I just thought I'd let the interested Mac users know that I'm currently updating ESM to use the new API keys. I'm also going to have it automatically recheck the skills, since password storage is no longer an obstacle.
I'll update this thread as more info and updates become available.

I don't have access to Vista at the moment. I haven't heard of one myself, but it could be out there.
If someone were to donate a (legitimate) copy of Vista, I would be more than happy to create a gadget for it. However, I have absolutely no plans to ever purchase Vista myself.
It should also be noted that it is now also possible to make a Google gadget to monitor skill training. It was not possible before the new API, because Google does not allow AJAX connections over HTTPS. The new API does not even use HTTPS, so it's doable now. I probably won't embark on that anytime soon without some prodding.

Edited by: Blue Wraith on 06/07/2007 00:02:28 Version 1.2.2 is now up.
New things:
ESM now uses the Eve API interface. Use the limited API Key for ESM, as that's all it needs.
ESM now rechecks skills automatically. It honors the cache timeout value that the API provides.
For future updates of ESM, I finally fixed the update process so that you will not have to re-enter the User ID and API Key each time.
I completely rewrote the update process. All the code monkeys out there will appreciate this, as the code is much easier to follow.
And there was much rejoicing.

Here's my priority list for new features:
- Add a place to show the completion date and time of the current skill. This has been missing for far too long already.
- Give an auditory and visual alert when the skill has finished.
- When multiple widgets are used, add an indicator for whichever character will finish training first.
Let me know if there's anything else you guys and gals would like to see.

I like the way it looks just fine and I run two copies with no problems.
I would like to see the following (in order of importance):
1. SP/hour (this is tough because implants aren't included from the server I don't think, and its useless without them factored in)
2. Total SP (if not a counter, than the total last time the widget synced)
3. Skill completion time in local time zone and format instead of EVE time.

There's currently not a way to resize it. I am very much interested in being able to do this on the fly. The UI is getting a bit crammed right now. The next iteration will allow for this. I'm expecting to start work on it as soon as Leopard comes out, as my DashCode beta has expired, and I can no longer use it to modify the widget. Changes that I have made since July have been the old fashioned way (editing HTML, CSS, and JavaScript).

It was designed to run multiple instances for multiple accounts. You can change the color for each ESM widget so you can tell them apart at a glance.

EDIT: i knocked one up real quick as an example (the diagonal lines are to make the transparent bits more visible) :
(EDIT2: oh i forgot, if you wanted to change the colour to distinguish characters aside from the portraits, just change the semi transparent border colour.)
I agree that the interface is now too crammed with stuff (originally, there was no wallet balance or Skill completion time). The main problem is that the countdown timer is so huge. This is not going to be easy to resize until I am able to use DashCode again. However, at that point, I am going to redesign the widget to handle multiple accounts and the look will be a bit different and more streamlined. I appreciate your mock-up. That does look a bit clearer, and I'll take that into consideration for the redesign.

As far as #3, the widget already does this. If you notice my sig, it says GMT -5 on the end, which is my time zone (CDT). The finish time that it displays is your local time, based on the time zone your computer thinks it's in.
As far as your other two requests, #2 is pretty easy to do. I can include that in the next major update. #1 will require me to add more controls to the back of the widget or new windows to allow you to put in the implants. Honestly, that will probably never make it into the widget due to space constraints. BUT, when I decide to do a full-fledged skill management app (a la EveMon), I can certainly include it there.

Open the widget bar at the bottom of the screen and drag&drop the widget two times to your screen. Voila, two instances both with their own preferences.

Edited by: Blue Wraith on 04/09/2007 22:16:03 Here's the general layout that I was looking to use for the next version of ESM. It's still on the drawing board right now, so let me know what you think.
Advantages Single widget handles multiple accounts Orders characters by which is finishing a skill first Grows/Shrinks in size as you add/remove accounts Much easier for me to keep track of preferences
Other Changes More Object-Oriented Goodness. Convert and streamline more of the code to OO code, to make it easier to expand on and reuse. Show "Tomorrow, 12:34pm" or "Today, 12:34pm" if your skill is finishing tomorrow or today. Widget colors other than grey will probably have to wait until v2.1. They will be difficult to make look good without other, more involved adjustments
Future Audible Alert when skill finishes. This will require me to keep the timers going (and consume system resources) even when the Dashboard is not open. Perhaps this can be a check-box option.
Let me know what you think.
P.S. It turns out SP / hr is not as involved to calculate as I originally thought. Since I am given a start time, end time, start SP, and end SP, I can figure it out in reverse, using some subtraction and division.

If you want to go with the bigger version, please please please leave the old, small version up as a seperate program. Or put in options to turn it down. That new thing doesn't give any at a glance information, just a block. All i want to know from the widget is when my skill finishes. Right now i can see that at a glance. That new design would be as good as useless to me :( |

Actually, I was going to keep v1.2 available as a separate download. I can keep it updated separately if the need arises too.
However, you have a point about the "at-a-glance" factor. I can make the timer stand out a little more.
I don't know about you, but here's how I use it:
1. I check the finish date and time. I do this to make sure I can change a skill right after it finishes (i.e. I make sure it's not going to finish at 4 am). I recheck it when it's getting close to time for the skill to finish so I know exactly what time it will finish that day. Then I periodically check the system clock to see if it is time to change it.
2. I glance at the countdown timer if I'm in a hurry and can't take time to make plans about changing the skill, or if I haven't been playing for a few days and forget what (and if) I was training.
3. I check the wallet balance several times per day when I have a lot of sell orders or item exchange contracts up.
One of the main reasons for going with a unified widget is that preference handling is a nightmare across multiple widget instances. I can also do some things like reorder the characters shown in the widget so that you can see at a glance which of your characters is finishing a skill first. That is a lot of aggravation to do across multiple widget instances.
I could make SP / hr or total SP optional (with check boxes) if I was really having trouble fitting it in.
Also, the picture attached is just a mockup that I did in Pages. There's not an actual widget designed yet.

Phew, thank you :)
The way i use it: I have a mac laptop and a windows desktop. I am usually at home, but not nessecarily at my desk. I carry the laptop around with me though. I pop up dashboard to check how long(ish) is left on a skill. Just a quick pop, hit key, wait for it to load web stuff, hit key again, do whatever i was doing. I don't use the end time, and very rarely the wallet balance.
Several characters in one widget is a good idea. The rest, to me, is jsut...well..clutter. Sorry :)

Edited by: Blue Wraith on 10/09/2007 18:16:45 Ok, in thinking more about the design of the new widget, I've decided to go a different direction. Tell me what you think.
The widget will default to displaying a minimum amount of information:
Picture Character Name Skill Training Countdown Timer
As a consequence, the widget should be slightly smaller than it currently is, by default.
There will also be a slide-out that you can extend to show extra information:
Skill Completion Date Rate of Training (SP / hr) Total SP Wallet Balance
If you want to see the extra information, extend the slide-out. The widget will remember your slide-out preference.
I don't currently have a mock-up, but I will work on one.

Edited by: Blue Wraith on 14/09/2007 18:21:10 Eve Skill Monitor now works on the iPhone.
You can use this widget through Widgetop. It is under the Fun and Games category.
You have to setup an account, and it views the widget through Safari, not a separate widget application.
After you setup your account, simply point your iPhone's Safari to m.widgetop.com.
I would suggest setting up the widget on a computer first, to avoid having to mess with the API Key on the iPhone. You can do that on the Widgetop site, using the Mobile link at the top.
It also may need to be resized a bit to fit on the screen. I'll try to fix this in future versions of the widget. Or perhaps just program a native iPhone app.

I decided against an overall container, and instead went with a loose coupling of the widgets together using a glass "connector". An overall container was going to add a lot of extra space, which wasn't desired.
The back of the widget will probably be a fixed size, regardless of how many accounts you have in it.
Here are the screenshots from the working HTML and CSS model of the ESM v2. I don't have any code yet, but that's the next step.
No Tray
Tray Extended
The tray is actually slightly translucent, and the divider between widgets is very translucent. You should be able to very vaguely see your desktop through them. It's going to be a nice effect. I may tweak on them a little bit before release, though.

I just made a little modification on your mockup. (on the black version only)
I was not a big fan of the typeface, I just replaced the one for the name with a copperplate (i think it's a mac osx system font, but I'm not sure), and replace the skill name with a futura medium, all caps.
It's just a suggestion, not saying it's better

Hi! I downloaded ESM about a week ago I think, I have two accounts so I had two instances of it running. At one point things started to get really sluggish, so I checked the activity monitor and one instance of ESM was taking up (apparently) about 800mb of RAM, the other about 600mb of RAM. I closed the widgets and everything was fine again.
I'm going to use them again as I quite like them, if it happens again I'll let you know.

hear hear, if anything that out of place scripty font was what annoyed me most. probably the most irrelevant font face to use for such a project. if i may be so bold as to suggest, the tray doesnt need the extra shine layer, a subtle gradient would look much nicer. and the portrait should be on top so it doesnt get the line through it. otherwise, everything else i love about the new design :)

There seems to be a common thread of disdain for the Chancery font of the character name, so I'll change it to something more Eve-like. Soong Hay's font looked pretty good for that. However, I wasn't really trying to be Eve-like with the widget, per se. But I aim to please.
Originally by: devians theoria if i may be so bold as to suggest, the tray doesnt need the extra shine layer, a subtle gradient would look much nicer.
Well, we may not agree on what looks nice, but I will definitely be scrutinizing it when it gets into the testing phase. It might be that the glass effect distracts too much from the text, in which case, I will reduce or eliminate it.
Originally by: devians theoria and the portrait should be on top so it doesnt get the line through it.
I actually had to make a special effort to figure out how to accomplish this, lol. This makes it seem like the portrait is underneath a layer of glass. I prefer this for visual effect, but if other folks also don't like it, I will change it.

I changed the Character Name type to Copperplate. I tried using all caps Futura for the skill name, but by the time I got the font small enough to fit, it rendered broken strokes in the font because of the anti-alias Safari applies. I ended up using Futura with word capitalization only and was able to use an even larger font size than with the old font because Futura is such a narrow font.
I've been using Proj ECM skill as a test, because it's the longest skill name I can find. If it fits, then everything else will as well.
Anyway, I've posted the web page I'm using to test the UI. It looks fine in Safari and Firefox, although Firefox doesn't render the text shadows. It even looks ok in IE, except for gaps around the divider, and everything being in Times New Roman.
As a test, the blue one also has the picture above the glass rather than below it. You guys can decide which you like.
The web page with the HTML mock-up is here.

I'm actively developing on it, so the UI might be screwed up for brief periods of time. For instance, I am defaulting to show the back of the widget first for now, since that's what I'm working on.

More information on ESM 2.0.
Highlights for the flighty: Unified widget put off due to ADD Next planned update is layout change Davan Sarn of Eve Smugglers, professional graphic designer, now working on themes
After giving a good go at programming and designing a class structure for all the things I wanted to do in 2.0, I realized it would take me a couple of months of my free time to accomplish, and I get bored easily (you can only imagine how much cross-training my character has). So, I'm changing directions a bit. I'm going to go for more incremental updates rather than the ginormous complete overhaul.
First on the list is getting the look and layout changed to the new design. However, it will not be a unified widget just yet. (You'd be surprised how much extra programming you have to do for this!)
Also along the lines of the look, a professional designer, Davan Sarn of Eve Smugglers, has joined up with me and is designing themes for ESM. As a consequence, I will be adding theme support to make it easier on him, and easier on you if you want to add your own.
Anyway, expect the layout change over the course of the next week or so. I'll just put it up as the next version of ESM 1.x.

Belmarduk, send me a screenshot of what it looks like, and I'll try to figure it out. I can't imagine what would be causing that, so I'll just have to see what it's doing.

Edited by: William Darkk on 06/11/2007 05:15:31 I just installed this under leopard. I saw some sort of error message about DockSyncClient. I really should have gotten it down ><.
Anyway, I've been noticing lines of the following in the console log: 11/6/07 12:07:57 AM [0x0-0x7007].com.apple.dock[173] 2007-11-06 00:07:57.500 DashboardClient[627:3d07] ERROR: __CFURLCache::StepSQLStatement - step failed (exceed retry) - ErrCode: 5
EDIT: Found the crash reports in my log folder if you'd like to see them.

I have confirmed that the widget does not work properly under Leopard. There are several third party widgets that cause DockSyncClient errors, the complete error being "The application DockSyncClient quit unexpectedly." The widget functions, but this error will come up several times whenever dashboard is activated. Other people have been having problems with various widgets, but through process of elimination I verified that ESM is one of the guilty ones.

Edited by: Blue Wraith on 06/11/2007 15:33:23 I'm not sure why Dashboard widgets would suddenly be causing a Dock file synchronizer to crash and burn. The two are not even related. This has to be an Apple bug. However, the Harmonic guy seems to have worked around this in his widget, so I'll see if I can find out what he did and do the same.
I'm certain that Apple will release a fix for this, because it is obviously their error. But, so will I if it's causing my people problems.

Also, it would be helpful if those having the DockSync issue and AppleCare would open a case with AppleCare so they can see this happening. As I said, there's no reason why a web page should be able to crash file synchronization software. They screwed up somewhere.

For some reason, every time I reboot, or shutdown/start up, ESM either doesn't save the api information, or it'll switch the api information to another window, so I'll be tracking two of the same toons.

Regarding the crash issue, I believe I have narrowed it down with the help of a fellow player and the dashboard dev list.
A non-obvious things that I was told DockSync does is that it also syncs preferences for widgets (not sure why). When ESM starts for the first time (and probably once a month), it saves about 300 skill ids and names to preferences. The reason I do this is two-fold. The skill data is massive (would be like 100 pages typed), so I don't want to fetch it each time you change a skill (or you probably don't want me to). Plus, I can download it once, save only the skill id and name that I need from it, and all widget instances can see and use it.
Since the preferences change so fast when ESM first starts, DockSync gets overloaded trying to keep up, and it's head a splode.
I've got ESM v2 coded, and it's being debugged. I believe I have worked around this issue, but don't yet have Leopard to test (crossing my fingers for tomorrow).

I have to admit the preference loading code is an utter kludge. It really needs refactoring.
That being said, I haven't experienced what you're describing since I started using 1.2.4. Usually when you have the greatest chance of getting characters reshuffled is when you upgrade. When I actually look at my preference file, I have both my accounts in there twice, but when I reboot it always seems to pull them up the way they were
<excusesExcuses> I'll take a look after I get 2.0 out and see if I can make a better design for the preference handling. Making a widget aware of other instances is essentially an exercise in parallel programming, but I don't have the luxury of sharing memory between them, only a slow preference file. So, it's not easy. </excusesExcuses>

The HTML scheme for it is limiting the User ID to 6 spaces.
Go to User->Library->Widgets->ESM
Right Click on the widget and pick show package contents.
Edit the Eve Skill Monitor.html file
At line 152:
Replace <input id='userId' class='userId' type='text' maxlength='6' size='6' /> With <input id='userId' class='userId' type='text' maxlength='7' size='7' />
And it'll let you put in your full User ID.

If i try to do this by editing with textedit. it wont let me see the code. When i open the html in a browser i can copy the source and change whats needed and resave but it does something to screw up the widget. All i get is code and no gui on the widget. What exactly needs to be done to fix this? I like this widget and would like it working but as much as i look over the code that might of changed but i cant find anything.

Anyway, I even tried removing my widgets, deleting preferences, and adding it back to the Dashboard, but it came up just fine. Can anyone with Leopard email me some steps to reproduce the error?
Also, is anyone else with Leopard seeing the broken-looking glass buttons?

The character portrait being an "!" on a black background sounds like an Eve image server problem. They put up the "!" when they don't have your pic ready.

The Done button on the info pane is definitely broken for me on Leopard. The Done portion of the button sits 10 or so pixels below the left and right rounded edges.
As for the Undefined error, I was having this after having upgrade-installed Leopard, and having used ESM prior to upgrading. I went into the com.apple.dashboard.plist and manually nuked the ESM entries from the Root/layer-gadgets subtree, as well as the widget preferences, and the widget began behaving. I'm not sure which of these did the trick, although I imagine it was killing the widget preferences. The old preference file was named completely different from the new one. If it's possible that the widget was still reading from the old prefs file, sounds feasible.
Hope this helps at all.

I just released a fix to address the Glass buttons in Leopard.
That is helpful info on the undefined skill. I'll have to check into the instance properties and see if that holds the key to the problem. I deleted the ESM preference files, but didn't know about the other.
I made the new preference file different on purpose so that the old preference file wouldn't give the new version any trouble. The different versions store the information differently (to avoid the Dock Sync crash). v2 doesn't use the old preference file at all.

You get the "Could not connect..." message when ESM makes a request, but receives no confirmation that the request was received. This is so that you know when it couldn't connect. This can happen when:
1) You are not connected to a network. 2) The Eve server is down for some reason 3) My server is down when it tries to run an update check (once a day).
If it cannot contact the Eve server, it will continue to display the last skill that was training and count down for it. This is so that you can still check the progress of the last skill you were training even if you are offline. You can tell that it is cached information because the loading indicator will still be spinning and the character picture will not download.
When it fails to connect, ESM will keep trying to connect to the Eve server so you don't have to do anything manually to make it update when the server comes back up or when you reconnect to the network.
In other words, this message is normal. But let me know if it happens when you're connected to the Internet and the Eve API server is actually up.
I should note that this can also happen if you connect and open Dashboard before the computer gets all the network info.

v2.0.3 released.
This minor release fixes/updates a few display issues that annoyed me.
Most importantly, after this release your account information will be saved between upgrades. This release actually implements the system to do that, but the old one will not save your information correctly, so you will have to enter it hopefully only one more time, and after that it will be saved.

I've seen that error before also and haven't been able to figure out exactly why it happens. This error message is an Eve API error message that ESM receives after it makes a request, not my program's message. I haven't been able to reproduce the error to test it conclusively... it just seems to happen once in a blue moon. In fact, I haven't had it happen in a while now.
So far, I'm chalking it up to an infrequent communication or server issue. As heavily as the API server is probably getting hit, that seems plausible. However, I'll keep an eye out when I'm updating the code and see if I see any potential causes.

Next thing on the roster for ESM 2.1 is theme support. Davan Sarn has been busy building a "stack" of delicious themes, just waiting for the theme system to be in place. The main one I've seen is an Eve theme, and it looks just like the Eve UI. So be on the lookout for that update in the near future. Now if I can just pull myself away from Guitar Hero II long enough...

Feel free to new make designs. I'm going to work on a theme system for the next major release so that it will be easier to add and change themes.
It would make it easier to integrate into the widget if you used the existing HTML and just changed the images and CSS. Of course, changing those two things, you could change the widget in pretty much any way you wish, including sizes. I plan on making a themes configuration file where you can specify all the images and css names. Use layered CSS, and start the CSS tags with your theme name. That way, I can change the style name on the "front" div, and swap out the images for yours, and voila!

It's now constant. The widget is non-functional for me :-(
Re-installing the widget after Trinity seemed to help temporarily, but now it's a lot more stubborn. The display is stuck on the skill/wallet balance, etc. from the last time it was working properly. I've trained a few skills since then. I hope this info is helpful....

Ok, 2.0.4 is out. You should all get upgrade messages by tomorrow (sooner if you happen to log out or reboot). Let me know if it resolves things for you.

Any idea whats up?
I thought more about this issue, as I have seen intermittent messages like this before. I was thinking it could be a timing issue with fetching training data versus character data. I fetch them separately. So, I made a minor change with the 2.0.4 update to try and make the timing more consistent. Let me know if you notice any difference.

Last thing I can think of to try is deleting ~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.cornerspeed.kasey.Eve Skill Monitor.plist (where ~ is your home directory). This will clear out the preferences, and you have to put everything in again. Let me know whether or not this works.

I dunno what the heck is going on. I deleted the plist. I deleted the widget. I downloaded it again. And somehow it still appeared with my old info (and consequently doesn't work). Crazy. I'm stumped.
This obviously isn't your fault, Blue Wraith. Not sure what else we can do...

Edited by: Blue Wraith on 15/12/2007 07:50:18 v2.1.0 released
Theme support added. 12-hr time format now used
To design a theme NOTE: It's pretty late right now, and I hope I'm not talking non-sense. Only the front is currently theme-able. Use the default Glass theme as a guide. Some knowledge of CSS will be required. However, if you stick with the same image sizes as the Glass theme, you can reuse Glass's CSS for your theme. Design your graphics to your liking. Reuse parts of the Glass theme if desired. The graphics for ESM were originally designed in layers (separate images for shadow, background, glass effects, etc.). You do not have to use layers, but I would recommend it. For each theme, you can have different "backgrounds". For instance, Glass has several colors available. You can specify as many or as few "backgrounds" for your theme as you like. The way the CSS is laid out, you can have the visual effects separate from the background and the widget will only change the background image when the user selects a different one.
You may send me your themes and I will include them in the next release of ESM for everyone to use. However, please test your themes before you send them. Below is how you can incorporate your theme into your local copy of the widget in order to test it.
Step 1: Place your graphics files in a folder underneath the Themes folder in the widget. To get into the widget folder, go to ~/Library/Widgets. Then right-click on Eve Skill Monitor.wdgt and click Show Package Contents. The Themes folder is there. Open that and create a new folder with the name of your theme (wouldn't recommend spaces in the folder name). Place your graphics in that folder however you like. You can look at the Glass theme for an example. It is found in Themes/Glass.
Step 2: Create the CSS (or copy and modify the Glass theme's CSS to work for you) to arrange all the widget elements however you like them. Then add a style tag for your CSS to the Eve Skill Monitor.html page. Glass is there for an example.
If you're familiar with CSS, between the CSS and graphics you can change nearly anything about the widget (sizes, positioning, etc.). I have not made provisions in the code for the overall size of the widget to be changed drastically. So, try to keep it around the same overall size. Let me know if you want to see something different there.
Step 3: Open Classes/themes.js and add your theme information. You can copy and paste the Glass example and change the properties. You can specify as many or as few "background" properties as you like.
When in doubt, look at the Glass example and just play around. If worse comes to worse, all you have to do is download the widget again, and it will overwrite any changes you made to the old one.
Let me know if there are any problems with Theme support, and let me know if there's anything else I can add to.
Next on the features roster is actual skill finish notification, via an audible message and/or email.

It might save you a lot of work if you use Growl for that. You provide events to Growl and the user configures the kind of notification he likes. Eh, yeah I suppose I could do one of those. I'll add it to the TODO list.
I think I'll make it where you can click on the skill finish time to change formats, so no option on the back for it, since it's a minor feature. Unless the system setting is easier to get, and then I'll use that.

I'm impressed that you made it all the way down to the end of that post.
Notifications will not take a lot of coding the way I finally decided to implement them (with help from a fellow Eve pilot). I'll basically put the widget timer in silent mode when you close Dashboard. It will fire as infrequently as possible and not update any UI components. The sound will be played simply by inserting an embed object. The email will be sent out simply by using the command-line mail command. (I still need to test this to be sure... but I use the mail command in *nix system admin for this same thing.)
I have considered Growl and at some point may provide support for it. The main problem with I have with Growl being the only notification system is that some users may not already use it (I don't currently, though some of the apps I use support it). If they don't already use it, then I'm putting them in the situation where they will have to download a full app to take advantage of a feature in a widget. That seems backwards to me.

Blue Wraith already knows this, but I'm currently working on three theme sets for the EVE Skill Monitor:
Aura This design is based around the actual EVE in-game interface, available in eight colors, similar to the default Glass theme. Black Blue Red Purple Orange Green Gold Brown
Empires This design is based around the 5 major empires in EVE, it will include images representing each Empire, as well as their logos. Amarr Minmatar Gallente Caldari Jove
Trinity This design is based around the new graphics content, and will feature screenshots of the new ship models and the new logo, 5 color schemes in all. Arbitrator Tempest Megathron Merlin Black (generic)
If anyone has any ideas for other themes that they'd like to see, let me know.

Just put up 2.2.0.
Additions Audible and Visual notification: Within 1 minute of your skill completing, Dashboard opens (in case you aren't around to hear the sound), and the "Skill Training Completed" Eve sound plays.
Fixes Fixed a bug that showed the wrong background when changing themes a certain way. Fixed a logic error in the update process that would cause it to hang in rare circumstances.
Theme Design Changes Moved the info button CSS definition into the theme CSS file so you can position it wherever you like. See Glass.css for an example.
Notes Davan's themes are almost ready. Expect them in the next release or the one after (if I'm quick). Will be working on optional email notification. As always, let me know if there's a bug I didn't catch.

Oh cool. Had I known there was another skill monitoring widget, I may have never created ESM. I started ESM because I needed a skill monitor. It was just before the API came out, and I later rewrote it for the API.
I'd like to get your skin into ESM. The backgrounds from your skin would probably need to be resized to make it easier to integrate into ESM. If you feel like packaging that up into an ESM theme, I'll be happy to add it to the theme list.

After I released the new version, I got to thinking about that. I don't know how Dashboard will react. Let me know (preferably w/o yelling and screaming if possible) if something adverse happens to you.
If it's an issue, I can implement some command line stuff to check if Eve is running before opening Dashboard. I'll go ahead and add that to my TODO list.

Works like a charm for me. Thanks for your great work.
Although...it would be cool if the widget could check to see if Eve is running. If a skill completes while Eve is running, then there's no need for an audible notice from the Widget (because it happens in the client). If Eve is not currently running, then the "Skill Training Complete" sound is quite useful. Your thoughts?

I thought about this, but there is also the circumstance where you have one character training a skill, but you are using a different character on that account when the first character's skill finishes. I don't currently know of a way to tell which character you are logged into.
Perhaps that is too rare of a circumstance, but worst case is an extra skill finish alert, and it avoids me having to add code. :)
If most of you do not want the extra alert, I can change it.

After resetting your API Key, all you should have to do is put in the new information (new User Id and new API Key) on the back of the widget. If doing this does not work, then let me know so I can fix it.
If you really want to, you can nuke the preference file by deleting:
~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.cornerspeed.kasey.Eve Skill Monitor.plist
where '~' is your home directory. This will reset information on all ESM widgets.

Glad you've liked the widget so far.
Skill Monitor Cocoa (SMC) is not my app. I link to it at the head of this thread because it is interesting and looked to be the closest thing to EveMon for a Mac currently available. I did submit a feature request for skill planning in SMC, and last I heard (months ago), Cel Halcyon was working on it. It is listed in Trac as follows:
Name: Skill Planning Functionality Priority: major Description: Get along to reproducing EVEMon's planning functionality somehow, someday.
Quote: What can we expect in near future regarding your apps?
( really waiting for something like evemon for Mac)
I currently have no plans to add EveMon functionality (skill planning, ore calcs, and a partridge in a pare tree) to the ESM widget. I believe that to be outside the scope of what a widget encompasses. In order to do that, a full-fledged application would probably need to be made. I am hopeful that SMC will be the application that accomplishes this.

As far as the picture issue, that only means your picture has not yet been copied to the external Eve Image Server. It will take some time (hopefully less than a week) for it to get there and then you will be able to see it.

The simple answer to this question is: as soon as the data becomes available. It should be 15 mins to an hour at most.
Here's the whole answer:
As near as I can tell, there is a separate (external) game data server that the Eve website and API use that is only a copy of the actual game data. To avoid dragging down the gameplay from the database constantly copying itself to the external one, they only copy the data over to the external data server periodically; e.g. every 15 minutes or every hour or whatever.
This makes sense from a security perspective, although it's not as convenient as having up to the minute data.
Each time ESM fetches data from the Eve API, the API tells it when new data should be available. ESM waits until then to get data again. If it tried any more frequently, it would get the same cached data as before, regardless of what happened in game, so there's no use in updating more often.
Hope that answers your question. :)

I still haven't got around to checking this out. Which .plist file did you delete? Deleting that file should take out every bit of information. Something could be leftover in Dashboard's internals.
Try removing the widgets from the Dashboard, deleting the plist in ~/Library/Preferences/widget-com.cornerspeed.kasey.Eve Skill Monitor.plist, then logging out and back in (to restart Dashboard).
If that doesn't nuke your preferences, then my guess would be there's something wrong with Dashboard.

Edited by: Blue Wraith on 29/02/2008 22:37:14 ESM v2.2.1 now available.
Fixes: Fixed 12 PM displayed as 12 AM. Fixed (hopefully) API Key changes. If you change API Key info on the back, it should now take effect immediately rather than continuing to display your old info.
Let me know if any other problems arise. Thanks to those that pointed out the above bugs.

Maybe you should update your first post it still says 2.2.0 is the latest version.
Great widget though, really waiting on the cocoa app. Unfortunately I cannot program that much, but testing I will do when a complete app is released!

Version 2.2.2 now available.
Additions: Clickable 12 or 24 hr time format for the Skill Finish data. Click on the time to toggle between them.
Fixes: Minor UI tweak to actually center the OK button on warning dialogs. It's been annoying me for some time, and I finally got around to fixing it.

To monitor multiple accounts, just plop another widget on the dashboard.
ESM v2 was initially going to be a multi-account widget. I saw that a single-account widget was going to be the fastest way to get a working widget, so I took that path first. A single-account widget also has certain advantages for a crowded dashboard (being able to place the widgets other than vertically).
ESM could be converted to a multi-account widget, but I really don't see a compelling reason to do so just yet. The only thing I could think of that you can do with a multi-account widget but not with multiple single-account ones is sort the widgets by skill finish order. Probably not everyone would even like that feature.
I'm always open for suggestions, though.

One of the pictures back in the thread shows some sort of "border" between two widgets. It appears that the widgets are aware of each other and "stuck" to each other, then displayed a border to indicate that they were stuck.

The "total skillpoints" attribute shows how many you have at this moment, right? And not what you will have after the skill completes, or am I totally wrong here?
Because it looks like that my "total skillpoints" attribute is not updating. It is still the same as two days ago (maybe even the same as before the patch, but I'm not sure about that). And I haven't switched skills in between.
Does it has anything to do with the API or the widget? I haven't tried evemon or checking ingame because I didn't have time yet.

A small story for you:
Ralumos is sitting in his Systems Administration II class, and there's about an hour left. Boredom is setting in, so he decides to get out his trusty MacBook and surf a little.
He opens the lid, gets ready to type in his password, when suddenly the boring silence of the classroom is pierced by the deafeningly loud cry of "SKILL TRAINING COMPLETED."
All heads turn, and the professor stops speaking. Ral shrinks into his chair and says "Sorry...turning volume off." In the back of the room one student exclaims "EVE ONLINE, AWESOME!"
Moral of the story: I'd really like an option to turn off the skill ending notification, or at the very least make it wait until Dashboard is actually activated. I normally keep my volume on mute, but I can't change it until I've logged in, and the widget does its damage before that.

I just noticed the Used Memory readout for iStat was showing an unusually high readout for what I'm doing (watching a low-res video), so I popped open Activity Monitor to see what's using memory.
The widget is using 109MB of memory at the moment, and it's increasing every time I open the Dashboard. Leakage methinks?
(Also, what language, and IDE, did you write the widget in, out of interest...?)

The short answer is that ESM shows your total skill points, not counting what is currently training. This should be the same as what the in-game total skill points shows.
Whenever ESM downloads your skill sheet (every hour or so), it goes through all your skills and sums the SP for each. When a skill is training, it doesn't accumulate skill points on your skill sheet. It's in a "training limbo" of sorts. It's not until the skill finishes or you change to a different skill that the trained points show up on your character sheet. ESM doesn't do any extra training projections over what the game does. The total you see in ESM should be the same total you see on the char sheet.

LOL! That's a funny story.
Quote: I'd really like an option to turn off the skill ending notification, or at the very least make it wait until Dashboard is actually activated.
This latter part, you can do w/o ESM's help: Take Dashboard off auto-start. In fact, I had done this so long ago, that I took it for granted and falsely assumed it was the default. I don't even have a Dashboard icon on my dock anymore (I use the keyboard to activate it.). Anyway, I believe you can turn it off by going to System Preferences -> Accounts -> Login Items tab and removing it there.
In your case, I believe disabling Dashboard from auto-starting is the best practice. Even if ESM currently had an NSFW mode, you would have had to plan ahead and turn it on before class.

The widget doesn't use any plugins, so it is purely DHTML / AJAX, with Javascript being the programming language. Personally, I view Javascript as a terrible tool, but it's the best (only) tool available for the job. Javascript does expect auto garbage collection (probably the WebKit framework handles this).
There are various stages in the ESM's run cycle that may consume a bit of memory, like downloading and parsing all skills (once a month), or downloading and parsing the character sheet (every hour or so). If the garbage truck takes a while to get there, I could see how that could add up. Still, 100 meg seems a bit high. A single DashboardClient process services multiple (maybe 8?) widgets, so hopefully some of that was other widgets as well? Were you looking at VSIZE or RSIZE? RSIZE is the important number. VSIZE is Dashboard's over-guesstimate of what memory it needs.

I don't have the dashboard in autostart. But if I wake my iBook from sleep my dashboard will automatically open and ESM will tell me that my skill finished training. This all happens before I can type my pw to unlock my laptop and thus am not able to mute it before ESM starts speaking up.
Happily I almost always have my volume muted and not having a skill finishing somewhere when I'm not able to access my PC to change it (sorry I still have one of those ancient PPC procs).

Ah, so the laptop was asleep. I'm not really sure how to tell if the laptop just woke from sleep. If there was a system command that could tell me this, I could implement a 5 min wait before sounding the alert or something. I'll add this to the list.

Try this. Go to your Home directory, the the following path: Library/Widgets. Right-click on "Eve Skill Monitor.wdgt" the "Show Package Contents." Double-click on the "Sounds" folder and delete the "SkillTrained.mp3" inside. See if that helps. I just did it but I don't have a skill set to complete training for another 30 mins, so I'm not sure if it will just move along with no sound (expected behavior) or crash.
Quick follow-up: The MP3 will likely not be "empty trash"able. You may need to restart.

I notice ESM, when connected to a network, checks the API with enough frequency that it prevents the Mac from sleeping automatically. Can that be changed? Perhaps add a "manual update" for the API and set the automatic time at 30-60 minutes.

I've recently been getting an occasional character does not belong to account error from ESM when I open my dashboard (mostly the first time - I don't have dashboard start at logon) If I click ok everything works fine - the countdown continues and skill changes are correctly reflected in ESM so I'm not sure what is going on. Anyone else seen this and is there anything I can do or is it an API problem ?

Yeah my Dashboard isn't on autostart and never has been. I keep my laptop on mute 90% of the time, but if it isn't one time, I can't use my laptop until I'm in a situation where that noise is appropriate. That's quite a high cost for a single widget.
Can't we just have a checkbox for the sound? I'd be fine getting rid of it altogether, but I realize I might be in the minority with that.

I have not noticed that particular issue, my iMac goes to sleep as scheduled, and wakes up as normal. With the exception of the Dashboard popping up if the skill finished while it was asleep.

Updated ESM to v2.2.3.
Added the much-requested Mute button for the "Skill Training Completed" sound. The Mute button is per account. So if you don't want to hear any sound, mute each account. But if you want to be alerted for a certain account, you still can.

I believe I used syntax highlighting in vim, but I couldn't take the vim interface anymore, since I'd been using a graphical editor throughout the day at work. VIM is great, don't get me wrong. I've written a LOT of stuff in VIM, including most of ESM v2.x. I just got used to being able to double-click a word to select it and paste over it, etc., so I switched to something graphical. I've installed it but am having a problem. It keeps asking me for the User ID, even though it's there. For some reason it doesn't see it. If I go to the back of the widget through the 'i' symbol, it shows up. Just isn't seeing it on the flip side.

Try this: remove the user id from the back, flip it over to the front, flip it over to the back again, and re-enter the user id. Flip back over again and see if that fixes it.
If that doesn't work, email me a screenshot of where it asks for your user id. My email is on the website. I'm curious about this, because aside from the back of the widget, it should not prompt you for a user id anywhere.

Tilanali's problem was solved by reinstalling the widget. I must have introduced a bug that hosed up the prefs in the new version under certain circumstances. It's working fine for me, but several have had issues like this one. If you're having an issue, then re-install the widget, and if that doesn't work, log out and back in, delete the preferences file ([Home]/Library/Preferences/widget-com.cornerspeed.kasey.Eve Skill Monitor.plist), and then start the widget. That should start you with a blank slate.

Thanks for the link.
I don't have anything for Eve on my dev schedule. If I were to do something else for Eve, it would probably be a web-based ship fitter and skill planner (that could import from EveMon). Web-based so you could access it anywhere.
However, I don't really play anymore (except to change skills). So, I don't have much enthusiasm to create it.

You should see results almost immediately after you flip the widget back over.
I hope you didn't put your game username and password in the widget. That goes clear-text over the internet to the Eve server (clear-text is the only protocol they allow) and can be sniffed. If you did, I would change your password ASAP.
You can obtain an API Key from the eve website here. The numeric API User ID and the alpha-numeric API Key are what the widget uses to get your information from the Eve servers.

pp.s: sorry, was a problem with my firewall...is working now
ehm works now (still says couldn't connect but loads data) but doesn't display the char image...only the missing-image "?"
The Eve Image Server was down for a while. However ESM detects broken images and tries to fix them periodically. So, when the server comes back up, your image will eventually update to what the Eve Image Server has (the exclamation point in your case).
When you have a Couldn't Connect message on the screen after showing the Dashboard, that just means that at some point, while ESM was in the background, it tried to connect and couldn't. It has probably since connected and the error message is irrelevant. I'll try to fix that for the next release.

Needs to be updated for Apocrypha (refreshes too fast, training stats for < 1.6 M SP, queues etc). Needs an option for not popping up a training complete warning untill the queue is done. Needs at least an option to swow time to end of queue instead of skill (better yet just show both ETAs). I'd love it if the "cannot conect" case were less intrusive (on the portable I'm most of the times not connected, and still want to see the ETA).

There's a bug in ESM that makes it update like crazy after my macbook is in sleep for a long time. It is especially annoying when CCP starts returning 500 for requests and I just don't have patience to click thru all these warnings with OK button (so I had to delete widget and redrag it to dashboard).
For a solution see this diff: http://git.kitsu.ru/patched/ESM.git/commitdiff/84195bbb842949fcf18e1fb4edd444a6a3c9eeb1
Expire times should always be relative to current time, otherwise it starts updating for all those 5-minute intervals my computer was in sleep mode.
P.S. I don't know if there's any public repo for ESM, if there is I'd be happy to rebase.

Great little widget! I've been using it for a long time. But after the last expansion it's been displaying current skill training and time completely wrong quite often.
Right now it tells me I've got over five days left on a skill that's only got 2 days and 12 hours to go.

One thing that would be lovely for you to fix: the 'authentication failure' popup. It is impossible for me to click through to the ID and API key windows to enter my information, as the popup keeps appearing every .3 seconds. ____________________________________________________________

Err..Just logged in real quick to check my skills, popped up my dashboard and I have four characters (2 are mine, 2 are friend's)
What wierded me out is when OS X was still loading a bit (I hit that dashboard key fast) it showed your name and character for a few seconds and then the skill you were training. I didn't catch the name, but it had 78 days left as of 14:30 EST (GMT -5)
Was this a place holder, or did I actually connect to your API for a second there? If so, it may be something to look into...

I agree, a loading bar would be neater than a default screen, caching might be good, or bad.. depends on how you look at it. Perhaps it should say cached, updating (in progress), and updated (on system stamp?) somewhere? I don't know!

Edited by: Chiang Lu on 11/10/2009 16:56:08 Hi, I've been using this great widget for a while now and it's been pretty good.
However, when a skill finishes training, the dashboard pops up (without me pressing anything). And it often has difficulty changing to the next skill in the queue. That's the only problems I've had with it. I'm sure the dashboard pop-up is to do with the ESM widget, as it only happens when the current skill finishes training.
I'm running it on Snow Leopard 10.6.1.

I'm running mine on Leopard and have the same problem as Chiang Lu, though with one difference: if I happen to be running EVE when one of my skills finishes training, my EVE client often crashes. I've now taken to making sure none of my skills finish while I'm in-game or strategically disabling the wiget. Not really ideal, tbh. But still better than nothing, I suppose. |
