Not sure I'm ever so happy about it- sounds like they plan on turning World Of Darkness into a MMOG. Think of the stink kicked up by the mere mention that "EVE China" might take up some developers time. All we need is another project to keep them busy, just when EVE needs them most......... -----------------------------------------------

Edited by: La Tortura on 11/11/2006 18:24:46 I have quite quite pessimistic view on this. It means that eve, probably, not so profitable for CCP, and they are looking for ways to make it more appealing for broader market with the help of USA company. God knows what they would do with eve. -- ignorance is bliss |

It's a solid move IMO, even if only from the perspective of sharing liscense rights. WW gets access to a gritty sci-fi world to develop, one which is certainly in the sort of flavor I would expect from them, and CCP gets plenty of material to work off for a second MMO. I played Jyhad (Vampire; tES for the younguns), and Rage! (wonder how many even know what this one is) back when they were released, and both hit some rough patches. Why not get the expertise of a company that has already gone through that in your corner?
We as players don't like to think in terms of Eve ending, but it will at some point, and diversifying will help carry CCP so they can develop more amazing online experiences for us to enjoy. Would anyone *not* at least check out a World of Darkness MMO developed by CCP? I know I'd be in from the start, ready to avenge Gaia .

May I point out that this isn't a true merger - it's a takeover.
I found this on the White Wolf website:
White Wolf will be operated as a wholly-owned subsidiary of CCP. Hilmar Petursson, Chief Executive Officer of CCP, will be CEO of the combined company.

Something tells me that they might be doing this so that White Wolf can make the ground-based, planetary parts of EVE to come in one of the kalis and CCP can continue to focus on the space part. I don't know though, only time can tell, this feels strange. I only hope that if they tank they don't take CCP with them. But I am sure Hillmar knows what he is doing.

I live in Canada and I heard about it only through a friend from another game. If it hadn't been for him, I probably still wouldn't know about it.
I think people dont realize that a lot of casual gamers don't suscribe to gaming mags or delve through websites to find out about games. If CCP wants more users(fix teh lag first ) they should IMO toss out another game box to the retailers. I've not seen one at the retailers here for over a year. Especially with the massive popularity WoW has brought to the mmorpg genre(no snide comments about WOW kiddies please), I dont think it would be a bad move.

I heard about EVE Online when it was still in beta, through various online sources that I'm sure many people other than me frequent. I was a p&p RPG player long before the advent of computers, MUDs, MMOGs and everything else we have today, and I know that I'm not unique. I'm that guy that tells all his friends about stuff they normally wouldn't hear about otherwise, but will be interested in. Despite EVE/CCP's humble beginnings it is doing quite well and has quite good exposure. ---------------

EVE is great cause CCP is devoted 100% to it and only it. Whatever they say, once they are bought over, it won't be true anymore. Maybe even on paper CPP will be all about EvE, but their employees will be pulled over to other projects. And the new partners will see a different vision for EVE, they will commercialize it, they will make it easier for players, remove non-consentual PVP, make it sharded, etc, etc, etc.... Not good, not good
Oh... and now watch the reps assure us that this won't happen and they will still be devoted 100%.... If they were remaining 100% devoted to EVE, there wouldn't be a need for this merge

All I can say about this is .
That came out of nowhere. Still, good deal, CCP. Though I never liked Vampire: The Masquerade, Werewolf, Mage, or the other World of Darkness tabletop RPGs, I've long had respect for White Wolf as a company. While the merger surprised me, I think it bodes well for the future - I just hope I'm around to see it, since my account's likely to be fully cancelled if the hitpoint changes stay in. -Wrayeth "Look, pa! Wrayeth, first rule of Eve is to adapt to the changes. Death to AC Tempests in Kali? Personally i think the no cap requirement will only make it better than before. Not to mention the Typhoon. And solo pvp is far from dead, but I agree its nerfed.

I'm excited about this. To me this is really good news if it doesn't go awry. WW has one of the most desirable IPs for development into an MMO, on par with Mechwarrior IMO. I can't think of a better company than CCP to turn the World of Darkness IPs into a first rate MMO. Hopefully it will also be a single server world.
CCP has always put the quality of EVE first and have invested heavily in both hardware and personel in the last few months. I don't see tham taking on a new project lightly or being unprepared for what it will take to do it well. How many times has it been bought up on these forums about just what CCP could do with a WoW budget on a new IP. Interesting times ahead.

CCP, what are you doing wasting resources buying up 2nd-rate fantasy publishers? EVE still has stability problems, dev/player interaction is at an all-time low, and you've fallen at least half a year behind schedule already on Kali expansions - all of this going on and you want to start wasting resources in another industry? Stop doing other things, slow down and focus on getting your core area right, you're neglecting it right now big-time and all the EVE novels in the world won't save you.
Let this be known as the day EVE jumped the shark, from now on they're Blizzard Mk. 2 and we're going to have to start saving up to buy pallets of cards for our HACs. ---- AUS Corp Lead Megalomanic |

Except White-Wolf doesn't have any programmers, just writers and (table top) game designers. Though their designs could easily enough be ported over to digital form, they won't be handling the software development. That's what CCP is for.

CCP bought out White-Wolf in this merger, not the other way around. White-Wolf will be making space ships long before CCP starts making World of Darkness games. CCP really does still own everything, and I can't count the number of times the reiterated that EVE is and will be CCP's main project. Infact, they said that any future development in other possible games will be based on EVE's code sets. So, CCP has an interest in EVE both as a customer product and a development platform.

It's not just the death of the AC tempest, it's also the fact that solo and very small gang PvP will be dead. That's where I derive most of my enjoyment of the game from; large gangs and fleets take too long to organize, you often don't even get any engagements, and move VERY slowly. In short, they're just not fun.
Solo and very small gang work is far more enjoyable. You're mobile, there's little waiting (which is important when you don't know how long you can be online for), and you have a much higher chance of getting an engagement in the first place.
Unfortunately, the hitpoint changes result in ridiculously increased fight durations. To begin with, a 10-minute 1-v-1 is not fun - it's boring, like watching paint dry. In real life, this wouldn't be an issue since waiting is part of life; however, in a game you're playing for fun, it's unacceptable. More important than that, though, is the fact that fights will now last so long that the target's buddies can show up to help even if they're several jumps away and in battleships. This will turn most 1-v-1's into 5-v-1's, with you on the losing end.
Simply put, these changes spell the end of my playstyle. I don't find large scale engagements fun at all, so that's not an alternative I could "adapt" to. Hence, I will have no reason to continue to play. -Wrayeth "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!"

It's really not a bad move for either company in my eyes. White Wolf's games have the "potential" to be decent MMOs for those who enjoy the genre, and I can understand why they want to try it. Who better to ask for developement help then a company that basically taught themselves everything, and doesnt answer to some larger corporate structure? (unlike sony, mythic, etc)
On CCP's side, the universe they created has a huge potential to provide science fiction stories, and with the right writers, could prove to be massively successful, white wolf offers them the way to make this begin to happen.
The move benefits both parties (obviously or they wouldnt do it) lets just hope it doenst negatively effect EvE ;)

I'm sure that you are just worried about if this will effect EVE Online in a negative way by taking away badly needed resources, as am I. However White Wolf is anything but "second-rate", and of all the P&P RPG publishers if CCP had to "merge" with anyone I would choose White Wolf over all others, with the possible exception of Chaosium (POD Pilot 1: WTF is that thing?! POD Pilot 2: Holy crap! it's an Elder God, RUN!!!). ;) ---------------
