would be good to have available (which does not cost much and for many if not most negates the need for any live broadcast).
ò They don't know what they are getting. Are contestants' HUDs visible, or at least hit points and setups? Are the DJs competent? Is the quality high enough? How high would the 'low quality' be?
ò They think the price is too high.
ò They lack payment methods.
ò They lack money.
Would there be enough people to cover the costs for a high quality broadcast, or will they end up paying more for less?
Because of the above reasons, I don't think charging players would work well. Others have suggested looking into covering costs by ads, which you certainly should look into in my opinion.
I would not of course mind if a high quality stream was provided as an extra service for a cost if other means for covering the costs prove fruitless, but it would be important to have a free stream aswell and (or at least) downloadable videos with as high quality as possible. That would however result in less people paying, and unfortunately possibly if not probably rendering the income to cover a high quality stream insufficient.
So, in short: I think you should definitely go ahead with this as it's a great idea and event. Due to the above mentioned problems you should only provide the best stream possible free of charge (or funded on adverts, sponsors or other means) and provide downloadable files of the highest possibly quality.
Oh, and personally while I wouldn't mind too much paying, I would (or will) not simply because I couldn't (or can't) view much or most of it live.
I'm however looking forward to it and hope you'll reach a solution that works out for the best. ---

Edited by: R3dSh1ft on 19/06/2006 11:02:49 $8-$12 dollars is like the price of a cinema ticket, at least in the UK (ú7 - ú10 for a nice place)
I would definitely be prepared to pay for this however a couple of points.
Stuff outside my timezone - can I download it later rather than having to stay up until 4am to stream it, and if so for how long will it be cached? How will you guys be able to reserve this much bandwidth - you are talking about crazy amounts lol.
To those people who are confused over why to have this as a live event - well it brings the community together at one time and helps build momentum behind the tournament and gets people involved. Its more exciting!! ______________________________________

please, no streaming .. how about just save it all in sizable chunks and then sell them for whatever the extra bandwidth will cost you? I for one have to work and stuff (rl nastyness) so i can't always sit by the computer to watch these streams (if they go in real time live that is) even tho i pay for them, which i would hesitate to do if my schedule only allows for a quick glance in my lunch time at work or whatever.

You could always avoid the whole streaming video idea by maybe incorporating a view mode into the actual game: (sry for bad english, just got back from le mans and very tired :P)
Basically you could incorporate the ability to view the action happening on someone elses ship in realtime in game? See what modules they are using, what they are locking etc. but have no ability to alter or affect the ship.
I'm sure you would be able in login to eve maybe on a seperate server which could stream the data from participants ships to your eve client which would then re-enact it all out.
Say if person X is in the tournament. The data from their client would be sent to the EVE server, which in turn could then send the exact data back out to thousands of players who could be using the special "mode" of EVE that lets them view what someone else is doing at minimal bandwidth?? Surely that cant use up any more bandwidth then people playing the game logged into their accounts?
You could also incorporate the options of switching players that you can see on screen or in local chat etc. Possibilities are endless. But the main factor of this idea is that with a little bit of programming you could maybe save a lot of money from using less bandwith then sending out thousands of video streams. The only real stream that people would need are commentators to the live action so we can hear what is happening.
If you do this for a cost of say $5 initially to those who want it as the first optional expansion for eve that you have to pay for, then you could use it thousands of times in the future. You can even expand this to being able to watch the "events" which happen in eve which so many people know little out. It could even become like a live drama for those who arnt addicted to eve enough!
Just a thought! If this has been mentioned before then sorry i didnt read the whole post...

What they should do....is make the field encased in some sort of large force field, then sell tickets to get into the system where its being held. And the festival seating 4tw \o/
edit lag....needs to be excluded from the equation because i dont want to form a soloution for it.

Hi,
wouldn't it be possible to make the in-game camera position remote-controlled via a central location coordinate and direction vectors. That way you could use the game engine and the local cpu's to render for themselves. This then makes spectating an in-game thing, which further enhances the game. You could then even think of corporation-sponsored tournaments, which make you pay ISK to watch the match.
Boobs... Sure... |

I'd pay for a video of it all. But id say distribute this video to 10 or so people, and then let it rip on bittorrent. That way it can get to everyone for free. This way, no need for cash for bandwith charges, it'd run on our own. But maybe payin so that you can cover the costs of the equipment setup, sure, but that could possibly be handled via donations.

A game engine - Check Object data - Check Internet connection - Check PC/Desktop - Check
Am I missing something? Like the ability to let the computer use only the game data, which is minimal for game objects compared to high quality motion video. It worked in Quake and it.. Doesn't work in EVE? What's the missing link, full engine rewrite? Go for it!
