Originally by: Zee Zen I was trying to explain EVE to a female friend and I couldn't sufficiently explain why so many guys play as females. It's one aspect that turned her off to the game and people who spend a lot of time playing. Sure, her opinion might change if she played it, but it was frustrating to not have a strong explanation.
In other games where you can see below shoulder level and can dress up in various more or less revealing clothing, it makes sense that players may want to be attracted to the player they're staring at constantly. But EVE relies so heavily on relationships and you pretty much never see yourself, what's the point here?
It's been discussed here before how being a female can result in other players (they probably fall for a lot of scams) being more generous or forgiving. Most players it seems don't think in terms of male or female. Everyone's just a 'he' or an 'it', at least until they tell you otherwise.
I'm certainly glad for the diversity -- ambulation will suck if a large part of the potential diversity of the population were eliminated. And the real females probably appreciate it too, as they are less likely to be harassed.
This is a fantasy game and it's fun playing the part of someone very different from your real life self. You could ask whether you would, for example, PVP someone in real life too. Personally, it would be really cool to web someone's Porsche or pop a Hummer with a Heavy Missile. Or even magically transport someone home (pod them) when they're taking a shortcut through your neighborhood. (Assuming they're consenting, of course, like in a sporting event.)
Every common in-game goal seems common in real life: accumulating wealth, acquiring power, gaining new skills, controlling territory, being a valued member of a team, creating valuable goods from raw materials, etc. This one aspect doesn't seem to have a common parallel, unless the number of men with this fantasy is rather high...
If you don't want to wear women's underwear in real life, why do it here?
I had someone explain this sort of situation in an interesting way; if you are going play a game for 6 hours a day, 5 - 6 days a week, to you want to stare at a guy's face or a girls face?

Gender seems to matter a lot less in eve because we act as ships or pods, and interact by text. Even when I've heard people's voices on TS, I don't mentally associate them with the portraits.

to be political correct, you know that womans always talking about man having all the good jobs etc, well pod pilot is the highest and to not offend them since it is primarely guys playing, some bodi is forced to play as a female so it looks like its a equely possesed job by both man and womans :P ;) ___________________________________________ Humans take everything that is beautiful and sweet and turn it into something horrifying and ugly.

Depending on the geek level of your wife, it could be a reference to either B'elanna Torres in Star Trek: Voyager or Lt. Belena Torres in NYPD Mounted. Both played by Roxann Dawson.

For me it's roleplaying. I always thought that if I was really going to fly a ship in space, it would have to be the Nadesico. Plus, in the anime the character I'm named after is literally described as being able to plug herself into the ship to make it run, which seemed like a perfect fit for EVE.
Besides, if you show me a male WoW character with huge muscles and big swords, I'll show you the skinniest kid in his class. Avatars mean precisely nothing in a game where you play as a ship, not a character.

In various games, either pen & paper or on PC or online, I've played Paladins, Priests, Samurai, Rogues, Illusionists, Necromancers, Mercenaries, Hit-men, Rock musicians, Drug dealers, Starship captains.... why it is weird that I would play some of them as a woman?

Why do I play a female character? Semi-roleplay, I guess.
It's not for me to ogle at a pair of polygonal boobs, that's for sure, and it sure as hell isn't to give anyone else a pair to ogle at.
(Trying to find the best way to explain it...)
Basically, when the EVE client asks me to create a character, that's what I do. Create. I don't just let the randomly-chosen option decide and leave the character in its default pose (ergo staring straight at the camera) nor do a make the character look as ****ty or psychotic as possible, with the eyes rolled back to create that 'no-pupils' look, which I personally find lame, I work on the face until I think it looks good, then set up a nice, slightly dramatic pose - Wondering what's caught this character's eye, by the way?
In-game, I just be myself. I don't act 'girly' at all nor do I flirt with anyone, yet if I fail to reveal that I am a bloke... well, the dirty minds seem to kick in.
(You know, that's probably why some of my posts get misconstrued as personal attacks and trolling. I'm too 'to the point', I suppose)

The only place where portraits matter in EVE is the forums. In game you might as well not have one. I'd be for the removal of them entirely... but then I think we would loose initial subscriptions because people think it matters before they start playing in earnest. ----

Haha, ugly ftw! I spent ages trying to do something with this face, but finally just gave up. Also, the dev responsible really messed up the hairdo choices. How can you have a monk without him being bald! Give me bald heads for monks, dammit! I demand a razor for me head!
What's this "fely"? I don't understand the reference.
Not a lot of people would...
Cheeky little...
Uh, I play a woman in games because I have done for the last 5 years... I made up the name 'Felysta Sandorn', played it in a game and someone said 'bit girly for a guys name isnt it?' so I changed to a female avatar... Think that was in Star Wars: Jedi Knight or some other multiplayer FPS...
Anyway, Felysta is a unique name, I made it up, no-one else has it, so it's mine! If you see anyone in any other game called 'Felysta', it's either me, or I am their idol...
There is/was also a character in EVE called 'Felysta Sandornss' that was pretending to be me, so they got promptly petitioned and sued for identity theft...
Plus I wish I was a woman!
Also, if your friend is put off because some men make female avatars, she's an idiot... I know women that play this game that have male characters and female characters. You could ask yourself 'what makes women play this game with a male avatar?' the answer would be the same: 'who cares?!'
The good thing about MMOGs is that you have no idea who you're playing with most of the time! And that's a good thing! I used to play PlanetSide with two people in the Iraqi military who have fought against the British... Does that make a difference in game? No! I've played WoW with people half my age with twice my skill... Does that make a difference in game? No! (although they do go to bed earlier than me)... Sex? Race? Who cares! Just play the game!

Shims don't bother me. I don't play looking for a hook up. That said, members of my corp do have issues with it, and its a stated rule on joining that your toons have to match your gender.
Do I look down on someone for playing cross gender? Nope, I even know women who play men to avoid the neverending evolution of the a/s/l game.
So to me, if the avatar's female, I address you as female until I learn otherwise. Its no big thing for me to be told in a chat that a fem-toon is a dude at the keyboard, I've been around too long to be shocked by it anymore.
This is my sig, there are many others just like it. With me, my sig is worthless. Without (or with even) my sig, I am worthless... |

Where are these women you speak of and how can I meet them?
As far as my own avater, it kind of has to be a guy, since "Bishounen" means "Pretty Boy" in Japanese. I chose it because it's unique, and very few guys would willingly refer to themselves as "pretty boys" so it's almost always available when I want to sign up for something. (yes, I'm a guy)
Although I do get some funny looks now and again from guys like Backdoor Bandit...

a) Women are beautiful, Men are not (most of them). I usually choose a female avatar in most mmorpgs, unless RP reasons lead me to another choice.
b) The avatar is not your RL persona. Because someone has a hooded amarr, he is no monk in RL. ;)
c) Yes, maybe I would like to be a woman in RL, who knows?
