More love for the drone UI is essential.... alternatively we could make it so that guns and missiles can only be activated through a box that drops off the overview and the right-click menu.

I like things the way they are. Drones make the game more challenging. Its like playing eve on hardcore mode!
I would suggest CCP give drones a chance to emancipate themselfs and turn into rogue drones to infest your ship while docked inside your drone bay.
CCP can also make a free game called Drones Online and then charge people $30 bucks a month for an Dev. gold level account to fly caldari missle ships.

No. This is not a good idea.
As it stands, the space you want to put the drone controls, is used, on my overview at least, to store the gang commands, and health status of my gang mates, and in systems with collosal amounts of asteroid belts, some of teh standard overview data.
Losing the bottom of my overview makes my hunting inordinately more difficult, and what for? Chunky buttons for drone control? Pfft.
The idea of having seperate drone controls is, in itself, good. However, I think any idea should be more slimlined, and less screen hungry, especially when the overview is so restrictive already.
You take what is offered. And that must sometimes be enough. |

If you read the thread bit more carefully, i said (somewhere on page 1 i think) that theres plenty of good places on screen where those drone controls can be placed. That location shown in the pic was just an example. --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

Indeed, a better position would be required, but I still think something less apce intensive is needed. But then, and entire UI overhaul is really needed, to free us from the constraints we've currently got.

/signed. Beats the current interface for most purposes. Needs to be customizeable based on screen size and number of groups though.

I love this idea. It's been needed since... since the begining of time.
Only concern is the placement of the controls. I use the space right of the module buttons for the overview. I used the space left of the ship read-out for chat windows. I therefore suggest that they would be best placed under or over the current module buttons. They are after all effectively just another weapon system and need to be intergrated like one.
I suggest something similar to your idea. Using buttons like the current module system:
- Load a drone into the launcher (button) - button back lit transparent.
- First, and subsequent odd numbered, left-click on the button to launch and attack a selected target - button back lit green. This would only launch the drone if no target is selected.
- Second, and subsequent even numbered, left-click on the button would cause the drone to return to drone bay - button back lit flashing yellow.
- Right-clicking brings up a control menu not unlike the current one for weapons allowing reloads and activeting special action (Fighter drones.)
- Auto-reload fills the slot with the next available drone of same type.
- If a drone is incapacited flash the button background red. If a drone is incapacitated add or make active a menu option to self distruct the drone. This will clear the launcher/controller to reload the next drone.
- When a drone is engaged (offensive or logistics) put the drone next to the target display, just like the other weapons and modules.
- The number of launcher buttons is determined by the coresponding drones skills and ship bonuses. The current max. is 25, 5 for Drones Lv. V plus 15 Carrier Lv. 5 plus 5 if all 5 posible Drone Control Units are active, that will necessitate 3+ rows if only using 8 buttons per row or a row of 13 and a row of 12 if using the space above the ship read-out.
Remember people, drones are ammunition not weapon systems. If you believe otherwise you will lose your ship trying to save your drones. If this is so, then we need to treat them just like any other form of ammo.

Awesome. Although current UI is good, this will make it a lot easier controlling one drone at a time and it will clean up the overview.

I like where these ideas are going. One of the concerns here is lack of space, where to fit these drone buttons etc. What about where the modules are? What I mean is if you have drones onboard a button could appear next to the ship control panel that switches between drone interface and the regular module interface. There could even be a short-cut button to change views(up/down arrow keys maybe)and even short-cuts for drone commands once the view has been changed.

Previously suggested drone interface
Suggested a UI change months ago and got absolutely no dev or even forum mod response. Drones do not appear to be a priority for CCP as they can't even get around to fixing the return to bay bugs, let alone getting them out of the overview that became even more overcrowded with the new gang additions. Funny how people seem to think that changes need to be made to the current one now, post-revelations while all responses leaned toward everything is just fine the way it is back then.

Pretty as your UI idea is...the one thing it needs is a "hide" button...like the little white arrow for the weapons mods...other than that...

This is such a great idea, good job with the pic too. I will be a very satisfied customer if something like this were to be implemented!
Also, would be nice if there was the ability to assign keyboard hotkeys to Drone stuff, like Engage Drones and Return to Bay! <------

even if i just recieved hotkeys for drones i'd be happy. launch drones scoop drones to drone bay attack target return and orbit thats all i really need atm... but the UI sounds pretty cool too.

At the same time is there any chance of getting the drones to actually obey all the commands you give them? I know it's a lot to ask but we have been asking for about 18 months...

Maybe if you started treating them nicer they wouldnt constantly feel the need to shoot you.
