Well, fresh in a new home and new job, I've finally had the time to finish the third installment from the Smiffa Paper Drive Yards.
New race, new class of ship - I present the Apocalypse. Originally slated for entry into the model contest in E:ON 4, I missed it through RL stuff. Back on track now - I hope (all going well) to have a Gallente ship done by sometime in November.
Plus, there's some instructions I have to finish for the Rifter. They're just not as fun as the models themselves.
Anyhow, heres the goods (US Letter for the Apoc to follow): Apocalypse, A4 PDF
And if you missed the thread from this year, here's the others: Heron Heron, A4 zipped PDF Heron, zipped US-Letter
Rifter Rifter, A4 PDF Rifter, US-Letter PDF
Once again, props and thanks to Chribba for the godliness that is eve-files!

Thanks for all the comments guys! It makes this worth doing in it's own right
Originally by: Chode Rizoum are they hard to make ?

They're all worth having a go at - if I were you and you're just starting out on em, print it out in low-quality black and white first, to see how you get on. Otherwise it'll cost an arm and a leg in toner/ink! For paper, I use 160 gsm. Some say that's too thick, I tried a less weightier grade and couldn't get on with it though...

Edit: Crap, no black ink.... *changes* Good thing I had a spare laying around.Surprised
I'll post the instructions I have so far for the Rifter - I'll dig em out this afternoon

I really wonder if CCP is blind or something. You have something easy to produce, someone with a LOT of talent and a great idea. And all you would have to do is hire him and make him create more models. You could make awsome giveaways + adds for the EON + extra books with it. Handing out stuff like that as a special at fan fests or as add on for the EON would be just to awsome.

hehehehe! excellent good to see you like 'em.
If you're going to start the Rifter, you might want to use these. They're not finished and untested, but might be OK for running through the initial part assemblies.
Wolf... hmmm.. can't fly one, will have to find someone with one so's I can see the differences.

Sorry to necro an old topic but this thread deserves the attention and I'd make a new one anyway which would probably be ignored.
Anyway.....
After much procrastination I finally printed out the apoc today and started construction this evening. I decided to print 2 copies, one for testing and first time assembly in black and white on bad paper and one for final assembly in color and on 14lb paper. However I still have some questions for you guys.
Will 24lb paper be enough? I was unable to find heavier but it beats the standard 20lbs.
What do you use as far as an adhesive? I was going to use an ElmerÆs "glue pen" but the glue had the consistency of putty and wasn't sticky. So far I have been using double sided poster tape which has been working fairly well. It adds some rigidity and weight which helps with stability. However it is quite tricky to use with fine points, the smaller "tabs" and fine points (Apoc nose) are big issues. (I place the tape on the non tab side of the joint, trim it with an x-acto to fit, then attach the tabs on the other piece of the joint to the back side of the tape).
Also, would people be interested in a blog/instruction write up or would I be wasting my time?

I certainly don't mind the odd bump . A stickeh would have been cool, but alas, I don't think I'll get one now...
On to your questions: I use this paper, which some feel is too thick, but I reckon gives good integrity to model. This stuff still flexes, and bends when scored/rolled well. Lesser stuff I found tended to soak glue up too quickly and go soggy. I think 160gsm is about 75lb paper.
As far as glue goes, I use white craft glue. Can't say what brand, as I removed the label a looong time ago and can't remember where I got it from.
Like the poster-tape idea though. Might try that one!

Finished the rifter and i was happy how it came out. Now im considering making a gang of 3-4 but i need a leader...so plz make a cyclone or tempest to lead my gang.
Atm im going to keep the models in the table but my house entance is 2 story high before the stairs hit the roof for the 1st floor so im considering hanging the models from the roof and have em seem like their fighting the apoc or something. I may use string for lasers or something perhaps colored wire but atm i dont think i can make the projectiles or missles .
Anyway gimme a tempest and a punisher to complete my amarr/minmatar skirmish.
Keep up the good work btw and i hope CCp would give you a job so you can make all the models in game.

I can but now post (my account expired when i read this thread first), so in that time i made a Rifter in 80g/m¦ paper, draft-quality, so the result isn't something that could be named "straight", but hey - it's a minmatar ship (no i didn't use ductape, perhaps next time^^).
So here is the result: Gallery I also made a quick and dirty walk-through, but only in German: Walkthrough And this evening i made a picture, showing which part belongs to which part of the ship, something like a "pink camouflage" i think (or "clown rifter"?): Rifter Parts _____________________________ - be excellent to each other -

Smiffa, I'm in the middle of making this, and am having the time of my life. But I wanted to point you towards piece 6A of the rifter, I believe there's a mistake there. It's not symmetric to 6b and placement of a few tabs makes no sense.

Been a good few months since I built this. However, 6a and 6b are notionally identical, as they form part of the "legs" of the ship, which themselves would be identical. That said, there are odd tab placements on that part, which I will look at and make some amendments to. If it helps, the "plugs/ends" of the part will have gaps at the top of them once assembled.
Next time I'm in-game, please feel free to convo me and chat, if you like .

Shouldn't be too much trouble to correct.

Thanks for the reply and kind words dude, always nice to see the thread bounce back up the boards!
The instructions are done using Google SketchUp. I import a jpeg of the part, trace over the lines, and then use the excellent shape, node and rotate tools in SketchUp to move the flaps, etc.
Then, once I've got an image, I use something like CorelDRAW or the excellent Inkscape to place the image and the associated arrows, etc.
Finally, print to a CutePDF or similar printer.
Pretty much all of this is done with software that is freely available, so you should be able to get started right away.

What are you starting with? Do you have 3d files that you're unfolding with something like pepakura designer or are you unfolding these things by hand?
You're work has been linked from 4chan.org's papercraft and origami image board . Usually it's the same old reposts but the regulars tend to discuss printers and glue and such on a pretty regular basis. Something to note: laser printer ink usually crumbles when it's bent sharply...

I had a few questions/comments relating to these models.
First of all, good work! Eve is lucky to have a community that applies their real life know-how to enhancing the enjoyment of the game of everyone else. I look forward to building some of these models in the near future.
Today I went to a local Fedex-kinkos (I live in the United States) store and did some digging around for some info. Full color prints are only 89 cents per page for 20lb paper, and I believe a slight premium on heavier paper. This seems to bring the project printing cost to around $10, easily doable to try a multi-weekend distraction .
When I did some math, it seems like the 160gsm paper translates to around 50lb paper here, which I didn't find. When I was looking at Kinko's samples, they had a 70lb sheet available. However, when I played around with it, it still seemed like a flexible sheet - is this correct? Should I be looking more towards a card stock? Something stiff that can support itself? Or will the more flimsy stuff be fine? I'd like input from some successfull builds made according to US standards materials.
Finally, on a related note, can anyone recommend a ready source of A4 sized paper in the US? Neither Kinko's nor Officedepot in my area carried it, and sometimes I need to print A4 documents and have to scale/adjust to letter, gets somewhat annoying.
Thanks all, Shiva |

This is the exact paper I use: Staples "text & graphics" 160 g/m2
Taking a look here gives an approximate. So your 70lb stuff sounds about right - it should be flexible, but also enough to take it's own weight and provide some support. I had a hard time with getting both the Rifter and the Heron to support themselves with thinner paper, and any thicker would have meant the smaller parts are really hard to cut and fold.
I had a quick look on the Staples US website, which list a bucketload of paper types, including some stuff that looks like what you'd be after, and they appear to do mail-order as well.

I'll see what I can knock up. Having enough problems snaring the time to finish #4!! I will sort them though (We need a "Soon" smiley)

I've had some donations from charitable folk, and I'm most grateful as it fuels my Loosing-Dominix-To-NPCs habit nicely . I'd never charge for this stuff, partly cause it's CCP IP and partly cause there's enough stuff around in the past that I wanted to do but couldn't because there's a charge that got in the way.
That said, if there's a clear want for a particular ship then EVEmail me and I'll tally the most popular and make that #5. I will review the requests so far though and see what there is. I think it's pretty evenly spread though...
Cheers for all the support

First off, WONDERFUL WORK.
Second, nitpicking bastard me says: Is there any way that the frig models you have could be made in scale to that Apoc model? I'd imagine it would only require resizing the assempbly directions, but I am guessing on that..

I've had a long day, feel free to sort my maths out if it's out
I looked at this before. Using j0's ship comparison chart, I figure that the Apoc is about 30 times the length of the Rifter. Scaling down the Rifter to Apoc scale isn't the best idea as it's a bit fiddly as it is. Plus, it'd be really really tiny.
Sooo, the Rifter is about 280mm/11" long (or thereabouts, don't have the model with me at present). This would make the Apoc a whopping 8.4 metres/27'5" long. With stiff enough board or internal support (paper pasted onto real thin ply?) and a large enough printer would do the trick.
Project for this years FF?

I don't believe I only just found this thread. Brilliant work :)
Gonna see if I can print these out soon.
Read something on the other thread about doing these in aluminium, and that reminded me of this model I bought off a street vendor somewhere deep in China while on holiday there. It was a Chinese PT boat, probably about 2 1/2 feet long, made of really thin sheet aluminium. It wasn't that detailed, but it was cheap as hell, and it broke apart fairly quickly because it was put together with super glue, and there were no folded tabs at the joints.
I'm just thinking how amazing one of these would look in aluminium if somehow the textures can be etched on, and painted...

I didnt ment you should put a tax or charge for it... simply: Different ppl want to see different models coming out of your hands so instead of just saying i would like to see x, y, z Make a forum post where ppl could BID on what they want to see... this being by no means an obligation for you... just something to tip the scale maybe...
For me... would be hard to decide what ONE ship i would like to see next... but i do have some favorites... First thing that comes to mind would be an ADD-ON for the rifter... to make it a wolf and maybe some better guns for it... like some 200mm ac's and some arty's :) -------------------------------------

For general interest of readers here, the weight of paper doesn't necessarily determine it's thickness. Different quality paper also has a different density.
Thin & flexible coated paper, can be heavier than gsm/lb than, thick uncoated rigid paper. Just something to bear in mind when chosing what paper you want to print on.

I'm still here, just had a bit of a siesta and this answer is less than 90 days, making it a sort of twitching-not-quite-dead-necro. Quite cool to see there's still some interest.
I've not failed to notice the GFx upgrade, indeed upgrading my own PC to cope better so I think I'll refresh the Rifter, Heron and Apoc with new textures before completing the Gallente cruiser that's been in the works for about 18 months...

Oh jeez, awesome work awesome work! Can we get a Caracel or a badger (Badger would be easy) with an assortment of roids. OH! How about a Hulk? Or a retriever, or maybe even an ibis? Seriously, Ibis, Reaper and whatever Gallante start with, that'd be cool. Or all of them. Please? I'll send you 10mil for any future ones you release, these are too good for me to take for free...
as a note, the Rifter looked scary, so did the Apoc so I went with the one that looked easiest, the Heron. Well, I guess my Industry skill is WAY too low because I think it's starting to look more like a Reaper than a Heron haha. Thankfully I'm using crappy paper as a test run of sorts to get an idea how to do it... without instructions this is actually pretty hard to make! Amazing work, I gotta tell you.

I am, just hopelessly busy IRL, like moving house and stuff. I do haunt this thread every so often though. Haven't done much on the cruiser but still have all the files and stuff ready to continue towards the autumn.
