So many people complain about alts and people not having the guts to post with their main, but to me the only stupid people are the ones who post with their main. There are some very important exceptions -- recruiting, corp/alliance public relations, defending against accusations, etc -- but 95% of the time you have much more to lose than gain from posting with your main.
A few of the risks: Making enemies with your viewpoint / metagame. Angering your corp / alliance for disagreeing with them or making them look stupid. Drawing unnecessary attention to yourself -- potential for wardecs / griefing / etc.
So, to those people who hate alts posting here, what's the point? The forum is not Eve; it could disappear tomorrow and the game would go on.
Another prominent exception would be those characters who already have a high profile and don't post controversially views.

Forums are part of your reputation - so as long as one behaves like person with brains there is no reason to not post with main. People dont get wardecks for their personal views in game unless they run around trolling and smacking. Or waving around with just big ego.
And having reasonable name in forums will sure help a bit on recruitment and other 'public' acitivities also I imagine.

I used to think this was going to be a problem but for the most part people are being very civil about disagreements, or there are just bigger asshats in the box.

I don't see a problem with those points tbh.
Now if people did grow a spine and stopped hiding behind alts this forum would be a much better place.

I only post with my main and I care less of what posters think about me. If griefers or e-nasties think I am an eVe-bear so be it. It is not like their views can hurt me. Edited by: Topaz Skydiver on 23/04/2007 12:10:23 I agree with the OP. That's why I don't care about some whines about alt-posts. Some people have a problem to see the difference between ic and ooc and a strange perception what their business is and what not. I want to make it easier for them, so I always post with the char that I find appropriate.
And before someone points to the alt-rules: The alt rules are clear. Alts in 1-man corps have the same rights to post like any other char and are under the same rules like the no trolling rule. Trolling != alt-posting, so my posts are usually within the rules.
Btw. I bet that I get my first forum warning with my main, because he is my flaming char.

Easy, you are either in the wrong corp/alliance and should leave if you have such a different point of view or you are just a jerk and can't help posting and should be kicked from your corp/alliance.

These are the EVE Online forums, not 4chan.
Anonymous is not legion here.
Posting with your main means you have the balls to back up your opinion.
If you're posting with an alt, it is clear that you do not trust your own words enough to back them up with your own name, and so they are meaningless.

This is my "main", and for a long time only active account. I do have a secondary account nowadays, but I wouldn't call it "alt", it's just a different main, for less carebearish purposes as my "primary main". That one doesn't go around posting in forums, it has nothing to say. Call it EVE multiple personality syndrome, byt "my alt" has no bussiness with "my main" and vice-versa
I think I angered quite a few people already with the posts I made with this account (and made several others happy, but that's another issue)... still, I yet have to see any actual in-game hostility for that. Well, ok, it's never been about politics, just about gameplay mechanics and ship fitings, so I guess that doesn't bother people enough for a wardec.
If anthing, I'd like to see a "Post Anonymously" option in the forum instead of having a whole different alt for it... with options to select what extra data you want posted about you (race, corp, alliance) in "Anon" mode. _ MySkills | Module/Rig stacknerfing explained |

#1. More enemies? Is that even possible?
#2. Dont be in alliances you disagree with in the first place. Take "Faceless Pokemon" as an example. #2.a: Also, learn to recognise flamebait/trolling aimed at your alliance and simply do not respond, instead have a good laugh/angry rant on your corp internal forums. Then go out and kill some ships, it works wonders. (perhaps refraining from responding to trollage is too much for some people)
#3 Let them come. I never make a statement on these boards that I am unwilling to back up with force. See point 2.a.
Sometimes things people write in CAOD is enough to really and truly **** me off, however I dont post a flaming response by reflex like some here do. Instead I go out and kick a puppy.
Far too many people want to smacktalk with no consequence. Thus the alt crop remains bountiful despite every attempt to eradicate it. I will state it now and forever: "ALT POSTERS ARE COWARDS, STUPID AND FULL OF HOT AIR" Now dec us, please.

Only time I don't post with my main is when the content of my post might provide information about me, my corp, or my alliance, that I don't want external parties to have. If I'm asking about a megathron fitting, then that's not really secret intel I'm bothered about. Anything that might clue someone in as to a tactic, plan, or project, then I pull an alt out of the box and post with him instead. __________________________________________________

This is a game. Consequences for actions on the forums take place in game. You do not need someone's real life info in order to do that.

This is the kind of post that prompted me to start this thread. If people want to post with a 'main', go for it, but I stick by my original claim that the vast majority of people have absolutely nothing to gain from it and some risk.
What can the average young player gain from posting here with a main?
What can the average corp gain from having a bunch of their members posting? Maybe if they're all real nice and helpful, it helps with recruiting and politics (but maybe not, if they're helping other corps too much).
