Devs, do this and you kill two birds with one stone. 1) You redo the crappy interface already in place, which seriously needs a huge overhaul anyways 2) it will help declutter the already crowded overview.

Agreed.
Between my overview and the new fleet mess it's impossible to keep track of drones/assigned fighters anymore.

Agreed BUT!
Not on the right of modules, the space is many times needed for something else. It'll ruin this idea completely for some ppl. Including me who needs all the space on the right of the modules for other things.
How about just moving the module buttons just a little up leaving room for the "drone group" buttons.
Clicking on the buttons will launch the drones and turns the button green and clicking another time, it'll return them into bay, turn the button red while they're returning and then return the button back to normal when all the drones are scooped.
The above would rid us from 2 extra buttons and would be single-clickable solution thus much simpler and faster to use.
Dragging and dropping a drone button over a targeted ship would cause the drones to attack the target (even without first launching them). This would also add a tiny drone icon on the right side of the target, clicking the drone icon would make the drones to drop the target and return to orbit util you press the drone button to return them into the bay. Alternatively you could drag the same drone group over another target and the drones would move to attack the new target.
Dragging and dropping a drone button over a targeted ship WHILE your OTHER drones are attacking a target would automatically first return the drones in space into your drone bay, then launch the dragged drones and they'd attack the target you dragged your drones onto
Dragging drones from drone bay onto a drone button would group the drones onto the selected group.
So basically we don't need the extra command buttons for drones. Just the extra row of drone groups below the module buttons.

This is an AWESOME idea! I use drones quite heavily, and I agree the interface needs some drastic improvements, not to mention drone AI. With a few touchups as others have mentioned, this would kick so much ass!

I like the direction of your ideas but it would be better to stick closer to the module interface.
In that vien I'd suggest that clicking on a group causes them to attack the currently selected target and clicking again has them return and orbit, essentially just like guns.
The scoop/return to bay function (singular these should never have been seperate commands) can go on right click with a modifier click option as well. Ditto for launching a group without ordering them to attack. Remember these are less frequent actions than "go kill that".
Only remaining question is if the groups go under the module buttons where does the list of drones and health indicators go, cause we do need that.
Additionally in case it hasn't been mentioned. If a group has more drones than you can launch at once then the ones with the most remaining HP get launched. Mining drones "attack" roids.

Let me clarify couple things about this idea:
1. What if drones die, how do i launch more drones?
- You could use 'oversized' groups. Meaning that if you can control 5 drones, put 8 drones in that group. When one bites the dust, just hit launch again and dead drone gets replaced.
- Or you can simply launch drone from other group (select another group and give launch command). So you could basically have drones from more than one group out at any given time.
- Or you could go to dronebay and move ungrouped drone (or drone from another group) to that group to replace dead drone and after that, launch it.
2. I want to control indivitual drone. How i do that?
- Expand the drone group, select drones you want to give commands to, and well... give commands :)
- Or you could open dronebay and give commands from there (that was not part of the idea, but why prevent it)
- Or you could use one single group with all your drones in it if you want to micromanage your drones. Just expand that large group and go nuts.
3. I dont like the placement of drone ui, why is it eating space in right hand side of module buttons?
- That placement was just an example, theres plenty of other places on screen where that ui component can be placed. --- Get rid of those *bleep*ing secure containers. *bleep*! |

All good ideas.
You could access them throug the "Drone Icon" when you lunch 5 of them and click them there might be a "pop up" window. And if you need to lunch another drone if you lose one. you could just simply click on some other icon and it would auto lunch 1 drone into your group.
But I would like to see this. But it would be so many icons when your flying a carrier or something like that.. But this is in the right direction.. more feedbacks guys. What do you think !!! ___________________________________

I just started flying dominixes a couple of weeks back, and I've come to appreciate how painful the current drone interface is. I usually play at 1024x768, which means my module buttons stretch to the edge of the sceen and I have to squish my overview, drones, fleet window, and broadcasts menu into about 5 inches of screen space. The reason most people leave carriers at POSs or safespots is probably because you have to minimize your overview to fit the drones one your screen.
Hotkey buttons that link to my user defined drone folders would be a godsend. Detachable, moveable and customizable windows for everything would vastly impove the game's user interface.

Just an image I whipped up with another concept for where drones could go: Linkage
As you can see, there are 5 drone buttons on the right which reflect your currently launched drones. Right clicking on any button access a menu to control that drone, but also provides the "All Engage", "All Return and Orbit" and "All Return to Drone Bay" commands. Activating the buttons on a target sends the drones after that target.
The only addition is the image probably needs a small control above the buttons to manage drone groups.

Great idea.
I would personally also like to see a queue for drones to attack. As it is now, they finish attacking the target you have told them to, then go off on their own way. This is very aggravating for dealing with multiple targets, as sometimes you will have one drone each on five different targets. As it is now, guns turn off until you reactivate them, but drones do their own damn thing.
The queue does not have to be long: 1 or 2 targets. (This would prevent missioners from setting a 6 target queue and then going to get a cup of coffee.) The point is that they immediately begin engaging an arbitrary target, and you lose time telling them not to do that.

Above all other things... even without any implemintation. and I apologise for not reading most of the 2nd page of post.
The drone interface/menu as it is is TOO big, much like the way of the old gang interface/menu
What Im on about is, the 3 status bar of Shield Armor and Hull. Why dont we have that changed to what it is like for the new gang features? instead of having the 3 status bars stacks (creating more vertical height, needing more scrolling, effectivly wasting time) having them all in one line, reduces the vertical height, making the interface/menu smaller, giving you more "Overview" space.
Its worked great with the gang menu, why cant drones have the same? its basically, a mini gang in its own right with the controller as the "Commander" your drone skills = gang bonus its all the same...
Upon another note and slightly off topic (apologies there) Target identification, when you lock a target and it appears at the top of the screen, have the 3 "stacked" status bars as a line again... looks smaller making the screen seem less cluttered, as you cant click on the status indicators to "change" targets, its only a visual representation of the targets hit points.
In fact, give everything that can, a single line instead of a 3 tall stack
Ok, now ill get back to reading the rest of the second page ;p

Also, why is there a "Drones in distant space" option? Ive rarely had drones in "distant" space, and 99% of the time, that menu always says (0)drones or for a breif moment has drones in there.
Only occurance Ive had drones in distant space is when warping out they were "fighting" what ever target I had assigned them to and then... nothing, either the target or the drones were destroyed... and on the most rarest of times, which has only happened once to me is that ive warped back in and could recall said "distant" drones, but that was many many patches ago and ive been unable to recreate the situation which allowed me to do so.
In my honest opinion, I dont think we need that menu, but please, prove me wrong if people have and make an active use of this "feature" of drones in distant space.

I like this a lot. Your settings only make room for 4 groups of drones though or so which on a dominix or a carrier is not enough (I have around 19 groups in my carrier). Some way of assigning groups to the buttons is needed. [center] ¼+¼ a history |
