Even though they are calling it a "merger", it looks to me by the way WW worded the announcement that CCP bought WW. Go read it and you'll see what I mean. ---------------

Uh guys - WW have categorically stated that they do not support the old WoD any more. A WoD MMO will be based on the new systems currently consisting of Vampire: the Requiem, Werewolf: the Forsaken, Mage: the Awakening and Promethean: Created (though the last one is a minor game so it's inclusion is debatable). They may also use the core WoD game and have mortals.

Yeah I think this is gonna be great. CCP can concentrate on the computergames and a well known, talented crew like WW can concentrate on the out-of-game stuff. This is imho a solid move by CCP.

So, this means: - you don't read any gaming mags - you never visit any gaming websites - you've never heard or seen anything about EVE's awards (http://www.eve-online.com/community/awards.asp)
Nope Nope Not until I downloaded Eve. If it wasn't for a brief mention on the suckboards, I would never have known to try it out.

If the new MMO they make for WhiteWolf is completely unliked by the EVE community, it doesn't matter, because they are tapping into a new market. Hopefully they will expand and hire new people to build the new MMO, while keeping the current devs on EVE. -- The universe is governed by the aggressive use of force. Hows this for a little note! I would like to see what White-Wolf can add to the Eve universe. These guys have some awesome writers and artists. They have fully populated the World of Darkness 3 times now I think. Their city books and other source guides are full of really amazing content.
I hope we are gonna get some really amazing chronicles out of them. Hopefully, they will be able to contribute to the evolving EVE in game story as well. The CCP guys are building us some really cool systems with the factional warfare stuff. If the White-Wolf merger provides more writers and content creators for the ongoing EVE storyline, I think it will be amazing.

Although I had no idea who White Wolf was, or what it did, I can't say this is a bad idea, as it'll increase awareness of Eve Online to those people that MIGHT try it if they were aware of it.
This is to say that CCP's advertising and promotion of Eve is lamentable. In the UK there is zero Game Time cards available and nothing at all in stores. People working in gamer stores are more likely to recommend WoW, than Eve, even if you say you're into sci fi. Actually they're more likely to suggest Matrix online, than Eve-online, simply because they don't know enough. And that can be laid at the feet of CCP for not getting their advertising machine out there.
I'm also not sure what happens to email sent to [email protected] because I haven't received a reply from either emails I sent yet. Should I hold my breathe I wonder?
If this merger gets more promotional activities in the UK amongst potential players and retail bases that will supply Eve related products and game time cards/codes I'm all for it, but I'm not going to hold my breath.

Stunning news! Has the development of a World of Darkness MMORPG been confirmed? So far, all I have is the press release, which talks about an "online game"... for what I know, it could be a 16-players FPS. Originally by: Taran Blake Seriously, a World of Darkness MMORPG is something that very few EVE players would ever consider.
Exactly! That's why it's a smart move. What's the point of making a second game that appeals to the fan base of your first game? They'd be competing with themselves. The wise move is to make a second game that appeals to a whole different crowd, and "The World of Darkness Online" is perfect. Originally by: Sliver Jade White Wolf is a horrible RPG company. I don't see this as a good thing at all.
Wow. If WW is a bad RPG company, I'd really like you to name a single good RPG company.

Then again, provided Kali turns out to be a net awesome, I am unworried.

Edited by: Driven on 12/11/2006 01:52:40 Don't drink the corporate koolaid just yet.
We have NO idea about the real capital structure of this deal. Given the guesstimated relative revenue sizes of these two companies, my suspicion is this is much more of an acquisition than it is a "merger".
Hilmar is to be the CEO of the combined entity which is a good sign.
However, be wary.
I have been involved in 7 corporate acquisitions on one side or the other. In every case, things change noticeably and usually within months. They either get much better or much worse.
One thing is for sure: If the CCP management team does not keep their eye on the ball, it will get worse, and fast. I've seen it first hand in a company their size and it isn't pretty, especially with a small company operating outside their area of expertise.

The WoD Online game won't be based on the old WoD. Meaning it'll be based on Requiem and thus be utter, complete trash. F'that. If it was the OWoD, I'd be all over it in a second, but it won't be. I'm just glad to see the crap company WW has become actually get bought out by an amazingly good one that might be able to bring something good from it.

As another player of various White Wolf games, I can only see good coming of this for both companies.
White Wolf's intellectual property will finally get the proper support it needs to thrive in the computer gaming world. CCP will really be able to get things to shine in the computer world.
CCP will now get some serious support of the Eve universe hopefully. The fiction CCP has already is quite good, but very fractured and hard to piece together fully into a cohesive story of the different races. Hopefully White Wolf will really get the story of Eve into that next level and really bind it all together and give it the life it has been missing somewhat.
That, and having an experienced in-house publishing group can possibly mean some great novels and stuff in the future as well.

Edited by: Wolfways on 12/11/2006 03:22:46 I'll just post what i said on the WW forums.
I'm an EVE player and long time fan of the old WoD (Might try the new WoD someday but can't afford it just now)
Anyway, i remember how horrified i was the day it was announced that the old WoD was ending and i remember it even more clearly now as i felt that again today seeing the anouncment of the merger of WW and CCP. I've always had a lot of respect for WW for making great games that concentrate on the emotional side of roleplaying more than the hack n' slash, but i think if an MMO is made based on the WoD all that will be tossed aside. As much as i like EVE i have to say that the game is rampant with the "I WTFBBQPWNED u nOOb!!1one" crowd.
I was hesitant to play Star Wars Galaxies at first because i knew the players would ruin the atmosphere, but eventually i gave in and played. It was worse than i thought (SOE's driving the game into the ground aside). While i dearly would love to play a garou (or whatever they're called now) online, unless the game was rp enforced (i.e. no weird names, no OOC, etc) then the game would just be players running around killing each other, and that in my opinion is just not worthy of a WW game.
While companies release single-player game by the boatload, releasing an MMO is like standing infront of the gaming community and saying "Look at us. This is what we can do." If the game sucks then it can seriously damage the company's reputation (look at SWG/SOE)
If CCP are to release a good WoD MMO i'd say they have a huge project and many many years of work ahead of them.

I don't see a downside here. CCP had extra cash so they bought a company that can handle the new card game and all of the spin off materials like comics, novels, collectables and short story publishing that is starting to be generated by Eve.
What I want to know is now that the company has a presence in the US does this mean that I can order Eve swag from WW without paying the ungodly postage.

We now have 5 pages of speculation about this deal and not one post from a dev.
I learned about it from an e-mail from a third party MMO site, over 7 hours ago.
Is someone from CCP going to tell us wtf is going on?
I realize that the game has gotten bigger. Too big for Devs to address every single lag b*tch and griefer whine but ffs, your biggest fans are here wondering what is happening to the game that they love and have supported for years.
There was a time when the players felt a part of the team.
A hint plz?

I'm very excited about this deal. White Wolf has some connections to very talented writers that could fit the EVE universe very well. Greg Stolze, Carl Bowen, and Richard Dansky immediately spring to mind, with the latter already having experience in game content writing for Red Storm/Ubisoft.

There's also litigation to consider. On watching TV and CCP's CEO having a moan about American corporate law. It's perfectly possibly this merger has been mutually arranged so CCP can work on the WoD code and WW can work on EVE IP.
I've trucked with WW for years now, although personally I believe the P&P RPG should of been handled by Steve Jackson and the GURPS system, CCP confirmed it themselves with the shear amount of information and potential avenues of profit for them.
CCP's artists have already created a wealth of content that WW will help package up and distribute to the masses, more exposure for EVE as well as more profit for CCP.
As for the WoD crowd: well, they're wary as well. Most have never heard of CCP games or EVE before so are probably treating the merger as a worrying thing too.
My hope here is that WW either use the ST system or generate something new for the EVE RPG. To balk out and make it d20 would just doom the project, not to mention me bringing a sawn-off shotgun to next fanfest. (yee haa gonna collect me som heads!!)
WW will be dallying with the Living elements of EVE all the stuff that's not in code because of the game mechanics. Going to a bar, exploring technology, landing on planets, etc. However, there could be things fleshed out by WW that will have positive impact on EVE itself. Afterall, CCP HAVE stated they want full Avatar representation for EVE characters. Working on the WoD online will allow them to code for this too. Not to mention some possible changes like adding crews and other "fluff" material that merely expand and give the Eve universe more depth.

Having heard of WW before eve, though never really exploring there products very much (not too big of a fan of vampires here), they sure seem to be a company that if alternatives where given, CCP sure chose the right rpg developers to merge (buy out) with.
I just hope that like others have mentioned, each keeps to their own respective expertise and simply complements in the production of the two products. Bringing in so much new art and writing talent for the EVE universe would be utterly amazing. the art as it stands now is one of my favoritve aspects, and for the chance of it to expand would rock my socks at least
all should be good just as long as ccp doesn't end up diverting too many resources to a vampire MMO, or other non game related ventures *crosses fingers*

As stated, this is years away yet... and to be frank what the heck would a designer/coder who codes physics of lasers and designs pictures of 2km starships know about Leather capes, top hats, Dominate, Celerity, Potence, and other snazzy cool WW stuff?

Sure it's years away, yes, but what, as Oveur kept on saying during the presentation, EVE is planned up to at least 10 years from now, 25 at best, right?
And when it comes to coding starships versus vampires, i'm sure the designers of the other WW computer RPG's didn't know that much after there last project, and besides, it's more that likely any technical knowledge that is needed, not so much the background. As important as that is for a deep understanding of the game, that can be learned pretty quick I'm sure.
When it comes to the art, absolutely there are major differences in the theme, but the general dark and brooding atmosphere is what i was alluding to. Both sides have great atmosphere in their artwork, and to see the addition of the WW art team in some of the work on eve would be quite awesome.
Yes I may be simplifying things tremendously, and many apoligizes for that, but when it comes to a dark, brooding, depressing atmosphere, the artisits seem to have that down quite well, and to jump from vampires to spaceships doesn't seem to be that immense of a leap for those with that much talent.
for people that skilled, to be able to work in mutliple genre's is a given i'm sure
