I was trying to explain EVE to a female friend and I couldn't sufficiently explain why so many guys play as females. It's one aspect that turned her off to the game and people who spend a lot of time playing. Sure, her opinion might change if she played it, but it was frustrating to not have a strong explanation.
In other games where you can see below shoulder level and can dress up in various more or less revealing clothing, it makes sense that players may want to be attracted to the player they're staring at constantly. But EVE relies so heavily on relationships and you pretty much never see yourself, what's the point here?
It's been discussed here before how being a female can result in other players (they probably fall for a lot of scams) being more generous or forgiving. Most players it seems don't think in terms of male or female. Everyone's just a 'he' or an 'it', at least until they tell you otherwise.
I'm certainly glad for the diversity -- ambulation will suck if a large part of the potential diversity of the population were eliminated. And the real females probably appreciate it too, as they are less likely to be harassed.
This is a fantasy game and it's fun playing the part of someone very different from your real life self. You could ask whether you would, for example, PVP someone in real life too. Personally, it would be really cool to web someone's Porsche or pop a Hummer with a Heavy Missile. Or even magically transport someone home (pod them) when they're taking a shortcut through your neighborhood. (Assuming they're consenting, of course, like in a sporting event.)
Every common in-game goal seems common in real life: accumulating wealth, acquiring power, gaining new skills, controlling territory, being a valued member of a team, creating valuable goods from raw materials, etc. This one aspect doesn't seem to have a common parallel, unless the number of men with this fantasy is rather high...
If you don't want to wear women's underwear in real life, why do it here?

So this friend of yours does not want to play a game because some people have female characters while being male in real life? In my experience there are a few reasons most people that I have run into pick females:
Scam They like women Other
The Other category is the bunch of people I never cared to ask why they have a female character because I don't care. They go pop and drop loot just like everyone else =P ---
Lisento Slaven wants to be a Space Whaler in EVE.

Usually males prefer looking at females more than looking at males, and in MMO's where your view is third person all of the time I'd much rather look at a females behind than some male's behind.
It's just my preference.

She doesn't play EVE for other reasons entirely, but the fact that gals are frequently guys here just made the whole thing kind of a joke to her.

Edited by: Ares Lightfeather on 24/05/2007 15:07:05 For my part, if I play a female character, it's because I'd rather stare at a women than a men during all the time I play.
And for game relations, it's much easier to join guilds /corps / groups with a female avatar than a male one. People instinctively speak more to women that man, which helps a lot for meeting people.
You don't actually see the character in eve, so I chose a male character (first time in a MMORPG in ages).
And yeah, I'm a guy.
PS : and it's role playing. Playing a role means for me playing something you are not. If your friend doesn't get it, tell her it's like a movie (Ms Doubtfire ?), except that you make the story yourself instead of just passively watching.

There are three reasons.
The 'Abraham' reason - to get free stuff.
The 'Achura' reason - because the males are just plain fugly, whether you have to look at them lots or not.
The 'Fely' reason - because you feel like a women inside.

There was a hilarious bio regarding this subject, but I'm not ingame so I can't post it. It was a pretty good IC backstory regarding cross-gender roleplaying.
Chemukh was the name I think.

I got this name from a little blue gerbil my wife owned. I dunno where she got the name from.

It's kinda simple. I am not my character. In a non-roleplaying sense, it is just an avatar, a picture on the screen. How an avatar with a female likeness being controlled by a male player could cause discomfort and distress in anyone is quite frankly beyond me.

There are still some people out there who think you are supposed to play as yourself. Just with BIG guns / muscles / swords / spells.
Those same people usually treat MMORPGs as socialising tools and/or 3d dating and cyb0ring clients.
Those people take piracy, scams, etc ... personally and try to involve RL morals and / or laws.
I really dont care about those people, and neither should you ...

Its simple, you could class people in two categorys. The one category picks a character they would like to be, someone they adore or fantasize about to be. The other category picks a character they fantasize about to meet/share time with.
Or in other words, if you where a god, and had the power to create a single being to share your time with, clean your room and stuff, would it be a man or a woman?
People need to get over the idea that those squishy things they call brains in their head work the same for other people as they do for themselves. Just because you chose a character that represents you in the game doesnt mean that every character represents its creator. Some may be modelled after the lost first love, mother or a sister(with the other being female and playing the male version of his brother).
In other words there might be hundreds of reasons, and to be honest pretending that all the people creating their characters following the same reasoning is a insult to the whole human race, but its ok, your in good company.

Personally I think it's pretty damn tragic that some people seem to look for hidden meaning behind what choice a player has made for their avatar.

Haha, ugly ftw! I spent ages trying to do something with this face, but finally just gave up. Also, the dev responsible really messed up the hairdo choices. How can you have a monk without him being bald! Give me bald heads for monks, dammit! I demand a razor for me head!
What's this "fely"? I don't understand the reference.
A related question would be how much the player identifies with their character? Eve isn't the most immersive game around, from a roleplaying perspective. There is no body, no human, to look at, just ships and a portrait. I have a female alt, but I don't distinguish in any way which character is more "me", neither is. If someone does something to me, like blow up my ship, they do it to "me", the player behind the character, not to "me", Qui Shon or "me", Sandra Tyrell. (Some bastard already took the first name Rachel)
Other reasons I can think of: I'm sure it isn't so in many parts of the world, but around here gender equality has come a long way and gender based identities/roles don't overshadow your every choice in all things.
If you look at teens today, (I don't mean look literally, i.e. not appearances) a large portion of them have gotten very much closer to each other in behavior, and thus the stretch to roleplay a girl isn't so large anymore. For example, ask your cosmetologist friend how fast the male customers are increasing in their field. Or look at so called emo kids, often their gender is indistinguishable at a glance.

Theres a very good reason for females to play as male characters - the prejudice. As a friend once put it, it seems males online believe the chances of them scoring is huge if they dash over some great things and flex with their characters. And well, some of us are simply not interested in this. Some of us like to seperate the two.
Guess this however is a grand reasons for male players to play female characters. Heck, grab some daring snapshots of any female, put them in your bio and sell your GTC's and ships way way faster.
Further on, this is a roleplaying game, why on earth would people choose not to play as females? Most senior players field a number of characters, they can impossible make them all as similiar to themselves irl as possible, as they would end up indentical?

Edited by: Topaz Skydiver on 24/05/2007 15:30:50 Do I like girls ? Yes, cool girls, cute girls, sexy girls, power-girls that kick ass, mysterious girls ...
I don't play myself in MMORPGs. If I watch tombraider, I think Lara played by Angelina Jolie is hot, cool and a lot more at the same time. But watching a movie is a passive activity.
In a MMORPG I play such a character myself and give him some life and character and let him do things, that come into my imagination and it's fun to see how things evolve. Other players do the same, you get new ideas, interact with other players, so it's really fun.
I enjoy to do that and fantasize a bit from time to time. I enjoy to play my little female 'heros' or 'anti-heros' as much as my male ones. It's all about imagination. Has nothing to do with wanting to be a girl in RL.
Maybe you have to play MMORGs more often to leave the conservative thinking behind that a man needs to play a male character or something like this and that his char his himself.
You virtual heros can be anything you like him/her to be and the game allows. The char is there for you to play him/her the way you like and be entertained by what is happening. Nothing more. --------------------------------------------- *snip* |

After reading this post I analyzed for the first time why I picked a male over a female. The answer was simple really, I never thought to do otherwise. Now you have me wondering why so many people I know have female characters. I'll ask them and get back to you it, but I think some one hit the nail on the head; they're females trapped in male bodies.
BTW I only wear female underwear when I PvP. I fly naked when running missions and mining.
