I just thought I'd let the interested Mac users know that I'm currently updating ESM to use the new API keys. I'm also going to have it automatically recheck the skills, since password storage is no longer an obstacle.
I'll update this thread as more info and updates become available.

I don't have access to Vista at the moment. I haven't heard of one myself, but it could be out there.
If someone were to donate a (legitimate) copy of Vista, I would be more than happy to create a gadget for it. However, I have absolutely no plans to ever purchase Vista myself.
It should also be noted that it is now also possible to make a Google gadget to monitor skill training. It was not possible before the new API, because Google does not allow AJAX connections over HTTPS. The new API does not even use HTTPS, so it's doable now. I probably won't embark on that anytime soon without some prodding.

Edited by: Blue Wraith on 06/07/2007 00:02:28 Version 1.2.2 is now up.
New things:
ESM now uses the Eve API interface. Use the limited API Key for ESM, as that's all it needs.
ESM now rechecks skills automatically. It honors the cache timeout value that the API provides.
For future updates of ESM, I finally fixed the update process so that you will not have to re-enter the User ID and API Key each time.
I completely rewrote the update process. All the code monkeys out there will appreciate this, as the code is much easier to follow.
And there was much rejoicing.

The latest uses the Eve API (use a limited API key), and automatically rechecks skills.

Sorry about that! I fixed the link. Also, you can click on my sig, and it will take you to the ESM website.
Thanks for pointing that out!

Great job on this, it's going right next to my Simpsons Movie countdown.

Here's my priority list for new features:
- Add a place to show the completion date and time of the current skill. This has been missing for far too long already.
- Give an auditory and visual alert when the skill has finished.
- When multiple widgets are used, add an indicator for whichever character will finish training first.
Let me know if there's anything else you guys and gals would like to see.

Great Widget! Is there a way to resize it, coz long skill names do not fit in propperly.

I have two accounts, and I'm thinking that running two instances of this monitor would work. However, simply renaming it doesn't let me run two instances. Is it possible to run two instances?

this is a fantastic little widget. however the interface _really_ needs some work. if you'd like, i can do some mockups for you.

I like the way it looks just fine and I run two copies with no problems.
I would like to see the following (in order of importance):
1. SP/hour (this is tough because implants aren't included from the server I don't think, and its useless without them factored in)
2. Total SP (if not a counter, than the total last time the widget synced)
3. Skill completion time in local time zone and format instead of EVE time.

There's currently not a way to resize it. I am very much interested in being able to do this on the fly. The UI is getting a bit crammed right now. The next iteration will allow for this. I'm expecting to start work on it as soon as Leopard comes out, as my DashCode beta has expired, and I can no longer use it to modify the widget. Changes that I have made since July have been the old fashioned way (editing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript).

It was designed to run multiple instances for multiple accounts. You can change the color for each ESM widget so you can tell them apart at a glance.

EDIT: i knocked one up real quick as an example (the diagonal lines are to make the transparent bits more visible) :
(EDIT2: oh i forgot, if you wanted to change the colour to distinguish characters aside from the portraits, just change the semi transparent border colour.)
I agree that the interface is now too crammed with stuff (originally, there was no wallet balance or Skill completion time). The main problem is that the countdown timer is so huge. This is not going to be easy to resize until I am able to use DashCode again. However, at that point, I am going to redesign the widget to handle multiple accounts and the look will be a bit different and more streamlined. I appreciate your mock-up. That does look a bit clearer, and I'll take that into consideration for the redesign.

As far as #3, the widget already does this. If you notice my sig, it says GMT -5 on the end, which is my time zone (CDT). The finish time that it displays is your local time, based on the time zone your computer thinks it's in.
As far as your other two requests, #2 is pretty easy to do. I can include that in the next major update. #1 will require me to add more controls to the back of the widget or new windows to allow you to put in the implants. Honestly, that will probably never make it into the widget due to space constraints. BUT, when I decide to do a full-fledged skill management app (a la EveMon), I can certainly include it there.

Thanks for putting the widget together, it is handy to have. I haven't figured out how to install two instances of it, though. Would someone please explain how to do so?

Open the widget bar at the bottom of the screen and drag&drop the widget two times to your screen. Voila, two instances both with their own preferences.

I have to say i actually quite like the design as it is now. The important thing i want to know is the time left, and it's easy to see at a glance.
Leave the other stuff for MacMon. I certainly look forward to that :) |

Edited by: Blue Wraith on 04/09/2007 22:16:03 Here's the general layout that I was looking to use for the next version of ESM. It's still on the drawing board right now, so let me know what you think.
Advantages Single widget handles multiple accounts Orders characters by which is finishing a skill first Grows/Shrinks in size as you add/remove accounts Much easier for me to keep track of preferences
Other Changes More Object-Oriented Goodness. Convert and streamline more of the code to OO code, to make it easier to expand on and reuse. Show "Tomorrow, 12:34pm" or "Today, 12:34pm" if your skill is finishing tomorrow or today. Widget colors other than grey will probably have to wait until v2.1. They will be difficult to make look good without other, more involved adjustments
Future Audible Alert when skill finishes. This will require me to keep the timers going (and consume system resources) even when the Dashboard is not open. Perhaps this can be a check-box option.
Let me know what you think.
P.S. It turns out SP / hr is not as involved to calculate as I originally thought. Since I am given a start time, end time, start SP, and end SP, I can figure it out in reverse, using some subtraction and division.
