We're considering to create a video tutorial for new players and we'd like to know what you think would be good to include in it. What we're aiming for is a video tutorial to complement a text and images tutorial/player guide, and we'd like to put things in there that can not be explained as well with just text and images. Meaning, what can we put in a video tutorial that cannot be explained just as well in a text and image tutorial/player guide?
We'd like to hear opinions from people in different stages of their EVE existance, both new and veteran players. Please post approximately how long you've played EVE together with your opinion of what we should have in the video tutorial.

That's a perfect example of something that can easily be explained in a simple image and text guide though.
We're looking for things that's hard to explain that way, things that only a video tutorial could explain well enough.

Ok Ive been playing on and off since launch, im my most recent incarnation Ive been playing for a couple of months.
In my most honest opinion it would be very valuable to help new players know "what to do next" you get through the tutorials, you do some missions and get left there thinking, ok so what now? just give people some hints on what they can do or where to go, or what kind of corp to look for to give them that little helping hand out the door. This game has massive scope and its very very daunting to the new face when they get left on their own after the tutorial (hell I was when I came back after a couple of year break! and i knew roughly what to expect!).

Edited by: Lucy Light on 05/07/2007 13:07:31 you can't just have one video, but possibly a few divided by category? maybe also by difficulty?
also it depends how far you want to go. do you want to a number of short one-action tutorials, or a slightly longer one that teaches also a few general tactics in different scenarios?
I dont think it should be in game either, bu possibly on the eve site, maybe under eve downloads.
i think a few alliances or people did already some of these and they are available on youtube or eve files
here's a few ideas here and there
ship > identyfing ship strenghts > switching ships > requiremets for fitting > what to fit where > what to fit where and why to a basic degree (ie armor repairer on a ship with armor repairer bonus)
flying around > warping vs free flight > jumping, map, autopilot
fight > how to to chose fittings > targeting and shooting > using drones launching, attack, return > tanking explained (speed, armor, shield) > electronic warfare (jamming, dampening, etc)
mining > finding roids and types > mining fittings > mining vs hauling
market > looking for things in the market > searching for things in the market > checking prices > selling things on the market
skills > skill trees > training skills > buying skills
scanning / exploring > scanning for ships vs exploring > fittings > using the right probes
address book > managing friends > sending email > opening and dealing with convos > creating mailing, chat
there are so many videos that could be made: from explaing the different functionalities of the left menu, to station facilities and how to use them

I play Eve since 2004.
New players should see in a tutorial the following things. And force it upon players. You can't start playing without watching it :-) and no skipping...
Channels and Mail list - show where you can find them, what it is and what's it for - show how to create, add, remove channels
Wallet - show where to find it - show how to use/configure
Corporation - show where to find, what's in it and why use it
Asset - show where, what, how and of course the search functionality
Fit - Show how to fit a ship - show how to use the info on modules - show how to use the compare tool
Missions - how and where players should accept mission - show where to look for quality, standings, etc.. .towards agents, npc corporations, factions - show them where LP store is.
Mining - show what mods you need - show where to find asteroids
Stealing - show them what it is and how it's done
Concord - show how to get vaporized by Concord
Market - explain the market - show to place buy/sell orders
Building stuff - show what a BPO is and the differences T1 and T2 - show how to obtain (mention that Faction/Officer BPO are not seeded) - show how to research it ME and PE - show where to do this research - show how to copy and where
Exploration - show them on the map how to find a site - show them how to enter one, analyze, codebreak, salvage, etc..
Contracts - show how make a contract - show how to see which ones are assigned to you
Heat - show what and how
POS - show how to anker a POS - show how to moon harvest - show how to build in space
Invention - show what is needed to start inventing (materials, data cores, data interfaces, decryptors) - show what is needed, skills - show the result
Just a few things

I think for the complete beginner customising the overview is vital to doing almost anything (travelling, targetting, etc). I used to spend ages spinning around trying to locate the stargates in space because I didn't know they could be added to the overview. Plus there are a few ways to add something to the overview and some of the extra columns you can add are invaluable for combat. I know it can be explained with text and images but seeing it done makes a huge difference. The goonfleet tutorials on youtube made it all clear to me.

When a player has reached the stage that he/she would start to need something, include it in a tutorial that plays automatically, not play it at the start of the game, where he/she may forget by the stage it is neccessary

I would like to see the whole tutorial broken up into special agent missions that are narriated because listneing to Ora for over an hour makes on want to abandon the tutorial. I have had 3 people I wanted to get playing eve quit in thier trial because they couldnt stand the boring tutorial and didnt know how to play the game otherwise.... I saved one by being the alternate tutorial guide, but I cant keep that.

These arent things that can be said in a image intro, they are stuff like aligning, tackling 101, and many other useful action that need to be taught in such a way if not by a friend.

I've been in EVE now a better part of 2 weeks. Fascinating from start to present. I still find that some of the most entertaining parts of the world are continuing to learn and figure out the subtleties.
I thought the players guide and video tutorial were fantastic. However, I've found most people dont have the tenacity I have to browse a manual quite so long before diving in. Different people learn different ways I suppose.
To directly answer this aspect however...
Quote: Meaning, what can we put in a video tutorial that cannot be explained just as well in a text and image tutorial/player guide?
I would suggest concentrating on the more complex aspects (and stuff I still dont know after a few weeks). For example:
- Fleets/Battles/PvP. What to expect, what they look like, how to set them up, different ship strategies. If you're a group of 10 noobs that are new to EVE the only way to currently learn this is within somebody elses established corp.
- Manufacturing/Blueprints/Invention/MaterialResearch. This seems to be a common topic in rookie chat. I still lack the understanding of many concepts here. Thankfully others in my noob group have figure it out quite well and shared the knowledge.
- Rigs. Not necessarily a needed video topic, but yet another common question in rookie chat. Its not immediately obvious what the upgrade hardpoints are for.
- Trade. How can one be an effective trader? It's nearly an esoteric mystery. It takes several hours sitting down with the skillsets and forum reading to get just a beginners grip on how to use the trade skills effectively for this career route.
- Building and Maintaining structures. Oh good grief it'll be months before I get to this point, but its such a delicious thing to look forward to. However, it'll be a bit daunting spending millions of ISK in a trial by fire way to make sure I've bought the right tools for my intentions.
- Scanning. What DOES that button really do? Yes, I read the tutorial, but the jury is still out on its usefulness. I'm sure if I knew how to really use it, it would enrich my playing experience.
In closing I would recommend that the current Tutorial is just fine. However an expanded video tutorial would be helpful for career paths (Combat, Mining, Mfr, Trade, Corp Mgmt) and career paths specifically within small group play (aka you and your 5 noob friends you convinced to sign up to EVE). Basically weeks 1-2 the tutorial handles well. Something for week 2-4 players would be great too.
Thats my 0.02 ISK. Enjoy. --Fetischka

The Unwritten Rules of EVE: 1) Never undock a ship that you can't afford to lose (fittings and cargo, included) 2) No space is safe space 3) ALWAYS get FULL insurance on any ship you fly. 4) Never haul more than 20 million worth of goods into Jita in a T1 hauler 5) Always keep local open in low sec space 6) Always check the map for activity when traveling through low sec 7) Always use warp-to-0km when traveling in low sec, especially in 0.0 8) Never go AFK in a low sec system while undocked 9) Never mine solo in a barge/exhumer in low sec 10) Always make safespots in low sec systems that you visit frequently
How to find an Agent is also good info

I've been ingame now for 6 months and have ran into plenty of people with no clue on thier overview. Would be nice to show a vid on right clicking in empty space to show roids, gates, stations and how to go to. Also how to add to overview and setting up your overview. I belive a video would let them SEE what it looks like, better than a picture and text.

The guys above pointed the main aspects so I don't need to say more. BUT. I think it will be better to make a tutorial for every aspect. Ex: mining video tutorial, navigation video tutorial, finding agents... etc. This way the file will be smaller to download and you don't have to rewind :).
Anyway you do it it's a very good ideea because images say more than a thousand words.
Good luck.

I'm not sure that a CCP-produced video set is really necessary. There are quite a few sites, BattleClinic included, that offer new player interactive resources that people often find superior to a video.
If you're thinking of producing one video, we've found that people get "information overload" especially in a game as complex as EVE. Our experience is that people prefer information chunked and searchable. If you produce video topics, that's great--but it's already been done, as the Goonies have pointed out. And aren't you undercutting EVE-TV a bit? (Yes, I know it's pay-to-see, but they are a CCP partner...)
Alternatively, e-learning modules such as what we've produced at BattleClinic, coupled with video extracts, might be received better. Link to Module Example. We've found this format very well received and we'd be willing to share our expertise with CCP here.
Finally, it's established that learning-by-doing is the best teacher of all. Maybe CCP could continue to refine and extend the tutorial experience in new and interesting ways.
Sincerely, SghnDubh, who in real life owns a corporate training and learning company

I've been playing about 6 months but I'm helping teach a brand new player right now.
Basic navigation and warp techniques like aligning on your exit point durring a fight.
Secondly, a demo of mission combat would be cool on video.
Thirdly, a demo of what happens when you make Concord angry may be neat.

I recently made an Amarr(sp?) character and was going through the tut missions for that race when I came across one mish that required me to invent a Villard Wheel. I went through the tut explanation and reread the mission details about 10 times and still couldn't figure it out. I asked for help in the Rookie channel in-game and no one could offer advise on it there. I still have yet to complete that mish.
I would elect to add the invention / production process and procedure to the video.

I agree with the requests for manufacturing procedures.
How to manufacture from BPO/BPC. How to copy BPO to make a BPC. How to research.
Each showing where to click and what do. (yes this could be done with images and text, but the message is usually always better put across in a video).
The same goes for security.
What happens when you steal cargo, including flashing red and getting attacked. Identifying a gate camp in low security. A brief video clip showing module overloading.
