How would you consider the testing on sisi?
At this moment it is merely making a copy of tranq and patch it with a little patch of let's say 5 to 10mb
Like a former poster said, missing 1 patch at a day makes you re-install the complete TQ version.
Will we have a "Standard" sisi set to patch on during testing time?
Because downloading 1.3gb, extracting it to a full blown 5-8GB within every 'missed' patch is not really appreciated I guess.

Originally by: Kayna Eelai blizzard, world of warcraft, 8.5mill. users worldwide. their downloader uses bittorrent by default, with option to get it through http. if a company like that, with that ammount of users, uses that method... they can't be much wrong. OH BTW: you can actually get chunks of the bigger patches 1-2 weeks before patch deployement, having the downloader running in background if you decide so.
sometimes i think ccp lives under a rock, and never ever look at any other company that might have a better system than they have (in any aspect)
i've hosted 2GB homemade videos to over 15000 users with a 1024/320 adsl line. and yes, the start is slow, but as soon as 100% of the chucks is spread through users, it goes faster than lightspeed. 1.3gb will take me 35-40 mins so its not bad at all. ill just amek sure i can downlaod it as soon as it comes up for download....
bittorrent is the way to go, nuff said.
well last time i downloaded WoW to my computer (back when a mate got me to trial it... hated it btw) one of the WoW patches took me 5 hours to download at it was only 200mb or so....i could download the eve client which as around 650mb in 16 mins. so what ever WoW use... and if its torrent then its a load of crap cause generally people will who download it when the torrent has calmed down makes it take forever.
now i think that its fine how we get the client/patches now and i dont really think we need any change to how tis distributed...

*******s. With my connection speed that 1.3Gb download will take about ten hours, and my computer goes into sleep mode and shuts off its internet automatically after thirty minutes of inactivity (I've yet to figure out how to disable this feature.) I too support an official torrent.

Torrents are one of the best form of file transfer. However with n00b users and n00b ISPs that's not always the case. Regardless I would be in full support of a torrent file distribution for EVE.

To give you more information on how we're planning to deliver the November expansion:
There will be two client installs available. Both will contain the new Trinity graphics engine and the exact same code. The difference will be in the art content. The smaller client, codenamed "Classic", will only contain the DX8 content (installer size about 650 MB) while the larger client will contain both the DX8 and the new DX9 SM3 content (installer size around 1.3 GB).
When we release the expansion then all Revelations II clients will be patched to the new "Classic" client, using the regular autopatcher. The patch will be about 15-30 MB since the art content is mostly the same (about 20 new ships). On the first startup the client will check the capabilities of the hardware and if DX9 SM3 capable offer to download the new art content. This download will be done in the background (using BITS) and you can immediately start playing if you want while it downloads. The download will continue even if the client is not running. Once the download is complete the client will offer you to patch to the full client.
We're looking at offering a torrent download of the installers and the content upgrade but no news yet on that front.

As implied here and stated in other threads, you will have the option to continue using the current DX8 graphics, so the minimum requirements won't change. The shiny new graphics will require a DirectX 9.0c card (Shader Model 3.0 support). I'm not sure if the other requirements will be affected, or just the graphics card. ---------------------------

We will increase the minimum operating systems specifications from Windows 2000 SP2 to SP3. Otherwise the minimum specifications (for DX8 support) will not change, as far as we know at this point. To support the new graphics then a video card supporting DX9 SM3 will be required.

Man I cant wait for this patch, even if it is 1.3Gig, but it might be worth CCP making a pre-launch version of the patch like they do with Half-Life. And the patch only comes active when the server tells the client thats the patch its using. That way we can all have it ready before the offical date...

Edited by: Korov Dutor on 10/10/2007 14:06:26 I currently play Eve on a cellular broadband connection, which so far has been working great, but a GB+ download just isn't going to happen.
Any chances of a CD being made available either by mail order or local retailers? I have to believe there are others in similar or worse situations.

Can't I just say that I want to download the file immediately without using BITS? I don't have much problem with 1.3 GB really. It's a nice feature though, for people with slower connections.

Both installs and all patches will be available for direct download... possibly even torrents as well (although I'm not making any promises at this time).

I looked it up and this means that my Ati X800 won't be able to run the new graphics engine....bummer, I thought I owned at least a half-decent card.

Thanks for the info / responses CCP. Can't wait for the new graphics!
I would like a torrent download as well, but by the sounds of what CDN is, a download manager and a few hours wont be that bad either.
May I suggest you reiterate to the community the important points of this thread in a sticky or a client news item? There seems to be allot of people who do not realize that there will be two clients, how big the new client will be, how the patch will proceed, etc. Disseminating this information to the non-forum junkies would be a good idea IMHO.

The option to play as we do today after a max 30mb download while the 1gb + of data downloads in the background is great! it isnt the torrent solution, but its better then having to wait through that whole download before we can play.
Personally, I think that is a great compromise and sounds like a winner to me. I remember when sony did the graphics updates to eq and you had to wait for hundreds of mb of data going at barely dialup speeds while everyone dl'ed the patch before you could even play was *aweful*. I am glad that CCP made a way for us to enjoy the game while we get the big files for later use. --------------------------

I support a torrent of this.
And even if you guys don't manage to do it, the community likely will (as long as a standalone patch does get put out anyway).

I support a torrent, but even if an 'official' torrent is not supplied, I strongly /sign posting any / all of the following so that 3rd parties can host a torrent, and 4th parties can be sure they received an unmodified download, in order of preference:
* md5sum hash (See here for Checking md5sum in Windows) * PGP (or the free equivalent GPG) generated hashes (ie MD5, SHA1, RIPEMD160, SHA256, SHA384, SHA512, SHA224) * OpenSSL-based hashes (ie RMD160, MD5, SHA1) * PGP / GPG detached signature
