As much as i dont agree with the author i have to say that this is very bad press for ccp regardless, especially with a pending expansion....
It does concern me slightly

Originally by: Bombcrater It looks like news of Eve's recent lag problems and CCP's attempts to 'downplay' the issue have started leaking out to a wider audience. Computer industry news site The Inquirer has posted a rather unflattering story item about it.
presumably the author lost his ship and there were no logs on the GM side to reimburse him...?

Players in general feel shafted? You mean the few forum *****s replying to topics all day long?
Personally i don't have any issues lately, living in my nice (ya right, crap rats, crap ore, 1k pirates) little corner of the galaxy enjoying BE and such incursions.
What lag? ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I be needin' some sig love. *sigh* |

If they think 23 pages is 'humongous', they obviously didn't witness the Amarr whine thread!
Seriously though, it's just four paragraphs of exaggerated, trashy journalism that even uses its correction to take a sideswipe at EvE players.
The guy who wrote the article probably lagged out in Jita and lost a ship. I certainly detect a substantial element of biased reporting and I certainly don't believe the article is impartial.

I wouldn't worry. The people who are already playing arn't going to be swayed one way or other by any articles- they're playing, they'll make their own mind up.
And EVE doesn't NEED masive growth of the player base. Its nice, but it doesn't need it. Aslong as CCP have enough money to keep the servers running, plus a little something for themselves, EVE will live on. -----------------------------------------------

No.
The majority are attempting to ridicule the article rather than answer it
Eldo wins on that count
Personaly:
I see lots of voices on 'other' gaming forums saying there miffed off with eve's lag related issues, and are close to saying goodbye unless ccp get it under control.
I 'belive' ccp are aware of this.... hence the recent effort to boost the servers architecture with new blades,, nodes or whatever else.. along with restructing ingame content and game dynamics( i don't claim to be an expert on the techincal stuff)
The last paragraph is most revilent in answering the article in a more constructive manner.. rather than simpley trying to rubbish it in the manner many do above.
If it makes a difference or not though is another telling matter...
Hope it does...
If not.... im sure you will continue to see the guys above me continuing with the same ole tactics as described twice over. ______

The fact is, we have to put up with unstable servers and unplayable lag to the extent that would be completely unacceptable in any other game and yet very little is being done about it (although very much is promised, as usual).

Makes sense, tabloids usually dont care too much about the truth, they should do something that absolutely horrible layout though.
Admittingly their dutch version looks a lot better, the articles are horrible though, it has 50 year old with mid-life crises trying to be 'cool' written all over it. -----

It's really sweet that a lot of folks aren't bothered by lag. Maybe you're playing on some of the better nodes, maybe you just happen to play at the right time of day, or maybe you're just in denial because you love the game so much.
I've been playing for 17 months and the game performance is about the worst I've ever seen. I logged into Misaba last night and quit trying to play because the lag was so bad I could barely outfit my ship in the hangar...nothing would drag-n-drop on the first try. If I have to struggle to move things around, I sure as hell won't be able to respond properly in PVP. So I logged out and watched TV instead.
Why do so many people keep playing if the game is so bad? It's the basic hook of every MMO...the player communities are what keep people paying CCP every month. Players like to hang out with their online buddies. That and it's cheaper to pay for a year in advance than pay by the month. If I were still paying monthly, I quit for a month just to try to send the message that I'm not satisfied with the current state of performance. If they don't improve performance by the time my subscription expires, I'll take a non-paying break from the game.
Eve is a game with terrific potential, and when it's working properly, it's a joy. But it's been very frustrating lately.

Surely if the article is not true, CCP can sue the inquirer for defamation, if they are found guilty the damage award will be enough to buy hundreds of new nodes.

That assumes 'The Inquirer' is worth taking legal action against and assumes that they'll have the funds to pay any damages awarded against them. I think not.

The Inquirer has an in your face style about everything, not just Eve. I read it regularly, ignore the snarky attitude and pay attention to the root of the story. I use it as a launching point...I read about something there first and then I go looking for a more reliable source for the real scoop.
As for the sluggish pace reducing the game to a fancypants chatroom...I have to agree that's what it felt like for me last night. The chat channels were working, but the lag was bad enough that I didn't want to try flying anywhere. And you yourself agreed there's bad lag all over the place...face it, the chat channels are about the only thing you can safely use when things are bad. If the game can't even handle the chat, the server crashes. So, yeah, during bad times the game is just a chatroom with lots of shiny things that you don't dare fly because lag may get you killed.
And as for "nobody said Eve wasn't lagging"...go back and read some of the posts here and in every other thread where someone has the audacity to suggest that Eve may not be perfect. There are always players who insist there's nothing to complain about.

Huh, well I guess if the author of that article doesn't like EVE, then he is entitled to an opinion.
I am (mostly) happy with the way EVE has been working for me, but then again I haven't sold my soul to an alliance yet.

They're in the business of pleasing their readers, not the companies they write about. And they're pretty good at it, too. I don't read news much but afaik by readership tech news websites go #1 slashdot and #2 inquirer.
And the journalist who wrote that article was qualified enough that the only piece in his article that can be disputed as untruth (the fancypants chatroom bit) is passed as 'generally agreed' i.e. opinion and not a fact, protecting himself from a lawsuit.

A journalist that has to use weasel phrases such as "generally agreed" is ****. A news-site that is "in the business of pleasing their readers" is hardly an accurate source.

Well, I agree it's a crappy piece of writing and that the inquirer isn't as accurate as NYT or the economist. I was just trying to say that it was silly to dismiss a publication on a major website just because it was bad writing, the damage is done and potential subscribers are lost.
