Well it wasnt me but it was a friend of mine. I find it pretty LAME that 3 guys attack a retriever mining without any warning or ransom request. Podding him was really just classless.
Now I know in 0.4 space this is allowed so no "rules" were broken but have a little class and tact if you wish to do this. It was a retriever for gods sake and its not like he was going to fire back. You want to kill him...fine but at least try some sort of communication first to at least give him a chance to try and pay his way out. And he was podded to boot.
Like I said it was fair game but you might as well just shot a guy in a wheelchair, in the back trying to get away.

They should have ransomed. A lot of times the miner will pay the ransom, and offer to pay a bit more if the pirates stay around and protect him. THing is... strip miners sell for 3 mil each. So you have to make it worth the pirates time to let you live.

What do you suggest the danger in 0.4 should be instead?

it's out of empire space, you should expectto be shot when going through 0.4 and lower systems.
If you can't deal with it, keep out

Low security space. L-O-W S-E-C-U-R-I-T-Y space. It has low security.
You get the picture? If someone wants to kill a mining barge there, and loot those tasty strip miners, then they can do so.
Oh, and maybe it's like shooting a guy in a wheelchair, but a guy in a wheelchair would probably also be shot while wheeling around in Somalia. Or a dark back alley in some American Metropolis.

They were teaching him to watch local and stay aligned and vigilant.
He didn't. He died.

Let's extend the metaphor a little further, it's like shooting a guy in a wheelchair in a darkened backalley who has solid gold wheeltrim.
Yes, they might have tried a ransom, but who knows, maybe it was a retriever with stabs. A quick gank may have better odds for profit. And the podding generally results in less smack in local.
Remember, travelling defenseless makes you foolish. Not the pirates cheap for picking on you.
Of course, I in no way condone piracy, or the ganking of people who don't take adequate precautions to defend themselves. Lyrus Associates is recruiting |

Like any PvP games, this also is a magnet for any kind of psycho kids hitting when they can.
Lesson to learn: 1) till the moment you are ready, don't go, don't even transit lower the 0.5. 2) once ready (or you want a change of pace), bring the cheapest t1 frig with you, gang with other 40 ppl and enjoy "pvp" in 0.1-0.4 (and jump clone first......) 3) once grown up, bend over to a big corp/alliance and start to camp gates (Congratulation, you are among the cool kids now, and you can call the rest carebears.)
Seriously, down there you must consider yourself a target, and should think like that. Think again next time.........

Just see it like this . .
You come out of Juvenile school and its your first week in junior collage. Its so shocking at first ..
Drugs, Sex, Fighting, and even bully`s
after a while you get use to it and accept it and see it as common life which you have to survive.
ITs hard and sometimes unfair.
Just try adept/adjust and be better/smarter as the rest.
Welcome To EVE my brother :)

Thinking to be a potential target expecially in low sec. and 0.0 is not the worst idea. I never forget that, when I'm travelling, otherwise it gets expensive. It works at least better than assuming that people leave me alone, although many don't. So your advice was a good one. -------------------------- Post with your main !!!111 |

I love threads like this, I really do.
Fire Giant... don't pre-suppose you know the reasons for the ganking. They may be economic (selling the stripminers), resource driven (locals who claim the belts), or simply boredom driven (ooh something to gank, pretty explosion, smack talk from miners).
No, it doesnt take much skill to gank a retriever, but its a viable way of generating an income. It also doesnt take much skill to sit in a belt mining, but that doesnt stop it also being a viable way of generating an income.
EVE is an MMO... next time, protect your friend in a PvP fitted ship or at the very least watch local and safespot if trouble could be coming.

Without any warning? Really?
Ebil Pirate: Miners! We're in the system and we're coming for you, 30 seconds, we've started counting now!
Should this be mandatory for pirates?
No ransom request?
Too bad, it's really up to them.

Mining in lowsec without backup and not aligned for instawarp,he gets ganked and wonders why?.
Darwins natural selection extends even into EVE it seems.
"Lame" is giving your opponent the opportunity to fight back, just ask Patton or any other real life General.
Your friend died because he was stupid, no other reason.
So he wasnŠt asked for a ransom......hmmmm nope, nothing in the EULA says he has to be. Pirates are not meant to be "classy" or "tactfull", they are nasty evil people out to spoil your fun, deal with it and give them as little opportunity as possible.

The question is, why did your mate take a retriever into low sec space without an escort of some type??

The reason why you... err, your friend, got popped is because
A) Strip miners are decent loot. B) Your friend probably wouldn't have paid ransom anyway, like 95% of other people who are ransomed.
and
C) Pod kills are funny.
Well, maybe not so much C, but the reason many pirates don't bother ransoming these days is because most people have got it in their head "Oh well they'll kill me anyway, so I'm not going to pay."
Regardless, he was in a barge in lowsec obviously without an escort and got nailed for not paying attention to local. Sounds like the only problem here is a lack of intelligence.
