Also, I too would pay for a hard copy of Eve. I've been downloading the FULL latest version every 6 months or so so I have it on CD. However, 2 Gigs is gonna be about 1.2 Gigs to big to fit on a CD.
DVD burners get cheaper by the day.

One source of download = 100+k users trying to download the new Trinity 2 upgrade = Jita-like levels of lag.
We dont want a Jita blocking our entry into Trinity II now, do we?
download managers are the same thing, one source = slow for all as it gets hammered even more by download managers.

Problem with the hard copy is you'll still have to download patches as the production and shipping cycle would mean they would have to start work on it now which would mean still downloading bag ass patches :) ---------

I am overjoyed that CCP doesn't FORCE us to use torrents like some other software distributors. For some internet connections they are actually not possible to use :\

Our current best estimate is that the new client will between 1.1 and 1.3 GB. But that's an estimate.

Hows about rewarding you loyal customers with a free disk mailed out in time for release? Then all we'll need is a small patch of the tweaks between now and then.
But seriously so long as I get the patch on release day I'm a happy bunny.

I`m sure a torrent will surface
I just hope ccp`s servers / bandwidth can handle x amount of players downloading 1.3 gig at once :D
I know for a fact some people play this game on DIAL UP! so lol @ them
CCP should send out a DVD to those who *need* it for the price of a blank disk, a beer and some postage to cover etc.

Edited by: HandSoLow on 27/09/2007 13:11:18 First of all, I am new to EVE...[cut me a bit of slack lol]
...Why are you talking about the filesize and torrents already? When does RIII get released and does this mean I cant play EVE anymore on my 1.7GHz Processor/256MB ATI GFX card? [crappy laptop]
I heard that I will need a PCI-E GFX card, a 2Ghz+ Processor and Vista [dx10 support] in order to play EVE RIII...this will affect the Linux users big time!
Please comfort me because I just got this game and I'm completely hooked, would be a shame if I couldn't play it anymore without spending over a thousand pounds to get a new computer JUST to play EVE.
Thanks

The main problem I can see with a torrent is that it will let people harvest the IP addresses of other Eve players and that gives a nice juicy target for hackers etc. to probe.

Uuuh, great ! Sounds a lot better indeed.
But, will we also get the OPTION to download it as a torrent ? Or will at least the "new patcher" have a "resume downloading patch" feature ? Or, you know, something vaguely similar or somesuch ?

I'm sure some players will upload it as a torrent somewhere once they have it, posting worries like this early is just making topic about nonsense.

When you whine as much as some people, you have to try pretty hard for new topics. So you tend to get ahead of yourself.

I'd pay for a DVD of Revelations 2 with boxart and some goodies in the case in lieu of a manual, maybe a small booklet with artwork or whatever. Something to put in my shelf next to the original CD for EVE :/

No. That system is not to run EVE, it's to run Vista. Rev 3 will bring a new graphics engine (Trinity 2) that will use DX10. If you have Vista you will be able to see the new nice graphics. However you will also have the choice to use the actual graphics engine so you have nothing to worry about. If you can play EVE now, you will be able to play Rev 3 too.
I for one don't plan to get Vista any time soon, simply because the performance under Vista is really bad. I have decent hardware and I don't plan to use most of my PC's power just to run the OS.

I wonder how long OP will post about her concerns about Joves and how they should be introduced to the game and how they could ruin everything if not done how she envisioned.

I wouldn't get too excited about this topic. Hosting a torrent costs CCP exactly the same as hosting a normal file, but takes off some load from their servers and gives their customers better transfers. There is no way in hell a serious company wouldn't make use of this technology that is available for virtually no cost ----- Arbitrator - Life & Death |

How did you come to this conclusion when a torrent may be a few kilobytes and a client 1.2gb?
200,000+ people downloading 1.2gbs has got to cost a little bit in bandwidth

I'm not against the idea of a torrent, but technology has evolved such that the bottle neck now is at the users end, not the server end.
I have a 20mb cable connection and I have seen sites transfering to me at upwards of 1700 KB/s.. whilst the same file on torrent struggles to hit 200 KB/s (which is due to the windows restriction of 50 connections, which you can change, but rarly helps)
Really, even if 50'000 players were to starting downloading a 1.5gig file their servers shouldnt even be breaking a sweat.
well time will tell.. or CCP will correct me ;) but Torrent is quickly becoming old hat and only for those tight fisted companies who cant afford decent servers, and for those wanting to illegally file-share.

Whoa! You can do that? You must be pretty darned flexible! No need for a girlfriend, then, right?
But I do agree with you. I've got a 15mb connection, and sometimes things are there before I click on it. I'll just make sure to download it through my browser and not the client.

Very simple:
Hosting a torrent means that CCP would provide one 'seed' that has the whole patch/new client. Its speed (seeds) would be limited to bandwidth available to host the file normally.
By hosting a torrent I didn't mean only the torrent file ----- Arbitrator - Life & Death |

Not exactly, the graphics update in the November expansion is DX9, there will be a DX10 version at some point in the future as well though, but this isn't it.
