I have been playing for 3 years and i still remember the tutorial as being pretty clear to me. I think the one thing that needs to be fully explained to new players is how to find information for themselves and what information is important to them. For instance, using the show info button on ships, modules and the like, what the myriad information in the attriutes for ships means and why it is or is not important for what they want to do. There are still things in there I don't fully understand.

One of the main issues for me when joining the game is knowing that my little kestrel would be useful in PvP among all the battleships. It took someone to explain to me tackling and show me how to chase someone down and web them etc...
Someone I introduced a week or so ago thought this as well... That once you're in a BS, why go back to a frigate?
I guess what I'm saying is include a short PvP guide?

How about finding agents after they have finished the tutorial, it takes ages to get them to understand it. ______________________________

Some short clips on the subject Aurua is going over would be good, just to reinforce it; because if you aren't concentrating its easy to miss something.
Most people I know don't go through the entire tutorial when they first start playing (I didn't); so a quick 'n dirty guide would be a good idea. Something less than 10mins long that can hold the viewers attention easily. It should go through the bare minimum to survive in empire & low sec.
A video for 0.0 would be good too. When people make that first jump to live deep in uncharted regions, they are often dazzled by the thought of giant rats and exotic 'roids but aren't aware of the practicalities and logistics that must be overcome in order to survive. Combat is also very different in 0.0. So a video aimed not at complete n00bs for 0.0 would be a great addition.

Been playing for 6 months.
+1 for a video overview of the races and their ships.
Also, a Tracking/Missiles 101 video would make the complex mechanics behind them easier to grasp.

i am a begginer and would like to see many of the things suggested by pepole such as lucy light /would it be poss to run seperate videos of missions which could incl minning /marketing/buing equipment/setting up a new ship/possibley showing the +/- of dif set ups also include missions aimed to improve basic knowledge /understanding of eve and not just kill a baddy// as a newby i would have liked to see some alternative routes explained /i am sure that some with more experience will say learn the hard way as we did /but i think eve would benefit from us newbys learning quicker and becomming more proficient

I have been playing eve for almost a year. As much as I think goons are a disgusting waste of space and need to be exterminated for eve as thoroughly as possible, checkout their training videos on you tube.
They cover the basics, and are as simple as possible, and do a really good job of it. Also, the fact that they are on youtube shows that it is possible to make an informative video that is a downloadable size.
~~~~~~~~
I have recently been training an alt which involves reading rookie chat while I train short skills. From the most frequently asked questions, I think some things that could be explained will in videos are:
-Ship fitting (perhaps introduction to different weapons, tanking, etc.) -Ship types (explain bonuses, probably keep it to frigs and not much more) -Mission running (the basic structure of a mission from acceptance to handing it in, for kill, courier etc) -Mining (just basic mining, perhaps selling minerals) -R&D (...yeah) -Finding agents (most newbies don't even know they can do it) -Using the market (tell them not to just click on sell) -The overview (just an intro to what the buttons do) -Moving in space (warping to things, and setting the autopilot)
also it depends how far you want to go. do you want to a number of short one-action tutorials, or a slightly longer one that teaches also a few general tactics in different scenarios?
I dont think it should be in game either, bu possibly on the eve site, maybe under eve downloads.
i think a few alliances or people did already some of these and they are available on youtube or eve files
here's a few ideas here and there
ship > identyfing ship strenghts > switching ships > requiremets for fitting > what to fit where > what to fit where and why to a basic degree (ie armor repairer on a ship with armor repairer bonus)
flying around > warping vs free flight > jumping, map, autopilot
fight > how to to chose fittings > targeting and shooting > using drones launching, attack, return > tanking explained (speed, armor, shield) > electronic warfare (jamming, dampening, etc)
mining > finding roids and types > mining fittings > mining vs hauling
market > looking for things in the market > searching for things in the market > checking prices > selling things on the market
skills > skill trees > training skills > buying skills
scanning / exploring > scanning for ships vs exploring > fittings > using the right probes
address book > managing friends > sending email > opening and dealing with convos > creating mailing, chat
there are so many videos that could be made: from explaing the different functionalities of the left menu, to station facilities and how to use them
PERFECT IDEAS I TOTALLY AGREE! :)
(i have to add though that i never really felt the lack of a good tutorial. If you pay attention to the tutorial as it is you will find out how to get started. I wouldnt like a tutorial to open the game to me completly from the beggining anyway. Sometimes is good not to offer to much info on a starting player. Also in very nice to be able to "unlock" the game's secrets little by little and by yourself. But if it was to create a video tutorial i would agree with the post i quoted.
There are a few points that for me would make a lot of sense to include in a video: - actions that would require other players to perform (forming a gang - gang controls - various team actions) - an explanation on some of the important icons in the overview and what additional colors mean. -other ships, other's property, rats, negative sec rating, etc.- (it took me 2 months to figure out that the yellow accent in players names mean negative sec. rep. - a short demonstration on what happens when you cross concord :D - drone operations
How to create a safe spot bookmark would be easier with video.
Hmmm, perhaps the technique of mining into a jet-can, and then that could also show what happens when an ore-thief shows up and you aren't protected.
I've played Eve for three months now, and the problem I've countered many times may be silly one, but it's still here - when you're ganked it's really hard to understand, what's going on and what do you have to do - fly away and warp out or strike back. I think a short clip showing shuttle being attacked by a pirate and then flying away from scrambler's range and warping out would've been very useful for newbies, showing them that even in a shuttle you still have hope :)
Reading through (skimming) this tread I see many people requesting videos on how to play the game which is great and it is defiantly needed. But I would love if someone could create a 'History of EVE' video and I'm not talking about a two minute story about we came through the worm hole and the 'you know what' hit the fan. I want to know what has happened in eve from day one to present including all NPC disputes, Market crashes, assignations and defiantly a lot about the player corps and alliances that have been influential in the making of EVE history e.g ASCN and there demise.
I dunno if others have said it yet or not, but what about fitting? Not talking about best fitting, but how it works. How do u install a gun or an armour rep? Also, what happens if you stack? And anything else that involves fitting.
I sure remember spending time on what the whole fitting a ship meant. Please don't shoot me, I'm fragile. |
Now that's a good exemple on why it's mandatory to tech players how to properly fit and fly a frig...
To the Poster>>> you wanna know why you'd wanna go back to a frig.... cauz it's waaaaay cheaper than the BS...it's fast and agile...and two can take down a BS...
I do not want this. There is no tutorial in life, especially a video tutorial. ever since the tut was lengthened was when pvp started to decrease.
I say the only tutorial should be for the GUI. When I first started playing it was "heres a ship, theres some npcs. click this to lock and this to fire, everything else figure out on your own."
Now it tells you about everything in the whole damn game which is why there is no more tactics, only blobs.
A video tut will only make it worse.
really? last time I checked real life I was watching a divers ed video and in college I was being lectured about how to draw biology
so you saying that blobs are made by more informed players? and not by players would have been taught how to win smaller battles?
How to find an Agent is also good info
... lets see ... i would not recommend you to tell rookies : first , not to undock in a pricy ship ( if not then why did you buy it ?) and then, always have full insurance ( a rookie pilot will no longer go unaware to a low sec system thanks to this vid , so there is really not much risk, and not insuring will save the pilot some ISKs. however, do tell him that when taking a risk its always smart to buy some insurance. everything else in your list is fine
I think the video tutor is a great idea. i've just got through the 14 day trial, and just signed up. I think it's a fun game, and haven't even got that deep. I would love to see some tutorials on how to upgrade your ship. what does what, and whats best for your particular ship. Also some help on fighting, like tactics and also how to size up your enemy a little to determine what kinds of weapons you need. going back to what i was talking about when upgrading your ship. i've already lost 4 ships on one mission, and never completed it. one other thing i never understood, and when your in the middle of congested are of space with large wrecks, stations, meteors, etc... when you click on something on the other side and click approach, your ship tries to go through the other objects, and bounces off of them. you end up having to double click around it.
HOW many times do I get this exact question in FNA chat! Seriously you devs should hang around in the newbie corps for a bit-you will quickly learn what are the most common questions
As for the question-rig slots are for rigs. Rigs are like implants for your ships (and are made with salvaged materials). Percentage bonus to your ship (and most have a percentage drawback), permanent (you can remove them, but you lose the rig), and horrendously expensive. Few are cheaper than 8M, and most are 15M+. I would not recommend putting rigs on any ships cheaper than a battlecruiser.
And what I would like to see Decent fitting for the races-I can't count how many Gallente newbs put on shield boosters! The strategies behind tanking (i.e. armor reppers to cover for incoming damage, armor hardeners/membranes to make each point of armor count for more, which is synenergistic with reppers, and cap rechargers to keep the whole shebang going). The very basic skills such as engineering and electronics. Tactics (such as straight-line long-range-weapon kites for PvE). Specialization is key. If you try to do more than one thing at once, you won't do well at anything This goes for mixing weapon ranges. Get that in the tutorial, PLEASE! Salvage = ISK. The Villard Wheel problem. Finishing the in-game tutorial (wag the carrot of 2 free ships, 500k ISK, 2 +1 implants, skillbooks, and basic modules, plus invaluable instruction). Starting race/skills matter not. Damage control units = good. Wouldn't hurt to have a second tracking and missiles guide. Cloaking, staying safe in lowsec, etc. NEVER, EVER go in a ship before you have the skills to handle it. A pilot who takes out a battleship in a month gets an insurance payout in a month and 4 hours. ------------------------------ One more soldier off to war... And one Velator in my hangars. |
Edited by: Marlos Atreides on 09/07/2007 02:26:06 no tto sure how well this might be received but while I was playing SWG they added a tutorial station were only new caracters could go.
Maybe have a off-line system tutorial for the new players were while they can experiment on how to create a caracter and get an ideal of what skills are out there ( they can't buy them but they can look), as well as alot of the things that the other posters have mentioned.
**-----------------**---------------------** blood, carnage, and distruction may be my "happy place" but that is nothing like the feeling I get from hauling 2mill isk worth of good thru low sec. |
Take new players though the steps to join a player corporation including the recruitment channel, applying etc. I was wandering around like a fool for my first 2 weeks in eve and got very frustrated.
Also include a visual tutorial on using the map and all its little menus to get around.
