I think my favorite part of the keynote speech other than the blockbuster announcement was of Hillmar's statement which puts to rest (in my mind) the fact that EVE is not a game. It is, rather, a VR world with depth, meaning, and persistence.
Coupling that with the WW aquisition/merger, those who are into the WOD setting are going to be in for an amazing treat.
While I personally will be with EVE until it shuts the doors or decides to do some hairbrained thing like making it "vista/ms only" (not worried about that.), those who want another genre' with OUR sandbox are in for a wild ride.

Umm... yeah...
You're with the wrong gaming company. Neither White Wolf nor CCP Games deal with character levels. Both deal with skill levels. White Wolf skill system is very similar to CCP's, although you gain experience points per gaming session instead of over time. Criteria for getting these points are that you: participate, act well, do something heroic/devilish, contribute extraordinarily to the story, etc. Each skill level cost a number of experience points according to what level you currently have, although CCP Games do 5.66x cost of previous, White Wolf tend to do 2x +1 cost. - EVE is sick. |

WW was that >< close from being a goner. Okay, maybe like > <. But they had quite some problems lately due to mostly busted projects.
ccp desparately needs people professionally and passionately doing high quality storyline work on EVE and people who know how to design an UI. Maybe they grabbed some remains of Troika with the deal as icing on the cake?
The merge *cough* looks like a pretty logical move to me.
Maybe someone finds a way to stop ccp from pushing EVE into the console style game. --*=*=*--
The cause for this is not yet known, but we do have a possible fix in testing. by Sharkbait | 2006.09.20 |

This is really interesting, and opens up a lot of new possibilities.
What I am wondering about the most is acctually wether or not this means that we will see a WOD MMORG being developed. Now that would be an incredibly interesting project, and let's face it, every major franchise is breaking into MMORPGs. DnD, Warhammer, Startrek, Lord of the Rings - names like that sell, and from what I know the bloodsuckers aren't on board yet. (Let's just hope werewolves aren't as f***ing overpowered as in the PnP)
As far as other games set in New Eden being developed, I really dislike the way roleplaying games are marketed, by splitting up all the important info into many many books so that at one point in time or another the complete game will cost you roughly $1000 that kind of sneak out of your pocket one innocent little extra book at a time...

Good news. Earlier this week i saw some forum parts in wich they suggested that EA was about to overtake CCP. EA is quite ok but all their games have a similair feel to it. And however much I love my sims I surely would not want to see Eve have that simmy feeling to it since it would ruin the game. If there was any real danger behind the suggestions posted earlier this week surely this merge and the resulting bigger company could easier protect itself against a takeover from the big (to big) companies.

Ok, to people worried about ww.... they rock, produce the best rpg's I've played. too the ww fan who said that requiem is trash... i've played both and requiem is much much better. better system, better backstory and no metaplot. personally I hope they make it a warewolf game as I can see that working much better anyway. It all looks good to me, although I share the concerns that eve will be badly effected (and vice versa, I love ww too)

For sarcasm to strike true, it needs to be loaded with truth and it need to be aimed.
That Dungeons and Dragons is dominant in the genre of fantasy role playing does not mean that every fantasy role playing game has levels based on shooting nor do they all contain orcs/orks.
I wish you better aim next time. - EVE is sick. |

This is good news for me, as EVE will finally get alot more backing merchandise by the looks of it, I am especially interested in the mention of a paper based EVE rpg (though it better not be about Pod-Pilots... who the hell do you roleplay that offline?).
But yeah the old WoD was a very over-played, bordering on ######### roleplaying system, the new WoD is just amazing, and if they can take even 10% of the depth of those games, and apply it to the already rich world of EVE, I think we are in for some quality storylines/events....
You never know, maybe WW will bring the Amar a new Emperor atlast!

I always think "oh no not another know it all" when I see computer programers comment on lag and serve issues due to industry insight. But heck after 10 years in the RPG, CCG and board games retail industry I can finally get my own back.
So here's an insight into what my shop has seen retail wise is the South West UK in the last few years and how the merger might affect what we do. It should also be noted that trends in gaming vary massively by location so not all my experience will match what you see in your area's.
RPG's in general have been in decline for the last couple of years. This is largely due to fewer players coming into the hobby and established players stopping mostly due to swell of people playing MMORPG's. Many existing RPG players are finding less time to roleplay due to marriage and families etc.
WWP had in the old Vampire system a very popular game and it competed well with AD&D as was. The vampire players were a very loyal group and supported WWP with consistent high sales. However the new WOD system has not taken off and we get sales of 15% approx of what we used to.
The reasons we think are varied. Alot of the original Vampire players quitting due to resentment of new system and not wanting to have to start from scratch again. Many groups still play the old system as they have a stack of old material they havent played yet, such was WWP's output.
On the plus side WWP's new edition of Exaulted has done remarkably well and has considerably improved the system.
The vampire CCG never did well here as the target market stuck with the RPG.
It should be noted that the CCG market (much like the MMORPG market) has been a hard one to ***** for most companys. M:TG remains the market leader for us with sales in a constantly younger market (14 - 24 yo's), with Yu-gi-oh and Pokemon attracting the the younger fans (5 - 14 yo's). Sadley those are the only 3 CCG that we can consistantly stock on the back of solid sales.
The new WOW CCG sold out with in 5 days and poor production means no new supply until December. Sales are I believe artificaly high as many WOW players are collecting them only for cosmentic buff loot cards rather than to play.
The EVE CCG looks great (we kindly got sent some promo's) but those EVE players I know who shop here all rather play eve than play the card game (understandably?). I sadley am still waiting for a none EVE player to ask about it. Fortunately having spoken to my distributors recently they had sold out of certain elements of the EVE CCG (so its doing ok generally I think) and had particularly nice things to say about the CCP staff they have dealt with.
A World of Darkness/Vampire MMORPG would certainly have a fan base and the EVE sandbox model does lend itself nicely to the idea. Alliances, Clans and tribes are not all that dissimilar in terms of structure and territorry and it does lend itself very wel to the EVE Pvp model. The question would be which game world to implement - old or new?
The possibilty of an EVE miniatures game sounds promising although I suspect alot will collect rather than play (model eve ships on the desk at work would be fun). But having seen the new ships for Star Wars miniatures game an EVE game would have very fierce competion.
So in conclusion I think CCP should have a great deal of caution when considering entering the already shrinking RPG market. They should certainly consider giving the collectable (quality) side of any miniatures game a much higher priority than is often done by the industry. We will have to wait and see where the CCG is in a years time. A possible Vampire MMORPG seems to be the most promising idea as it could capture those players already quitting the RPG version.

Is someone from CCP going to tell us wtf is going on?
I realize that the game has gotten bigger. Too big for Devs to address every single lag b*tch and griefer whine but ffs, your biggest fans are here wondering what is happening to the game that they love and have supported for years.
There was a time when the players felt a part of the team.
A hint plz?
