Edited by: Blue Wraith on 06/11/2007 15:33:23 I'm not sure why Dashboard widgets would suddenly be causing a Dock file synchronizer to crash and burn. The two are not even related. This has to be an Apple bug. However, the Harmonic guy seems to have worked around this in his widget, so I'll see if I can find out what he did and do the same.
I'm certain that Apple will release a fix for this, because it is obviously their error. But, so will I if it's causing my people problems.

Also, it would be helpful if those having the DockSync issue and AppleCare would open a case with AppleCare so they can see this happening. As I said, there's no reason why a web page should be able to crash file synchronization software. They screwed up somewhere.

Thanks for staying on top of it. I also figured Apple would fix it with an update, especially if so many separate users are experiencing the problem, but I thought I'd mention it anyways.

I don't have AppleCare, but I've been sending each and every crash report to Apple. Given this didn't happen under Tiger and it does in Leopard, I hope they'll fix this problem. |

For some reason, every time I reboot, or shutdown/start up, ESM either doesn't save the api information, or it'll switch the api information to another window, so I'll be tracking two of the same toons.

Regarding the crash issue, I believe I have narrowed it down with the help of a fellow player and the dashboard dev list.
A non-obvious things that I was told DockSync does is that it also syncs preferences for widgets (not sure why). When ESM starts for the first time (and probably once a month), it saves about 300 skill ids and names to preferences. The reason I do this is two-fold. The skill data is massive (would be like 100 pages typed), so I don't want to fetch it each time you change a skill (or you probably don't want me to). Plus, I can download it once, save only the skill id and name that I need from it, and all widget instances can see and use it.
Since the preferences change so fast when ESM first starts, DockSync gets overloaded trying to keep up, and it's head a splode.
I've got ESM v2 coded, and it's being debugged. I believe I have worked around this issue, but don't yet have Leopard to test (crossing my fingers for tomorrow).

I have to admit the preference loading code is an utter kludge. It really needs refactoring.
That being said, I haven't experienced what you're describing since I started using 1.2.4. Usually when you have the greatest chance of getting characters reshuffled is when you upgrade. When I actually look at my preference file, I have both my accounts in there twice, but when I reboot it always seems to pull them up the way they were
<excusesExcuses> I'll take a look after I get 2.0 out and see if I can make a better design for the preference handling. Making a widget aware of other instances is essentially an exercise in parallel programming, but I don't have the luxury of sharing memory between them, only a slow preference file. So, it's not easy. </excusesExcuses>

No excuses need sirrah. I love the widget, just wish I didn't have to keep inputing the api information. I'm running three of them at the moment. When it's up and running, it works wonderfully, keep up the good work.

One of my chars has a 7 char User ID, had to mod the .html to bump the limits by 1.
Works great otherwise.
Nice work, much appreciated!

Not sure why but since I moved to the new version of EVE Skill Monitor I'm getting the message: Authentication Failure I re-entered my API info but the error message persists.
Is anyone else affected by this?
I love this widget, really want to have it back in use again soon, especially with the new dropdown panel. Very nice touch, btw, Blue Wraith.

The HTML scheme for it is limiting the User ID to 6 spaces.
Go to User->Library->Widgets->ESM
Right Click on the widget and pick show package contents.
Edit the Eve Skill Monitor.html file
At line 152:
Replace <input id='userId' class='userId' type='text' maxlength='6' size='6' /> With <input id='userId' class='userId' type='text' maxlength='7' size='7' />
And it'll let you put in your full User ID.

If i try to do this by editing with textedit. it wont let me see the code. When i open the html in a browser i can copy the source and change whats needed and resave but it does something to screw up the widget. All i get is code and no gui on the widget. What exactly needs to be done to fix this? I like this widget and would like it working but as much as i look over the code that might of changed but i cant find anything.

Oops! I didn't know it was possible to have a 7 char User Id. (Both of mine are 6 characters).
I'll get a fix out right away.

Oh yeah, I also fixed the preferences where you shouldn't have any trouble with it rearranging the widgets or not showing training for one of them. Unfortunately, now it won't keep your information between upgrades like it (sorta) used to. I'll shoot for that in the next release.

I have received a couple of reports of Undefined skill names in Leopard. I just bought Leopard, so I'll install it and try to get that ironed out.

Just want to say thanks to Blue Wraith. You've done a great job with this widget-- got the update and it's working perfectly now. Love that additional info is now available through the drop down panel.
Again, great work.

Well, I have having trouble reproducing the Leopard Undefined skill error. Although the glass buttons are messed up for me in Leopard.
Anyway, I even tried removing my widgets, deleting preferences, and adding it back to the Dashboard, but it came up just fine. Can anyone with Leopard email me some steps to reproduce the error?
Also, is anyone else with Leopard seeing the broken-looking glass buttons?

The character portrait being an "!" on a black background sounds like an Eve image server problem. They put up the "!" when they don't have your pic ready.

The Done button on the info pane is definitely broken for me on Leopard. The Done portion of the button sits 10 or so pixels below the left and right rounded edges.
As for the Undefined error, I was having this after having upgrade-installed Leopard, and having used ESM prior to upgrading. I went into the com.apple.dashboard.plist and manually nuked the ESM entries from the Root/layer-gadgets subtree, as well as the widget preferences, and the widget began behaving. I'm not sure which of these did the trick, although I imagine it was killing the widget preferences. The old preference file was named completely different from the new one. If it's possible that the widget was still reading from the old prefs file, sounds feasible.
Hope this helps at all.

I just released a fix to address the Glass buttons in Leopard.
That is helpful info on the undefined skill. I'll have to check into the instance properties and see if that holds the key to the problem. I deleted the ESM preference files, but didn't know about the other.
I made the new preference file different on purpose so that the old preference file wouldn't give the new version any trouble. The different versions store the information differently (to avoid the Dock Sync crash). v2 doesn't use the old preference file at all.

I'm getting an Authentication Error. Didn't happen like this till I added another character to my account to actually test a program I myself am creating for the EVE API.

You get the "Could not connect..." message when ESM makes a request, but receives no confirmation that the request was received. This is so that you know when it couldn't connect. This can happen when:
1) You are not connected to a network. 2) The Eve server is down for some reason 3) My server is down when it tries to run an update check (once a day).
If it cannot contact the Eve server, it will continue to display the last skill that was training and count down for it. This is so that you can still check the progress of the last skill you were training even if you are offline. You can tell that it is cached information because the loading indicator will still be spinning and the character picture will not download.
When it fails to connect, ESM will keep trying to connect to the Eve server so you don't have to do anything manually to make it update when the server comes back up or when you reconnect to the network.
In other words, this message is normal. But let me know if it happens when you're connected to the Internet and the Eve API server is actually up.
I should note that this can also happen if you connect and open Dashboard before the computer gets all the network info.

Hey Blue Wraith,

Sweet. ESM 2.0 should have worked around it also, but good to know.
