______You would have separate servers for space flight and surface playing, the surface would include all ground units and atmospheric flight but of course clouds would obscure high altitude flights from the ground units and vice versa unless a scan was used. With the blizzcon coming up I have to wonder.
_____ It would suck in any mmorpg players souls that blizzard does not own yet because they might hate elves and orcs. You would have less gear options for your person than WOW, for example just a suit type a weapon type and ammo and a secondary one and a lifepack type. The ships would be where real customization would be. You would be able to hold space but any battles would become an instance when they happen and be supported by a separate server with a hard limit of 200 in most places.
______It would be different from WOW in the fact that its in space and you can lose your ships. Oh wait...
Thats why we all play eve isnt it?

Starcraft 2 is going to be nothing but Warcraft 3 in space.
Therefore, Starcraft Online would be nothing but WoW in space.
Therefore, it would not be a competitor to EVE.

I agree with DS on 1 point and disagree on another.
First - I agree that it would be WoW in space - even if the OPs paragraph 2 is acurate speculation about what it would be like. As such, WoW in space would not attract the population of EvE players that play EvE for what it is.
However, there are a lot of Empire hugging carebears who still like to solo play and arent truly invested in the larger game of EvE. I think those players would see a reduction - possibly even quite large - as they leave to try the FOTM.
And lastly while it would not be a direct gamestyle competitor, it would be a genre competitor. How many people fournd EvE while looking for a SF or space-based MMORPG only to find a severely limited number of options? Combine a new compeititor in the SF genre with a deep pocketed marketing giant like Blizzard with name recognition and you will most likely see a sharp decline in new subscribers.
But hey, this is all just out of my *** speculation like the OP EvE probably wont even be arround anymore when Blizzard get to making StarCraft Online

Edited by: Sheriff Jones on 01/08/2007 13:11:44 Well, starcraft online would be an interesting, and one that i'd choose over WoW for sure.
WoW ain't bad, it has a lot of things done better then in EVE(yes i said it!) and overall if the EVE is taen out of the MMO discussion, it's one of the best around. So WoW in space doesn't sound bad at all.
People here would hate and diss it even without trying, 'cause it's just a thing these people do. Wrong place to say anything about WoW really
I doubt it would effect the EVE playerbase, as this is kind of a "Big" boys club(*cough*) and the "elite" of MMOs
So yeah, i have a problem with being serious, but it's the almost smallest problem i have. |

Does anyone here actually believe that Eve would die because a better game comes out? Then why didnt WoW kill every other mmorpg on the market?
Because no game is perfect. They all have flaws and we all get tired of them eventually, and like to try a new one.
So Eve will never die.

Hardly. I find it to be a stagnant piece of gosa. Evolution implies change and adaptation, two things which MeH will never have in any quantity. Witness the mayhem which ensues when even the smallest of class tweaks is applied.
Nobody adapts in MeH, which is why MeH never changes.

If the only reason you are playing Eve instead of something like WoW is because it takes place in outer space, then ya, maybe you'll switch to Starcraft Online. But I'm pretty sure most of the people playing Eve aren't just here for the pretty graphics and the outer space theme. Game-play and community surely play a role as well, and I don't believe Starcraft Online can compete with Eve over Eve's target audience in that regard. ---

I would just like to point out, that seeing as starcraft 2 is just starcraft 1 with new models, unless the frist starcraft game was nothing but a warcraft clone (which people called it that 10 years ago) it is NOT warcraft in space.
and you cou;dn't go run for your goast in diablo, why would they make it that why in a MMO for starcraft? they allready have that game... ok check it out
8 million players in wow. make a new grinding mmorpg. now you have 4 million players playing WoW, and 4 million playing your new MMORPG.
I don't think the company is that dumb...
and WoW doesn't change, it ust gets new content. which is why people on these forums that say, to hell with new features! just make more ships and weapons! should be ignored. because is WoW allowed to to fly anywhere in the game, have battles in the air, first person fire your long range weapons, take over your own land, make it so that when you die you have to run through a mini mission to get your body back or something, and things like replace the whole graphics engine and allow for fighting where your swords actually meet (play KOTOR) THEN wow would be evolving . adding a new dungeon or armor set or new spell hardly counts as evolving.
and did you see how fliping ships upside out in this last dev blog only made a few wow type players go crazy? it wasn't a tiny teat, it was a whole new ship line! ----------------------------------- I'm working my way through college target CCP

Quoted for absurd amounts of truth. Also, your use of the word "MeH" to describe WoW is absolutely fitting.

Indeed. It seems that most MMOs favor this type of "evolution" which is why it will be quite a while before I even consider leaving EVE. ------------ ULTIMATE LAG SOLUTION | Forum Whiners - Unite! |

The only game that look's like it could get me to leave EVE is Infinity. But it is still in early development and the first playable release will be in 2+ years... I will then have been ... 6-7 years in EVE (that's longer than I have been married).

If blizzard makes a new MMO, they're probably not going to spend properly well-earned money and time to rewrite basic junk like the graphics engine, and so it'll look a lot like WoW.
In fact, because Blizzard has had a lot of success with WoW (in subscriber and dollar terms), there'll probably be not many gameplay changes from WoW. It'll be another cooperative PvE with PvP-as-an-interesting-afterthought nightmare. Sure, there'll be no elves or orcs, but there'll be 'spells', and 'potions', and all that other fluffy crap. It'll play exactly the same.
Not to mention, part of me suspects that they're not going to drop WoW as their main cash cow for a long time - they'll just send out 50 dollar nigh-on-required expansions every year (or every other year) and take it for all its worth. ------------------------------------ My statements are not those of my corp or of my alliance, nor anyone else I know. They are, in fact, solely mine and mine alone. Amazing! |
