It's not just the death of the AC tempest, it's also the fact that solo and very small gang PvP will be dead. That's where I derive most of my enjoyment of the game from; large gangs and fleets take too long to organize, you often don't even get any engagements, and move VERY slowly. In short, they're just not fun.
Solo and very small gang work is far more enjoyable. You're mobile, there's little waiting (which is important when you don't know how long you can be online for), and you have a much higher chance of getting an engagement in the first place.
Unfortunately, the hitpoint changes result in ridiculously increased fight durations. To begin with, a 10-minute 1-v-1 is not fun - it's boring, like watching paint dry. In real life, this wouldn't be an issue since waiting is part of life; however, in a game you're playing for fun, it's unacceptable. More important than that, though, is the fact that fights will now last so long that the target's buddies can show up to help even if they're several jumps away and in battleships. This will turn most 1-v-1's into 5-v-1's, with you on the losing end.
Simply put, these changes spell the end of my playstyle. I don't find large scale engagements fun at all, so that's not an alternative I could "adapt" to. Hence, I will have no reason to continue to play.
Wray wray, don't derail the thread.
Keep in mind that hit point changes are still going to be tweaked, they even said as much during the broadcast... and for the very same reasons you mentioned. They are evaluating how the changes affect play on the test server and will make tweaks according to the data they are collecting... so don't sell your account yet.
Besides, I still owe you one from the other day.

Sorry, I'm just bummed because it's starting to feel like SWG around here. You could protest the changes that ultimately screwed you as much as you wanted, but to no avail. Your playstle would still be destroyed in the end.
Quote: Keep in mind that hit point changes are still going to be tweaked, they even said as much during the broadcast... and for the very same reasons you mentioned.
Heh. I didn't even know there was a broadcast about this. Was it a live-only thing, or is it something we can download? I'd very much like to hear it.

Well, that's hopeful at least. I'm just worried that the devs' marked preference for fleet combat will mean that they won't find enough wrong to bother revoking the hitpoint increase.
Ah, well. I hope I'm wrong on this, I really do.
Quote: Besides, I still owe you one from the other day.
True, that. I've tried to get my alliancemates to do another run into M-O when I'm online, but they keep saying, "No, we must fight the war targets, even when they won't undock". Hehe
Um...back on topic:
I really don't think the buyout of White Wolf will have any negative effect on EVE - I can't see anything that White Wolf brings to the table that would be a liability given their strength in the tabletop RPG market. -Wrayeth "Look, pa! I just contributed absolutely nothing to this thread!"

I've already ended up saying what I think in several places before the forums would load so I'm not about to blah blah any further. I'll just say that as CCP seem to be the controlling factor, I'm sure EVE Online will be in safe hands and that if anything, White Wolf will be given the kick up the rear it so desperately needs. Besides, it doesn't seem to be a total absorption. Unless CCP are packing up shop from Reykjavik (or White Wolf from Atlanta) and shifting continents then likely it'll just mean more conference calls and internet communications.
Personally, I think an EVE RPG would be cool if done right

The part that really stuck out in my mind is when the CCP CEO referred to their "core competencies," or something of that nature.
That tells me that they are making a sound business decision that will do good for both companies, and I think that this will create some very positive results. -- The universe is governed by the aggressive use of force. It isn't lacking in marketing? I live in Norway, and I've seen ZERO EVE-O ads. ZERO retailers selling the game. And so on. On the other hand, I know a lot of people who read sci-fi novels and manga. This might get them interested in the game. So yeah, the player base might increase.

Edited by: SoulBlythe on 11/11/2006 22:35:21 I have spent many years independently writing/designing for P&P RPG companies, magazines, and websites. Of all of them, White Wolf have been the best to me professionally and as a fan. This merger is two companies coming under one house. Neither is stopping work on their individual IP and hopefully will be building a better gaming experience for us both. White Wolf has some great talent in there fiction writers, game designers, and overall staff. They are always the most receptive to there peers and fans at conventions and truely have a love for there fan-base, which reminds me of CCP. Maybe this will bring even more talent to our Chronicles, event staff, storyline writers, mission writers, and generally improve our PvE experience in the already rich PVP enviroment.
Before we all jump to conclusions, lets see where this road leads.
I for one would jump at the chance to work at a CCP Atlanta Office.... even if it was in my primary line of work as a chef.

They didn't sell out, they absorbed a well known company to compliment their franchise.
Personally this move is very intersting. Eve has always suffered lack of exposure to markets, word of mouth and occasional adds for people that spend too much time on the net like myself is about it. Expanding into the RPG/literature arena will introduce many younger players to the EVE universe. Likewise, many people don't play the online game that would play a RPG, hence more money for ccp to develop both.
I play with a vampire group every sat night, and of them only myself plays eve, the others tried and quit. We have kicked around creating an eve game though, because the hands on aspect apeals to them. Eve online is very distanced, you never touch anything, never even see your character unless it's on a bio file. Eve RPG would be the chance to get your hands dirty, interact with the crew, take a fighter out for a spin, engage in intrigue, or just have a bar brawl.
A world of darkness MMOG by CCP? Time for the kindred to take a bite out of Blizzards market share, a fatal bite at that.
It's great being Amarr, ain't it?

Ok, I'm a bit worried. EVE rocks, yes, but White Wolf is a legend and knows more about role-playing games than the CCP ever has to this point. If this starts to negatively influence the games WW published (Exalted, etc), I'll be seriously ****ed off -- because when all is said and done, those games wipe the floor with EVE on the rpg arena.
I really, really hope that this is just normal corporate bull****, and the people in charge will continue to focus on what the separate companies do best. Because let's face it... CPP doesn't know **** about rpg games, and WW doesn't know **** about online games.

CCP merged with white wolf because they want to bring more back story etc into eve. They didn't merge with white wolf so they could write their own RP stuff...eve pen and paper game sounds fun as well. MY thoughts on Kali |

Seriously, a World of Darkness MMORPG is something that very few EVE players would ever consider.
But the WoW crowd? That is a completely different matter. It is a threat to every other Fantasy MMORPG out there.
Think about the core systems: - Vampire: The Masquerade - Werewolf: The Apocalypse - Mage: The Ascension - Changeling: The Dreaming - Demon: The Fallen - Hunter: The Reckoning - Wraith: The Oblivion - Mummy: The Resurrection - Kindred of the East
You have the entire back story there just waiting to be made into an online world.

I see this as a solid marketing move. White Wolf has already in place the infastructure for production and if I wanted a RPG put out by a group of solid people that know there stuff White Wolf would be the company I go to.
Either way I belive in the States White Wolf already has the distribution rights for the CCG for EVE. Them mergeing with White Wolf makes a logical step to keep prices down. Just on top of that you gain a nice little bonus on top of it with the advertiseing revenue you can save plugging EVE stuff throughout White Wolf's other materials.
For a company like White Wolf to survive you need to have marketing sense and much of the Pen and Paper RPG market collapsed in the late 90's and White Wolf and Wizards of the Coast are in my eyes the main two that survived (Though WOTC was bought out by Hasbro).
We in the US have griped that CCP didn't have a means to advertise in the US very well and now they do. They're bettering the servers as best as they can and in the process getting the resources together to make our experience in EVE that much of a deeper experience.
One side you have CCP who have a great artist team who can pull together designs that are awe inspireing along with basic ideas on what they want from this and then you have White Wolf who can take the basic ideas and principles and expand on it even further.
An example of this is for those that are into the in depth reading imagine White Wolf taking on each race in EVE and expanding on the basic history we know since the time of the EVE Gate Collapse.
Going into details of how the population degenerated before learning Spaace Flight again and also seriously expanding on the Jove Empire.

Sounds like a good fit, if nothing else both companies seem to be on roughly same page when it comes to style. White Wolf's should fit right in. Gritty, darkish tones.
As for CCP selling out, at a quick glance it seems they bought out White Wolf. The World of darkness is one of the more valuable RPG properties around, so not a bad plan if you're looking for some IP to produce a mmorpg out of. And judging by how EVE turned out CCP's a good company for doing it, seeing as how EVE is relatively harsh and uncompromising all things considered when they could've just gone Disney on us. Can preserve the dark and gritty feel better than most game companies.
Good for CCP. If it was good for White Wolf remains to be seen.

That's just the thing. Compared to the two, I'd much, much rather see CCP go bankrupt that see White Wolf go down. CCP is just another computer game company, White Wolf is... well, White Wolf. It's a legendary company.
I'm very, very worried about my favorite rpg company becoming just a shell company that churns out EVE support stuff, instead of cool stuff like Exalted 2nd edition books etc. White Wolf selling out like this is sad.
