Ok first, NO VIDEO, seriously, what are you aiming for a 45mb file?? no way a new player is going to download that just to learn stuff.
I always get sad when you guys say that you want to improve the tutorial but never remember the "feeling" the first time a person executed the game and see the welcome screen. You are eager to play right away...it doesn't matter if they don't know how to.
If you want things animated to explain hard-to-describe stuff, then do it on FLASH ANIMATIONS. Lighter, can be used in a web-browser while playing eve without bogging the resources on the machine and fired at any moment.
Stuff hard to explain with words?
-POS anchoring, structure anchoring/onlining and POS managment. -Gang warping. -Fleet battle in 50vs50 or larger (warping to gangmates, why position matters, etc). -Overview advanced settings and how the translate visually!!! (we had an mp3 to explain on e-uni, was absolutely must-do after you joined the 1st week) and many people were amazed by the power of the overview). -Corp managment interface and roles (i've been a CEO for 3 months and i can't say the interface is intuitive at all).
You really want to improve the game?? then contact e-uni, agony unleashed and RONA academy, those guys KNOW what needs to be taught in order to give a chance to the new players.
*sigh*

Edited by: Capt LucaS on 05/07/2007 15:06:56 Edited by: Capt LucaS on 05/07/2007 15:04:55 I would think HOW TO PVP, would be something to explain. Such as how to set up and use a first ship for PVP. Its is said..... Minmatar ships..seem to be more PVP ships Caldari ships seem to be more Mission Runners.
PVP..the use of key board properly.
There r many suggested rules of thumb out there.
example; more low slots..armor tank more mid slots..shield tank
Tutuorial as it is, leave PVP for people to learn on their own. Use of mods are explained in the info on each item. But tutorial could expand on the general uses of such ship equipment. Shields an what supports shields, what u do not use when setting a ship as a shield tank, like a reactive armor mod. Uses of ECCM, remote sensors etc. Missiles vs cannons The tutorial should for example..take each race, say a frigate, and tell how a experienced PvPer would load out or fit this ship, according to race bonuses.
PVP is a big part of EVE. TUTORIAL I think should be totally optional, and be a reference that a new or old player, who wishes to change goals in game, can refer to for basic information.

Also help on how the standings are affected if you can not complete a mission.

Being a visual learner, I personally love the idea of videos as a training tool. As an instructional designer and courseware developer in RL, here are my suggestions from a professional perspective:
1. Focus tutorial videos on a fairly narrow objective, such as Find a Ship Using the Scanner or Mine and Refine Your Ore and then show the steps needed to accomplish that objective. Include visual cues in the form of text so that the user knows where they are at in the topic at any given time. The objective-based approach differs cognitively from just showing how to use interface features--and helps people understand the bigger picture of what they can do in Eve.
2. Design tutorial videos such that a string of related ones can be viewed in sequence to get an even better understanding of how to put together all the pieces of Eve to accomplish larger, longer term goals.
3. Don't overlook the value of "interview" type videos where people share their thoughts and knowledge on various "soft skills" topics. It's difficult as a noob to really understand all the options before you and what kinds of things impact your choices...from your starting skill set to your race, among about a million other things. Although this kind of information is probably as easily shared in text/image form, the truth is that people love to watch/listen to other people and might get a lot more from videos than written guides. Some candidate topics for "interview" videos might be:
--> Evolving your career path --> Effective training strategies --> Selecting and thriving within a corp --> Maximizing ship fit for different classes of ships --> Market dynamics --> Trade tips and tricks --> Mining tips and tricks --> PVP tips and tricks --> Mission running tips and tricks --> Maximizing profit from missions
A lot of people might moan that this is the kind of stuff that should just be learned from playing the game. I agree there is some value in that, but also feel you do noobs (and their corps and other players they associate with) a big favor by helping them get EVE-savvy as quickly as possible.
Hire me to help.

And yeah, I second the emotion to use Flash so as to allow multimedia tutorials to be interactive and controllable by the user, rather than just straight video.

i have played eve for almost one year now, and unlike some people i still think its great with or without the lag.
i think there should be video tutorials on basic ship fittings and how to tank your ship for different types of enemies and damages. also as they progress through the game and train more skills make more video tutorials available to them for larger ships. start out with basic frigate setup, then as they get better skills the next higher fitting/tanking tutorial would be unlocked, the next up would be destroyer, cruiser, battlecruiser, and battleships. and i do add battleships because when i first started i thought battleships were the coolest and a little more than 2 months into the game i got a megathron with help of my corpmate and a friend, i was definately not ready for a megathron. If anything, in these tutorials suggest that higher skills and smaller ships with a better tank/setup is extremely better than a larger ship with inadequate skills and a bad tank/setup. Hi, I've been playing Eve for a little over a month now and here is what I think could be useful to new players in a video that would be a little harder to represent with text and images.
The Eve Universe- Teach them the basics about how the world works
- Security, teach them not to attack players in empire and what empire means and what can happen in low sec
- Talk to them about all of the different professions and ways to make money
- Stress the importance of skill training and keeping their skills safe with a good clone (maybe discuss jump clones too?)
- Teach them how to move around in the universe, how to jump to gates or set their autopilot, but to be careful in low or 0 sec areas
Battles- Take the players through the whole battle experience and what they should be looking for, watching and doing during the battle. - Teach them about weapon types and ranges and how that plays a major part in a battle - Teach them to watch their capacitor, shields, heat and what they all mean and what happens if they are gone - Teach them about resistances, for themselves and their enemies and how to take advantages of that (could also include sensor types ex: gravitimetric-caldari)
- Talk to them about electronic warfare and the role that plays in battles
- Possibly discuss attacks on POS's and how they work (although newer players won't be dealing with this for some time usually)

-The finer points of building with BPs. Its actually a really tricky process, with several places you can snag and get stuck. -Refining. -Character generation, with focus on attributes, learning skills, implants, and races.
(I for one was not aware there was a smuggling skill that is only available upon character generation, until my character was already 6 months old.)

I've definatly benefitted from player video tutorials on Scanning and probing!..
I feel its important that new players are made aware from the very start that there is more to just Ratting, Mining and mission running! so anything on scanning and exploration I think would be very beneficial.
I also think there needs to be a comprehensive guide on the overview! how to set it up for various tasks! like traveling, mining, pvp, scanning... even things like transversal velocity and angular velocity... I played the game for over a year now and never thought to activate stargates onto the overview.. I always find myself looking around for it!
Nearly everything can be explained by text.. but people cant be botherd to read text, especially if its trying to explain complex things like angular velocity and missile flight durations!.. most of your videos should concentrate on explaining things which CAN be explained using text but speed up the learning process much faster!
Same goes with industry and manufacturing, contracts.. buying and selling, the market.. how to make use of the various graphs and what they mean.. I would rather watch a boring video with no blazing guns than pages and pages text.

I just spotted this quote and felt compled to reply...
WTF are you talking about?.. every new player downloads video tutorials! when I start playing ANY new game.. even BEFORE I start playing a game I watch tutorial videos.
A Tutorial video.. or even a whole series of 250MB Tutorial videos will be DAMN sight better than EVE-TV.
If this is only a 45mb file I would very disapointed.

Hi, I am Shocker, I've been playing Eve-Online for more than a year. (currently lazy to check exact date, but I think its around a year and 3 months?) Here is my contribution ideas to you Devs.
First thing that came up in my mind. Despite it is about the video tutorial, but the current tutorial ingame should be changed further first. (but later the video ideas!)
But concerning the video tutorial, the FIRST thing that Eva should do, is pop up a window notice to recommend players to check out the tutorial and mention about additional tutorial video instructions "bonus" when COMPLETING the tutorial, the FIRST time that a player freshly install/reinstall Eve, be it new or existing characters. :)
That way, new players will be further encouraged to check out the tutorial, because I introduced some players to Eve-online and only a few skipped the tutorial OR quits mid-way to the tutorial. So it needs something to encourage the new players more to check it out.
Right now, the current tutorial is fine, but with the idea i thought up, I'd call it "basic tutorial." When people CHOOSE to do the tutorial, Eva, again should mention something like "additional video version of the Tutorial" at the start of the tutorial.
When players finished the tutorial, that's where the "video" tutorial, you guys thought up, come in. :)
Say after they finished with the tutorial, what Eva should do is explain and ask what that new player want to do exactly so it'll help amd give some idea and/or direction after tutorial finished.
The choices (so far) should be either "combat" or "industrial."
The combat and industry choices is self-explainable, but covers more instructions and details on either of those category. But, I'd say the players have a choice for a video version or ingame instructions format like the "basic tutorial." I am sure that few people wouldn't check out the video format.
And that's all I can think of ATM. I let someone take over from here if anyone think its great idea by far, but further "enhanced" and/or better, yet maybe similar idea. :) -----------------------------------

Any way this can be handled like some of the more Modern RTSes? A CGI talking head popping up in a corner of my screen would go a long way for me on limiting the "annoyance factor."
The more organic and intuitive, the better. Plus, I'd bet the In-Station guys could have a field day with real time rendering a "conversation."

Great idea!
Not ONE video, but a few. Make them available on the site or youtube (or something like it). Point new players there, to watch, while downloading the game. Make sure it's very short in the "a couple of minutes" range, so they won't get daunted. Let them return to those videos every time they stumble on something big, like "what to do next", invention, manufacturing and stuff like that, that are required for the 10 tutorial missions to complete.
Please, please, please, pretty please... add something in the tutorial that explains WHY all this is required from the player to know and do. What is the benefit. I know tutorials are usually "just do it and stfu" but eve shouldn't be like that.
PS. the invention mission (7/10 or smth) is too weird. I haven't touched invention before (even though I have extreme industry skills) and it was incomprehensible to me what was being asked. I did notice it required a tech2 item to finish so I used invention on the BPO provided (had to travel a jump or two to find an invention facility). Anyways, not something a newbie would know how to do and (more importantly) why.
PS2. I'm a carebear, but I did notice that the tutorials are only for carebears. It doesn't touch any bad stuff you can do in game, like pvp, stealing, piracy and smuggling, which is bad. I shouldn't have to explain why.
Thanks

There are a couple of areas I still struggle with, thatĘs using the directional scanner, as well as probes, itĘs not so much using them, but understanding the results that are returned and turning them into something meaningful.
The other area is BPOs and the research side of this, I get lost in the various options and views. It would be nice to watch some search, find a slot, set it up, and run it though with an explanation to the skills and how they affect the results.
Finally, the other area is the UI. Like the options in the overview, a few lines of text and an image will not give you a good understanding.
Written with an alt, as lets face it, no respectable player wants people to know the areas he still struggles with.

Edited by: Perseus D''Solos on 05/07/2007 16:49:08 Edited by: Perseus D''Solos on 05/07/2007 16:43:41 I'll sign on tbyt's post, but if you really want to bring out the big guns, do a video which explains the concept of the game in more detail than "spaceships, rawr!". I mean things such as:
Security status and security level - ("I got shot down in Amammake!!!?", "What are pirates? Are they NPC's or what?")
NPC/player corporations, alliances - ("What's an alliance?", "Taxes? Say what?", "Are the Band of Brothers NPCs?" [Someone actually asked that...])
Different professions, race, career choices and attributes - ("Must I be a miner if I chose that when I created my character?", "Must I fly caldari if that's my race?", "Do I get penalties for flying other races' ships?", "Do my attributes affect how I handle a ship?", "How do I make ISK?")
Implants, skills, and learning skills - ("What are implants good for?", "In what order should I train things?", "I'll never catch up to the veteran players, *sigh*")
Modules and ships - Sizes of modules, ammo, gunnery basics, CPU and PG, fitting requirements ("How do I get this module to fit?")
Factions and standings - (What's the difference between personal, corp, and faction standings?", "Can other players see the standings I set towards them?", "Why can't I use this or that agent?", "How do I increase my standings?)
And much more... These may be basic issues which new players often need explained at great length. The learning curve of EVE is, as I'm sure you're aware, pretty steep, and to some, it might seem insurmountable. Getting a kick start on the basic concepts of the game would probably encourage more players to continue beyond the trial.

I've been playing for about a year now and in my experience the most often asked and loaded question is "What do I do now?". Apparently a lot of ppl are not familiar with the concept of a sandbox game. I would therefore suggest a short video that touches upon the many activities that are available for a player to pursue. That's my two cents.

These arent things that can be said in a image intro, they are stuff like aligning, tackling 101, and many other useful action that need to be taught in such a way if not by a friend.
Yea GoonFleet have been doing this for a couple of months now, but I'm thinking that CCP could probably do better. Not to say GoonFleet's arn't excellent, they certainly are.
On Topic: 1, It would be nice if you had the Tutorial Guide, I think its name is Nova, in the game also be the narrator for the videos. That would make them seamless in a way. 2, How to use drones for many different tasks. 3, How to create gangs and how gangs can be beneficial to ones missions etc. -------------------------------------------------

How about a simple overview of the careers/activities available in EVE. Just cover what you can do, not how to do it. I'm thinking of it in the form of a table of contents to a book.
Include links or references to where more info can be found on how to do what they've just seen and you've got a nice overview of the game to use as a hook for people on a trial account.

I've been playing for a little over a year.
How to use drones, since they are not immediately intuitive. Including all the little quirks that drones have. (like creating their own locking order which is not necessarily the same as what you've got locked)
Scanning is also another one that takes a lot of reading up on before one knows exactly what they are doing with it.
For the videos - could you just lock the camera view at a point in space which forces the player to watch stuff happen? Then you could have other ships warp in (like this is what happens when you get concordokenned).
Give Aura a body and have her show up over top everything to explain it. Lock the UI so she can point at certain things and open windows as she's explaining. She's the ship's AI she should be able to just project herself when she feels like it. We have the technology! They call them holo-reels!
Then it would be interesting to watch then just a video. Which at the present I feel would kind of detract if it didn't feel like it was part of the game.

Almost three years ... the entire time in the Caldari "noob" corp, School of Applied Knowledge. A lot that has been mentioned in this topic isn't very valuable to new players or "easily explainable in text."
However, a simple run-through of scanning and/or probes is a must, especially with exploration now as big as it is. How to setup your overview and what the icons mean is a must. And I think a visual guide of how guns, drones, and missiles work in terms of falloff, tracking, and sig radius would be quite helpful. I don't recall ever having problems figuring that stuff out, but new players these days ... (sigh)

I have been playing for a year now. The first time I played was for about 6 weeks. I was enthralled by the graphics and the depth of the game for how it allows player to choose the direction they want to take by skill customization. The learning curve was quite intense until I found a few people to assist with how things work. The tutorial was too basic and only thought the very basics. I think the current tutorial is only slightly more useful but seems to need much polishing. I believe the idea of a video may be helpful but it seems to me that people would rather play and do on the job training rather than spend time watching videos. Now...if the video would be a mini video within the game like the newscaster displays near the jump gates then I would be all for it since that would be more interactive than just spending time outside the game to learn how to play it.
I came back to try the game after several months because I wanted to see changes with Revelation II. I was happily not disapointed and am back. I am still learning many new things about the game as I ease back into the pilot chair.
TOP three things I would like to see in a training video:
How the map utility works (i.e. flattening, information, options, waypoint setting)
Creating Gangs and options available in gangs.
Understanding how to read information provided by modules and skills and how it affects the ship fitting and character development.
That is my two cents worth.
