You guys do have jump-clones @ccp_headquarter, don't you?

So lets say when the server went down this most recent time and I had just jumped out of my wormhole to see where the wormhole went and launched probes and then poof! I have to go and will likely not be able to login for a while leaving me stuck outside my WH. (If the probes have not already expired they will soon) Can I petition this so I can get back into my WH and get my probes back considering that it isnt my fault that the servers went down? I would understand a petition for this being denied if I jumped out and logged off of my own accord; but I have no control over this...

The timing is too suspicious to be a coincidence. Putting together the closing of somer Blink and the repeated DDoS attacks may be not just conspiracy theory. The attacks will not solve the lottery's case, but someone is thinking he have to revenge something what was not his at the first place anyway.

Whittorical Quandary wrote:I wonder if as part of authenticating the game client for log in, they could require a detected up to date anti-virus detection.
No, no, no, no no.
This makes no sense.
This has nothing to do with some form of malicious code effective the server - it's simply a DDoS attack. To help you make sense of this, consider this example.
I find 5 million random people to load any web page, and get them all to load it up. I then, at the count of three, instruct them all to press the refresh button as often as possible, as quick as they can.
The result - the server that actually hosts that web page is unable to deal with that kind of traffic, and many people become unable to access that server in the first place - or in the worst case scenario, the server itself is literally so overwhelmed that it ceases to function until it is rebooted and everyone stops flooding it with so many requests.
A DDoS attack does not really require this kind of effort, however - in most cases it simply requires writing a quick script that does the same thing (floods a server with as many requests as possible as quickly as possible) - and then taking advantage of having other systems that the attacker can use to repeat this action.
Sure, many of the systems involved in botnet attacks like this are probably infected with something - but think of the average Windows user - their system is probably "infected" with at laest twenty random malware packages that they are not even aware of in the first place, half of these people probably stole a copy of their OS from some random torrent site and have been rootkitted from day one (And no "anti-virus" is going to help you, a proper root-kit runs before the OS itself even boots, making it mostly silly to even consider the possibility of detected said rootkit via the OS).... Also, not to mention, what happens to me when my Linux systems suddenly require a windows based anti-virus tool to verify that I should be allowed to log into EVE? Not seeing that as something that is going to work very well :P
The reality is, DDoS attacks like this are just part of how the internet works - and as the ISP's (CCP buys their bandwidth from a ISP, just like the rest of us!) experience more of these attacks, the infrastructure improves, patches get deployed, routers get smarter, and things get better :P Just snag a beer, chillax, and rest happy knowing EVE will be back soon. It always is :P

lemme add a bit to the discussion:
Quote:DDoS mitigation is a set of techniques for resisting distributed denial of service (DDoS) attacks on networks attached to the Internet by protecting the target and relay networks.[1] This is done by passing network traffic addressed to the attacked network through high-capacity networks with "traffic scrubbing" filters.[2] DDoS mitigation requires correctly identifying incoming traffic to separate human traffic from human-like bots and hijacked browsers.[3] The process is done by comparing signatures and examining different attributes of the traffic, including IP addresses, cookie variations, http headers, and Javascript footprints.[3]
Manual DDoS mitigation is no longer recommended due to DDoS attackers being able to circumvent DDoS mitigation software that is activated manually.[4] Best practices for DDoS mitigation include having both anti-DDoS technology and anti-DDoS emergency response services.[4] DDoS mitigation is also available through cloud-based providers.[2]
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDoS_mitigation
so, you can't stop it. you can only mitigate it, since you will need up to serious hardware (or, up to military level), depending on how hard it is, how fast, and how long it lasts.

what part of what he said was actually wrong? that is pretty much what a DDoS attack is... a bunch of machines pinging the server a bunch of times until it crashes... im sure its more complicated than that but generally thats whats going on GET IN THE VAN |

dude I had to deal with ddos attacks on another game where we owned the server...I know what im talking about, it might not be fancy techno babble, but it gets the point across that someone creates a bunch of fast sending connections to the server causing the server to constantly process those packets of information, causing to lag, then crash... |
