Geez, I rarely know if the person I'm dealing with has a male or female avatar, and unless they start adding avatar icons to the overview, I imagine I'll continue to not know. The only thing that gives it away is the name to me, and of course the voice over TS if it comes to that.
No sexism here. Everyone looks the same with the blinking yellow brackets around their ships icon :P

fwiw back when i was playing UO a friend of mine and his lady friend argued about whether she got treated better for being a female char than he did as a male.
in the interests of resolving this they proceeded to make up a new pair of char with reversed sexes. they discovered that she had indeed been better treated than she was as a guy.

Does 'roleplay' ring anything at her?
Why do people play evil pirates here? Because they want to kill people in real life and can't do it there? I doubt that. Why are people destroying other peoples ships? Because they can't smash their neighbours car in real life and so compensate their feelings here? I doubt that. Why are males playing females? Because they can't be females in real life and want it to be, so they play females here? I doubt that also.
Maybe just most of the males just don't want to stare at an ugly male face everytime when they log in? I can easily believe that they instead would like to see a nice femals (face) greeting them and welcome them to Eve. Sounds at least reasonable to me.

I have a female avatar cause i like to cyber and post the logs after getting people to reveal embarassing personal information.
Not really.
When I thought of the name Mari Onette, I absolutely had to use it. You dont give a name like Mari to a male character.
The more interesting question in my opinion is why is your female friend is so hung up on the fact that some guys play girls? Why does it matter what picture i have? It's a game, it's not real, and it's not like I'm planning to seduce anyone (that may not be true for everyone I guess).
Theres a difference between having a female avatar, and representing yourself as a female. Most of the people I know with female avatars do not represent themselves as female, they usually use male or gender neutral pronouns (except for RP reasons.) Personally, I try to avoid any sort of gendered pronouns in my speech unless I'm talking about my characters in the third person "Mari has 2 days left before she gets astrometrics 5" "damnit Adam just lost his ship". If someone wants to know my gender, they can ask and I'll tell them, but I fail to see how its relivant to playing the game.
People who spend a lot of time in the real world tend to get hung up on things like gender because they closely associate gender with the substance of who a person is. . On the net, it's different. Who you are is not represented by gender, age, or race. You represent yourself with your words, and in english at least, words dont have genders. When you think of the substance of a person being their thoughts and acts, and not their avatar, things like the gender rapidly become unimportant, UNLESS you want to have sex with them.

Fundamentally, the genders are an illusion, having no lasting permanent reality. It will continue to be a topic of confusion and attachment to anyone who clings to their apparent reality. Play what you want, try not to become perplexed.

Haven't read the whole thread but a slightly off topic reply to the OP.
Some people aren't very good at dealing with people online...
For example: A few weeks ago both myself and my partner were logged, I was docked he was scanning for exploration sites. We were chatting to corp mates inbetween cooking dinner. Bit of a mishap with boiling water ends up with my partner burning his arm. So best way to deal with a burn anyone? Yup, keep it under running cold water for 10-15 mins. So I go to his account, tell his ship to dock for safety and type in "We'll be away a while guys, bit of an accident, ---- has burnt his arm, not too serious (btw its ----)"
When we come back we find one of our corp mates accusing us of mind games because I typed that message on my partners account....
Ok bit of a long story, but basically maybe it not so much the fact that guys play girl chars... but that she cant be sure people are what they say they are. Though that really does apply to anything online.
My first online game was diablo 2, I got so used to sorc = female, paladin = male etc I now barely register male or female when looking at chars, til I start talking to the player of course.
Maybe it's partly because I loved playing paladins and my partner loved playing amazons (yup I'm the girl in this pair).
Anyhows, final thought, in an online game where you're sometime in the future and are in a pod full of goo most of the time... why shouldnt anyone play any char? (Including girls wanting to play male chars if they so choose, not just guys wanting to play female chars).

An interesting thought:
If eve-voice is integrated into ambulation, it would smoke out all of the imposters, no? Wouldn't it be disturbing if you stepped onto an elevator, looked over at the Gallente tart beside you, said "Hi!" and a man answered back? Could be funny.
I sincerely hope they don't make communication the floating-text spam it is in other MMOs.

It's an immersion breaker of course. My chars aren't supposed to be me, so if the chars use my voice it's a bit anti-roleplay and with female chars, really an rp killer.
Although I am not really roleplaying hardcore like the so-called roleplayers, I understand games like this as roleplay games. That's why I start to play them in the first place. If I create a char and enter the gameworld, I create a virtual person that is going to discover that virtual world. I'm giving this character some life and sharing his experiences with him.
That's how I play my chars, especially if I like them. So if I create a female char, a girl, then I see her as a girl ! That isn't me, I only steer her to this world, give her a virtual life and share the experiences with her.
That's why I also consider the question of other players that ask me, if I am really a girl, as an immersion breaker. If I talk to random people in the gameworld, they are talking to my char, not to me, so asking my female char, if she is really a girl, is kind of an insult ! If a stranger asks this, I think he's a nub ! I never answer that clearly, except the one, who asks, is a friend.
Like I said my chars aren't me, I give them some virtual life, steer them through the world, share their experiences, which is quite interesting and if I steer my female char through the world, then she is a 'she' and I want her to be treated that way. I see and treat her myself as a 'she'. That's the whole reason why I made her female in the first place !
Ok, in daily pvp life with teamspeak and my 2 male pvp mains, I don't care that much. Then I'm usually only in I-want-to-kick-butts-mode. But in the more silent moments it's like I said before.
P.S.: I've played several games and I see/treat/play my female chars as if they are females, although I block, if someone tries to date me. Then I run away, because I have more important stuff to do or so. The idea that another male gets some feelings, because my little char looks hot and I play her too well, makes me a bit afraid.

A: Your friend is clearly a moron or she just does'nt wanna play with you.....lol
B: Saying "Every common in-game goal seems common in real life" & "This one aspect doesn't seem to have a common parallel, unless the number of men with this fantasy is rather high" is kinda dumb....if this was WoW (World Of Warcraft) would your friend complain about there not being enough pixies & Goblins in RL to?
C: Men have female chars BECAUSE THE BLOOMIN WELL CAN IF THEY SO CHOOSE TO ....im really sick of seeing these topics crop up over and over again....get over it ffs....move on......if your so curious then get yourself a female char and see what the appeal is for yourself.
P.s....i dont usualy get ratty over topics but ffs...lol
P.P.S To answer your question...yes i offten wear woman's underwear ......pink frilly knickers, while playing eve under my pink spacesuit and shiney pink helmit!....lol....you got a problem with that to?.....lol

Originally by: Lisento Slaven So this friend of yours does not want to play a game because some people have female characters while being male in real life? In my experience there are a few reasons most people that I have run into pick females:
Scam They like women Other
The Other category is the bunch of people I never cared to ask why they have a female character because I don't care. They go pop and drop loot just like everyone else =P
generally speaking, many males who play male characters will go easier on a female character, assuming they're being nice to a sweet girl... yeah, no. i play a female character, in most other games i have used it to blag free stuff - not scam, just befriend richer characters, and play on their... well hormones. let them believe you're a girl, and the will shower you with riches. then you tell them you're a bloke, and leg it. this used to be an ammusing passtime for a group of us in WoW, we made a guild full of characters for this expressed purpose, and laughed our way to the bank.
of course, i never did any of that in EVE, i took this game seriously, and my main reason for having a female avatar is thus:
of course, there is the thought that most female characters are more astheticly pleasing than male ones - especially given that most minmatar (which i am) male characters vaguely resemble Orcs. and frankly, i didn't want to look like an Orc, but i did want to play as minmatar. ========================================== Iy
please remember: I AM a sarcastic ******* and nothing i say has ever represented the thoughts or feelings of my corp, alliance, or anyone really. read |

I actually regret choosing a female character. When I started I just thought that female starship captain must be the coolest thing and I've always kinda wanted to have a daughter instead of son, so I decided to create a female character. Gender doesn't matter if you're playing solo, but when you join in a corp and people start to call you with your characters name, it really starts to bug me. But I guess I can live with it :)

It's a political game and being a chick improves your chances of success in a lot of cases where you want something.
That and some people are just f-ing weirdos who made a chick character for no good reason, other than yeah, they probably like silk panties.

Male Caldari - eh kinda rugged. Female Caldari - armor looks cooler, look like they mean way more business.
Male Gallante - Pretty swish hair. Female Gallante - They have way more decoration and flare, better looking really.
Male Minmatar - Ok these look pretty neat. Female Minmatar - Also look quite cool really.
Amarr Male - Old man or ugly pedofile... hrmm which one do i pick? Amarr Female - Look far better and have more decoration.
I got a little carried away but i just think the males always look old, weary and have little decoration. Females look far more exciting and such.
Edit : Female Intaki is the best looking avatar i think.
