1. those numbers shown in drone bay image (100% 100% 100%) are condition of the drone (shield, armor, struct)
2. Drone list is not shown by default (its only used if you want to check drone condition or give command to single drone)
3. Drone UI is not shown at all if your ship does not have any drones in it. (to save screen space).

Im sure pretty much everyone agrees that current drone UI is not that great. It eats too muchn space in overview and its associated with bunch of bugs (overview components are quite hard to resize for example).
And kali is soon around the corner, so overview is going to get even more crowded.
Anyways, I had some spare time and decided to check if i can improve it at all.
Goals were simple: 1. Make it eat less space on screen. 2. Separate overview and drone UI. 3. Make it semi pretty (ok, that wasnt really my goal, but cutpaste seems to work pretty well)
Heres the results:
UI LAYOUT: Image
Command Buttons ---------------
Components: Launch Drones (Launches default group if nothing is selected) Return (grayed out if theres no drones in space) Attack Target (grayed out if theres no drones in space) Orbit (grayed out if theres no drones in space)
Usage: Pretty straight forward: Just select drone group and whack da button to give command to it.
NOTE: These buttons can be used to control single drone, not just groups. To control single drone, expand drone list, select one drone (or more if you want to give command to 2, 3 or 4 drones) and whack these buttons.
Drone Group Buttons -------------------
Functionality: R-Click on group button gives R-Click menu (see below) L-Click on group button selects the group.
R-Click Menu on Drone Group Icon - Launch Drones (this only shows if group is in bay) - Attack Target - Orbit (this only shows if group is not already orbiting) - Return (..to drone bay) (this only shows if drones are not in bay) - <separator> - Expand Group (shows drones) - Collapse Group (hide drones)
Other Functionality: -If drone group is fighting/mining, group icon is flashing in red -If drone group is returning to ship, group icon is flashing in yellow -If drone group is idle, group icon is normal (no flashy things) -Double click on drone group icon when group is in bay lauches the group -Double click on drone group icon when drones are in space commands it to attack target. -If theres ungrouped drones, they are shown in their own group. So you dont need to make drone group if your ship only holds couple drones.
NOTES: 1. Return to Drone Bay command replaces 'Scoop to drone bay', 'Scoop to Cargo Hold' and 'Return to Drone Bay' because only one command is really needed. 2. Inventory icons can be used as drone group icons. 3. Theres also drone group for 'ungrouped drones' which are not assigned into groups. 4. Number shown on drone grp icon means how many drones are in it.
Drone List (when group is expanded) -----------------------------------
R-Click Menu on Drone - Launch Drone - Attack Target - Orbit - Return (..to drone bay) - <separator> - Move Drone... (.. adjust groups)
DRONE BAY: Image ----------------
R-Click Menu on Drone Group - Collapse (closes group) - <separator> - Rename Group - Delete Group - Create New Group - Set Group Icon (this sets icon that is shown on main drone UI in space view) - Set as Default Group (for example, default drone group is used if no group is selected when giving commands (for example: launch drones)
R-Click Menu on Drone - Move Drone (to new group)
Other functionality: - Drag&drop to move drones
NOTES: 1. When drone group is created, icon is added in main drone UI (space view). That group icon can be dragged to different position, just like ship modules. If icon is not set, default icon is used. 2. When drone group is deleted, icon is removed from main drone UI.

What a great suggestion (and not only because I'm in the same Corporation :P).
If you had those command buttons similar as normal ship module buttons, but instead for drones, it would make things much easier. Just expand that idea a bit: If you have buttons for drone groups, don't just limit their usage for *groups* only, allow single drones to be dragged there also. Also the number of buttons there are available for drones/groups could be larger. This way you can decide how to use, if you want to control a group of drones, drag a drone group from drone bay to the button. If you want to control a single drone, drag a single drone from the drone bay.
Good idea.

Edited by: Ariya Arnaud on 08/11/2006 10:51:40 Definite improvement, and I hope I will see something like this in the future. When in a gang, My "Overview" consists of like 60-80% drone controls and gang list. Not very useful.
Just the ability to tell what the drones damage-status is while it's in your bay would be great, as it makes it easier to reorganise your drones into new groups.

I love this idea, much much better than the current way it is now. The only problem I see is when you have more than 5 drone groups. Maybe have two rows for drones and the third row is for the buttons. ----------------------------------------------- http://www.uozone.net/files/cic/val4_eve.jpg Signature filesize exceeds max limit of 24000 bytes. A good idea! Perhaps all drone controlls should move into a seperate window, like the scanner is at the moment.
atm it is a pain in the ass to control and manage drones is space and bay (right click on the drones in "drones near space" to be able to engage target for example)
The only problem is, that ccp won't bring that online under a year (when they would start to work right away). And I don't see CCP will start working on that part of the game soon.

This is very well thought out and executed! Something like this should have been a apart of the combat reorganization. Common Sense organization! Who would have thunk it.
Personally, I'd like to see the entire interface rebuilt (among other things)before we go rolling around in the mud with the Dirtsiders in a RTS but that's just me. ================================================== Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that. -George Carlin (1937 - )

I really like this idea. Not a big fan of more bubbles (my overview or teamspeak overlay usually sit in that area), but I love idea of taking the drone bay OUT of the overview and giving it either it's own seperate window, as the op suggests, or it's own tab on the overview itself.
Finally, we need better keymapping. The current systems sucks.
Sorry for that last hijack ...

Very nice it just needs:
1. Hotkeys.
2. Scoop to cargo hold is sometimes still needed but can be in the menus as its rarely needed.

Yeah, i thought about that too (but hit that 4000 character limit and then forgot about it :)
Anyways... Theres 4 different spots on screen where those new bubbles could be placed.
1. Left hand side of overlay, under locked targets. This would be good because drone controls, targets and current target controls would be near eachother. Meaning less mouse travel.
2. Current location thats shown in the pic. This could be a problematic place for people with low screen resolutions.
3. On top of ship module bubbles. Just add couple rows of bubbles for drone controls.
4. Left hand side of the screen. Under solarsystem info and next to command bar. Ofcourse drone UI layout would have to change if placed here (2 columns of bubbles) --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

1. Yes, forgot about them completely. And i agree.
2. Include draggin&dropping drones from drone bay to cargo, and from cargo to drone bay (in space). This way it would be there, but wouldnt litter r-click menus (its not that often used command (atleast for me)). --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

An extra tab in the Overview window would make things worse in my opinion. Unless the tab can be dragged away from the overview window (like when you stack windows and you gain chat tabs e.g.). In situations where you need drones, you probably also need the drone UI. If you have to constantly switch between drone tab and overview tab that really makes things worse :)
Anyway, lets keep this thread alive so maybe the devs see this and take atleast some ideas from Ruatos post :)

Anythnig that allows drones to be moved into your drone bay from cargo hold in space is broken as it effectively removes the effect of drone bay size (move to bay, launch, move to bay, launch, etc).

Hmm, didnt even think about that :)
Bunch of new checks would have to be introduced in game (m3 of drones in space compared to drone capacity) to make it work, and im not sure if its worth the hassle. --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

Bump for great justice.
These changes would make drones simple and easy to use, while freeing up valuable overview space for gang viewing.

Simple fix: don't let you move drones into the dronebay if you have drones in space, that way you could replace lost drones but no silly exploits.

I myself hate the current drone interface, it gets in the way and when you are in gang and need to use drones... it becomes rather annoying to use due to how big the overview is.
One thing i think would improve this: Change the status to show shield / armor / structure, from what i can tell yours is only showing one stats %.
And add an option to hide the drone menu, perhaps where the options are to show / hide passive modules and all that? --Sig-- Anything posted by me is my opinion and not that of my corp or alliance. |

This would be much better. Like many others I'm a drone user and my overview is all drones, and the current interface is pathetically clumsy. This would be much nicer.
