CCP Eris Discordia

All the girls at CCP have had power meetings at the coffee machine and set up a plan of action to get some fun stuff to happen at Fanfest for the women attending. Some of you may think no women will be at a game meet up but we expect to see a lot more of us this year. For one, all the female devs are attending. With CCP recruiting massively, we gained a lot of female devs in the last year.
Plans are contingent upon how many women EVE players are attending, so be sure to indicate in your registration that youÆre female. The more the merrier and the more activities we can plan in advance. If you know a few girls who play EVE, let them know that there will be a lot of other women at Fanfest and they will be made welcome by everyone, especially by all the ladies of CCP.
IÆll keep this thread updated and answer any questions, but itÆs too early to spoil or hint at what we are planning, but take my word for it, itÆs going to be fun.

I am sure you'd get triple the forecasted attendance if you CCP girlies put together a special plan to entertain the men that are coming.

Also, make the EVE TV crew more representative of the community? Three chicks, who are probably communication / art majors in college somewhere right now, desperate for a job to get on their resume, doesn't exactly convince us.
REAL gamer chicks! Please!!!

As far as I know there are no plans to hire girls to say they play EVE, we just want to the girls that do play EVE to know that they are welcome by all of CCP, especially by all the girls working for CCP.
From the comments here it looks like some of you are volunteering to wrestle eachother in mud and bikini. You do realise its a bit cold in November he?

You have my sympathy Eris. I know what you are trying to accomplish and I wish you the best. It's going to be a real pain to pull off and win the trust of the women out there.
While I realize that most of the posters here are responding in a tongue-in-cheek manner. I see that things haven't changed since I started online gaming back in the Quake 2 days. Anytime anyone purported to be female, the unwashed minions would either hit on very blatantly and stupidly or make crude remarks about women in general or specifically at that woman. You'd think we'd be past that 12 years into the online world but I guess not. Instead the second player post is calling for a bikini contest. :(
My wife is a gamer, has been for as long as we've known each other which is about 15 years now, married 13. She plays COH and WoW. (She doesn't want to play Eve to complicated she says. Truth is she's a cuddly carebear. <3) She gets harrassed in games that are more friendly to women than anything out there. The level of misogny in those women friendly communities is bad but it's not nearly as bad as it is here. Then again the level of maturity shown on these forums by all parties, players and devs, at times reminds me of the stereotypical "Animal House" fraternity.
Anyhow, enough old man grumping from me. Here's to the hope that some more maturity shows up and that your event at the gathering for the women of Eve goes well.

Their tanking abilities are unparalleled in their ability to have reason and logic bombs simply glance off them without any dent in their Feminisim shields with the monthly PMS booster.
As for ISK.. definatly pirates.. they will take what they want and leave you crying like a lil baby looking at your wallet wondering WTF happend.
You forgot the most important part, the default +6 bonus to memory and the fact that killrights are extended indefinitely, to be cashed in on at a time and place most inconvenient to the victim...

It's kind of funny that *Ice*land is actually pretty green, while *Green*land is almost completely frozen over.
The vikings wanted people to come to greenland, whereas not so much for iceland.

Fanfest? I am avoiding huge accumulation of nerds like conventions, LAN-parties etc. for the following reason: I don't want to be treated like an alien creature or and the comments in this thread confirm my desicion. (LAN-Parties are even worse because men tend to forget washing themselves on theese events and the smell is disgusting)
However, Eris' idea is nice, and contacting the women gamers of eve - channel (wgoe) would be a good idea.

Part of the problem with some of these gamer events is just location or timing. Women do go to them where I live. So maybe also society of where it is held has something to do with it as well.
Quote: While I realize that most of the posters here are responding in a tongue-in-cheek manner.
Some might be an attempt at harmless humour. Others are reinforcing the *male gamer* stereotype of a hormone ridden, young man that doesn't get out much and can't get any. I'm sure most male gamers aren't like that but it's an image they are helping to project when they act that way. Either way if they want to attract women in the game at all they are doing the contrary. Not that they are probably thinking about that much. My son treats women with the same respect he'd treat the guys with gaming. If a girl crosses the line or a guy he puts them in their place as clan leader in the game. That includes women trying to use the guys for stuff and the men treating women like they are a piece of meat.
Quote: My wife is a gamer, has been for as long as we've known each other which is about 15 years now, married 13.
If she lj's at all and is in the man women WoW forum there(wont say it's name here) tell her I said Hi. Also wondering if she's a Tauren now. You know they are the teddy bears of that game. I was harassed once in WoW early in play. Left my first guild over it but the guild leader wasn't impressed at what happened either.(also a woman and the guy that bugged me had a female character and warned me in game to not say I was actually a woman playing) One consolation for some female players is we just wait til the annoying party has got out to x area(or is flagged) then we kill them for stress relief. j/k
Congrats on the 13 years! :-)
As for length of gaming stuff. I forget how old I was when pong, merlin, et al came out. I played cartridge games on my vic20, did programming and gaming on Apple 2e's, had the original nintendo when it first came out, etc. So I've been a gamer a pretty long time. My son even wants me to play the MMORPGs he does but we each have our own tastes and I like the ones I'm in and don't need more to play.
Quote: Anyhow, enough old man grumping from me. Here's to the hope that some more maturity shows up and that your event at the gathering for the women of Eve goes well.
Hard to say but I'd like to think people behave a little better in person. Some of it though is the anonymity of the net and they let the jerk out. Some of us though are same offline as they are on. *shrug* Btw your not the only old one but hey once our kids hit teens we are "old" and when they hit about 5 years ago we were all ancient.. :-D
Anyways to the person that originally started this thread best of luck to you.

After 4 years though of enduring unrelenting "tongue in cheek" or "locker room" speach (which is what it is usually called to defend it) I would hope that _some_ of the guys who play this game would understand that it is a MAJOR detractor to having a healthy female playerbase. Frankly I don't think this fact of EvE is ever going to change, but you have to understand that there are some female players who come here to just play the game, to enjoy it like everyone else.
It's not about the even words usually, it's about the mentality of many of the players ingame which is very unhealthy to having a co-ed universe. However, A good number of the comments I have endured over the years would have ended RL jobs because of sexual harassment and this kind of speach really shouldn't be given such a protected status in this game (by the players) as it often is.
I want to clarify before I post that while the words in the comments on this thread are not unthinkable, it does show the underlying mentality a lot of the people bring to the game when they play.
I think a lot of the problem speach could be cleaned up too if some of the worst offenders simply **********d before they logged in...seriously.

Exactly. Maybe it's where I live (British Columbia) that I just don't get it. What about the convention specifically makes it more male? Wouldn't events generally be neutral? While not a gaming convention specifically I knew people involved in Vcon(http://vcon.ca) in past that were both male and female. I never noticed any mention really of female or male specific activities.(that includes the gamer stuff)

Being a female gamer means that a certain amount of grief and harassment is inevitable. Logging onto a corp's teamspeak/vent server that you are interested in joining, finding a bunch of guys with varying levels of maturity and respect for women is a real eye opener. If every woman that played eve (or tried to and quit) had an ISK for every time she starts getting hit on after making her voice heard on a voice server...
Uncomfortable experiences that border on sexual harassment do make female players wary of attending a fanfest for *any* online game. That being said, not all men in this game deserve being jettisoned out of the nearest air lock
I'm going to venture a guess Eris is putting events together for the female eve players so we don't feel like we are being gate camped by a blob of hormone raging men at the fanfest Just have a code of conduct drafted for the fanfest that is understood by all the attendees so everyone feels safe and welcome. We just want to know that concord will be there help us pod any harassers
As for activities catered to women players of eve, I'd love to attend a discussion of what female devs+players think this game is missing (and no im not talking about coloring my Caracal pink). Any details on what you are thinking of planning would be great
Personally I don't know if I can make it to the fanfest, I work in the game industry myself and the fanfest falls around the time projects tend are close to finishing up right before christmas I still have hope I can attend though!

If anyone, female or male, feels uncomfortable with attention being paid to them by any of the Fanfest attendees, we will have (as we have at the past three events) security on-site. You can tell security, any of the Developers or ISD staff; the situation will be looked into and resolved.
Having said that, I have yet to hear of any instances where a player continued to be the subject of unwanted attention after having expressed feelings about the attention. That is one outstanding trait of the EVE community, there might be a lot of smack talk on the forums or in-game, but you are all a polite and well-mannered bunch when meeting in person.

I'm glad something is being done for the women that Attend. I attended last year and if it wasn't for a few guys that took me under their wing and spending a day traveling in the country, I would have been bored out of my mind. I purposely chose not to attend this year due to that. The whole place just reeked of "GUY THING"!. It didnt help that one of the Devs said in a speech with about 1000 people in the room that "Girls don't like to blow things up". Ooooookay buddy. What ever you say man. That was my first and probably last EVE Fanfest attendence. Its bad enough that you feel out of place in such an event as a woman, but for a dev to say that only added to the exclusion. I am glad to see CCP making some efforts to be more "sensitive" to ALL their players.
Have fun!

It does I guess, but Kieron do have a point. I where at the fanfest last year. I guess there where around 600 players there! And even if there where solid drinking and lots of laugher under the roof, I did not see anything that can come close to harassments! Well... the devs might have gotten a little tired though since I where running all around with my beer and poster nagging the devs to sign it
I guess the reason is most of the players who do play EVE have grown up, and left their teenage hormones somewhere in a locked drawer in their basement at home. Because what I saw where "good guys" having a cold beer with the "bad guys". The tone where easy and relaxed and everyone who was present had a good time! That is why I am going back this year!

Exactly. Maybe it's where I live (British Columbia) that I just don't get it. What about the convention specifically makes it more male? Wouldn't events generally be neutral? While not a gaming convention specifically I knew people involved in Vcon(http://vcon.ca) in past that were both male and female. I never noticed any mention really of female or male specific activities.(that includes the gamer stuff)
don¦t get it, neither nice idea eris for the wgoe club but please don¦t make a big deal out of it. i am not playing this game to get another treatment than male does, i like it the way it is. anyway, i am also not a friend of the wgoe thingie <g>
btw a lot of players do know that i am female due to ts sessions in d2 or g times with alot of players from our old neighbours and friends defending xzh against goons for example and i never had any real bad experiences ingame. action <-> reaction ;o)

Just hand out a tazer to everyone that indicated they were female in the registration docs. You can save money on the security and collect the tazers at the end of fanfest. Just replace the (completely) dead batteries and you can re-use them again next year.

there seems to be loads of women playing eve, I think it's to do with the intelligence factor
although men may disagree, women tend to have a high intelligence
behind every good man there is a woman with a giant stick
maybe half of them are men wanting to be a woman, maybe not, there seems to be loads of women, it's got to be the intelligence factor that draws them in to eve
W.o.W. hack and slash, that's kind of it
Eve so much to do and so little time, we need 48 hours a day, not 25 hours, they should change it just for Eve
power to the women I say

As a female who plays eve,I have giggled like a school girl at many of the comments made,my favorite being that hormones should be kept in there manpurse!! But would like to comment on the statement made by the dev at the last FF,Contrary to what men may think , alot of women enjoy the thought of orbiting, baiting, webbing and smack talking there prey before moving in for the kill wither that be a quick short sharp attack or a long drawn out slow death!! Do u agree with me ladies or not? Futher more on some of the ladies behalf I would like to suggest that events like MR EVE be considered with female judges , perhaps corp against corp etc for the most handsome corp on eve .I'm sure men parading on stage in several stages of dress and undress for instance , combat gear, evening attire and perhaps shower wear after a hard batle etc . or even a before or after kina thing!.Or perhaps male pvp in a pool of mud or jelly with skimpy gear. Now I am almost sure the ladies would turn out in bigger numbers just to view the eye candy and vote seriously on the skill levels etc .What do u think ladies .I'm sure if enough of us put in a petition stressing how theraputic that would be for us battle hardened females CCP just might consider it as an Event

the other side i can inform you : its to expensive to buy a beer n island. or if the police getcha ! thats illegal. so better lets follow eris-discoursia, you havent to listen to kieron and his marketing plan. there are better ways ... and we can ship over to northerland / cap <- back

Hello friends how are you all today? I am fine. My name is Donges and I think it is an excellent idea to bring females to the Fanfest because we all know that the majority of EVE players are males, and we wouldn't want this to be a sausage party, now would we!? I for one welcome the notion to get more females involved in the EVE universe because we could use more real female characters rather than droves of males playing female characters because that's just creepy, right? This is just my two cents I just wanted to let you guys know how I feel about this whole matter because my opinion on this is important and I know you all want to know how I feel about this, isn't that right friends.

A few years ago i attended a soe fanfaire and there were a large number of female gamers there. Not girlfriends that tagged along since you were either a guest or had a badge with your in game name. Of course thats not to say that they were all single.
We ended up hanging out with a few Brits and a Scot that were in the same guild, at a club while playing pool. the Brits were married and apparently met through the game.
I didnt read the thread but just tossing in what ive seen before at another fanfair. WHich may help some of them decide if they should attend. I think the way everyone saw the female gamers wasnt like "oh lets see if i can hook up with her" but just treating them like any other gamer/fan .

You have to use reverse-reverse-psychology on her. Take her out for a nice dinner and tell her, that you'd love to share more spare time with her. You finally came to the concluion, that girls lack the skills and the intelligence to understand complex games like Eve, and therefore you want to let her decide which game you want to play together :P

Step 1: Befriend them ( don't mention your EVE Addiction ) Step 2: Charm them ( as above ) Step 3: Marry them ( hint to your EVE Addiction ) Step 4: She has "Migrane" you have a "Fleet battle" ( that should raise some interest in her to play the game, if you prefer "Fleet battles" to the other thing ) Step 5: Distribute QT based on shipkills ( if she tends towards PvP ) or m¦ mined ( if she's a miner )

Personally, as a rl woman of eve (oh yes, boobs and everything) I dont see why you have to single us out.
We're just like the rest of you - only we dont have to beg for sex.
I get enough grief flying about when people find out I dont have a *****, and the idea of turning up for knitting circles and coffee mornings in aid of some underwhelmingly boring fluffy animal in need when I could be getting ****faced with my other half and corp mates puts me right off.
I want to know more about PVP not PMT ta all the same.
(Sorry to the girls that thought this was a good idea, but the women of Eve are already holding their own... and if i wanted something girly to play I'd download a virtual pony).

lol youch!
The boobs comment a sarcastic dig at the guys on here who cant seem to see past them, as well you know...
Secondly - Im not shouting about being a woman - this thread is directed at the WOE and its been hijacked by the rest of the universe saying how nice it'd be to have chicks fighting in jello so I highlighted that I was actually a woman and not a right on PC male.
I just dont see the difference between me and anyone else playing the game. CCP need to get the point = we already play eve. We like it because its the way it is, and we dont need to have anything special for us to keep liking it.
Besides which, Im sorry but it feels like more of a "come on guys lets all go to the fan fest - theres gonna be REAL women there".

The devs are pimping females out to try and get the male counterparts to come to the Fanfest? That's insane on so many different levels. Maybe your next step should be offering coupons for hookers and free ****.

It's more a thread intended for the women who want to go but are worried they might be the only girl there.
Ps I don't know since when being feminine is considered to be a bad thing or an indication of pvp skills though, but that is not what this thread is about so let's save that discussion for another time.

Fair enough... but I only heard about this thread by having a bunch of blokes telling me how nice it'll be to be able to have a pink room to go in.
My bad - I shouldve considered that the rest of the ladies playing eve would be in the same boat.
:( Sad really that we have to contend with being hit on when we join new corps, and have to even consider that we might be the only one at the fan fest.
I hope you get a good turn out - I wont be able to come this year, but would love to go to a UK fan meet if the chance arises.

It does not matter if you are a man or a woman. The sight of the average 20 stone eve male pvping in the mud with "skimpy gear" is enough to cause blindness regardless of gender.

I'm a woman, I play EvE, I have no interest in going to the fanfest, because I don't like large scale events. About some stuff I have been reading here: I started playing EvE with my bf ( we also play other MMO's together), but since he got podkilled, it's mainly me who still enjoys EvE. Yes, I'm a carebear, I like mainly missions in EvE. I stay away from low security zones.I've met some great people on the internet and also a lot of weirdo's (mainly men who think they can instantly marry you when they find out that you are a real woman on the internet).
