It looks like news of Eve's recent lag problems and CCP's attempts to 'downplay' the issue have started leaking out to a wider audience. Computer industry news site The Inquirer has posted a rather unflattering story item about it. -------------------

Eve was just a Database with a non-user friendly interface when it was playable. (ie, a game)
Being downgraded to chat room though, that is too lol.
I expect the usual CCP sycophants will be suitably outraged.

Hehe, people that know i play eve already MSNed me with this link.
TBH the article is quite spot on, at least in regards to locking the thread and lag semingly getting worse and worse by the day.
The add the alliances that have started blatantly provoking node crashes.

/me notices the "flame author" button at the bottom of that aricle.
I bet that gets a fair airing today
Theres nothing "sycophant" about enjoying a game. The lag doesn't seem to affect me that bad, except in Jita and at peak times. Play it if you enjoy it, don't if you don't. 'Tis only a game, after all -----------------------------------------------

Kind of off-topic, but whoever wrote this is a terrible writer.
Quote: CCP, the company responsible for EVE-Online, is taking a lot of flak from its players at the moment, and it's generally agreed that at the moment, the slowed-down sluggish space sim is little more than a fancypants chatroom, with lots of shiny things.
Honestly, I'd love to sit here and rip this single paragraph to shreds, but I'm at work at the Kitten-Squashing Factory, and we're behind schedule.

Edited by: VVarlord on 09/11/2006 15:00:19 1) like above posters mentioned, what kind of source is this?
2) you've got to be kidding me, over the last month or so the lag has gotten much BETTER. While it was near unplayable in a gang over five for awhile, it is easily playable in gangs of 50+ with minimal lag now.
3) eve is also a whole lot more than a fancypants chatroom, well mabye not for empire carebears Your signature is too large. Please see the Forum Rules for the limits - Serathu ([email protected])

Just to clarify, I posted the link to that story but that doesn't mean I agree with it.
Inferring that Eve is crippled by lag is pushing the bounds of accurate reporting a bit (game-killing lag is really only a factor in large fleet battles, in my experience) but that's not really the issue. If more stories like this pop up Eve could end up getting a reputation as a buggy game developed by a company that tries to suppress player complaints.
It'd be a downright shame if that happened, but more than one MMPOG has gained that sort of reputation and never recovered. I don't suppose I need to name any names... |

I think it's fair that articles criticize EVE should be posted, there's too many saying how good it is, without mentioning the problems. The lag at the moment is horrific in places, so I think some of that article is justified.

Exactly, lets not kid ourselves here. Fleetbattles are the pinnacle of EVE PvP and it has been broken since 2004.
We're now at the stage where people can pull down nodes at will, by exploiting game mechanics.
If the author of the article actually played EVE or did a little research you could make a much more solid anti-EVE case imho. And I fully understand why people would give EVE a miss in favor of other MMO's.

That's news to me.
That's all I've ever thought it was. A chat client with nice graphics and stuff going on that gives us all something in common to talk about. I've always thought it was a clever idea though - gives the game longevity.
Now if you want an even nastier (and older) review you could try and track down the one headlined "Hi ho, hi ho, I'm not an F*****g Space Dwarf". I think that was the one that described Eve as a spreadsheet simulator and complained that the font was the size of a gnat's sphincter. Sadly I can't find that now, was quite a funny review. -- (Battle hardened industrialist)

Lag in Eve doesn't seem to be any worse then any other multi player online game. I would bet that lag issues are more the result of flaky network connections then anything CCP has control over. The tubes on the Internets get clogged from time to time.

Eve always was a fancy chatroom. That is why mmorpgs are so popular, they function as chatrooms with an added game for when you dont want to talk so much.
Many is the game I have continued playing long after it stopped interesting me, because of the social aspects.

And yet...somehow...the subscription base continues to grow.
Those who have been playing Eve since its inception have heard every possible proof that Eve is a failure and a waste of time and all that good rot. And those same people have watched peak online numbers rise from 3-4k to over 30k.
Still going strong, far and away more interesting, more balanced and gosh darn it just plain better than it was 3 years ago. So keep raining all the bad news and we'll keep lovin' our game.

Actually, I love articles like this, coz I'm a selfish old veteran Eve player who doesnt like the fact that the game is being taken over by hordes and hordes of people.
I went to Jita, once. The lag was so bad, I've stayed away ever since, safely out in deep 0.0 where I hardly ever meet anyone and can kiss those gorgeous roids all on my own all day.
Hopefully all those new potential new players will read the article and stay away and we can go back to having 8K ppl on-line max ppl on-line again.
I think those strange CCP people are rich enough, already. Well done, that author!
